As for multiple hells, isn't that actually a thing in some of the myriad strains of Christianity?
In that regards, as depicted in the Divine Comedy there is one "Hell" but multiple layers or functional "Mini-Hells" if you would. Each Circle of Hell is dedicated to a different category or subclass of Sin.
Going from first to last, you have Limbo, which is where you go if you weren't sinful in life, but didn't do the whole "Religion" thing. Or at least, Christian Religion. It's basically budget Heaven, and it's described as basically being "Ok" and you go there if you weren't baptized or you were an unsinful pagan.
Then you get Lust, which is where you go if your sins were related to Lust in some nature. Pretty straightforward.
You got Gluttony next, followed by Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud/Deceit, and finally Treachery. Leading to the saying, "There's a special place in hell for Traitors."
Depending on the primary nature of the sins you committed in life, you get sent to one of those Circles of Hell. Or in the case of the first, the lack of sin.
