Dungeons and Dragons Megathread

If I ever play a Wizard, I'm going to be one that just supports and not focusing on DPS because I just want to make a character around that both character-wise and moveset is based around making friends in character.

I really enjoy planar binding/allying as a concept for a caster, but it's a lot of work for the GM and also means either you or him end up playing a lot of extra characters.

I just find the D&D system to be really bland to dollcraft with compared to something like the modularity of PF2E at this point

What, they couldn't get artist permission to reuse the original?

The artists lets PFSRD use it, so that seems doubtful...

Huh, the rest don't look that bad, but then again I'm on my phone and might not be seeing all the details.

Seriously though, they botched the Barbarian pretty badly.

Oh, the Iconic Character art changes. Amiri aside they're generally an imp[rovement - especially since Harsk now has the focus put on weapons that aren't terrible. Amiri being paler could make sense if they wanted to emphasise the 'frozen wasteland barbarian' thing but she just looks emaciated.

Now if only they'd replace or retcon one of the 5 iconic human characters with a half-orc or half-elf...

This is petty of me but I Do Not Like This Change.
I'm clearly in the minority here, but I actually kinda do? The left-hand version (which I'm assuming is the original) has a face that's too 'runway model' for me to really get into, especially with how her grimace looks like an expression you could normally only see if you combed through 120fps camera footage of someone giving a lengthy speech for the one millisecond where they looked like Mr. Ed.

Meanwhile, the right-hand one has a much more Jeremy Jarvis-esque color palette and some Jarvis-esque flourishes, and I fucking love Jeremy Jarvis, so it's already winning points for that in my book. Likewise, the more sickly, 'Fairuza Balk coming down off of PCP' energy coming off of her is just more interesting to me. Barbarians who get their rage ability from actual psychosis, heavy drug use, possession by spirits, or some other method beyond "I get angry" are my jam, and everything about this gaunt, stringy-haired lunatic with bashed-up fingers radiates "I have eaten at least a quarter pound of human flesh in my life, and some of it was my own".

Speaking of, the little touch of giving the hands a bit more definition instead of hiding them behind the pill bug gauntlets is just a more engaging visual design choice to me, especially with how the original's posture and grip on the sword looks like she's about to start using it to play washboard for a jug band.

Okay, yeah, that makes me like it even more - because now that you've established she's from the ice wastes, that means she's either got scarring from frostbite on her hands, or is running around murdering people with numb, barely functional frostbite fingers. In either case, fucking metal. Also pretty clear evidence she's bugfuck insane and probably would have died from a preventable illness without the party cleric, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Could use either more definition, or being more clear about the starving look, preferably the first, since she's supposed to be swinging a sword made for a 15ft tall frost giant.

I agree with you on that. She doesn't look strong enough to pick up a 4 or 5 ft long slab of metal, let alone use it effectively as a weapon. If her strength is magical that could be excused though. I haven't read up on any of the official settings to know anything about that character.

On a different note, does anyone know of cool magical items/artifacts for a good aligned PF1E Magus? I'm helping a player who's rather busy IRL build one as a new PC. AFAIK Magi need a free hand for spell combat, so I've been avoiding two-handed weapons.

Artifacts will probably serve as focuses for shorter campaign arcs, while magical items might be more immediately attainable or even in the character's starting inventory. She's coming in to the campaign at level 15 and the party already has a couple artifacts in their possession (including one piece of the Book of the Damned), so aiming to acquire one is a reasonable goal.

Not useful, but when people mention actually using artifacts, I immediately think of Finis.

C'mon, you know you want to. :V

Edit: for magic items, If you allow 3.5 materiel, the Spare Hand is fantastic for anyone short of hands to hold things with.

Other than the normal suite of Belt of Dexterity, Headband of Intelligence, Ring of Protection, Amulet of Natural Armor, and Cloak of Resistance, a couple of items come to mind, Spellstrike Gloves are immensely useful as is the Ring of Arcane Mastery. Another really good option is the Cyclops Helm (which is absurdly cheap).

Artifact wise there the Book of Infinite Spells and the Crown of the Simurgh.

She's got the basics down with a +2 belt of physical perfection (+2 str, dex, & con), +2 headband of mental perfection (+2 int, wis, cha), + 4 cloak of resistance, +3 ring of protection, +2 amulet of natural armor & +2 amulet of bullet protection (merged into one item, which the GM allows so long as you pay the full price for both), and Spellguard Bracers (+2 to all concentration checks, reroll a check 3/day). I hadn't seen the Cyclops Helm and I'll give the Spellstrike Gloves another looks. Though the Magus doesn't have a lot of spells that benefit from the gloves.

This Magus may well be the strangest Magus ever. She's an Eldrich Scion which makes her a cha-based spontaneous caster and gives her a bloodrager bloodline, the player asked me to focus on battlefield control spells (Wall of Fire, Hydraulic Torrent, Greater Grease, etc) instead of damage spells, and her feats are focused on teamwork to utilize Shared Training (shares teamwork feats with allies). The reasoning for all this is the Paladin, Ninja, & Alchemist have damage output fairly well covered, but the Cleric is the only one with battlefield control spells. Said Cleric is also the primary healer & summoner of the group, so she rarely has time to use her tactical spells. The player thinks the Cleric's player would appreciate some help in managing all the non-damage aspects of battle. The player also wants to play a magus over a sorcerer, for some reason. I think he (the player) likes the idea of being able to cast tactical spells and dish out elemental damage in melee with pool strike, at least on paper.

Now before anyone asks if this player knows what he's doing, the answer is: no, not really. He hasn't had all that much time to dig into the possibilities of magic. Both his previous character (different campaign) and current character were purely martial characters. He's switching because he's tired of his current character's int score of 5, which prevents him from roleplaying in a lot of situations. I haven't had much time to dig into the high end potential of magic either, though I'll have to fairly soon here for a good-aligned NPC wizard.

Sorry for rambling a bit, I just thought some context about the Magus I'm helping build might bring to mind some items I haven't seen yet. There's a lot of wondrous items I haven't looked at.
