Oh man. That was supremely satisfying.

Get fucked Lung, you upjumped gecko.

Also, yeah, Emma needs some serious freaking help. Like, her rationale behind hating Annette is that she kept Taylor from killing herself? Yeah, the mind wipes were squicky, but there wasn't really a better option. Now that Taylor's in a (slightly) better place mentally (or was it the fact that Amy was in danger?) she 'just' triggered, instead of trying to tear her own still beating heart out. Truly, Emma, Annette is the worst human ever, and your continued meddling had no detrimental side effects.

Curious what exactly her powers are, because a giant squidraptor with Trump powers is more than a little fucking terrifying. I love it.

When you think shit has stopped exploding...

Also Taylor just beheaded Lung, can't think of an appropriate reaction for that. On the one hand, it does make things difficult for Annette, since "I'm a rogue, no really" probably won't work anymore. On the other hand, there isn't a bigger fait accompli than "I just killed Lung, don't fuck with me".

Also, after this, Bonesaw is incoming. She can't not be coming. It would take some strong-arming from Jack to keep her back even if he wanted to, and he probably doesn't.

So not only are things on fire, they're likely to be even more on fire in the close future. I guess nobody gets therapy if the Slaughterhouse 9 are coming after them.

Also, Taylor just beheaded Lung. If Abby wasn't gonna bug out before, she probably is now. Not to mention, she just got cheated on with Victoria's sister, proving it was the wrong Dallon she was worrying about. Fun times abound for everyone!

Eh, I sound like a downer, but I really enjoyed this chapter. Once Victoria calms down there'll be a really fun conversation for all involved, and the Dallon plot is likely to advance now. Taylor latched onto Amy really quickly, which I'm vaguely concerned about because I don't think she's stable enough to be anyone's anchor. But maybe they'll keep each other stable.

Also, if Taylor triggered in her human body, does that mean she's vaguely alive again?

really looking forward to the explanation of Taylor's new state/powers. probably won't be very much time for it between the end of this fight and the beginning of whatever's next, but it'll be interesting no matter what.

So, good news Lung is dead, bad news Taylor is re-traumatized, good news Taylor has a trump power that seems to prevent parahuman powers from fucking with her, bad news Emma is a lot more crazy than we thought, good news Taylor can legitimately get the help that she needs, bad news the Protectorate are very unlikely to leave her alone when she killed Lung.

Also, Vicky managed to fantastically miss Taylor and Amy on her entry, which I don't know how to feel about.

Also, if Taylor triggered in her human body, does that mean she's vaguely alive again?
I'm thinking it's more a case of her Shard looking at the bilocation she's been doing and metaphorically throwing up its hands and saying, "Fine! Both bodies get to share powers, and you can figure out how to handle the consciousness shifts on your own. Have fun."

Jesus fucking christ.

The sheer catharsis... oof. I love this fic, which is why I've kept with it, but I'm not gonna lie - the thought has crossed my mind to drop it simply because of how Taylor and co. always just seemed to be getting shat on 24/7. It was a struggle to handle it, but this...

This felt good to read.

I'm actually a bit ashamed, because the fight and everything were well written, and I'm just so focused on how great it feels to see Taylor finally get some measure of... closure, I guess? I mean, don't get me wrong, things are still pretty fucked, but it's nice to see things turning around for a change. Fingers crossed that it lasts a while before the next curveball gets thrown her way (fingers crossed that cliffhanger just ends in an orgy and everyone goes on their way, without Victoria possibly killing or maiming anyone or anything - though I'm not clear why she was accusing Emma and Stalker of anything in the first place).

Anyhow, that scene where she rips Lung's head off was fuckin' hype (actually reminded me a bit of the big fight scene from Jurassic Park III). Everyone's (apparently) just dead silent, while the monster that killed the dragon tells them to get out before she comes hunting for them, and walks off.

Just. Fuckin'. Loved. It.

My guess is that QA/Taylor's Shard was sick and fucking tired of being denied Best!Host, said "fuck it" and just forged a link/a corona and gemma in both bodies - would explain why Taylor is still able to freely switch between bodies/be present in both despite the implant apparently being fucked. Unless the implant being fucked is because of the Shard itself somehow tampering with it (over time), in which case that would also explain the implant functioning in the manner it has despite how that shouldn't be possible according to Annette.

Actually, I wonder if part of the reason Taylor was able to trigger this time was because Annette was occupied by the attack - could she have been actively preventing it, because she thought it was some rampant growth aka super cancer cause by Taylor's growth/condition, or because her obsession with preventing Taylor from getting involved in "all of that cape business" drove her to actively prevent Taylor from becoming a parahuman? Second sounds a bit farfetched, but with how questionable Annette's sanity has been in the past/present I wouldn't be surprised.

Anyhow, I wonder what Taylor's actual power is? Seems to be some sort of power-nullifying trump (possibly only so long as she is fighting said parahuman, residual effects might still apply - see flames hurting her after Lung was executed), but I doubt it's so clear cut and dry. Possibly some sort of rapid adaptive biology? Would possibly explain why she's suddenly three stories tall in beastie form, despite her having seemingly been about normal beastie size last time she took control. Unless that last attack on Eden drove Annette's paranoia into overdrive, and she felt compelled to turn Taylor into a kaiju...

Ya know what, I can honestly see that going any number of ways.

I wouldn't be surprised if Taylor's shard just pulled out all the stops after all the bullshit it had to go through to connect to its host.

Though I wonder if Lung's head is still technically alive? Taylor's power seemed to only effect the parts of him that she bit into, preventing them from regenerating but with the way blood was pouring out of his arm the rest of him was clearly unaffected (as much as one can be while missing an arm). Wouldn't that be a horrendous fate?

Actually, if that is the case, I can see Amy deciding that her giant kaiju girlfriend could do with some more protection/nigh-infinite regeneration, and taking it upon herself to break down Lung's brain and such until she can link Lung's connection directly to Taylor's shard. Would fit with the whole "Amy is a monster" kinda thing, since she'd basically be slowly killing off bits of Lung while he's still aware, trapped in his own head until there's nothing left of him.

...I've been reading too many Worm fanfics.

I think that's everything? This response got out of hand and I probably forgot to mention half the things I was thinking of when I began typing.

On this bit in particular, now taht she's fully grown, she's like - 2 ish stories tall, but khanivore's only ever seen hunched over. it was mentioned that she gains a lot of height when she straightens up fully (most of that is probably in the neck)
Jesus fucking christ.

yesssssssssssssss this is the kind of stuff i live for as an author

This is the first time she's had a full memory recall in the Khanivore body.
The last body never managed to connect because the 'cancers' had been cut out, leading to the Shard being unable to establish a connection to begin with (canonically i think disabling the coronas prevents people from controlling their powers properly?)

I mean, killing Lung didn't magically solve everything, but that's not really how it works, so yeah, I can see it. I'm surprised she didn't go on a rampage against the entirety of the ABB, but I suppose it's better that way. Besides, since Taylor beheaded that particular snake/gecko/dragon, ABB is likely to collapse anyways, since Oni Lee couldn't organize his way out of a paper bag.

@WhoAmEye , sorry to ask, since it's a very squicky question, but

Did Taylor ever get raped in captivity? Yes, that is intensely messed up, but that was the ABB's whole thing, so.

:( yes
there have been a bunch of hints at sexual assault but fortunately(?) the trauma of everything else has... i don't know. not desensitized, but it's just lumped in there and repressed/attempted to be ignored with the rest

Yeah, I got the hints. It's why I asked. Wanted to make sure if we should merely burn the ABB to the ground and salt the ashes, or slowly cut them with rusty spoons, bathe them in a kiddy pool full of alcohol, electrocute the pool, then set the whole thing on fire.

blinks
I like the way you think,
but i think we should also roll them in salt
just to be certain we've covered all our elemental bases

He grabbed it, tried to shove it aside but - it was like he was just a strong man. I was two monster trucks worth of chitin and muscle and bone, and he didn't even slow the strike. A crunch of blood and scale and he roared, panting and sliding backwards. "Fu'th ooo fu' nllphaaa!"

I - what? Fuck you, fucking… pha?
I am also curious as to what Lung's last words were.

So, speculation as to the various reactions to this:

Protectorate - We have a pretext to arrest someone! Go, go, go, go!
New Wave - Still processing Amy having a sex life.
Empire - We need to make some sort of power play, to retaliate for Hookwolf, but-
Coil - So, I couldn't help but notice that the only villainous faction left that I didn't have influence with was also the one that I've been collecting the civilian identities of. I mean, there's coincidence, and then there's providence.

Holy shit that fight was brilliant. The first roar echoing into silence, the brutal execution and then when things might be settling down along comes someone with good intentions.

Side note I don't think that's how drop tail lizards work.

That was totally bloody glorious :D

If the PRT actually tries to come down on Taylor here then they can get fucked with a rusty spoon

Hope she takes her monster body back to Annette, because really most of her problems with Annette should be gone now given she now knows the whole memory erasure was because she had horrific memories that cause her to want to kill herself and I think it would be kinda stupid to hate her for that and really like any other piece of Tinker tech her monster body should be continually upgraded. As Annette get more money and more resources she can build better tools to build better upgrades for her.

Amy and Taylor please join Eden now. Regardless I hope they don't go back to the Dallon's house because it's inevitable that the PRT/Protectorate will try to either arrest her for killing Lung or use it to force her under their control and going back to where the PRT KNOW they are is moronic.

Man, that was brutal. Cutting the head off the worst gang in the Bay (human trafficking/slavery on top of all the shit the other gangs are also doing), literally.

Sad to see Emma is as psychologically damaged as in canon. Sophia needs a Trump rating for mind fuckery.

Does the PRT know exactly which giant monster Taylor is?

You are a goddes.
I got kaiju vibes at first and then it turned it to a great kurbstomp of a battle.
Also, Just to clear the air, she RIPPED his head off, which is a better description thank beheading. Beheading implies cutting off.
And then the feels, it's still a bit quick, which is expected cause Taylor's apparently thinking faster than usual and has 2 bodies to process information and emotions, and it's still intense cause of the feedback loops( which, well done illustrating, and if not , your brain is amazing for doing it for you unconsciously) and we see how that affects her in battle cause she doesn't panic at all but still fights with both style and strategy.
Also, humans are primarily tool users and nurturers, but khanivore is pure predator, so her power usage should be completely different, as we can see from the battles cause she completely ignores her surroundings on fire to kill her prey( and this is a first I've ever thought of LUNG as prey).
It also just shows how different her mindset is, and why it's a bad idea to give a human natural weapons and the neural chemistry to use them to effectively.
And I've read it 3 times now
Damn
Just...Damn

There have been so many times throughout this fic where I was on the verge of dropping it due to nothing ever getting better, but this right here was worth the wait and all the suffering.

Just finished binging this and I've got to say, this is one of the best fics I've read all year. It's basically Kadathnip with the elements of:
- biotinker fuckery that's down-to-earth (can't make something out of nothing, sorry fido)
- the trauma of a discontinuous existence
- lesbiab 🏳️‍🌈
- people being messy, but communicating and reacting like human beings and not just "ohoho time for sexy time with the young supermodel" (no offense to the other poly fics out there but capes have capital F Fucked up neuroses)
- memory problems / memory basilisks
- triggers that are even more horrible than canon
- Carol and Annette cagematch for the least healthy relationship to their daughters
