Fate/In Glory Of (Worm)

Ah yes, let's go to the most populated and high-maintenence sections of the city with our superpower the Berserker, after being called out by a respected independent hero for causing more damage than the escaping Undersiders. Brilliant.

I ain't voting for now lmao, i forgot which one is the merchant base. And they look like the gang with least personal consequences if attacked.

C'mon Taylor, you live in America! There's no such thing as an illegal gun

It was a literal medium machine gun lol

Honestly I'm debating how to do this; the center is like, the one place the heroes are more prevalent than anyone else. Protectorate and New Wave are based here. I roll for who Taylor actually encounters so it has randomness to it but it was definitely the Safest patrol option.

[X] Center (Downtown & Boardwalk)

This was possibly the first time that Taylor had ever been downtown during Saturday evening.

There was a reason for that; it was packed.

Lord Street Market, the Boardwalk, the nicer, ritzy parts of the city were all in the same place. The masses of humanity were everywhere.

It was also the reason that Taylor had chosen it. Without a doubt this section of the city was the safest. The Protectorate HQ as well as the Parahuman Response Team's HQ were here. New Wave lived nearby and patrolled. It wasn't uncommon to look up and see a glowing figure float by at highway speeds; Glory Girl taking Panacea to the hospital was actually common enough that Taylor had seen it happen a few times while she had been stuck there.

Less of a chance of running into Lung, or Kaiser.

That didn't change the fact that there were hundreds of people in every direction Taylor could see.

She huddled deeper into her hoodie.

It made her deeply uncomfortable.

Even the reassuring presence of the giant did little to assuage the unease.

Taylor had perhaps picked too boring of a place to go looking for action.

As in there wasn't anything going on that she could find.

She meandered through Lord Street Market, admiring things she couldn't really afford to purchase. Like the stall selling Aleph imports. Or the one harking 'real wagyu beef'. Or arms.

She blinked.

There was a stall selling… prosthetic limbs. Or so the giant moving stuffed lion, holding a sign said.

What.

Evidently Taylor wasn't the only one staring as others around her were looking at it and taking fliers from the upright creature. The flier that the fuzzy paw handed to her were double-sided; on one side, it was advertising for a cape named Parian for custom stuffed animals. On the other side it was generic images of limbs with the eponymous LimbMaster.

And directions to the stall hosting two capes in the market.

A lack of running into anything as well as a morbid sense of curiosity brought Taylor towards there.

It was easy to find given the series of life-sized stuffed animals pointing the way. What made it even easier was seeing LimbMaster standing a good head above everyone else. Taylor was pretty sure it was LimbMaster.

Who else would have had a dozen extra arms coming out of them?

What was more bizarre about it – not that seeing someone with extra arms was normal – was that none of them were matched. Each arm was radically different, with different lengths, and hand setups. One of them had thumbs on either side of four fingers. Another split into four miniature… grabbers for lack of a better term. There was a full on claw looking one. Several of them were juggling. LimbMaster herself stood easily a foot and a half taller than Taylor, in a red and grey bodysuit. Said bodysuit had a bulky harness running along her back and over the top of her chest where the arms were attached to the cape. Her half of the booth was covered in papers, smaller scale models of limbs including legs as well as a few photographs.

By contrast, Parian, the other cape, barely reached LimbMaster's mid chest and that included a very frilly lacy headpiece. She was dressed like a Victorian doll, though her movements took out the initial uncanny feeling Taylor got from looking at her. Fabric, yarn, all manner of threads were laid out on her side in neat containers.

The booth itself was one of the larger ones, with the biggest space one could pay for. Of which, the majority of the people were huddled around Parian, specifically kids dragging unwilling parents wanting stuffed animals. LimbMaster on the other hand…

...had just about no one around her booth. A few people were staring at her. The occasional person came up to her and talked for a few stilted lines. That made sense to Taylor; if someone was going to get a major medical procedure done, it wouldn't happen on a street corner. In that regard, this was probably all advertising or maybe setting up an actual consultation at a later date.

It was a weird niche to have given that Panacea lived in the city and she could heal anything.

-[] LimbMaster isn't particularly busy, though Taylor doesn't need any limbs replaced.
-[] Parian is making a unicorn. It looks super cute. See about getting a bird plushie for Nikki.

[] Keep looking for trouble, move on.

Author's Note: Oh hey, our first canon cape Taylor has laid eyes on! Success?

Basically, Taylor gets a limited number of actions before she will head home i.e. when it gets too late in day. There is a table I'm rolling off for encounters. Blame all encounters on my beta for they do the rolls :p

I know its really convenient to encounter LimbMaster after they keep getting mentioned but the first roll got rogues and second roll was for Parian & LimbMaster.

Please vote as always!

I kind of feel like LM might not be too bothered by the lack of attention, but there's something about her that makes me curious.

What makes you curious?

In Canon, I don't think Parian really achieved a lot of success financially, but it's such an outlier to the story of Worm there's a lot of room to breath, but we see here that these two are successful enough to rent one of the largest spaces in wealthy and competitive neighborhood for a stall to sell their wares. That speaks to a certain degree of success. Perhaps it's something like Parian gets a lot of low-grade repeat customers, but LimbMaster gets more occasional one-time customers, but their work is enough to make a lot on the individual sales.

Plus all the arms hooked up at once to create a spectacle...could she be doing it to act as a draw, much like the dancing lion? Is she actually lonely, or is she perfectly fine in the face of Parian's popularity? There's also the name parallel to Armsmaster, is that hinting towards a relation with him? A rivalry, one-sided perhaps? She seems like the underdog choice compared to Parian as well.

Just a bunch of random little thoughts you know.

Counterpoint is that its $250 and it's not hard to spring for it.

I should point out at least one thing, namely there are a fair more parahumans detailed here then in canon. Canon threw a larger number than what we actually saw, so I'm adding a few. Which makes sense- there are a number of capes that are valued as basically not worth it by the gangs because the cost for catching them is high or reward is relatively low.

There is something like four or five rogues active in BB at the moment. They have relatively high turnover.

In regards to Panacea, it's worth noting that she's one person. Even taking into account her guilt-driven overtime healing, she's often depicted as frequenting one hospital in a moderately-sized city. Also, as her healing seems to be done as a sort of charity, there's not really any way to expedite getting a chance to be healed by her unless you transfer yourself to wherever she's working at the moment. Thus, it's entirely possible for, say, Joanna to have never been taken to see her.

Taylor… didn't really have any interest in having a limb cut off and replaced with tinkertech one.

All of her limbs were currently functioning quite well, thank you very much.

She got into the queue for Parian.

Plus, when else was she going to be able to get something made by a real cape?!

...it only sunk in as she was waiting in line that technically if she made something it would also count. It was still something that felt weird to consider. That she was technically other. It didn't help that her power wasn't her doing something so much as the giant doing something.

The thought was a bit depressing.

Taylor had imagined if she got powers, she could fly or shoot lasers or control some esoteric element.

Nope, just give orders to a big guy.

She kinda felt like she got the bottom of the barrel at the superpower lottery sometimes. She was just as helpless as before on a personal level, even if she knew the giant would smash its way through a lot of things. If she ran into the trio and they covered her mouth, Taylor was just as screwed as she had been before the locker.

...at least she had a friend or two now.

Maybe.

She was still on the fence with Joanna.

She was hopeful, though.

For once.

It was nice.

"Hello!" The voice pulled Taylor out of her thoughts as she realized she had actually made it to the front of the line. "What can I do for you today?"

Right. Buying something.

"Can, uh, have a minute?" Embarrassment tinged her voice.

"Of course." The immaculate doll gestured to Taylor's left. "Could you move over slightly while you decide? So I can help the next person-in-line" Parian sounded perfectly polite despite Taylor clearly dallying during her peak business hours.

"Sure."

She shifted over slightly so the next person in line could start talking with Parian. Taylor glanced at the placard with a listing of prices at stall.

As fitting of being in the market, the prices weren't exactly cheap. Though, they also weren't as pricey as Taylor had suspected.

Custom clothing was well out of Taylor's price range or even interest. She didn't care a great deal about clothes, but she couldn't help but have morbid curiosity in it. A stuffed animal was actually in her price range… though she didn't have much interest in one for herself. Rather as a gift. A bit of a pricey gift, but one she could afford. It was nowhere near the cost of a new cellphone, but it was a small bit of appreciation for Nikki easily spending a grand on her.

...Taylor was starting to get an inkling that Nikki's family back in Russia might not have been exactly… legit. She was pretty sure that Nikki's dad was some kind of crime lord. It made sense; Nikki was clearly pretty sheltered and was used to throwing around money. That also could be why Nikki's dad was still overseas; he couldn't leave the 'business' or whatever it would be called over there despite being able to afford to send Nikki and her grandmother over- international travel wasn't cheap. Maybe a parahuman teleporter had been involved? That would make sense given the very, very illegal weaponry that Nikki had. Taylor had looked up some of those guns when she got home and she was sure they weren't allowed for private use.

"Hello." A crisp, smooth if electronic female voice came from above Taylor as she mused, causing her to startle. LimbMaster was staring down -she really had a good foot and a half on her- at her. "You have wonderful hair."

"Uh… thank you?"

"How do you get it so nice?" LimbMaster questioned. It was clearly due to the dearth of anyone near her half of the stall. Not many people wanted new limbs on a street corner, it seemed.

"Conditioner?" It was very weird being asked this by a giant metal woman. Before LimbMaster could ask another thing, the person who took her spot at the front of Parian's line left and the doll looked towards her. Eager to leave the giant looming metal woman, she took a half-step towards the much shorter cape. "Hi, um, you do stuffed animals, right?"

"I do indeed."

"Can you do a bird?"

"Of course."

"Like a raven or a crow?"

"I can do corvids, yeah."

"Can I have a raven?"

"But of course! Anything specific or just a raven?" Clearly Taylor's expression showed some level of confusion as Parian continued unprompted. "Do you want anything written on it? Besides my mark. I'll leave one on the bottom of one of it's feet. Right foot."

"It's a gift for a friend, I don't know if that makes it any different."

The doll hummed. Which was weird to Taylor; she could imagine the cape's mouth moving to make the noise but she couldn't see it. Kinda freaky. "A special friend?" The emphasis made a different sort of embarrassment swell in her.

"Buhwha- no. No. Just a friend."

"I see, I see." A finger tapped on the table for a moment. "What about clothes for the raven?"

"Like what?"

"I could make a dress or a suit for the stuffed animal. Really fancy, too."

"Whatever you think is best?"

Parian nodded and glanced under the table for a moment before pulling out the aforementioned raven. It was the size of a football, completely overstuffed and had a spiffy looking suit on, complete with a monocle and top hat. "Forty five dollars and I'll include gift wrapping."

Two twenties and five ones later, Taylor had a rather fancy looking box, with impossibly intricate filigree running across its surfaces.

Hopefully Nikki will like it?

"Stop! Thief!"

Taylor's head snapped towards the noise. A woman was bolting away with something clutched in her hands. It looked like a cellphone.

Taylor…

[] ...didn't get involved. This was too little to get the giant involved in.
[] ...got involved. Send the giant.

Author's note: So this is actually really funny to me; I rolled for the next encounter (well, my beta did) and we got this.

I still wish I could find a way for the readers to actually vote on the commands Taylor gives the giant but its an issue of across two sites and usually whoever says something first, everyone votes for. Wish I had a better system for that.

Either one or two more rolls for Taylor encounters before she calls it a night.

[X] ...got involved. Send the giant.

Just have him fuckin materialize in front of the thief would be funny, as long as he doesn't do anything lethal.
