Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

@DragonParadox Can multiple Hermean Potential castings stack?
If not, can we have a readied action from someone to cast a new one as soon as Cob uses the first one up? I'm thinking of Cob having to make multiple checks/saves in rapid succession.
(N.b. Not Mina, as she needs to be ready to use her Fortune hex)
Mina's current Hermean Potential spell allows for two rerolls, and her Fortune Hex is good for another one. Three is pretty dang good.

He'll also have Moment of Greatness that can be used to double a Morale Bonus one time. Depending on what needs to be resisted, that would be either doubling the +4 from Unbreakable Heart or +2 from Heroism.

The prophecy talks about various kinds of sight 'beyond sight'. Foresight (if I attributed the Serpent correctly), dreaming, imagination.

Psionics likely has something of a kind as well. A glance at something that does not otherwise exist?

[x] Go ahead, the verses did counsel against fear, but we won't jump into this blindly.
-[x] Gorok will prepare an Unbreakable Heart spell to cast on Cob before he attempts to meddle with the device.
-[x] Mina will cast Heroism and Hermean Potential spells on Cob. She will also be ready to use her Fortune Hex on him, if necessary.
-[x] Kori will cast Protection from Evil and Guidance on Cob.
-[x] Sirim will use Shadow Enchantment to cast Moment of Greatness on Cob and everyone else present.
-[x] Sirim, Mina, and Kori will all be ready to cast Dispel Magic on the device or any unusual effects it generates when Cob messes with it.

Not sure.

His Possession spell would allow something like that?

But he doesn't have Chain of Eyes or Scrying or anything I'd usually associate with that line-

I believe in Cob! He needs our support!

Cob has been stabbing MVP for awhile, so he deserves a reward.

Fingers crossed that this doesn't blow up in our faces. We've got the whole team working together to work the problem, so hopefully between the various buffs Cob will be all right.

Unfortunately, Warty was only available for moral support, but I'm sure he'll be great at that.

Arc 8 Post 49: To Leap into the Unknown
To Leap into the Unknown

8th of Neth 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

"Alright," you say at last, resigned to the risk. It's not yours to make after all, but Cob's. That does not mean he shouldn't take every hand up he can, however. "In the morning when the others are up."

After a brief suspicious look, wondering if this is a more round about no, he smiles in the dark and whispers his thanks.

Breakfast is too bright as usual, but pleasant enough otherwise. A mix of travel grains and local nuts with a side of hard cheese is served as the others talk about what they might be able to do to help. Mina would rather he abandon the whole notion, no matter the prophecy, but arguing alone for it she doesn't have much of a chance. Gorok, perhaps understanding Cob's heart better, asks only for time to seek 'another spirit's blessing'. Even though you had been vaguely aware that he's mastered some spells now, you wonder how many of them and precisely from whom. Tis not sorcery nor wizardry, that's for sure.

The sound of dwarfish digging follows you through the trees and past the line of guards. On the balance of things, better to not worry Leontas and Urgor with any arcane oddities and if things should go bad enough to require their aid this stump aught to be close enough to dash back.

Mina's obviously biting her tongue against even more words of caution, offers her blessing instead as Sirim breathes a soft purplish shadow upon all present. Yours is the smallest contribution and the least long lasting, but every pebble on the scale counts.

"Thanks!" Cob calls back with a toothy smile as he turns at last to the device. First he paces around it, looking at all the knobs and markings, then he gives it a good sniff too before licking one of the spouts. Thoughtfully he smacks his lips. "Tastes weird."

"Weird like you've just been poisoned, or normal-weird?" Mina asks.

You refrain from mentioning that poison can taste like anything, or indeed nothing.

Cob's next trick is darting his hand in and out of the flame as fast as he can. You remember some of the other children showing off like that when you were young, you also remember some of the nasty burns the ones who weren't quite fast enough to manage it got.

"Huh..." Cob looks down at his hand. "Gimmie a bowl will ye, one of those shinny ones Gavhaul used." He stops to think. "Gimmie two if you can find 'em!"

Two bronze bowls are procured, to which Cob pours something from his water skin onto the flames, though you are pretty sure it isn't water. Spirits maybe?

"Is that safe?" Mina asks, biting her lip with dread. It's not really a question that needs an answer, she knows it as well as any of the rest of you. 'No', though none of you can tell just how unsafe.

The liquid turns to a kind of inky blue steam and something tips over, a flicker of fortune and possibility as Sirim snaps out his spell again, a cue to reach out with your own blessing. Mina's hadn't been spent yet.

Cob huffs in annoyance and blows the steam away, but he isn't deterred in the least. There's one more liquid to use after all... literally. He cuts his palm with his dagger and lets the blood drip into the other bowl. Then he fiddles with the toggles until he's happy with the ruby-red light of the flame and sets the bowl on it.

For a moment nothing happens, then a crack as the blood crystalizes one moment into a dizzying pattern of red and then explodes, or maybe the air, the space it occupies it explodes. This sends Cob hurling backwards... somehow landing on his feet.

Cob Reflex Save (DC 15): 1d20+12 = 20 (Success)
Cob Use Psionic Device (DC 20): 1d20-1 +1 (Guidance) +4 (Doubled Morale Bonus) = 12 (Failure)
Cob Use Psionic Device Re-roll (DC 20): 1d20-1 +1 (Guidance) +4 (Doubled Morale Bonus) = 21 (Success)

"Woah!" He gives another wide smile than closes his eyes tight.

Since you came to travel with him you've seen your small friend clear some impressive jumps, especially with a good run, but you have never seen him jump eight feet in the air from a standing start. Then he stops to think and does it again, just to be sure it wasn't an accident, and this time you notice the barest shimmer of space twisting in his wake.

"That's not magic," Mina says slowly.

"Not arcane magic," Sirim corrects. Even after months in his company he's not the easiest to read, but he almost sounds proud of Cob.

Cob Acrobatics (DC 32): 1d20+ 13+ 2 (Heroism) +10 (Mental Leap) = 34 (Success)
Cob Acrobatics (DC 32): 1d20+ 13+ 2 (Heroism) +10 (Mental Leap) = 34 (Success)

Further studies, and there are a lot of studies that day, with all four of you worried about Cob as you are interested in his strange new powers, reveal that magics of enchantment cling more easily to Cob since the event. Sirim theorizes that since his mind had made use of such powers to break its binds, he now subconsciously views all such abilities as benevolent.

"He might well develop other powers of the mind as well in time." The shadow mage pauses for so long the rest of you think he he done, but when he picks up his musings it is with the air of one who only took a long breath. "I wonder if that buried affinity was the the cause of your troubles with all that is touched by Nethys' domain."

Cob Gains Wild Talent (Psionic Feat)
Cob Gains Mental Leap (Psionic Feat)

Sirim Spellcraft (DC 15): 1d20+ 12 +3 (Bestow Insight) = Automatic Success

Cob Gains Spell Vulnerability (Enchantment)

Cob Unlocks Pisonic Classes
Cob Unlocks Psionic Skills

Cob gains 400 XP

You let out a breath you did not realize you were holding. Was it worth it? Did your foresight serve?

OOC: If Cob had somehow made his Use Psionic Device without buffs he would not have gained Spell Vulnerability, but he would have had to roll a literal 20 for that so you guys did pretty good overall. Also the thing didn't blow up and cause 15d6 damage, Reflex 17 for half.

Crap...

Better than I feared, worse than I was hoping for. There are a lot of nasty Enchantment spells out there to worry about.

I think Cob might need to learn the Iron Will feat at 7th level. That will counter this drawback and it might help him develop greater psionic abilities without having to dip into multi classing, which should be avoided, IMO.

@DragonParadox, did Cob get a supercharged version of Mental Leap? Normally, the +20 bonus would only be available if he had 10 or more ranks in Acrobatics and was expending his Psionic Focus.

But what if it explodes in a way that gives Cob some sort of 'psionic initiate' feat? :p
A virtual cookie to that table, please.

Now Cob can jump good.
Was it worth it, did your foresight serve?
It was, and not at all, but this isn't what's important here. The act of divination itself is indicative of making a decision, and just looking for an auspicious sign to proceed. In a way, it's the best way to convince yourself to go through with something.

I think Kori would feel worried for Cob's sake.

Are there any psionic-rogue classes?
I was looking briefly and nothing jumped out at me at increasing his sneak attack dice that well.

Is Iron Will an explicit prereq for some psionic abilities, or is this a vibes/thematic statement?

Honestly, I'm happy for him.

@DragonParadox , did Cob not get a second reroll on his Use Psionic Device check from both Fortune and the Hermean Potential? (at CL 5 to 9, it should give two rerolls).

...If we do find a psionic class that's a good fit for Cob, can we retrain some old rogue levels each time he levels up in the new class?

Edit: So, we really didn't learn anything about the stove. Ah well, ces't la vie.
I really hope that my idea of threatening: "if the ghost looks to be winning we're gonna cheat because we care more about you killing demons than 'honourably' dying to a ghost in a grudge-match" is viable and works, 'cuz we have questions.

I wonder if we might be able to use Divination to ask "what can we ask the ghost as a hook that had a chance of getting him to explain psionic stuff/loot"

[X] Kori feels happy for Cob, he seems content enough leaping though the woods, though he really wishes there was anyone he knew/could find that could provide any foundational context for this stuff, so Cob doesn't stumble into more banes like that vulnerability to enchantment.

There are a couple Rogue-like psionic classes, if you squint and turn your head just right when you look at them.

Nothing that really fits Cob, though, IMO. None that are worth multi classing, either. If we want him to be the best Unchained Rogue he can be, we should just keep him as an Unchained Rogue.

There are Rogue Talents Cob can learn that would let him use some psionics.

And maybe instead of retraining him out of Rogue levels or multiclassing, @DragonParadox would let him retrain into an Archetype.

It would be easy to cook up a Psionic version of the Arcane Charlatan Archetype. That would eventually let Cob use a bunch of different 1st level psionic powers. Those could be very handy.

Not really an official prerequisite that I can recall. It just seems like it might be something DP could build up on while also countering Cob's new weakness to Enchantment spells.

From sounds of it the reward wasn't worth the downside.

Depends on how the whole Psionic angle develops. If we could get him a Psionic version of the Arcane Charlatan out of it, I would be very happy.

Isn't the Soul Knife class legendary?

Edit; apparently it is Very bad.

[X] BeepSmile
The updated Pathfinder version isn't really bad, IMO, especially some of the Archetypes and prestige classes that are available for it, but it would be a terrible fit for Cob. The original 3.5 version, however, was hot garbage.
