Can You Feel the Sunshine? (A Sonic the Hedgehog Quest)

it looks like our mystery disadvantage is only worth 5 CP.
... *Blinks*
*Checks Character Sheet*
I am so sorry but it seems I have made a mistake on the character sheet when calculating total character points in that I didn't calculate the disadvantages onto that. It should display the actual total character points now.

Anyways, on the hidden disadvantage, that is currently not calculated on the sheet. Once you discover what it is though, you will gain an amount of points to put to use.

Say guys I absolutely want to train after this because holy shit we're very close to dying sometimes like our time with metal
Pretty much exactly what my math analysis is about. Every one of the pre-built chargen options has +2 each to DX, Brawling, Acrobatics, and Jumping. Since those 3 skills, are DX-based, that means that any of the pre-builts would succeed on those skills on a 14 or less, which means a 90.7% success chance for any of those skills given the probability distribution of 3d6. Meanwhile, our custom-built character sheet has +0 DX, and only +1 each to those 3 skills, so they all succeed on an 11 or less, which is only 62.5% success chance on 3d6. So we fail those checks and our combat to-hit rolls a little more than a third of the time.

Note what rolls we make when clearing stages: Acrobatics and Jumping for obstacles, and combat against minions where we mostly roll Brawling to use our techniques (which, as someone who knows the system, I can confidently say would be amazing and completely OP if we had the Brawling rolls to back them up... too bad we don't). We very rarely use any other skill roll.

Also, if we had Brawling to the +2 level, that is the threshold of competence where knowing Brawling at that level boosts your damage output by +1 per base die, so we would have 1d6-1 damage instead of the 1d6-2 we do now. So all of those times where we only did 1 damage would instead be enough to kill basic mooks, and that "the hit lands but does no damage" thing would happen half as often as it currently does. And we could then utilize our techniques to be completely OP, instead of basically being carried by Honey because she's just flat-out better built for combat than we are.

And what do we get in exchange for that? Where did the extra CP go? Well, we got Climbing and Throwing at +1, which have both been actually useful once each, so that's 8 points that have... shown up in a positive manner?

We got almost no disadvantages, 22 points when the pre-builts all had at least 20 and one of them had 50, so we aren't as crippled by annoying personality traits like Stubborn that we'd be forced to roleplay, and we have a lot of neat advantages, particularly on the social front. I expect the plot of Sonic 3 and Knuckles to go completely differently, since with our Honest Face and Charisma 2 advantages, and our Easy to Read Disadvantage combo-ing into our Selfless and Chummy disadvantages, how we generally roleplay as a nice guy, and our hero title... We basically broadcast "genuinely nice guy" so hard they can practically pick it up from space. Knuckles will probably talk to us for all of 5 seconds before he turns to Eggman with an "are you absolutely sure that he's a bad guy?" And our Empathy advantage would let us pick up on the situation and doubt in nothing flat and clear things up.

Very Fit is an advantage that's literally saved us by boosting our HT rolls to avoid dying or passing out, although we probably wouldn't need it if we were a better fighter and could better dodge obstacles, it's still not as good as actually boosting our HT for only slightly cheaper, and we haven't seen the FP benefits yet because endurance and FP spending and recovery haven't been part of the game yet. Although, I will note that advantages are harder to gain after chargen because they're limited access, and disadvantages are hard to buy off without in-game effort, so going advantage-heavy and disadvantage-light is basically a short-term loss, long-term gain strategy. Perfectly fine as long as we reach the point of being able to spend CP.

What I really don't agree with is buying both Lifting and Breath Control up to the +1 level. They're both pretty much useless, and take up 12 CP that could be used to bring our 3 "core" skills up to the +2 level with 4 CP to spare. Just to tell why they're useless, let's start with Breath Control: If you succeed on the skill roll, you can hold your breath for 50% longer. Ignoring the fact that that's a fairly tame effect even when it works, it also does nothing on a failed roll, and the 11-or-less it succeeds still means it fails over a third of the time. And it's basically only useful on underwater stages, of which we have at most 1 before our first CP buy. A waste of 8 CP.

Then there's Lifting. If you succeed on a roll, it increases your effective Basic Lift for one lift by 5% per point you succeed by. We have 20 pounds of Basic Lift, so we increase it by 1 pound per each point we succeed by. And we succeed on an 11 or less, so the skill won't do anything about a third of the time and won't succeed by more than a few points basically ever. So we have less than a 20% chance of boosting our Basic Lift from 20 pounds to 25 pounds for one attempt at lifting something. Honey's Basic Lift is 24, for comparison. When exactly does anyone see this coming in handy? If we had better basic stats, yeah, this could be potentially useful... but we don't, so this is a waste of 4 CP.

If I had the chance to re-do the chargen vote (that I wasn't around for) to fix it with as little changes as possible, I would get rid of Breath Control and Lifting, use 8 of the 12 freed up CP to boost Brawling, Acrobatics, and Jumping up to +2 level, and split the remaining 4 to put 2 CP each into our 2 techniques to buy them both up to the +2 level so that we still roll a 14 or less to-hit, our damage is fixed, and our Acrobatics and Jumping scores are at least boosted from a 62.5% success chance to a 74.1% success chance, all while being still legal by chargen rules and not changing anything meaningful, since we can always buy those skills later if we still want them. (Technically, putting CP into techniques is less efficient for long-term growth than just buying up DX and Brawling, but we're on emergency patch mode here so who cares?)

Meanwhile, I'm just waiting for the chance to spend CP so I can actually fix our horrible build, because being a version of Sonic who is actually bad at... being Sonic the Hedgehog isn't fun, it's a slog, with a lot of pain, nearly dying to things we should be breezing through, and taking more turns than we should need to to deal with things. And the sooner we can fix that and actually have the skills to back up our ambitions of beating Eggman and being a real hero, the better.

Edit: And that was the math analysis/rant post that's been brewing for a day or two now since I first noticed all of this and did the math, didn't have time to do, but I was goaded and it's far enough past my bedtime that my impulse control is shot, so I spent a bunch of time typing this out instead of getting ready for either prepping my work for tomorrow or bed like I should have. So… goodnight?

Day 27 #3 Down-Time #1
[X] It seems like this'll be the last you'll be able to social Honey before you reach the end of your deal. She explains that through Act 1 of Spring Yard Zone is where you'll find their house, where they promise you to fix you up with some "fashionable clothes that not horrid abominations of nature like the ones you wear". And once you both get through all of Act 1, the bridge will finally come into view, and you'll part ways...
-[X] Well...it seems a better time than any to thank Honey.

[X] Perhaps you want to take some time off to heal?
-[X] No. Go right on to the next day.

Taking in the sights of the city before you, surprisingly enough your thoughts aren't really on that though. But instead on the partner that's been with you through all of Marble Zone. Tomorrow is the day you both finally part and you go straight towards that Egghead. Well, more than just a partner now, she's a friend.

Now... How do you wanna do this?

"Something keeping you up?"

"!" Startled slightly that, you see Honey come up next to you yawning. "Oh. It's nothing."

"Pft. As if. I haven't seen anything be able to keep you up in the slightest since I met you. You do know you sleep in the oddest places right? Now come on, what is it?" She pokes at your chest, prodding you for more information.

Well, if there's any time to say thank you, this is it.

[X] You sigh. "Well...better in than out, I guess. Thank you, Honey," you laugh. "I have so many reasons to thank you that I will need to make a small list."
-[X] "Let's see...saved my ass from those bozos, proceeded to help me cross that damn Marble Zone, fought against Silver Me, heard to my jokes, took care of me when I was utterly wasted, and, last but not least, gave me a pretty badass name. Yeah, and I guess being my first friend capable of talking back. Oh, and you will make some badass gloves and shoes for me, which is very cool."
-[X] "Part of me wished you could keep coming..." you pause. "But I also know that you have things here. A family and all that, I don't really get it. And now that Eggman knows that I have at least one Emerald..." you close your eyes. "All I want to say, it was a nice ride, Honey. If you ever get in trouble, you know who to call."

You sigh. "Well... Better in that out, I guess. Thank you, Honey." A sudden laugh come out of you, as if to hide your own awkwardness in saying this. Her amber eyes stay focused on you, silence flows as she listens. "I have so many reasons to thank you that I'd need a take a small list just to name them all." And with a click to your fingers, you start listing everything off. "I mean, there's the saving my ass from those bozos, then helping me cross through that damn Marble Zone, fighting against that Silver-Me, listening to my jokes, taking care of me when I was all battered up. Oh right, yeah I guess being my first friend capable of talking back-oh and you're gonna be making-" At this point, you're just spattering more and more things to say to her, wanting to get every single possible thing she helped you with, but you cut yourself off as you feel her hand on your shoulder.

She stares and gives a small, warm smile. Though somewhat wavering due to feeling embarrassed, a small blush to her face. "I-I get it, okay? No need to keep going on and on about that. You're overdoing it a bit now."

Oh! Right-uh... Yeah. Still though, "Part of me wished you could keep coming... But I also know that you have things here. A family and all that, not that I really get it. And now thatEggman knows that I have at least one of those Emeralds..." You close your eyes. "All I want to say was that it was a nice ride, Honey. If you ever get in trouble, you know who to ask."

"Don't you mean who to call?" She teases. The tension breaking.

"...you and I both know I have no idea what that means. Was that to ruin the moment?" You smirk back.

She giggles at that. "Hey, it got you back to your more confident easy-going personality. Suits you a hell of a lot more than what you were like just now." Her eyes slowly drift to the city within both of your visions. "Though... Thank you too, Sonic."

After that, the two of you spent some time just looking at the city before you...

Sonic's relationship with Honey the Cat improves ++!

[X] It didn't come to your head between the duels with the Robot You and leaving Marble Zone once and for all, but you accidentaly let Eggman in the know of how to get the Chaos Emeralds. Getting them before him became more critical than ever, so back to ring catching. Also, of course, you will protect Honey this time around: no use in getting home wasted.

[X] "So this is the final spot for our little partnership..." you mumble, a bit bittersweet.
-[X] "I will not lie. It was nice to have someone to talk for a change," you pause. "At least someone that can talk back, but the animals of Green Hill liked my jokes better."
-[X] "It's so noisy here. How do you sleep?"
-[X] "HEY, HEY ROBOTHEADS! Sonic the Hedgehog is here to dunk you!"

Due to resting between Zones, you have regained 50% of your HP

1 HP regained: Sonic now has 10/10HP

5 HP regained: Honey now has 12/12HP

Spring Yard Zone: Act 1

Your choices modify the stage…

"So this is the final spot for our little partnership..." you mumble, a bit bittersweet.

"...you've really gotta stop with the death flags dude."

You snap your head to her in a flash. "The what flags!?"

"I-ugh, you wouldn't get it." She shakes her head.

"What do you mean I-whoa! It sure is bright in this place!" As you finally get into the amusement park proper, all around are lights of all kinds, flashing around. Though, man is it loud here! "It's so noisy here! How do you sleep?"

"Oh "Mr. Sleeps On The Hard Stone Ground" is here to talk to me about not being able to sleep huh!? I've seen the places and positions you pick!"

Sonic and Honey run 6/50 yards.

Random Encounter #1d100 = 72. Rings!

You have obtained 15 ring! Sonic now has 15 rings!

Sonic and Honey run 12/50 yards.

Random Encounter #1d100 = 36. Obstacle!

RomanceNinja: Climbing is -5 Dexterity for Honey

You jump yourself on the spring bouncing up, grab the ledge at -1 Climbing #3d6 = (2+5+3) 10. Success!

Due to not having the Climbing skill, Honey rolls at -5 Dexterity for Climbing rolls!

Honey jumps onto the spring bouncing up, she grabs the ledge at -1 Climbing #3d6 = 2 +2 +2 6. Success!

You see a large wall coming up before you, and... Huh, what is that? It looks circular, with a star-shape on it, mostly red with bits of yellow and blue.

"It's a spring, jump on it!" Honey shouts next to you.

Well, if she says to jump, why not? As soon as your foot touches it, you feel yourself directly launched high up into the air! "Whoa!" But it doesn't seem like it's enough to full get up this wall, but you are able to grab the edge. You put another hand on it, pulliing yourself up. Honey manages to do the same as well.

Your mind goes back to yesterday. "I will not lie. It was nice to have someone to talk for a change," you pause. "At least someone that can talk back, but the animals of Green Hill liked my jokes better."

"The only reason they don't is because they can't speak! Haha!"

Sonic and Honey run 18/50 yards.

Random Encounter #1d100 = 75. Rings!

You have obtained 15 rings! Sonic now has 30 rings!

Sonic and Honey run 24/50 yards. Honey's house is 1 yard away!

Random Encounter #1d100 = 3.

2 Spikes.

Spikes have a shell of spikes around them, making them unable to be hurt by jumping attacks.

Honey jabs at Spikes 1 #3d6 = (4+5+1) 10. Hit!

Spikes 1 tries to get out of the way #3d6 = (3+1+5) 9. Fails to dodge!

Roll for damage for Spikes 1 #1d6 = 6 Damage.

Spikes 1: -4/6HP. Spikes 1 explodes.

You rev up a Spin Attack at Spikes 2 #3d6 = (1+2+2) 5. Hit!

Spikes 2 tries to get out of the way #3d6 = (3+5+3) 11. Fails to dodge!

Roll for damage for Spikes 2 #1d6-2 = (6-2) 4*1.5 = 6 Damage.

Spikes 2: -4/2HP. Spikes 2 explodes.

"There it is!" Honey says, pointing at one of the buildings. "That's the place!"

Good, we're almost there. There seems to be some bad news though, considering there's two bots standing right outside of it. They look to be something like snails, but with spikes protruding from their backs. Shoot, you don't think you'll be able to use your Spin Jump against these guys at all, but at least you can use your Spin Attack.

You can already see Honey coming you jab one into the ground right away! "Get away from my home!" Well, you could say you get where she's coming from, you weren't too thrilled with these bots being at Green Hill after all.

Well if she's being enthusiastic about this, you might as well too. "HEY, HEY ROBOTHEAD! Sonic the Hedgehog is here to dunk you!" You rev yourself up, missing this feeling since most of the bots back in Marble Zone could fly. You shoot yourself as you cut them in twain! "That's a job done and dusted!"

Sonic and Honey run at 25/50, arriving at the house.

You take in the sight of it, an extremely tall building, with some sort-of see-through material on them. "Wow, you own the whole thing?"

Honey laughs at that. "Pft, nah. Just one of the floors. I'll go up to the third floor. Mind staying down here, would be better for you to get them as a surprise."

What what? "Aw man, I wanted to go in to check out the place!"

"Ha, no. Not letting anyone see it in the messy state it's in, plus I don't work well when there's somebody over my shoulder. It should be done in about..." She puts a finger to her chin. "...8 hours?"

You still don't get this time thing, but even you know that's long! "You sure I can't come in?"

"Ha! No." She slams the door shut in front of you.

Well then, damn.

You are staying at the entrance for 8 hours, each hour that passes by will produce a roll. Should a roll under 15 happen, an enemy encounter will occur.

First Hour #1d100 = 29. Nothing happens.

Second Hour #1d100 = 95. Nothing happens.

Third Hour #1d100 = 61. Nothing happens.

Fourth Hour #1d100 = 98. Nothing happens.

Fifth Hour #1d100 = 34. Nothing happens.

Sixth Hour #1d100 = 84. Nothing happens.

Seventh Hour #1d100 = 22. Nothing happens.

Eight Hour #1d100 = 79. Nothing happens.

"Done!"

Finally! You were dying of boredom here, even with the new surroundings around you!

As she comes out the door, in her hands are the items you've been waiting for. As a pair of white gloves, along with red and white shoes, are now in view.

You have obtained White Gloves!

You have obtained Red and White Shoes!

—

Now that you have proper attire, here's another aspect of combat to be talked about.

Punches and kicks. Punches are performed at -1 Thrust Damage, meaning that if you were to use it with your current strength, you would be throwing punches at 1d6-3 damage. Meanwhile kicks perform at pure Thrust Damage, meaning you can perform them at your current standard of 1d6-2 damage, but in return you get -2 to hit when trying to use a kick.

These are weak as of right now, but if you were to upgrade these items in the future rather than the 8-hour rush job, in combination with new future techniques...

"Well, what do you think?"

Bah. Well if she doesn't want to come, you'll have fun without her! The familiar setting you are in starts to spin, and within your sights is the Chaos Emerald surrounded by four walls, glowing a purple hue. Well that's a rare colour! You never got to regularly see that in Green Hill.

What follows is rather routine, and though you screw up slightly in the start by missing the walls a few times, you eventually grind it down. The wall breaks as you snatch the Chaos Emerald into your hands. As such, the world around you starts turning white once more...

And the world turns white…

Spring Yard Zone: Act 1 cleared! Special Stage 5 cleared! Purple Chaos Emerald obtained!

You have obtained 29 rings! (50 taken to use the Special Stage)

You plop out of a ring, face first on the ground.

"So that's what it looks like from this view. Interesting. Giant ring to get you in, giant ring to get you out... That raises way too many questions about Flickies' Island."

"Hwuh?" You groan, your head is still spinning from the landing you took, unable to process the information she said.

"Nevermind. Anyways, you got it?"

You hold out a thumbs up in response. As you finally take in your surroundings, you see that the both of you mind it fairly high elevation wise and...

Whoa.

That's a lot of water. More water than you've ever seen in your life. And down below is a bridge, humongous compared to the ones in Green Hill. It stretches to what seems like forever, into an island far in the distance. "Well... There it is." Honey says. Though you can only stand in awe at how beautiful it looks from here.

You smack the cheeks on your face, trying to regain control of yourself. This is it, this is where you'll both be parting ways.

"Honey..." you say, facing her. "I swear that this city will keep being noisy... But with the noise of people. Hero promise!" And though you try to be brief and immediately run off to the distance, Honey grabs you by the arm, stopping you in your tracks.

"Hey what do you think you're doing just trying to go that quickly?"

You shift your eyes away from her. Truth be told... You were kind of embarrassed. You didn't exactly feel like you could do well with a sappy farewell. Better to get it done quick right?

She sighs. "Thank goodness your face tells me everything most of the time. Seriously, if you're not going to do it, I'll just force it on you." And though you look away, you feel her arms go around you as she pulls you into a hug.

"Okay okay I get it! I'll see you after I kick that Eggman's face in!" And with a quick turnaround, you get out of her arms and start running away, back into Spring Yard Zone.

"Hahaha! You better do that Sonic!" You can only hear her laugh in the distance as you run further away. Geez, you just wanted a cool Hero moment. Not... That.

A blush sticks to your face, unable to leave.

As you run, you think back to something you said there. "'With the noise of people?' What did I even mean by that?" you ask yourself. "Was like that one time with the odd box? Well, I guess that place did seem pretty noisy. The fun kind of noisy. The kind that I want to bring back here."

You bring yet another promise to yourself.

Honey's POV

As you look into the distance, you can only feel a worry building up inside you. But... Hey, he's Sonic the Hedgehog right? Future Hero of the Islands. Maybe you should have more faith in that foolish Hedgehog of yours.

After all, that's what friends are for, right?

Sonic's relationship with Honey the Cat improves +++!

[X] Perhaps you want to take some time off to heal?
-[X] No. Go right on to the next day.

[X] Five down. One to go. Once you seize the last Emerald, you will possess all the Chaos Emeralds that Eggman looked for. Now, go hunting for some rings and go full speed ahead. You missed doing that.

[X] "Huh...kind of quiet without a company," you moan. "At least I can blast away with ease."
-[X] "City noise, city noise..." you mumble. "How does a city sounds, huh? Is it noisy like a waterfall? Or like bugs?" Maybe you should have asked that to Honey before leaving, but oh well. You will have enough time once you whoop Eggman's ass out of the island.
-[X] "Ah...at last somewhere where I can go all-out," you say, blasting fastly through the zone."
-[X] "You make me spin round!" you sing, crushing some badniks.

Waiting for Honey - AilingStar
Waiting for Honey

Caramel the Cat sometimes wished his wife wasn't so stubborn.

When he'd first met Candy the Cat, he'd found that fire in her eyes entrancing. He still did, even as it grew… not dimmer, just calmer. It was still there, brewing under the surface, even years after she had hung up her gloves.

But that same fire made her do reckless things sometimes. Like staying behind on South Island while it went to hell, to make sure their daughter would be unharmed, as he crossed the bridge to make sure their sons were safe.

Caramel sighed as he stared at the tent ceiling, before rising up off the cot. It seemed like Sweet and Sour were still sleeping, still trying to recover from their ordeal. Sour's hand looked to be doing better, at least. Small blessings.

Caramel sighed and walked out of the tent and into the refugee camp that had been set up near Casino Night zone. The place was hardly a good place to live long-term, but it was still better than nothing, and some of the folk living there had offered to set up a few camps for the refugees from South Island.
Caramel and the boys had been here for a week now, and there was still no word from Honey or Candy. A part of him wanted so badly for them to come home. Another part wondered if they'd have a home to go back to, once everything was said and done.

"Hey Caramel!" He looked over to Cupcake, one of the cousins who had also made it to West Side Island. "Good news! Turns out there's an old film lot that's being repurposed into an actual place to stay!"

That made Caramel raise his eyebrows. "Really now?"

"Yeah, I think they're calling it Studiopolis Zone or something. No points for creativity, I guess. But hey, if it means having roofs over our heads, who cares about the name, right?"

"I suppose so," Caramel chuckled. At least things were starting to look up.

-

Candy the Cat was, in a word, stressed. It had been weeks since the invasion, now, and she hadn't heard any word from Honey. Honey's friends, at least the ones Candy had seen in the chaos, hadn't seen her either. Apparently she had been out of her house when the invasion happened.

Perhaps that was why Candy stayed behind while Caramel took Sweet and Sour across the bridge to West Side island. She couldn't bear the thought of leaving, not while Honey was still out there.

Was it selfish? Quite Possibly, but for the first few days she just couldn't get herself to move from the bridge, other than to occasionally help the small resistance force hold the line at the bridge, keeping Robotnik's forces from taking the escape route. It may have been a few years since she'd last fought seriously, but she still knew how to throw a punch, and was familiar enough with the streets of Spring Yard Zone that she could occasionally catch a robot or two off-guard.

She had to keep holding the line as long as she could. She couldn't risk her daughter arriving at the bridge only to find it occupied, or worse, destroyed.

But no matter how hard the resistance fought, they kept getting pushed back. The robots kept getting closer and closer to fully blocking off access to the bridge, and Candy was starting to lose hope.

Then, one day while she was keeping watch for robots, she caught something. A flash of red and black and yellow. Her heart skipped a beat. Was that Honey?

She wanted to shout for her daughter, to run to her and hold her in her arms, but she held herself back. Doing that would only make her a target.

She didn't need to, though. Honey saw her, beamed, and ran up to her. "Mom, you're here!" The two embraced, then separated as Candy gave her a quizzical look. "What are you doing here, Mom?"

"Waiting for you, Honey!" She gave a bit of a smirk at her daughter's befuddled look. "What, did you think that Karate I taught you was just for show?"

"I… guess I never thought about it."

The two shared a small laugh, then Candy sighed. "My shift ends in an hour or so. How about you go freshen up at camp, then you can tell me all about what's been happening with you?"

Honey briefly looked back into Spring Yard Zone with a pensive look on her face, then turned to her mother and nodded. "That sounds great, Mom."

I don't know where these characterizations came from. They just happened. Also sorry if there were some other plans for Studiopolis Zone, I remembered that Casino Night was the only major settlement on West Side Island and I had an idea. I can change it if need be.
