Burden of the Emerald Empire (A Legend of the Five Rings Tale)

Hisao honestly isn't sure. What Kaneka wants most is freedom, in that sense a minor clan has the most versatility, on the other hand status lets you get up to a lot of things so benefits and problems with both.

[X] Yes
[X] Grant him an Imperial Name (he'd do well in the Seppun), or minor clan status - his choice. He's earned it. Straight-up ask him which one he wants.

This way we can give him as much or as little work as he wants.

Tinysquid had a more direct solution

I honestly wasn't sure about which clan name to give, but him retiring is a must. He made a direct askance, in private, after doing alot for us. We can't ask for more than this.

I know it's not yet the time, but about the gates, it'll sadden me if we can't find another way to make it work, the jade should still be needed for the insides, and we shouldn't simply take that much from the crab.

I know it is a bit belated, but can we step up all Jade mining operations?

I know the Crab have at least one mine, but is there any other seams that are untapped?

Year 7: The Low Becomes High
In the end, you cannot deny your uncle, the man who guided and stood by you through those turbulent first years his request. While tradition says to retire at twenty years, truth is you can in theory do so at any time, particularly for appointed positions. While there will be some political fall out, Kaneka has not gotten less popular for leading the war effort after all.

While giving him the Toturi name is by most standards the right thing...its not the smart thing to do. In time you and he will pass and it might your grandchildren, or your great grand children, but the question of who should have the throne will arise again. You will not make the mistake of your grandfather.

That doesn't mean you're intent on deciding his future. Raising him to the Otomo is one option, granting him a minor fief in hmm you suppose there's territory near the Shinmon Mori that you could use to give your uncle his own clan. But, you've ordered him enough, his fate will be back in his own hands.

"Uncle, I don't want you to leave, but I can't deny, your request. You may retire at the the end of the year. As to giving you a name...I can raise you to the Otomo, or I can grant you a minor clan. Which do you wish?"

Kaneka looks at you for a long moment, eyes showing nothing.
"Tradition was that the brothers of the Emperor joined the Otomo right?"

You nod.

"Then I too, ask to join the Otomo" he says.

"Of course uncle. I take it you have someone in mind to take over your position?" You ask.

"I have a few people in mind, I'll have a report for you soon while I talk Chagatai and Shigetoshi down." Kaneka says.

"...you don't want them?"

"Leaving aside their other duties. Their rivalry will cause problems if either one of them is put above the other as Shogun. They'll be angry with me, but well, I've dealt with them both being angry with me before."

"I notice you don't say anything about Bayush Paneki-san." You say one hand twirling around a calligraphy brush.

"He's a strong choice, but you've not exactly had the best interactions with Scorpion, and you do already have one of them on the council." Kaneka says.

"I don't have a Lion on my council." You say.

"You don't have Crab either, given this business with Otosan Uchi...inclined to bring one of them on myself. But I'll give you options." Kaneka says.

"Very well uncle, now that work is concluded between us, trounce me in Go?" You ask lightly

"An elder must teach" Kaneka says dryly as he goes to the cabinet and takes out the go set.

Month of the Horse Twenty Ninth Day

Shosuro Ayumi kowtows as you gesture for her to enter your office. You're not sure why she sent a messenger requesting a one on one, but you can guess that you won't like it. Gaijin saying things is never a good thing.

"Shosuro-san, you said needed to speak?" You ask.

"Hai my Emperor"

"Sit down then."

"Of course, always a pleasure to serve." She says.

"What is happening in the foreign ministry."

"You will recall, that I said that the Yodotai leader, Angelos was moving to crush his last strategoi yes?" She asks.

You nod.

"He has done something we did not expect. This strategoi, who names himself Leo Gabras, has come to the Jewelled city seeking asylum, instead of being...castrated and blinded before being placed in a monastery. The Sultan seems incline to grant asylum to Leo, however, Angelos demands through Suetonius that we have him removed post haste." Ayumi says.

"Why do we not do so? Beyond perhaps sympathy for being mutilated so?" you ask

"It has been asked to me to find a way to make life difficult for the Yodotai. It could be considered that this is the opportunity we have waiting for. Allowing Gabras to rebuild and gather his strength could restart the civil war."

You nod, twirling around the calligraphy brush in your hand.
"Thus weakening our greatest foreign threat at the cost of committing to something in the future."

"...hai" Ayumi agrees.

"What do the other ambassadors report?" You ask.

"The Pelmyrians believe that keeping him is a good thing. The Senpet are ambivalent, while the Ivindi think that it is not worth the risk of a war." she answers.

Wonderful, none of them want to actually put the pact to the test. Truth be told you aren't either, it's more useful as a thing that exists.

You nod and gesture for her to continue.

"On the whole, I believe that if he had come before Asahina Sekawa's test, that we should have done it, but as it stands, looking outside our borders is at this time, not to the benefit of the Empire, or you. My own people think that it would be wise to simply assure the ambassador that we are pressuring the Sultan to send him home...and then tip off Gabras to let him disappear before the Sultan's guards do."

"How duplicitous." you comment wryly.

"For the Emperor all things are honourable, some are even pleasurable" She says with a throaty chuckle looking you over.

"Do you think the Yodotai will see through it?"

"Possibly, their own Ministry is known for training the Vulpes, or foxes...they are not as skilled as Scorpion and largely focused within, but they have a few...that I would like to remove at some point."

"So it's a gamble then."

"The luck of the Toturi is known" Ayumi says.

"Hai it is known."

Month of the Goat, twelfth day

Your hand isn't supposed to be in this much pain, but as Kaname gives a loud cry, you can't help but wonder when your fingers will work again. The birth is easier than last time, practice does help it seems. The healer coaxes for just a bit more as the head crowns.

Below you hear a loud scream as the world is suddenly quiet.

"Its a girl, my Emperor...and she is an Ishiken" she says.

An Ishiken...oh dear.
"Hai.." you say dully.

Kaname gestures for her daughter to be brought to her.

"...Well Hisao-kun...do you want to name your daughter?

"Yuina...we'll name her Yuina" you declare.

(Your new daughter is a shugenja with connection to the void, not quite the top end but up there. You got a 27 on 1k1 for that)

[] Kazuko
[X] Yuina

According to a dubious naming site I quickly googled, Kazuko means "Child of Harmony" and isn't Void the Element the brings the other 4 into harmony?

[X] Taka

I picked the name "Taka" as I was inspired by the excellent but unfortunately deceased "Samurai Taka" quest by Havocfett. I believe that "Taka" would also be an appropriate name as it is a unisex name that means tall honorable.

@keenscythe
Void is the element which binds all others into their endless dance.

Also possibly antimatter. Void Dragon ain't talking.
Then maybe

[] Yuina

would fit better? As supposedly it means "Bind Together".

Also LMAO at Void = Antimatter, no wonder the Heavens were pissed at Hisao when Sezaru (The Rokugani Wizard That Did It) decided to go fuck it, everyone dies.

Void isn't literally antimatter, but it does have qualities like it, in that void is capable of simply deleting parts of reality in a matter not unlike antimatter destroying matter as sci fi has it.
Most Ishiken don't like doing it though. Void Dragon gets cranky.

Since we have Air 3 a TN 20 won't be difficult to surpass? I mean, I could be reading the system wrongly since I never learned legend of the five rings, but 3d10 for DF 20 seems harsh...
