Asking the Right Questions (Part Four)
All right, that's the end of yet another month.

Asking the Right Questions (Part Four)
Telepathically, you pour these words into his mind: 'I need you to tell me everything you know about Melphior's cultists in this city.'

He pauses, grimaces and says, "And why would I do that for you?"

'Aren't they your enemies? Wouldn't it benefit you to curb their power and influence?'

"Rivals, maybe. We're not enemies. At least, not necessarily. Deliberately antagonizing them would be much more trouble than it's worth. Really, I have nothing to gain from doing so." He shrugs his shoulders. "Unless, hmm… What do you have to offer me in exchange?"
"Perhaps we should speak privately," you say, forming an arcane symbol with one hand and casting a spell very much like the one Sir Jacquelyne Bruyner used when you visited her last month; your mother taught you her own version of the spell. "My adopted sister is Bellona Kachalskey, the Chosen of Teryn. As one of the world's greatest necromancers, she knows more about curses and the soul than anyone else I could name. If you agree to help us, I'm sure she would be willing to try to remove the curse your father has used to enslave you."

You glimpse a flash of genuine anger in Simony's eyes and on his face, just for a moment, before he plasters over it with his usual smarmy grin. "Oh? Someone's been telling tales," he says, with a mirthless chuckle. "So… you think you know everything there is to know about me, is that it? And maybe you're right. You have me at a disadvantage."

"Do you want the curse lifted or not?" you ask, frowning.

"Oh, very much. But, in this instance, my desires matter very little. You see, I…" He puts on a peculiar quizzical expression, almost as if he is sucking his mouth to one side. "Of course, you must know that my father traded his thousand-year-old family name for the power and influence offered to him by the Demon Lord Achamat."

You nod. "The one you worship."

"I bought my way into his priesthood," says Simony, without shame. "It provides me with a measure of protection from my father's machinations." He takes a deep breath. "Anyway… because he didn't realise that signing a mystical deal with demon lord would have unpleasant side effects, my father feels as if he was cheated. And so, ever since then, he has tried to wriggle out of it, firstly by paying an assortment of quacks and hedge wizards to give him a new 'true name' – yeah, he keeps doing that, no matter how often it doesn't work, like someone suffering from a gambling addiction – and he's tried various other schemes, each one more ridiculous than the last. You might think Achamat would be offended by his perfidy, but you'd be wrong: as the Demon Lord of Good and Bad Luck, he is very fond of high-stakes games and hopeless chancers. I'm sure he is very amused by the whole ridiculous situation."

"What's your point?" you ask.

"I'm not sure my lord Achamat would be happy with anyone interfering in his favourite entertainment. He enjoys watching my father's feeble struggles, the foolish plans to which he has committed and the depths to he will sink, far too much to allow anyone to bring it to an end before he has grown bored of it."

"But we wouldn't necessarily be putting an end to your father's struggles, even if we probably should," you point out. "We'd only be freeing you and your siblings from the curse that binds you to him."

"And do you think he'll give us up easily?" asks Simony, in a cynical tone. "No, I'd be surprised if you didn't have to kill him in the process. Besides, even if you manage to sneak all of us out without him noticing, he'll just find yet another impressionable young woman to bear some more cursed children for him. You wouldn't be solving the problem, just saving it for later, passing it on the next generation. That's why he has to die. Otherwise, it'll never end."

"If we promised you we'd kill him, even if it meant defying your demonic master, would you be willing to help us?" asks Raef, peering shrewdly at him.

"I… maybe," says Simony, almost choking over his words.

"Perhaps a demonstration would be in order," you suggest. "We intend to free your brother, Phil, from the curse. We'll get it done as soon as possible; then, you'll see that we can uphold our end of the bargain."

At that, Simony slowly nods. "I… ah, I should warn you… It's highly likely that my lord Achamat will soon become aware of this conversation if he isn't already. I've no idea what he will do. So, it's possible that I won't be in a position to accept your generous offer or not."

"You don't think he'll relish the chance to strike at one of his rivals?" you ask.

He shakes his head. "Honestly, I don't know. Might as well roll some dice or flip a coin to predict how he'll react."

"Is he really that random?" you ask, raising a sceptical eyebrow.

"Not really. Whatever happens, he'll try to make sure he benefits from it. The house always wins, after all. Still, until then, he finds it useful to cultivate an air of unpredictability."

"Well, thank you for your time. You've been very helpful," you say, somewhat ironically.

"No worries. Good luck with everything," he replies, shifting awkwardly.

Outside, Raef asks, "Where next? Back home?"

"It's a beautiful day," you say, looking around, enjoying the fresh air and mild winter's sunlight. "Let's walk for a bit. Get to know the local area."

"If you say so," she replies, somewhat uneasily.

"You must know this city very well. Unless there have been any major new building developments since you were living here?"

"Um… it looks pretty much the same as it always did."

Slowly, meandering along like a mighty river, you make your way to Tyrepheum's goblin town, to the shrine of Zora Alishanda, and through the portal to Mishrak's undersea palace.

The Aspiti Empire currently has 12 Warscore. Their Warscore increases at a rate of 2 per month (and can be increased by various special events).

The Coalition (of forces leagued against the Aspiti Empire) currently has a total of 13 Warscore. Their Warscore increases at a rate of 1 a month (and can be increased by Elys's actions).

Whichever side gains a total of 54 Warscore first will be the winner of this stage of the war.

From now on, Mishrak will provide the funds Jaqari Pruyte and his team need to build the space gonne, while Raef will assist them by fetching rare minerals (etc.) from faraway places. Because of this, the space gonne will be completed much sooner. However, it's likely that Melphior and his cultists will react badly to this.

Basically, you now have 3 months before things go to hell. Some of the vote options you can choose at the end of each month will extend or shorten this timer.

What do you want Elys to do next month? (Choose one)
[] Go to Mishrak's undersea palace and spend time meeting various representatives of the different groups that make up the Coalition. (+Warscore?)
-[] Ask Sildar and Jorantul how they're getting on.
-[] Meet some of the Wranni.
--[] Be pleasantly surprised to see an old friend.
-[] Talk to some of the Deep Ones.
-[] Meet Red Ruin and a few of the orcs.

[] Sildar and Jorantul want a portal mage to help them with their daring plan to destroy a large part of the undead fleet commanded by the Aspitis. (+Warscore?)
-[] Elys will volunteer for the job.
--[] Samaya doesn't want to attract attention to herself, but if Elys volunteers, she will insist on taking part as well.

[] Join Gareth and Yslena in confronting Lord Gerrod Burntree and finding out if he had anything to do with the Rivayni royal family's recent misfortunes.

[] Get to know some of Jana's friends, third-year pupils at the Engelram Academy.

[] Get to know some of Catharne's new friends, first-year pupils at the Engelram Academy.

[] Arrange a meeting with the high council of the Sisterhood of the Iron Orchid.
-[] Attempt to persuade them to that the remainder of their forces should join in the war against Aspitolm.
--[] Suggest that you can get a lot of new recruits for them (by providing armour and weapons for the wannabe lady knights from the orphanage).

[] Arrange an appointment with Gilles Margreve, the playwright responsible for 'Tis Pity She's a Man, the play that has been causing the Sisterhood of the Iron Orchid so much anguish.
-[] Write in: what do you want to do or say to him?

[] Start building up your own sources of wealth and income so you won't have to keep asking Uncle Mishrak for money all the time.
-[] Write in: how?

[] DIPLOMACY MISSION: Visit the Avanni capital, Ontopophis. Present yourself to the God-Empress as an ambassador.
-[] Invite the Avanni to join the war against Aspitolm. (+Warscore?)

[] Go to Norrange and meet her grandfather, Count Lymond Sayce. (+Warscore?)
-[] Visit her uncle, Elward, and his wife, Raene.
--[] Visit her cousin, Jesric.

[] Finish reading Kelamon Dumar's How to Enter the Underworld.

[] Ask Raef how you can free Green Flame from the magical bonds that keep her as a slave.
---[] Attempt to free her. (Warning: this may be extremely difficult and potentially dangerous)

[] Invite Philander to the undersea palace.
--[] Get Bellona to examine his soul and the curses that bind him.

[] Go to Tyrepheum and investigate Humferth Hygmalion. Try to find out what he intends for Isolia.

[] Go to Lyones. Visit the headquarters of the Dream Knights.
-[] Tell them what is going on in Tyrepheum.
--[] Convince them to help.

[] Get Raef to open a portal to Keshpydar.
-[] Visit the new shrine to Mishrak
--[] Meet with the Night Blades' high command.
---[] Discuss with them what's been going on in Tyrepheum.

[] Tell Sildar and Jorantul about Humferth Hygmalion.
-[] Convince them that killing him would be the right thing to do.
--[] Transport them (via portal magic) to Tyrepheum.
---[] Keep an eye on them. Try to limit the amount of collateral damage.

[] Visit the Headmaster of the Tyrepheum Academy, Opernus Prentigold.
-[] Talk to him about Green Flame.
-[] Tell him that you intend to free her. What is he going to do about it?

[] Go to the Tyrepheum Academy and find Moroth Noorandiun.
-[] Convince him to tell you everything he knows about the Melphior cultists.

[] Go to the Tyrepheum Academy and find the Rayze twins.
-[] Insist that they tell you everything they know about the Melphior cultists.
--[] If they refuse, attempt to capture them so that they can be interrogated.

[] Do something else (write in)*.
*If there's anything I've forgotten to add to this list, that doesn't mean that you can't do it. Also, it may be possible to combine some of the vote options above.

Also, Elys's thirteenth birthday is coming up next month, bless her. :)

Well, I didn't think it would be that easy, but I hoped.

If we've said that we'll free Phil as soon as possible so that Simony can see that we're trustworthy, then we should do that and prepare to deal with the fallout.

We have 3 months until the gonne is ready, which would give us 1 month to free Phil (and maybe his siblings), 1 month to contact Simony and/or take out his father, and 1 month to act on any intelligence we get. If Achamat is fond of high stakes games, then maybe he'll appreciate Simony gambling like this in an attempt to get free of his father, since he'll still be working for Achamat either way.

If it doesn't work out, we could try spending on action bringing in more Night Blades.

[X] Invite Philander to the undersea palace.
--[X] Get Bellona to examine his soul and the curses that bind him.

Well that was an awkward conversation XD

Quick aside, why would we tell Opernus Prentigold we plan to free Green Flame?

At that, Simony slowly nods. "I… ah, I should warn you… It's highly likely that my lord Achamat will soon become aware of this conversation if he isn't already. I've no idea how he will do. So, it's possible that I won't be in a position to accept your generous offer or not."
If Simony is free he is... still a member of the priesthood of Achamat, so I think it'd make sense for Achamat to just... let it ride. Let Sinna sweat as his backup plans crumble.
Ooo, liked this moment a lot.

Uh oh, teenager alert.

It's any good QM's prerogative to offer options both good and bad. Also, it's funny to imagine.

[x] Ask Raef how you can free Green Flame from the magical bonds that keep her as a slave.
---[x] Attempt to free her. (Warning: this may be extremely difficult and potentially dangerous)
---[x] Bring Mishrak, Galadan the Mystic, Samaya, and Red Ruin to assist in the attempt
---[x] Use the fact that Galadan the Mystic was never removed from office to bypass Green Flame's forced defense of the seal

And then she can do as she pleases! Then next month I think we talk to Phil.

@Chandagnac
Can we try to combine saving Green Flame and Philander or should those remain seperate arcs?
(Example of a possible outline: meet Green Flame & studends privately, open portal to undersea palace, Galadan the Mystic comes through it and uses the fact that he was never removed from office, "field trip" to the undersea palace, order Green Flame to let Mishrak work on the magic binding her (to remove it); meanwhile Philander gets checked by Bellona)

I miss seeing scenes of Elys' daily life, she's theoretically at school in between these arcs, but we never see any of it, and the only progress we've seen in her skills are things she takes arc actions towards like portal magic and diplomacy. Surely she isn't being sent to daycare to idle away her days in a dreamless stupor.

[X] Invite Philander to the undersea palace.
--[X] Get Bellona to examine his soul and the curses that bind him.

B/n the two options floated so far I prefer this one. But in truth I would prefer Warscore or gonne related actions. Lyones seems the best to me. If possible I'd like to approval vote it.

[X] Go to Lyones. Visit the headquarters of the Dream Knights.
-[X] Tell them what is going on in Tyrepheum.
--[X] Convince them to help.

Freeing Green Flame should probably come last, if Elys insists on spending so much of her time on unfortunate-but-stable friends instead of the high stakes war and intrigue she is embroiled in. GF's the only one who is 'valuable' to the academy, the rest are just students, and I worry that freeing her will invite getting banned or sanctioned or what have you.

Warscore is at 12 to 13 with 2 autogain to 1 autogain.
Tyrepheum is 3 turns to escalation by the cultists.

Warscore can be delayed a bit. Tyrepheum is urgent.

Besides doing the right thing, which imho is a strong argument by itself:
Green Flame was made by a god to be a weapon.
A free Green Flame in the general vicinity of the space gonne project could be a huge asset in its defense.

We have 3 months until the gonne is ready
Actually, the gonne won't be completed in three months, but it will get so close to completion that Melphior and his cultists will panic and do something drastic (which Elys will have to thwart).

It's any good QM's prerogative to offer options both good and bad. Also, it's funny to imagine.
Indeed.

Can we try to combine saving Green Flame and Philander or should those remain seperate arcs?
I'd prefer it if they stayed as separate story arcs. Otherwise, things are likely to get complicated.

Hmm. Before the next story arc, maybe I could include a short section focusing on Elys's birthday and her time at boarding school.

I think that would be fun! Just a little bit for flavor, you know? I will admit, though we are in a journey of a thousand steps, perhaps we could afford a little lead-in on new arcs for the more ordinary days? Nothing that would require Big Decisions Voting kinda stuff just like... little bits.

Happy Birthday, Elys! (Part One)
Before the next major story arc, here's a fun little interlude.

*

Happy Birthday, Elys! (Part One)
Since you enrolled at the Engelram Academy of the Magical Arts, you haven't settled in, made new friends, or accepted the school's many rules and regulations as anything other than inconvenient suggestions. Jana and Catharne are your closest friends – that hasn't changed – but you have made no attempt to befriend any of the other pupils you share classes with. So, is it any wonder that they all think you're stuck-up? You've hardly given them any reason to think otherwise.

Nevertheless, your time at school hasn't been entirely worthless. Studying mathematics and magical theory has helped you to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of your magical powers. Although you have more raw power than most of your teachers, they have much to teach you. In time, you hope to learn from them how to use your powers with far more skill, precision and efficiency than you currently possess. You've made a good start already.

Part of the problem is that you have so many other more important things to worry about. It's hard to care about schoolwork and teenage drama while you're trying to save Quellonia from the threat of Aspiti invasion, or the goblins of Tyrepheum from being murdered by Melphior's cultists, or all of humanity from the Demon Lords' vile schemes. Also, with your Mastery of Portals, you can leave the Academy any time you like – to spend time with your parents, with Mishrak, or with your various ongoing projects and pastimes – and the teaching staff have, by now, given up trying to stop you.

You feel closer to Green Flame than any of the teachers at the Engelram Academy, with the exception of Raef, your own personal tutor, whom you brought in from outside and who doesn't teach any of the other pupils. You've found it easier to make friends with Dorian and the other members of Cadre 1F than with the pupils at your own school. Even after all this time, you're still an outsider. It's mostly your own fault. Of that, you're well aware. Still, you get lonely sometimes.

On your birthday, you are expecting to go home to your parents and spend most of the day with them, so it comes as something of a surprise when Jana ambushes you and drags you into a disused classroom where Catharne and some of her friends are waiting along with a large sponge cake filled with cream and jam.

"Surprise!" cries Jana. "Happy birthday!"

"Well, this is… most unexpected," you say, in a fluster. "Thank you very much."

"How does it feel to be thirteen years old?" asks Catharne. "I wouldn't know: I've never been thirteen."

"I feel much the same as I did yesterday," you reply, truthfully. "Thank you for asking."

"Oh," says Catharne. She looks slightly disappointed.

Then, looking around at the young teenage girls you don't know or can't remember meeting before, you hold out your hand and say, "I'm very pleased to meet you."

"I've been in your maths class for the whole of the last year," says a dumpy young woman with frizzy hair, looking irritated.

"Assume I wasn't paying attention," you say. "And you are…?"

"Chantilly Poverett," she replies, with a huff of impatience.

"She helped me bake this for you," says Jana, indicating the large sponge cake.

"Thank you very much," you say, not knowing what else to say.

Over the next half hour, after the cake has been divided up into generous slices and then shared between you all, you get to know some of the other girls you regularly share classes with but have never taken much notice of before. Their names are Ephriduta Iswe, Tassin Tayde, Clarys Sennabar and Opona Damsell.

Ephriduta is very dark-skinned, much more so than most Quellonians. Her long black hair is intricately woven together in rope-like strands. Her parents originally came from Songaraya, a land far to the south, which you have never even heard of before. They were captured and taken to Aspitolm to be sold, but managed to escape. Fearing that if they returned to their homeland they would once again be preyed upon by slavers, they resolved to make a new life for themselves in Quellonia. Evidently, they are doing well for themselves.

Tassin is relatively tall and athletic for her age. Her hair is cut boyishly short, even shorter than Jana's. She seems rather uncomfortable in your presence, possibly because she doesn't know you very well.

Clarys has classically aristocratic features, like those you might see on an ancient statue. Maybe that's because, a few generations ago, her family was made up of dispossessed nobles from the Aspiti Empire who fled across the border into Quellonia. Since then, they have become successful merchants.

Opona is quite possibly the most 'girly' girl you have ever met, at least judging by her appearance. She is overly fond of lace, ruffles and soft pastel colours. Her brunette hair is elaborately coiffed and twined with ribbons. There is a gratingly shrill, sweet and giggly quality to her voice. Having seen the rest of her, you'd expect her face to be heavily made-up, but instead it is almost aggressively plain, as if she's trying to use it to make some kind of artistic statement. However, you're not sure what, if anything, it is meant to signify.

Meanwhile, Jana and Catharne stay in the background, eating cake and listening in. You can sense the tension in them both. They want you to enjoy this birthday celebration, so they've made a special effort. But how do you feel about that?

Because of her hard work at school, Elys has gained another 2xp. She now has a total of 8xp. needs 9xp to reach Rank 4.

The fact that none of the recent chapters have made much mention of Elys's time at school could be seen as a deliberate stylistic choice, meant to show her detachment and lack of engagement with the Engelram Academy. At least, that's my explanation and I'm sticking to it.

Well? What do you want Elys to say or do?

Oh my gosh this spring boarded between incredibly wholesome and incredibly awkward the whole time XD

Anyway I think Elys would have enjoyed this, largely because of the sentiment, but also cos hey, part; just with some awkward realizations about her social situation hanging in the background.

You will probably want to fix the spoiler format in this part.

As for the situation... Well, it's not at all strange that the war and some other things captured Elys' attention to the point where she almost didn't pay attention to everything else. So yes, very awkward.

lol that's cute
I am satisfied
my guess is that opona's intended statement is 'I am very beautiful and don't need makeup' or something along that line, but it's quite a tenuous guess.

I think it'd be good for Elys to thank these girls for attending the party, despite her detachment, and possibly also thank them for looking past said detachment. Not say sorry, because that just makes them feel awkward, rather than put the focus on their own kindness. they probably deserve some more of Elys' attention in the future, for that consideration.
uhhhhhhhhhh not sure what else they could say or talk about or do, but perhaps if any of them know any simple games to share, then at the very least the discussion of what sort of game to play will tell us more about them as people.

Yeah, I don't blame her for having trouble making friends at school when she has so much life and death stuff she's involved in, but maybe it's something she should make a note to talk to mom and dad about? Running and island nation means remembering a lot of names and faces, even if you don't interact with them a lot, and it's clear that this is something negatively affecting her relationship with her peers. Maybe she should pitch it as something related to her diplomacy training?

Thank them for coming, share cake and try to spark up conversations. Maybe cheat by telepathically asking her friends for tips.

Just need to be carefull on how to word it, she is this involved because she wants to help with the situations, if her parents decide that she is too involved and that she needs more time spend in having a normal childhood that would probably be incredibly frustrating to her

"You're too busy gallivanting about on globe-trotting adventures that you can't be bothered to remember the little people, huh?"
"I'm not sure I'd call it gallivanting per se"

"How does it feel to be thirteen years old?" asks Catharne. "I wouldn't know: I've never been thirteen."
Yet, dear Catharne, yet!

I think Elys should thank everyone for coming to her party and then maybe do a magic trick?

Oh my gosh this spring boarded between incredibly wholesome and incredibly awkward the whole time XD
Exactly what I was going for. Thank you.

You will probably want to fix the spoiler format in this part.
Indeed. That 'spoiler' was an unfortunate casualty of my attempts to reorganize and reformat this latest update before posting it.

Hmm. I'll try to think of some games they could play.

We really need to remember Janas and Catharnes birthdays.
Actually...

Jana doesn't know when her real birthday is, but she knows she's about a year older than Elys (give or take a few months), so she shares Elys's birthday as if it was her own.

Catharne was given to Elys as an egg (which then hatched) on Elys's fifth birthday. So her birthday really is the same as Elys's.

That's something that should definitely be mentioned in the next update: Jana and Catharne have gone to all this trouble to make sure Elys has fun on her birthday, but it's their birthday as well.

Huh, so misremembered both of them.
...
Please tell me Elys remembered it is their birthdays too.

We should make an effort to make Jana and Catharne part of the Celebration, too.

Besides that, agreeing with @tricholysisand @Flashkannon.

If next post includes post party: thank Jana and Catharne, and see what they would like to do for the shared birthday. They have been in our adventures so often, we should also try to be in theirs!

Happy Birthday, Elys! (Part Two)
With that knowledge, we definitely gotta wrap both other birthday girls in a hug and thank everyone for coming to all of their birthdays.
I'll save that for the end of the scene.

You call Jana and Catharne to one side and ask to speak to them in private. "Today's both of your birthdays as well," you point out, in a whisper, when you're fairly sure you won't be overheard. "Why are you making this all about me?"

"My birthday's never meant much to me," says Jana. "Your parents would always get me a gift, but other than that…" She shrugs indifferently. "Anyway, I don't know when my real birthday is. Back when I was born, my mother wasn't keeping track of the days, so… Um, I just need a rough idea of how old I am, so I measure it from when your birthday is. But it's still your special day!"

"I don't think dragons celebrate birthdays in the same way humans do," says Catharne, looking thoughtful. "My father never seemed to think they were important. And anyway, I already have everything I need. When it's your birthday, the food's always great – and I get to share it. That's what really matters."

At this point, you really hope the other girls aren't listening in; they might get some very strange ideas about you, your sisters and your shared history.

"Besides, you've been working very hard recently," says Jana. "You need to let your hair down and have fun."

"We'll help you with that," Catharne adds.

"I want you to have fun as well," you say. "So… do you know any games we could play?"

Jana glances over at the other girls. "I'm sure we can think of something together."

And so, you go on to play charades, a game in which someone has to mime something from a certain topic while everyone else has to guess what it is. The first topic is 'animals'. Jana collapses in hysterics while you perform your impression of a snail, though afterwards she insists that she was "laughing with you, not at you."

Later, you play 'Name the Tune', which you find exceedingly difficult because you aren't familiar with the music that makes your classmates say, "Oh, that's obvious!" It would appear that popular culture has passed you by completely.

Tiring of your cluelessness, Tassin Tayde takes out a weighty deck of cards and says, "You know how to play Fates?"

"No," you admit.

She nods. "Yeah, I figured that. Don't worry, I'll explain."

Apparently, the Fates deck consists of five suits (coins, leaves, skulls, swords and stars), each with ten 'pip' cards (ace to ten) and four 'face' cards (page, knight, queen and king). There are twenty-eight 'trump' cards as well as 'the Fool', which is considered to be a 'wild' card, for a total of ninety-nine cards. No wonder the stack of cards in Tassin's hand looks so large!

"It sounds complicated," you say, somewhat apprehensively.

"There are a lot of games you can play with it," says Tassin. "Not all of them use the full deck."

"Also, it's quite often used for fortune telling," says Jana. "You're good at that, aren't you?"

Tassin shrugs her wiry shoulders. "Not bad."

"Ooh! Do me!" cries Catharne. "Tell my fortune!"

"Yeah, all right," says Tassin, after a moment's pause. "Might as well give it a go."

She repeatedly shuffles the cards in her hands, randomising them as much as possible, before placing five of them face down on the table next to the partially demolished cake.

"The first card represents your past and where you came from," she says, before turning it over. It depicts a bearded giant trudging onwards through the ocean, with water up to his knees, clutching a bulging net that appears to be stuffed full of fish, sea monsters, and the remains of shipwrecks. "Ah. The Wading God. It represents the deep sea and all that dwells within it. That's where you came from."

"Yeah, we knew that," says Jana, loudly. "We all came from the same island, Catharne, Elys and I."

"The next card represents your present, where you are now," says Tassin, turning it over. It appears to depict a wily thief running away with several large bags of money. "The Seven of Coins. It represents wealth and success."

"Also, it can be interpreted as meaning 'greed' and 'gluttony'," says Opona, in her sugary-sweet voice.

"I have been known to overindulge," says Catharne, seemingly unruffled.

"The suit of Coins represents the material world and physical reality: everything we can see, taste, smell and touch," Tassin explains. "Your enjoyment of such is no bad thing."

Catharne looks contemplative. "Huh…"

Turning over the next card, Tassin says, "In the near future… the Two of Swords." It depicts two men fighting a duel, their blades locked together, neither of them able to gain an advantage over the other. "It can represent balanced forces, a period of peace with tensions running underneath, or the calm before, during or after a storm."

"So… you're saying my life will be peaceful, for a little while, but then something bad is going to happen?" Catharne deduces.

"Or there will be conflict, or violence, or danger," says Tassin.

"Just like in any other life," says Ephriduta, who previously invited you to call her 'Ephri'. She really is a very pretty girl. You can see why Jana likes her.

"Yes, well… sometimes the 'future' we can discern from the cards isn't very precise," Tassin admits.

She turns over the next card. It depicts an elderly man with a long white beard, dressed in stereotypical wizard robes and a pointed hat. However, it is upside down. "The Magician, reversed," says Tassin. "Instead of wisdom and guidance, it represents a charlatan, someone who is not what they appear to be."

"So, I should beware of someone trying to fool me?" Catharne guesses.

"Presumably," says Tassin. Turning over the final card, which appears to depict a fiery conflagration, she says, "Ten of Stars. The rest of your life will be tumultuous indeed, filled with excitement and adventure."

Catharne grins toothily. "That's good, right?"

"If you like that sort of thing." Tassin nods.

"Shall I go next?" asks Jana, with a grin to rival Catharne's.

Everyone else groans. "You always draw skulls," Chantilly complains. "A flush, every single time. I'd suspect you of cheating, if it didn't keep happening in circumstances that would require you to be either the greatest wizard or the greatest confidence trickster who has ever lived. And, yeah, I know you're good, but you're not that good."

"It's because I came so close to death when I was five years old," Jana explains. "By rights, I should be dead right now."

Do you want to ask Tassin to tell Elys's fortune? Or shall we move on?

The Fates deck first appeared way back in A Hedge Maze Is You, but hasn't appeared since then. Until now.

So, Catharne comes from the depth of the sea (Mishrak), has a sweet tooth, her life is calm/peacefull but will become less so (positive: Adventurous, exciting), her future will hold a charlatan/ someone who will try to trick her. Her general future will be adventurous.

The charlatan is the only thing not expected. Assuming we will have her part of the adventures in the space gonne city, that could be our issues with the demon that wants to attack the space gonne.
All assuming that it is more than just a random hobby.

Do you want to ask Tassin to tell Elys's fortune? Or shall we move on?
Yes.

True future telling would contradict freedom to choose ones actions and Telthalus defeating the Fates, but giving it a try can't hurt.
