The Rebellion of Akuma Homura against the Law of Cycles has caused irreparable damage to the Human Order. In an effort to restore balance, Alaya has sent their best man back in time to prevent calamity and set the timeline on a more proper course. If only it were that easy.

Now, Akemi Homura is forced to team up with the heroic spirit Emiya in order to make it through this most unusual timeline to defeat Walpurgisnacht and save the day. New allies, new enemies, and a new magic system to contend with, all rolled into one package.

This is a most unusual timeline indeed.

Day 17 Chapter 1

Day 17 Begin
Special Omake Episode

"Welcome back to Japan, McRemitz-san," the man at the Customs desk says as he finishes his perusal through your passport with an affixed stamp and a smile. "I hope you enjoy your stay."

Bazett Fraga McRemitz, reads the name on your passport, snapping it closed as the Customs official returns it to you. With a terse smile, you slide it into the pocket of your suit jacket, adjusting your tie ever so slightly as the motion disturbs its place. "Hopefully better than the last," you respond, giving your shifting luggage one last heft as you walk away.

That had been three hours ago that you arrived at Tokyo International Airport on a direct flight from London. The Shinkansen will be arriving at your destination in twenty minutes, so you decide to take this time to make one last review of the information you had been sent. While all the other passengers can be seen readying their luggage for departure, you remain seated, undoing the latches of your attaché case.

"Subject number one- Mami Tomoe," you say to yourself, flipping through the folder containing the information printouts you had been sent. A picture is included, showing the round, youthful face of a young girl with warm golden eyes and blonde hair pinned into drill-curls by a pair of flower-shaped hairpins. She's smiling, but there's more than her fair share of melancholy in her smile. "Age fifteen. Lost her parents in a car accident three years ago, and currently lives alone in a highrise apartment complex a few blocks from school. Top marks in all her classes, and not involved in any afterschool activities. Limited circle of friends, of which Homura Akemi (see below) is a member. On March sixteenth, she became the first of three subjects to present with Command Seals. Servant unknown."

"Subject number two- Homura Akemi, age fourteen." Another picture included, showing a pale girl with cold royal purple eyes and hair the colour of raven feathers. There's a certain indescribable sharpness to the image, as though the girl in question is staring at you through the ink of the photograph. "Lost her mother last year, and then her father three months later. Officially registered at Saint Hilda's in Tokyo for her seventh year, but her heart condition caused her to miss the entire school year. Transferred in to Mitakihara Junior High at the start of her eighth year. Top marks in all her classes, and not involved in any afterschool activities. Limited circle of friends, of which Mami Tomoe (see above) is a member. On March seventeenth - the date of her transfer into Mitakihara - she became the second of three subjects to present with Command Seals. Akemi is registered as living by herself, though friends have made mention of a live-in guardian named Archer. Presumed to be her servant."

"Subject number three- Kirika Kure, age fifteen. Officially registered as living with her mother, no father in sight. Fairly low marks all across the board, displays little interest in school." Between the sharp and lopsided grin, the inconsiderate mess that is her untamed chin-length dark chocolate hair, and that mischievous glint in her amber-coloured eyes, you can almost feel the delinquency she exudes. "On March twenty-first, she became the third of three subjects to present with Command Seals. Servant unknown."

"All three subjects have one trait shared in common- A silver ring worn on the left middle finger. Purpose unknown. Perhaps used to denote membership in a secret mage's union?"

You check the time with a sigh, and return the folder to your attaché case, sealing it up before moving to collect your other pieces of luggage as the train rolls to a stop. The doors slide open, and you join the other passengers as they depart.

It's been close to six years since you were last in Japan, by your reckoning, and your Japanese is a little rusty, but thanks to the map included with your information you manage to find your way to the hotel in under an hour. You've arranged for a five-day stay at the Mitakihara Hyatt, though
[ ] you're hoping to be out of here before that. Being called away like this so suddenly, and by that person, has put you in a sour mood.
[ ] you're hoping to take no more time than you need to. You're here on business and you need to remain professional and alert at all times.
[ ] you're hoping to stay a little longer. Even if it's work, it'll be nice to get away from those stiffs at the Association even for just a few days.

It's a little before twelve noon as you depart from the hotel, leaving behind the rolling suitcase filled with the bulk of your necessaries, as well as the over-the-shoulder metal cylinder and its contents that had given you so much trouble at Customs. All you take with you as you head towards the school is your attaché case, carrying inside the folder containing all the information that person had sent to you when they requested your presence here in Mitakihara, as well as-

"Can I see some identification, ma'am?" asks the man at the front desk.

You nod, producing a set of papers to show to him. "I'm with the Health Ministry. I'm here to meet with," as you speak, the man looks over your documents. "Caren Ortensia, regarding a few recent changes in policy."

"Of course, ma'am." They must be damn good forgeries that person sent you, because he returns them to you with no issue. Apparently, the fact that you don't even look remotely Japanese does little to convince him that you aren't really with the Health Ministry so long as you have the proper documentation. "Nurse Ortensia is on the second floor, just past the bridge. Do you need someone to take you there?"

"No thank you. I believe I can manage by myself."

In hindsight, perhaps you should have taken him up on his offer. This school is massive. But eventually, you make it to your destination.

"I didn't believe you when you said you were working as a nurse at a junior high school," you say as you pull up a chair. "Caren Ortensia, a school nurse? What the hell could have possibly made you want to pick this job of all things?"

"Serving as the school nurse is one of only a handful of ways in which I can indulge my pleasures in a socially acceptable manner."

You can't help but roll your eyes at her comment. "Of course you'd say that."

[ ] Wat do?

Friday, 1 April, 2011

Major objectives:
Bazett
- Investigate and interrogate the three identified subjects
- Determine if the three identified subjects pose a threat to the Mage's Association in any way
- Determine if a Holy Grail War has really started up in Mitakihara

Hello and welcome back, my fellows!

If you're joining us for the first time, you're probably wondering why we're starting off at Day 17. Well, the first thread - which actually starts here - was only adopted by me; I didn't make the thread, which I only found out too late was causing problems where my players weren't getting notifications that posts were up. It was decided that once I got to a good stopping point - that being the end of Part 1 - I'd make a new thread so that I'd be the one in control of threadmarking and notifications and whatnot, and hopefully that would sort out any of the above problems.

I strongly encourage that new players read through the first sixteen days in order to get themselves up to speed, but the basic gist of the quest is that servants have sprung up in Mitakihara, and it's up to Homura and Archer to figure out what's going on and why, while attempting to keep Madoka safe from a world that's growing ever more dangerous by the day. Play switches between Homura and Archer at player-requested intervals or whenever I feel like it, and in addition to the regular "[x] vote here to do stuff" method of play, the option also exists to play as Alaya and send messages to Archer.

And to both returning members and new ones, no, we have not suddenly turned into Bazett Quest. The change will last for only this day, and if you want to know why then look no further than the in-quest date for your explanation.

Enjoy!

Characters
Akemi Homura is one of the two main characters of this quest, along with her servant Archer. She's been through timeline after timeline to get to this point, but after countless tries things are finally starting to look up. She's built up a solid block of friends and allies, and with her servant and surrogate father Archer (and now True Assassin as well) there's no way this timeline can go wrong!

Oh, who are we kidding. This is Akemi Homura we're talking about. Suffering follows her like the plague, and the introduction of servants to the mix just means that she's got a different set of challenges to overcome this time around.

Magic: Timestop, Projection, Reinforcement, ice
Grief Seeds: 33
Runes:
Freeze 5/5 [Max]

--Finitora Freccia Minore - A single arrow with a wide-area freezing effect and freezing splash damage (same as regular ice arrows)
--Finitora Freccia Maggiore - A self-replicating wide-area scattershot, with a wide-area freezing effect and freezing splash damage
Drain 1/0
Stasis 1/0
Transfer 4/4 (next level 5/1)
-Allows for a moderate amount of energy transfer between two bodies.

-Allows the user to "hold hands" with the mana of another living person or persons.
Kaname Madoka is Homura's greatest love, and the safety of Kaname Madoka is Homura's greatest priority, but Madoka just wishes she knew how to help her friends and the people around her. Despite being tentatively aware of the world of the puella magi around her, she doesn't realize just how valuable the power contained within her soul is.

As it turns out, that power is immeasurable. Her Origin of Kindness was to be expected, but there's absolutely nothing that could make her dual Elements of World and Leyline make any amount of sense, and for someone with no mage lineage having more magic circuits than can accurately be quantified is beyond miraculous.

Affection - 10
This timeline has thus far been kind to Miki Sayaka. She has yet to sell her soul to the Incubator, she hasn't had to see anyone get their head bitten off, and she and Homura are on very good terms, all things considered. It's just too bad that, despite knowing how dangerous being a puella magi can be, she still harbors a secret desire to take up the mantle, if it means being able to protect her friends from the dangers of the world; and, unbeknownst to Sayaka, she possesses the potential to summon the Saber servant, should she ever decide to contract and become a puella magi. She also possesses a Water Element and Music Origin, though her complete lack of magic circuits means that if she wants to learn magecraft like Hitomi, she'll have to stick to applications that don't require her to use her own mana.

Sayaka has recently discovered that she is bisexual, and is currently testing the waters of her new relationship with Kyouko. Here's hoping everything goes well for them.

Affection - 8
Shizuki Hitomi is not a man-stealing bitch. She is not a horrible person. And she does not believe that girls can't love girls. What Shizuki Hitomi is, is a young girl in love with her best friend's best friend. Despite a traditional upbringing at the hands of her parents, she is making an active attempt to broaden her tolerances, and accepts that Homura and Madoka love each other in a romantic sense. And she's trying to be as supportive as possible of all her friends and help them through their problems in whatever way she can, whatever those problems may be.

Upon the discovery of active magic circuits within her body - only four, though their A-ranked quality helps to mitigate their low number - Hitomi has recently taken to studying introductory magecraft. She's just a beginner, but her Origin of 'Structure' is very conductive to her studies. One could say that she has completed a basic mastery of Projections, and is eager to move on to other facets of her studies.

Affection - 8
Tomoe Mami is Mitakihara's most experienced veteran, and the master of the incredibly powerful Caster servant. Despite her seniority, she has largely yielded authority to Akemi Homura when it comes to organizing the coordination of their alliance. She's tough, capable, and willing to do what needs to be done to keep Mitakihara and its citizens safe, though she would prefer it be done without unnecessary bloodshed.

Affection - 8.5
Magic: Ribbon construction, allied combat enhancements, Grief dampening, enhanced tracking, minor magic sealing
Grief Seeds: 16
Runes:
- Wunjo
- Berkano
Sakura Kyouko is rude, abrasive, a veteran puella magi like her onetime mentor Tomoe Mami, and master of the Rider servant. She doesn't go to school, preferring to spend her time beating the unsuspecting at the local DDR machines for lunch money. She's generally useful as an ally, even if she has to be bribed with food in order to lend her assistance.

Currently, she's living with Mami in her highrise apartment, and has recently entered into a romantic relationship with Sayaka after weeks of neither of them being able to spit out their feelings for one another.

Affection - 7.5
Magic: Illusions, enhanced tracking, flame manipulation
Grief Seeds: 23
Runes:
- Berkano
- Sowilo
Mikuni Oriko honestly just wanted to do the right thing. Unfortunately, her over-reliance on her clearly faulty precognition has led to her believing that the wrong thing was actually the right thing. Master of the Lancer servant and lover of Kure Kirika, Mikuni Oriko has made a lot of mistakes and has a lot to answer for, and faced with the choice of death or capitulation, has allied herself with Akemi Homura and her bloc for the chance at redemption. To the surprise of everyone, she's actually made real progress towards redeeming herself in the eyes of her allies.

In a surprisingly twist of Fate, Oriko is actually related to Caren Ortensia- Their grandmothers were sisters, and their mothers - cousins to each other - shared a lifelong friendship in spite of never having met face-to-face. Oriko would very much like to strike up the same friendship with Caren that their mothers once shared, though her cousin's reticence may put a damper on her efforts.

Affection - 9
Magic: Precognition, advanced barrier and Bounded Field construction, advanced healing magic
Grief Seeds: 38
Runes:
-Othala
- Uruz
In stark contrast to her more level-headed lover, Kure Kirika has no regrets about her actions. The master of the Berserker servant has no reason to feel remorse for the lives she has taken as a result of Oriko's choices- And why should she? Everything she's done has been in the service of Oriko, which mean it can't be wrong, even if it's wrong! She'll follow Oriko anywhere, even to the depths of Hell!

As it turns out, what causes Kirika to be so loyal towards and so non-functional without Mikuni Oriko is because of something to do with her wish rewriting her personality. She's still loyal to Oriko, but now that Oriko is firmly on the side of good her efforts to be useful to Oriko have shifted, and she's no longer skulking about looking for the next kill to bring back to her mistress. It also turns out that Kirika is, contrary to all prior evidence, capable of forming and maintaining emotional connections and interests with people and things that aren't Mikuni Oriko. She has a library of videogames, anime, and manga she enjoys entirely without Oriko's involvement; and despite living apart from her she clearly cares about her mother very much. Maybe her grandparents too, if she'd talk about them more.

She's Homura's official Big Sis, through and through. Good god, Kirika has come a long way from the person she used to be. We're all proud of her.

Affection - 10
Magic: Time alter, improved mana transference, mana vampirism
Grief Seeds: 32
Runes:
- Fehu
- Gebo
Saber servant, Shinmen Musashi at your service! ... Wait a minute, isn't Miyamoto Musashi supposed to be a guy? Well, yes, the key word being supposed to. This is the elder sister of the boy who was born to the name Bennosuke, who grew up to study the sword using his name, and who became Miyamoto Musashi in his stead. But make no mistake, this is the correct Miyamoto Musashi of this timeline, not to be confused with the dimension-hopping Saber servant of a certain other timeline.

True name - Emiya Shirou
Master - Akemi Homura

Archer is one of the two main characters of this quest, along with his master and surrogate daughter Akemi Homura. Sent down to Mitakihara by Alaya, Archer at first had only the vaguest idea of what he was supposed to accomplish, but as more and more details reveal themselves and as the threats keep mounting, one thing has become clear- Protect Kaname Madoka, no matter the cost.

Over the course of his stay in Mitakihara, Archer's beautiful dream has come back to him, and rather than remain the bitter and cynical warrior we all knew him as in the Visual Novel, he's once again taken up the mantle of a hero of justice, striving to help the people around him however he can for as long as he's here.

Affection - 10

True name - Brynhildr
Master - Mikuni Oriko
Lancer is the dutiful and reliable servant of Mikuni Oriko. In addition to acting as the butler of the Mikuni household when not being used in combat, Lancer has taken to teaching her master and allies the art of rune magic to great success. All five members of the Puella Magi Holy Quintet have learned and can use the ancient runes thanks to Lancer.

Just, don't make her mad. Seriously; it's not a good idea.

True name - Achilles
Master - Sakura Kyouko
Rider is a pretty cool dude. He's hoping to have just as much fun here as he did the last time he was in a Grail War.

True name - Gilgamesh
Master - Tomoe Mami
Gilgamesh the King is a spirit too powerful to be confined to a single class, deigning to appear as a Caster as the vessel of Archer was already taken. Think not of him as the King of of the Babylonia singularity, but rather as the King who would have been had that singularity never occurred. A valuable ally and nowhere close to the asshole that was his Archer incarnation, if frequently stubborn to lend a hand when he feels his help is not required.

True name - Hassan of Serenity
Master - Akemi Homura
While Jack the Ripper may have been the most proper Assassin servant for a War fought in the world of the puella magi, it was always one of the Hassan-i-Sabbah who were meant to be summoned as the True Assassin of the Mitakihara War. The Hassan of Serenity has answered Akemi Homura's call, but what her purpose will be in this war remains to be seen. Her constant desire to be touched by someone who can withstand her poisonous body makes her troublesome to deal with, so until a more permanent solution can be found, let's hope she doesn't accidentally poison any of Homura's loved ones.
Affection - 8

True name - Lancelot du Lac
Master - Kure Kirika
Through the use of a Command Seal, Berserker's master has lifted the Mad Enhancement which plagued his mind. Because of this, Berserker's stats have been altered, and they now represent a point closer to his incarnation as a Saber-class servant. While his base stats are now lower than when his Mad Enhancement was active, the return of his mind means that Berserker has been made an even more capable and deadly member of the team; and as well, his final Noble Phantasm, the holy sword Arondight, has been permanently unlocked for use at his master's discretion.
Caren Ortensia is a member of the Holy Church, who was sent to Mitakihara three years ago on assignment, where she serves undercover as the nurse at Mitakihara Junior High, a position she took because it enables her to only have to deal with children who are sick or hurt. While obviously no sane school board would let such a woman anywhere near children otherwise, it seems there's more at work than meets the eye, and what the Church wants from her in Mitakihara is anyone's guess.

In a surprisingly twist of Fate, Caren is actually related to Mikuni Oriko- Their grandmothers were sisters, and their mothers - cousins to each other - shared a lifelong friendship in spite of never having met face-to-face. Unfortunately, Caren shows little interest in striking up the same friendship with Oriko, unless it also involves turning her cousin into an asset for the Church.

Affection - 4.5
An agent of the Mage's Association and master of Cú Chulainn, the Lancer servant of the previous Grail War from seven years ago, called from London to Mitakihara by Caren Ortensia in response to all the plain bizarre shit that's been going on in the past few weeks. She doesn't look too scary, but it's probably not a good idea to get into a fight with her; she's a master of unarmed combat and an expert at taking down non-compliant mages. So far, she has proven to be a competent, not-quite-ally to the puella magi of Mitakihara, but being an agent from what is ostensibly a rival faction of magic users still makes her existence in the city an unknown variable, and possibly a threat.

Following a fight with the intangible familiars of the witch Elsa Maria, Bazett went to Mifune City to replace her prosthetic arm which was destroyed in the fight. There, master mage and puppetmaker Aozaki Touko gave her Airgetlám, a top-of-the-line custom-made prosthetic arm equipped with the ability to recreate the Claíomh Solais, the sword of light wielded by the one-armed god Nuada of Irish mythology.

Affection - 6
The Lancer servant from the Fifth Fuyuki Holy Grail War, originally summoned by Bazett Fraga McRemitz seven years earlier at the start of the War. Cú Chulainn is in Mitakihara at the order of his then-current master, Caren Ortensia, to help clean up the city from the 'wraiths' infesting it. Cú Chulainn participated in the battle against Elsa Maria on the night of April 15th, and after a brief tussle between his original and then-current master, mastership of Cú Chulainn was finally transferred back to Bazett.

The pair make for quite noisy upstairs neighbors, as Homura learned later that night.

One of the trio of puella magi hailing from Shirome, only Nagatsuki Miyuki has decided to continue living the puella magi lifestyle, likely only due to her having manifested a set of Command Seals. Faced with the responsibility to summon the Saber servant and keep the peace come Walpurgisnacht, Miyuki has decided to stick around where her friends have not.

Soft-hearted, at least to a point, and with an unexpected dry side to her as well, Nagatsuki Miyuki has taken the murder of her friend worse than either Asako Koito or Namekata Akira, having taken to drinking herself to sleep to cope with the loss; and for good reason, as it turns out that Miyuki was in love with Komaki, despite knowing that the latter likely would have displayed the same contempt for her as she did to Mikuni Oriko were she to find out. As a puella magi, she fights using her skill as a fencer and with a pistol capable of employing attacks based on the four Elements. She also possesses the ability to see through illusions and is immune to external sources of Grief thanks to the nature of her wish magic, and has just recently come into her own as the master of the Saber servant. How she'll fit in with the rest of the team is anyone's guess.

Affection - 6
Grief Seeds - 9 (three for each member of the Shirome Trio)
The divorced single mother of Kure Kirika. Because she was forced to drop out of high school when her then-boyfriend got her pregnant, she has to work multiple jobs in order to provide for herself and secure her daughter's future. Recently has developed a crush on Archer, and his desire to help her take control of her life probably isn't helping his case any. Only time, and more than a few pushes from Kaname Junko, her supervisor and professional matchmaker, will tell if her feelings blossom into something more. Or whether Homura and Kirika end up as step-sisters.
Affection - 7
(The Archery Club is too poor to afford a picture to put here)

With only five members, the Archery Club is MItakihara's most poorly-funded club. Starting from the first Tuesday in April, they meet in the run-down archery shack out behind the track field every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday after classes. They're 100% reputable, despite what their club's dirt-poor appearance would have you believe.
Members:
Kasuga Shinji - Club captain, in the same grade as Tomoe-san but in a different class. Has a crush on Tomoe-san, but is unwilling to verbalize his feelings to her in person.
Mochizumi Nico - Club vice-captain, the tan girl with messy hair that sits next to Homura. Has a crush on Kasuga Shinji, but doesn't want to be the one to make the first move, and is stubbornly waiting for him to get over his feelings for Tomoe-san in the hopes that he will notice her.
Tanaka Harou - A third-year who has notoriously bad luck with women. An orphan who lives with his grandfather - whom he often gets into confrontation with - and a female cousin around his age.
Suzuhara Daigo - A second-year with a sister who is in the hospital. He thinks his next-door neighbor might like him, but is afraid to approach her because the rest of her family terrifies him.
Akemi Homura - The Archery Club's newest member.

Day 17 Chapter 2
[X] Plan First Step Into Paradise

You can't help but roll your eyes at Ortensia's comment. "Of course you'd say that," you say, as the silver-haired woman slides a saucer of tea towards you. "In all seriousness, though, this is bloody big. How'd you even get your hands on this information?"

"I'm the school nurse, McRemitz," Caren responds, sipping her own tea with a look that borders uncomfortably on an emotion you'd rather not think about. "And one of our masters recently had surgery to mitigate a congenital heart defect. She has to come see me every day to take her medicine. It's easy to notice things about a person when you see them that often."

"Homura Akemi, right?" You're in Japan now, Bazett; you're not reading an English-language printout. Gotta remember name order if you want to get anywhere. "... Sorry, Akemi Homura. I keep forgetting that Japanese names go backwards. Anyway, was she the one that clued you in to the fact that the Holy Grail War's started up in this city?"

"It would have been rather difficult for her to have done so, given that Tomoe Mami was seen with Command Seals the day before Akemi Homura transferred in."

"Then, who was it?"

"None of them, really. At least, not all at once." Ortensia looks out the window as the end-of-lunch bell rings, and you opt to join her. You see several clusters of students funneling in through the front gate, after having left school grounds to seek lunch elsewhere. Your stomach growls just thinking about lunch. The last time you ate had been over Russian airspace too many hours ago. "I saw them on Tomoe Mami completely by chance, and I didn't think all that much of it at the time. It was an inconspicuous sort of pattern, and I thought she might have just gotten burnt or something. I saw them again on Akemi Homura the next day, but it wasn't until Kure Kirika showed up for class one Monday sporting what were clearly Command Seals that I realized it wasn't just a random thing. The next day, Akemi Homura came into my office feeling lightheaded, and as we were talking she got really jittery when I mentioned that she wasn't the only girl at school to have them, and that's when it really all came together for me."

"That would have been the twenty-second, right? That was still over a week before you got in contact with me. Why the wait?"

"Well, I wasn't sure at first whether a Grail War had actually started, or was only about to start, and I wanted to wait and see what I was looking at before getting in contact. Of course, by the time the first battle had started, I knew exactly what I was dealing with."

"You mean the War has already started? Why didn't you say so sooner?"

"I told you, McRemitz. I wanted to make sure I knew exactly what was going on before I got in contact with the Association. I didn't want to waste their valuable time if, for example, I was only dealing with some low-level mages who had somehow lucked into a set of almost-Command Seals for their pet familiar, or something. I did my due diligence and waited until I was absolutely sure that a Grail War had started. The night I contacted you, I saw two servants going at it over the train bridge that crosses into neighboring Kazamino. I couldn't see much, but from the way they fought I presume it was Archer and Berserker. Berserker disappeared before Archer could finish her off, though."

"Archer and Berserker," you say, pondering on the information you had been given. "That would be... Akemi, probably, and one other. What can you tell me about her?"

"What can I tell you about Akemi? Well, she's a quiet girl, for the most part, and she keeps to just a small group of friends. Exceptionally bright- She took top ranking in all her classes after just a week- Even PE, which came as a surprise to me given her heart condition. I'm fairly certain that she's got it bad for one of her classmates, but to my knowledge she hasn't said anything to them. Or if she has, they've made no move to make it official."

Good student, quiet, and apparently more than a little shy. Somehow, only that last part surprises you. The picture you had been given hardly conveyed "shyness" very well. "Can I speak with her?"

"Of course. That won't be a problem at all." Ortensia ceases her window-gazing, turning towards the phone at her desk. "Hello, main office? This is Nurse Ortensia. Do you think you could have Akemi Homura sent over to me for just a second? No, everything's fine. I just need to talk to her about her medication, that's all. ... Thank you."

That sounded almost professional. You scoff. "The staff must love you."

"Oh, the trick to keeping this job is, I never let the higher-ups know how much I love seeing a child in misery." You have to roll your eyes for a second time.

It takes a few minutes, but eventually Akemi Homura arrives, looking, feeling, and sounding exactly like you had imagined she would. Even that sort of cold undercurrent in her voice as she says "You wanted to see me, Nurse Ortensia?" upon entering and seeing you, is exactly the way you had imagined her to be.

"Well, not I, specifically." You'll take the confused look on Akemi's face as she turns her gaze on you to be your cue.

"My name is Bazett Fraga McRemitz." You introduce yourself in the best Japanese you can muster. "Nurse Ortensia requested that I come to Mitakihara and investigate a few things that have the potential to cause some very important people a lot of worry." You can see Akemi tensing up the more you speak. "I'll cut right to the chase. What do you know about the Holy Grail War?"

"Only that the Grail was destroyed seven years ago, and that further Grail Wars should have been rendered impossible."

"Then perhaps you can explain to me where you got your Command Seals from?" You clearly see Akemi's eyes dart down to her hand. Your own eyes follow suit, tracing the lines of an ornate diamond pattern broken up into three distinct segments. And there on her other hand, right where the report said it would be, is that strange silver ring that all three masters have in common. "Relax. I'm only here to gather information. I won't get involved in whatever you and the other masters are up to unless I think I absolutely have to. I just want to know if a Grail War has actually started up in this city, or if there's something else going on entirely."

Akemi raises her hand, staring deeper at the sigils. "McRemitz-san, to be perfectly honest I don't know how I obtained these Command Seals. As for your second point, while I have been informed that what is going on is some shade of War, it is not particularly a Grail War, if you understand me."

"In other words, it's got all the trappings of a Grail War, but no actual Grail to be had at the end?" Akemi nods, and you mutter under your breath "So, it's like it was six years ago..." ... "And, who was it that gave you this information?"

"That would be my servant."

"Archer, correct?"

Again, you can see Akemi tensing up. "How did you know?"

"You're registered as living by yourself, so talk of a live-in guardian who goes by the name of "Archer" is easy enough to pick up on. And if, say, the right person were to put two and two together, it'd be easy for them to figure out who "Archer" really was. Now, I'm aware that there are two other girls at this school who are masters, Tomoe Mami and Kure Kirika. Is that correct?" Again, Akemi nods. "Good. can you tell me which servants are theirs?"

"I'm afraid that's not my information to reveal to you."

"I figured as much. Can you at least tell me this- Have all seven servants been summoned, and have you encountered any servants belonging to an irregular class?"

"Six of the seven have been summoned, though I am unsure what you mean by an "irregular class"."

"If you don't know, don't worry about it. I'm just trying to get a feel for things, see if everything's going like normal or if there's anything that's off."

"I'm afraid I wouldn't know enough about what's normal to tell you if anything were off."

"I see. And you're absolutely sure that there is, without a doubt, no Holy Grail involved in any of this?" Akemi shakes her head. "What about the person who gave the three of you those rings you're all wearing. I'm assuming they've got something to do with all of this. Have you ever heard them mention anything about a Greater or Lesser Grail?"

Again, Akemi shakes her head. "The one who gave us these rings knows as little as we do, McRemitz-san. In fact, I might go so far as to say that we know more than they do."

Well, that's certainly unexpected. Gotta compose yourself, Bazett. No time to be thrown off. "Maybe you can tell me a little bit more about those rings, or the person who gave them to you. Are they used to denote membership in some kind of mage order? Or were they cursed and forced on you by this person?"

"All of the above, in a manner of speaking." Akemi twists the ring back and forth on her finger as you speak, clearly ill at ease to talk about it. In a tone colder than before, she responds "McRemitz-san, I should be returning to class now if Nurse Ortensia doesn't actually need to speak with me."

You'd like to see if you can get more out of Akemi, but with the sudden shift in tone it's clear that you've hit a brick wall. "Alright then. You can get back to class." Akemi stares at you for a brief moment, before finally leaving.

"So, that was Akemi Homura," you say, quickly jotting down her responses on the back of the page that details her. "She seems nice enough. Intelligent, well-spoken-"

"-And she definitely knows more than she's letting on." Ortensia interjects. You nod your head in agreement.

"Exactly. When I have the time, I'll do some investigating into the residences of her, Tomoe, and Kure. In the mean time," your stomach rumbles, louder than before. "Do you happen to know where I can get some good grub in this city?"

Day 17 Chapter 3
[X] Get some grub
[X] Investigate the residences of Tomoe Mami, Akemi Homura, and Kure Kirika without entering. Look for anything suspicious like certain types of Bounded Fields, the presence of Servants, etc.

"Do you happen to know where I can get some good grub in this city?" you ask, as your stomach continues to growl forcefully.

"Well, there's always the school cafeteria," Ortensia replies, though by that slight smirk on her face you'd guess that to be the worse of many options. "But if you'd rather eat something that won't send you back to me in record time, there's plenty of adequate cafes in the Downtown area. I've recently developed a fondness for the Red Dragon Inn a few blocks from the mall."

"Dare I ask?"

Ortensia's smirk only grows as she says "They've got the best mapo tofu from here to Fuyuki."

"I think I'll pass." Your delivery couldn't have been more deadpan. You move to collect your things, once more leafing through the printouts containing your subject information to check for addresses, before returning the folder to your attaché case. "But thanks for telling me where not to go. I'm sure I can find something in this city that won't kill me with that info. Is there anything else I should know?"

"Just a few things, really. First is that Kure Kirika hasn't shown up for school the past few days. Her mother hasn't called in for her, but there's been nothing on the news about her death, so if something's happened that's caused her to go into hiding you'll probably have your work cut out for you finding her. Second, and probably fortunately for you, there doesn't seem to be anyone serving as an Overseer for this War. Or if there is, they're not operating out of the Church like you would expect."

"Why not?"

"Because the Sakura Church in Kazamino burned down three years ago. Seems the father went mad, murdered his family, and burnt everything down. There's a rumour going around that the eldest daughter survived since her body was never found, but there's no proof that she's alive either. At any rate, no one's rebuilt the church and no one's come in to replace him. Must be good news for you to not have to deal with an Overseer given your own experiences, am I right?"

You clench at your arm as a wave of pain shoots down the length of the appendage. "You really are your father's daughter, aren't you?"

Ortensia simply smiles as she sips her tea. "Guilty as charged."

Unfortunately for you, your stomach would have to wait just a little bit longer. The residence of your first target, Tomoe Mami, is just a few short blocks walking distance from school, and the work-oriented part of your mind sees no reason to make you wait when you know you'll just have to come back down this way after you've eaten. It's much more efficient to get it over and done with now, so that you can at least say you've gotten somewhere in your investigation before you decided to take a lunch break.

As soon as you approach the highrise, you can sense that something is off. It's the middle of the day; you would expect to see some signs of life. Children too young to be attending primary school, housewives, house-sitters or even passersbys. You could sense two servants hanging around at the school, but there's nothing at all here, nothing but a tall, imposing steel-and-glass apartment complex.

Tomoe Mami is registered as living alone, but it seems that alone was far more literal than you thought.

Ah, but wait, there isn't nothing here at all. It's distinct - definitely a Bounded Field of some stripe, and a bloody good one at that - and it's coming from inside the highrise. You take a moment to examine the facts.

Tomoe was the first of the three masters at Mitakihara Junior High to present with Command Seals. However, by Akemi's admission, there are six servants in total so far, meaning that Tomoe is actually only one of six. Akemi also said that she and the other masters likely know more about what's going on than whoever it was in their order who organized them and gave them their rings. But, what does all of it mean?

[ ] Tomoe is an accomplished mage, possibly the ringleader of the Mitakihara masters
[ ] Tomoe has something she's desperately trying to hide from the eyes of the world
-[ ] Tomoe is the one orchestrating this War, and she's trying to hide her attempts at making a replacement Grail
[ ] Tomoe has a Caster servant whose Workshop encompasses the entire highrise
[ ] Other (write-in)

You'll have time to mull over what it means as you eat lunch.

Lunch, comes in the form of greasy, fast-food fish and chips courtesy of the mall food court. It's hardly a fitting substitute for your favourite pub grub, but it's adequate enough to see you through the rest of the daylight hours. When you're done, it's off to - You check your map again to make sure you know where you're going - "The Akemi residence."

Having interacted with Akemi Homura just earlier today, the image of her is quite fresh in your mind, and seeing where she chooses to reside doesn't surprise you at all. It's a two-story, western-style building at a corner intersection a few blocks from the train station. Surrounded on all sides by taller buildings, its appearance of being bathed in darkness even during the brightest hour of the day gives an ominous feel to it. It appears to be a two-residence housing, but there is no nameplate for the upper residence.

As with the Tomoe residence, you can't sense the presence of a servant nearby - with a War going on, you would expect that the servants would be following their masters even to school - but unlike the Tomoe residence you are unable to identify the presence of a Bounded Field. She has an Archer servant, which isn't particularly known for its talents in magecraft, but unless she were a total novice she should still have been able to throw together a basic Bounded Field.

Which brings you to the last of the three target residences. The Kure residence is located in a less-affluent part of the city some distance away to the northwest. It's the sort of neighborhood where cigarette butts and empty beer cans litter the alleyways and there's a perpetual air of unease wherever you walk. You quicken your pace just a little bit- A pretty young foreigner in a fancy suit like yourself, walking around in a dangerous neighborhood? Definitely a recipe for trouble if you're not careful.

Trouble for them, that is.

At last, you arrive at the correct address. It's a rundown four-story apartment complex fenced in on all sides. No servant presence to be sensed, and no Bounded Field. But unlike the other two residences, this one is clearly alive and well despite its derelict appearance. A pair of young children play in the grassy lot out front, watched over by an older gentleman. You can see clothes being hung out to dry, a recently-used barbeque grill set up off to the side, overflowing trashcans; signs of life. For all its many quality flaws, this is the only place that doesn't feel like the residence of a mage.

"Hey! What are you doing here?"

You hear someone shouting from a window on the third floor. You look up, spotting a worn-down woman with her eyes fixed on you. You've been spotted.

Day 17 Chapter 4
[X] Tomoe is an accomplished mage, possibly the ringleader of the Mitakihara masters
[X] Ask the woman if she knows where to find the Kure family. If she happens to be Kirika's mother, question her about Kirika's whereabouts under the guise of a school official. Use hypnosis afterwards to have her forget the conversation and their encounter.
[X] Before heading back to her apartment, check out the abandoned Sakura Church in Kazamino. It would be a good place for a Master to lay low at without arousing suspicion, so its as good a place as any to check out.

"Hey! What are you doing here?"

You hear someone shouting from a window on the third floor. You look up, spotting a worn-down woman with her eyes fixed on you. "Who, me?" you ask, pointing to yourself.

"Yes, you!" she shouts back. "You're with collections, ain't ya? Get outta here! Go tell yer boss I'm all paid up for the month!"

It's the same no matter where in the world you go, isn't it? Low-income neighborhood, and all they can think of when they see someone in a nice suit is that they owe money. Deep down, you sympathize with the woman, knowing all too well what it's like to owe something to someone yourself. "I'm not with collections, ma'am, though I am glad to hear that you're all paid up."

"Then if you're not from collections, who are ya?"

"I'm with the school. I'm trying to find the mother of Kure Kirika. I was told she lived in this building."

The window slams shut, and all goes quiet. In the minutes that follow, you wonder if perhaps that family has a negative reputation among the other residents of the building, and that asking for their whereabouts would get you nowhere. Given the daughter's clearly delinquent appearance, it's not hard to imagine that the mother might be of a similar disposition.

To your surprise, a few minutes later the woman has come down to let you in, and is leading you up the stairs to the third floor. There's always the possibility that this is a trap, and so once inside your senses switch to full alert. But the two of you make it to the third floor unharmed, and once the woman leading you makes it to a certain door, she stops.

"Hey Minako!" she yells, knocking at the door. "Someone from the school's here to talk to ya!"

"Just a second!" calls a voice from within. Shuffling can be heard, and the door opens up to reveal a woman with a striking resemblance to your target, if perhaps a little older and a little more frayed around the edges. As the door opens and you see the other woman returning to her own apartment, you pay close attention to which door she stops at, marking its location in your head. "Well, come on in."

No matter how run-down this building or its inhabitants might look, you take care to remember that you're entering the home of a mage as you step inside the Kure residence. As you remember your Japanese customs and take off your shoes at the door, your eyes scan for anything that could be used against you as a weapon, just in case things get hairy.

An umbrella stand sits in the foyer along with two pairs of shoes. As you follow the woman through the hallway, you spot a number of framed photographs sitting on whatever shelf space they can find. Most of them are of Kure and her mother with no father in sight, as per your report; but one of them, hung up on a door marked "Kirika's Room" in bright orange, shows Kure in close physical contact with another girl. She has long hair the colour of white ash bark, eyes like emeralds, and is wearing the uniform of a different school. You can plainly see that Kure is wearing that ring in the picture, but the other girl is not.

Kure's mother leads you into the main room, gesturing for you to take a seat at the table across from her. "Sorry I don't really have anything to offer you to drink," she says. "I have tap water, but that's about it. The coffee maker's busted, and I'm all out of teas. Don't even have soda. I'd offer you a beer, but I imagine the school doesn't want you drinking on the job, so..."

"Water's fine. I didn't really come here for a drink." The chair creaks as you sit down, and Kure's mother reaches into the cabinet to grab you a glass. The water looks inoffensive enough- It's still crystal clear, and you didn't notice the mother putting anything in it or sense her using magecraft of any kind. It should be safe to drink.

"Right." The mother sits down at the table across from you, with a mixture of worry and disappointment showing in her amber eyes. "So, what's Kirika done this time?"

"Well, it's more about what she hasn't done, ma'am. It appears that she's been absent from school for the past few days. I'm just trying to find out where she might have gone, or if there's anything troubling her that might have caused her not to show up."

The mother shakes her head, letting out a sigh as she says "Kirika doesn't really live here all that much, actually. Hasn't for the past couple of months. Maybe comes around on Sunday if she feels like it, but generally she's not at home."

"I see. Is she perhaps living with her father, then?"

"I should damn well hope not! That bastard..." Fists clench and fires rage in the form of the mother Kure. "Has no right to my daughter after what he did!"

You hope against the worst when you ask "What did he do?"

"Oh, you know how it is with men like him. They tell you they love you, that you're the only one in their life, and then one day, BAM!" A fist slams against the table for added effect. "You catch him in bed with another woman while your daughter's watching TV just in the other room! No, Kirika's nowhere near that bastard if she knows what's good for her. If she's anywhere, she's probably staying with her rich girlfriend."

Your mind flashes back to the other girl in the picture on the door to Kirika's room. "Come again?"

"Oh, don't pretend like you don't notice how run-down this place is," Kure's mother remarks, flinging her hand in the direction of the nearest wall to demonstrate the building's dereliction. "I'm well aware that I'm far from the wealthiest person around. So I'm perfectly fine with letting Kirika live with her girlfriend. ... It hurts, rarely being able to see my own daughter, but I'm glad that at least someone who loves her is able to provide her with a good life."

Looking around the apartment, you've come to the conclusion that
[ ] Kure's mother is a stunningly poor mage, and her daughter is only involved in this by chance.

Day 17 Chapter 5
[X] Kure's father is the source of her mage lineage, and the mother has nothing to do with this.
-[X] You should try to track down the father, if you can*
[X] Ask for the identity and residence of Kure's girlfriend
*[X] Ask for the identity and residence of Kure's father

"... It hurts, rarely being able to see my own daughter, but I'm glad that at least someone who loves her is able to provide her with a good life."

Looking around the apartment, you've come to the conclusion that Kure's mother cannot be the source of her mage lineage. No matter how you try to rationalize it, figure it, or explain it away, this is not the home of a mage. You don't see any version of reality where this woman passed on a mage's bloodline to her daughter.

You examine the facts. There are six servants, for a deficit of one master. In addition, there is a gap of several days between when Tomoe and Akemi received their Command Seals, and when Kure did. Whoever is behind this war is obviously struggling to find mages of sufficient quality, and without proof of her abilities you're left to figure that Kure was chosen simply to fill an empty slot. A mother with clearly no aptitude for magecraft couldn't be the source, but there's a chance that her absentee father taught her enough as a child for her to have been worth consideration, even as little more than a placeholder.

Which means that logically, because they were chosen as masters that much sooner, Tomoe and Akemi are much more skilled as mages, with Tomoe possibly even being the ringleader of the Mitakihara masters, unless perhaps one of the other three masters was chosen before even her.

"... That being said, when I allowed Kirika to live with her girlfriend, it was with the understanding that she would continue going to school and not cause trouble for me. To hear that she's been missing class, and for several days now, is really quite bothersome. I think I'm going to have to reconsider her living arrangements if this keeps up."

You have to guess that the white-haired girl in the photograph with Kure is her girlfriend. You saw no silver ring on her finger, so unless the rules were changed midway there's no way she could be a master. But she might still be able to point you in the direction of Kure. "Ah, well, given that this is still part of my investigation, perhaps you could tell me where I might find her? Perhaps something's happened and she knows why your daughter has been missing class."

Kure's mother gets up, rifling through the counter-top drawers as she says "We were both that age, once, ma'am. I think we can guess why my daughter hasn't been attending class. Ah! Found it!" Kure's mother produces a pad of paper, onto which she scrawls an address. Tearing the slip from the rest of the pad, she hands it to you. "But, just so you can say you did your job, here's the address. Mikuni Oriko's her name; she lives out by the border of Mitakihara and Shirome. Big, fancy mansion, can't miss it."

You take the slip of paper, glance at the address for a moment, and then fold it up and place it in your pocket. "Thank you. Hopefully I'll be able to get to the bottom of things."

Kure's mother sees you to the door, when a thought strikes you. If you are correct about Kure's father, then perhaps it might be fitting to check in on him as well. "I recognize that this is a long shot, but I would still like to ask where I might find your ex-husband. I recognize that you have good reason to believe otherwise, but if there's even the slightest chance that he knows something about your daughter's disappearance, then I would be remiss in my duties not to check."

Kure's mother sighs, glaring daggers past you to a man neither of you can see. "We split seven years ago. Last I heard he had moved to Asunaro to be with his lover, but I haven't the slightest idea where he might be now. If Kirika found him on her own, that's not something I'd be aware of."

That doesn't sound very promising. Still, if you decide that checking on the father is worth your time, you'll need "A name- Could you tell me his name in case I need to go looking for him?"

Kure's mother crosses her arms, angrily huffing at the mere thought of the man who betrayed her. "Kohinata Kazuma," she replies. "I never took his last name when we married."

"I see. Well, thank you anyway for your time, Kure-san." Not that you'll remember any of this in an hour.

You leave the apartment complex with the vague sensation that you're being followed, a sensation you first felt only after utilizing your magecraft, though who might be following you you couldn't say. You made sure to leave no trace of your visit in the minds of any witnesses, and as far as you could tell there were no mages residing in that building. A familiar, perhaps? Is someone watching you? But who?

Do you
[ ] Check out Mikuni Oriko's residence before heading to investigate the church
[ ] Save investigating Mikuni Oriko's residence for another day, and check out the church now

Day 17 Chapter 6
[X] Check out Mikuni Oriko's residence before heading to investigate the church

You want to at least make time to check out the abandoned Sakura Church before calling it a day. It would be a good place for a Master to lay low at without arousing suspicion, so it's as good a place as any to check out. You might even find your missing master, or one of the other three if you're lucky. But, checking your map against the address given to you by Kure Minako reveals that it would actually make more sense to investigate Mikuni Oriko first. It's barely a kilometer away, and its located in such a way that you'd be able to take the train back into Mitakihara, and then over the bridge into Kazamino.

Yes, that sounds like a good plan.

Kure Minako was right when she said that you "can't miss it", when it takes up the entire block all by itself. You aren't sure just how rich Mikuni Oriko is, but her mansion is easily the size of the Tohsaka residence. Standing tall above a fence of brick and wrought iron, the western-style structure exudes the kind of wealth and prestige that would be right at home among some of the longest-lived mage families at the Clocktower. You wonder just who its owner really is, or what she's doing dating an apparent ruffian like Kure Kirika. Perhaps that's something you should look into. It might be helpful to know more about the allies of each of your masters.

But that's not all. Much like the highrise residence of Tomoe, this mansion has a Bounded Field of some quality surrounding it. It's actually rather impressive how, despite the gaping hole in the fence that invites a direct view of a rose garden in the process of some pretty severe landscaping work, no one seems to want to bother trying to gain entry. You seem to be the only one who even notices it, judging by the nonchalant reactions of passersbys.

[ ] Kure Kirika has a Caster servant with a great rank in Territory Creation
[ ] Kure Kirika is a better mage than you gave her credit for; maybe she's not a placeholder
[ ] Mikuni Oriko is a skilled mage, though not a member of Kure's order
-[ ] Could Mikuni Oriko still be a master despite not being in that order?
--[ ] If yes, is this Bounded Field the work of her, or of her servant?
[ ] Other (write-in)

At any rate, should you attempt to gain entry now, it would be troublesome if the wrong pair of eyes were to spy your actions. Seeing no immediate signs of life, save for the bushy white tail of a stray cat as it saunters away from the boundary, you decide to turn around and head back into town to check out the abandoned church.

Or at least, that's what you would do if the train bridge weren't closed for repairs - That's right, Archer and Berserker had been fighting here a few nights ago - Instead, you're forced to get off at the stop near the school and leg it the rest of the way. Fortunately, there is a footbridge not too far from the school that you can use, otherwise you might have had to swim across. You cut through the woods that flank either side of the train tracks, and as you leave the treeline, there it is.

It really is a damn sorry sight. Windows are busted, the outer walls blackened with soot, hell, even part of the roof's caved in. And yet, you can still sense something faint here. Maybe it's just the flow of this city's leylines, but you'd wager a pint or two that someone's been making camp here, and recently at that. Now, there's trespassing, and then there's trespassing. Both will get you in the same trouble, but only one will get you in trouble. So unlike the Tomoe, Akemi, or Mikuni residences, you're feeling a bit more confident about your odds inside the old church.

The doors aren't locked, and once you've entered, you see just how right you were. Discarded candy wrappers can be seen scattered about the first few rows of seats, much of the broken glass and debris you would expect to see have been swept off to the sides, and the dust isn't quite so thick in some places as in others. In fact, as you run a finger across one of the frontmost seats, you realize that some places don't even have dust.

There are a few distinct sets of footprints that you can make out against the dusty floor. Judging by their size and the lengths of their stride, four females and two taller males have been here within the past week or two, with varying degrees of ambulance based on the way one pair seems to drag their foot. You'd guess that they belong to ( ) and that this is their hideout. But there doesn't seem to be anyone around at the moment.
[ ] The masters and their servants
[ ] A gang of random hoodlums
[ ] Other (write-in)

With the coast clear, you decide to see about checking the basement. Down the dusty stairs, only one set of footprints dares to tread. You reach the bottom, and aren't quite sure what to expect as you come upon a closed door. Hesitantly, head on a swivel, you grasp the handle and jiggle it.

It opens with little complaint into a sparse basement room, charred black like much everything else in the church. A heater, minifridge, and a futon have been set up off in the corner, and by the tracks in the dust these are changes made fairly recently, within the past few weeks or so. There's little else to see of note, save for a curling piece of paper sitting on top of the minifridge. Carefully, you pick it up, finding it to be no more than a black-and-white photograph, weathered by age and marred with the same burns as the rest of the building. It depicts a young girl with braided hair, flanked on either side by figures too burnt to identify.

"Well Ortensia, it looks like there might be some truth to those rumours, after all," you say, placing the photograph back where you found it. "But, if the elder Sakura daughter really is still alive, then what's she doing back here after all this time?"

And, what should you do now that you've found her hideout?

You can hear school bells ringing in the distance, and a quick check of your watch informs you that those are likely the end-of-day bells.

Do you
[ ] Head back to school and try to catch Akemi or Tomoe
-[ ] What do you want to ask them if you can manage?
[ ] Stay here and see if anyone comes by the church
-[ ] What do you do if you are caught?
-[ ] How long do you stay if no one shows up?
[ ] Head to the library and do some digging
-[ ] on Mikuni Oriko
-[ ] on the Sakura family
-[ ] On (write-in who or what you're interested in)

-[ ] What do you do then?

Day 17 Chapter 7
[X] Stay here and see if anyone comes by the church
-[X] Stay out of the Church but linger nearby in a position that would allow observation without being obviously noticed. If a person does come around and they are Sakura Kyoko, and if she has the presence of a Servant and/or a ring on her go to speak with her.
--[X] Wait at most 90 minutes for somebody to show up, leave if there's no one.
--[X] Explain that you were sent to investigate strange happenings in this town and the on the suspicion that the Grail War had started up. Ask about the rings, and how they're cursed; mention that she's spoken with one Akemi Homura about this but she was being annoyingly mysterious about the whole thing. Ask about any unusual class containers she may have encountered, or anything else that's strange about this False Grail War. Ask if she can disclose what Servants have been summoned so far, and what Servant hasn't.

Six pairs of footprints, four female and two male. There's a very good chance that this church is a hideout for at least three of the Mitakihara masters, possibly four depending on the composition of their servants. Given their proximity to the church, you'd guess that Tomoe Mami and Akemi Homura make up two among that number. Having seen her own presumed hideout, you aren't sure if Kure Kirika can be included among the four sets of female footprints. There's no proof that Mikuni Oriko is involved in this War as a master, but by giving refuge to Kure Kirika she's marked herself as being involved all the same. And then there's the elder Sakura daughter. What's her role in all this?

[ ] She's a master just like Tomoe, Akemi, and Kure
[ ] She's involved by way of giving refuge to Tomoe and Akemi, but isn't a master herself
[ ] She's dead, and it's another master using her identity that lives in the basement

At any rate, while it's probably dangerous for you to loiter around inside the church, hanging back some ways in the treeline and watching for any signs of movement should be safe enough.

It takes about a half hour before you hear voices. "Are you sure she'll be here?" the first voice asks. From your position, you're able to identify it as belonging to Tomoe Mami, heading in the direction of the church along with Akemi Homura.

"Based on what Mikuni Oriko told me, as well as the subject of our own conversation, I'm quite positive that she'll be heading here at some point."

"Are you sure you can trust Mikuni-san's word?"

"Her sudden willingness to cooperate is discomforting, but thus far she has proven herself reliable. I'm not sure how I feel about working with her, but I see nothing wrong with utilizing her cooperation for as long as she is willing to give it."

"You perplex me, Akemi-san. You claim to hate and distrust her, and I cannot say that I fault you for feeling that way; yet you hold clandestine meetings with her and ask-" Akemi holds up her hand, cutting Tomoe off mid-sentence.

"We're being watched," she says, combing through the treeline with that cold gaze of hers. "You can come out now, McRemitz-san."

"We meet again, Akemi Homura," you say, brushing a wayward leaf from your shoulder as you emerge from the treeline. Looking to her blonde partner, you add "And you must be Tomoe Mami." Tomoe nods. "How did you know I was here?"

Akemi's eyes meet yours as she says "I received word from Mikuni Oriko that she had seen a foreigner matching your description snooping around her mansion. Given the subject of our own conversation, it was easy enough to guess that you would probably be heading here at some point."

So your guess about this church's involvement in the War was correct. "You're a smart kid," you say. Akemi makes no response. "I suppose you just got lucky, then, in coming here at the same time that I did."

It looks like Akemi is about to answer, but Tomoe beats her to the punch. "Actually, I just came to retrieve Sakura-san's things. Akemi-san came along because she was worried about me."

"I've already informed Akemi that I have no intention of interfering with either her or the other masters unless absolutely necessary. I just want to ask you a few questions is all, if you don't mind." Your words take a few kilos off of Tomoe's shoulders, but Akemi remains unconvinced. Briefly, you spot a glimpse of Tomoe's Command Seals - a five-petaled flower shaped very much like her hairpins - before she catches you staring and covers them with her other hand.

"Well, I suppose that wouldn't be a problem..." Tomoe falters as she comes up blank on your name.

"McRemitz."

"Right, McRemitz-san. Anyway, what is it you need to ask me?"

"Can I assume that Akemi has told you at least the basics about my mission in this city?" Tomoe nods. "Good; then I can skip the introductions. First, if you could, tell me about those rings that each of the masters at your school have. I tried asking your partner but she was being rather secretive about the whole thing. She offhandedly mentioned they were cursed; can you tell me about more about what she meant?"

There's a silence of a few seconds as Akemi's stare bores a hole through Tomoe's head, almost as if they're having a conversation you can't hear. "I'm sorry, McRemitz-san, but Akemi-san is my friend, and I trust her judgement. If she feels the need to withhold information from you, then I suspect she has a good reason for doing so."

"I see." You sigh in defeat, crossing your arms over your chest. "Alright then, perhaps you can tell me about this War's servants. How many have been summoned so far?"

"Six." The same response that Akemi gave.

"Are there any special classes among them, or any other oddities you might be aware of?"

"Well, I'm not sure what you mean by "special classes", McRemitz-san, but based on my understanding of this whole affair, I might say that it's out of the ordinary for Assassin to be able to support themselves without a master."

Really now? The Assassin servant lacks a master? Then that means there are only five masters, and not six. "That's not something that Akemi informed me of. What else can you tell me about Assassin?"

"Not much, most of what I know comes secondhand from Akemi-san and Archer."

"And what might that be?" you ask, as your eyes turn to Akemi. "Any bit of information is helpful to me."

"Assassin is a serial killer who feeds on the mana of her victims to stay corporeal," Akemi responds. "Trying to seek her out for questioning would be a fool's errand, McRemitz-san, as I doubt she is capable of holding a civilized conversation for any length of time."

Somehow, it seems that it always comes down to that, though you're surprised that it would be Assassin, and not Caster, performing that role. Records of the Fourth and Fifth Holy Grail Wars by Lord El-Melloi II and Rin Tohsaka didn't prepare you for this.
[ ] You'll have to be careful when trying to observe Assassin in the future
[ ] You'll have to gather information about Assassin through other means
[ ] "Then I'll just make sure to punch my way out if I ever run into her."

"What about the regular servants of the war. I'm already aware of Archer, Berserker, and Assassin. Perhaps you'd be willing to help put names to faces, or tell me who else has been summoned?"

Your guess about Tomoe being the ringleader might have been wrong, if her frequent deference to Akemi is any indication. "I don't believe that it's my place to tell you about someone else's servant, McRemitz-san, but I can tell you that my own servant is Caster."

Archer, Berserker, Assassin, and now Caster. That still leaves Saber, Lancer, and Rider up in the air between your two remaining masters. You smile as you feel your earrings grow heavy; perhaps there's still a chance after all. "Thank you for the information. You've been more of a help than you realize."

"Then perhaps you might be able to help us in return, McRemitz-san," Akemi responds. "Who are you, and what reason do any of us have to trust you or your intentions?"

"I thought I had already told you. My name is Bazett Fraga McRemitz. I was called in to investigate whether or not a Holy Grail War had been started up in this city."

"My trust in your cohort is already strained, McRemitz-san," Akemi says. My cohort? Does she mean Ortensia? If it were possible for your thoughts to scoff, they would. As if. "As well, if you were seen investigating the residence of Mikuni Oriko and Kure Kirika and are also investigating here, then I have no reason to believe that you have not also investigated the residences of Tomoe-san and myself as well. Archer warned me to be cautious of the wrong people getting wind of things in this city, McRemitz-san, and as of right now I very strongly suspect you of being the wrong person."

"You're a cheeky kid, talking back to your elders like that."

"And yet you still haven't given my master a reason to trust you, Bazett Fraga McRemitz." No way... A familiar voice fills your ears, and your mind races back six years as the servant of Akemi Homura materializes. "Perhaps you should work on rectifying that before commenting on her cheek."

Day 17 Chapter 8
[X] Be surprised at Archer's appearance here; exclaim that he was the Archer Servant in both the Fifth Holy Grail War and the Hollow Grail War and ask him why he's here and not with Tohsaka Rin as he should be. Explain that she's here primarily to see if the Masters here posed a threat to the Mages Association and that she will not interfere otherwise. Be prepared to fight your way out, prepping your gloves just in case. Interrogate Akemi Homura, asking how she came into having control over a Servant of a apprentice of the Wizard Marshall of the Mages Association, and if she stole Archer from Tohsaka Rin.
-[X] Ask all involved, most especially Archer, if this gathering of servants and masters is something other than a grail war like Akemi explained. If so, ask what exactly is going on.
-[X] Ask for more details of Assassin, as she poses a threat to the Mages Association. Depending on how Akemi Homura and Archer answered her previous questions, propose cooperation in eliminating Assassin before she gets too out of hand.

Your mind races back six years as the servant of Akemi Homura materializes. "Perhaps you should work on rectifying that before commenting on her cheek. In fact, why don't you start by telling us who you really are?"

You've never met him - at least, not in person - but the image painted by Tohsaka Rin of her crimson Archer is of a servant she wouldn't have given up without a fight. And, being who she is, being the stellar mage she is, you can't imagine that it would have been an easy fight. Whoever she is, Akemi Homura must be an incredibly dangerous mage.

"I have no idea what you mean by that, Archer," you say, as your muscles tense and the adrenaline courses through your veins. "I am exactly who I say I am. But perhaps you can tell me what's going on here. What's the servant of Tohsaka Rin doing in the hands of some unknown mage from a secret order? Who is she, and how did she manage to steal you from your rightful master?"

"I don't know how you know who I am, but I know exactly who you aren't," Archer responds. "Bazett Fraga McRemitz was killed seven years ago, at the start of the Fifth Holy Grail War. Perhaps the next time you try to steal the identity of an Enforcer, you'll remember to pick one that isn't dead."

"Clearly I can't be too dead, if I'm standing right here." Archer's hand twitches, Projecting a short sword into his grasp. You can feel your fight response kicking in. "But let's say that you're right, and I'm not who I say I am. Clearly, your own master isn't quite who she says she is, either." Both Archer and Akemi stare at you in confusion. "Tohsaka Rin was the apprentice of the Wizard Marshal himself. I doubt someone like her would have just given up her servant without a fight. Whoever your new master is, she's clearly not giving you the whole picture if you're this willing to defend her."

"But that's okay, because I'm going to get some answers out of her, one way or another."

In less than a second, Akemi is gone, vanishing from your sight in the time it takes you to blink as your mind registers her disappearance. Your body goes still as you feel the barrel of a gun pressed against the base of your skull. At this distance, there can be no room for error in your movement if you want to survive the next few seconds. "Enforcer." Akemi says. "Wizard Marshal. Association. These words have no meaning to me, and in the next five seconds neither will your life if you cannot provide me with the answers I seek."

"What was that? Teleportation? No... Innate time control? Just who are you, Akemi Homura?"

"Four."

Against any other opponent - even against a servant - you would have been absolutely confident in your ability to escape this situation. But you're apparently dealing with the reincarnation of the Mage Killer. You were prepared to fight a duel of mages, not of guns. You hate to admit it, but compliance might be your best option right now. "I already told you. My name is Bazett Fraga McRemitz. I was sent here to investigate the possibility of another Grail War starting up in this city."

"By whom? Who sent you? Was it Nurse Ortensia? Or was it this "Association" you spoke of?"

You nod your head, taking even the brief moments when your head is no longer touching the barrel of Akemi's gun as a small victory. "The Mage's Association is an international organization formed for the purpose of controlling, concealing, and developing magecraft away from the eyes of the public. I'm an Enforcer, a combat mage employed by the Association. I was brought in to investigate whether any of the masters might pose a threat to the Association, and to make sure that if this was a Grail War, that it didn't run the risk of exposing our secrets to the normal world."

"In other words, master, they're the wrong people I warned you about. If the Mage's Association has decided to get involved, then you and the other masters are in a lot more trouble than I gave you credit for." You really wish Archer hadn't said that at a time like this. You'd really like to go one Grail War without suffering grievous bodily injury.

Thankfully, Akemi goes right along to her next point of contention without ever so much as acknowledging Archer's comment. "You mentioned Tohsaka Rin. Who is she to you, and who is this "Wizard Marshal" you mentioned?"

"Tohsaka Rin was one of the masters of the Fifth Holy Grail War, with her servant being the very same Archer that you now command. Wizard Marshal Zelretch is an exceptionally powerful magician among the Clocktower, the academic branch of the Mage's Association. Tohsaka Rin is his apprentice. Or was, I suppose, as I can't imagine a situation where she would have handed Archer over to you willingly. Did you kill her with a bullet to the skull, too?"

"She's telling the truth," Archer says to Akemi, nodding in time to your words. "But you're still way off the mark in your assumption that my current master killed my previous one. I'm still a little vague on why I'm here, but I'm fairly confident that it's not because anyone killed Rin."

Well, that's certainly interesting. "You don't know why you're here?" you ask, to which Archer replies with a shake of his head. But, if not because it's a Grail War, then why else would he be here? "I take it Akemi was telling me the truth when she said that what was going on was some shade of War other than a Grail War. Do you know what else it might be?"

"I have a vague idea of what my goal is, but nothing concrete, and no idea why anyone else would have shown up. Frankly, this whole thing is just plain mysterious, up to and including a dead Enforcer suddenly being not dead after seven years."

Well, this has been a gross embarrassment for you. You had planned on interrogating them, but somehow Akemi turned out to be the reincarnation of the Mage Killer and you ended up being interrogated instead. Still, you breathe easy as you feel Akemi withdraw her firearm from its place at the back of your head. "Then, you believe me?"

"I'm not really sure what to believe right now. But if even half of what you've said is the truth, then my master is doing this city no favours by killing you."

"And likewise, helping make my mission easier might earn your master brownie points with the Association, if I put in a good word for her." You don't like that look Archer is giving you, but you're more concerned with Akemi's sudden change in attire. There's no way she would have been able to conceal an entire second outfit underneath her school uniform, so where did it come from? Where did her silver ring go? And what is that amethyst jewel on the back of her hand, and why is it shaped like her Command Seals?

But more importantly, do you
[ ] Offer to cooperate in eliminating Assassin
-[ ] What are the terms of your cooperation?
[ ] Eliminate Akemi, Archer, and Tomoe now that their guards are down
[ ] Other (write-in)
?

I'm disappointed by how this post turned out, but it's not because of the quality of the writing. I was conflicted about whether I should have kept it the full length, or whether I should have cut it off sooner to allow you guys the decision to fight it out or keep talking.

If you guys ever feel like you'd prefer greater player agency over longer posts, let me know so I can rectify things.
