Ascensions and Transgressions: the Tales of Keris Dulmeadokht (Exalted game)

Five Calibrations Pass - Calibration 774
Well, if Fire was a display of how well Keris's training of her subordinates has gone, Calibration 774 is very much her reaping her rewards for an utterly ridiculous season of successes and triumphs. We've got the Calibration plays she coaxed Sasi into writing two years ago finally being shown, we've got the results of her very impressive boasting about two major assassination missions in Water and Wood, we've got her souls' successes and even showing off the Cult of Nululi to their lady! Yes, this is a delightfully positive Calibration for our girl.

(so everyone brace for the almost-inevitable disaster next season)

As is her usual role in Exalted, Iudicavisse has shown up to be a massive bitch and complicate the protagonist's life. Does she have a reason to be doing this (because a child could see it's not exactly going to be good for the Reclamation to suddenly give all their most powerful agents a compelling reason to sabotage each others' efforts), or is she just getting in her yearly quota of fucking with people?

As is her usual role in Exalted, Iudicavisse has shown up to be a massive bitch and complicate the protagonist's life. Does she have a reason to be doing this (because a child could see it's not exactly going to be good for the Reclamation to suddenly give all their most powerful agents a compelling reason to sabotage each others' efforts), or is she just getting in her yearly quota of fucking with people?

Because, as detailed in her write-up:

Iudicavisse has no real desires upon Creation. Oh, she might seed a few cults here or there, but that is nothing more than a momentary diversion. No, all her real effort is focussed on subjugating Hell. Given the chance, she would redouble the torment of the Yozis so that all within Malfeas suffer worse than Cecelyne. Of all the Yozis she detests the Ebon Dragon the most, but she hates all of them in precisely enumerated ways. Even Cecelyne bears her contempt, for her foolish bleak depression and her previous idealism. Whether she has yet successfully chained other Third Circles can vary from game to game, but her ultimate aim is certainly to impose a Surrender Oath-level restriction upon every other demon - even, within time, the other souls of Cecelyne.

The appearance of the Green Sun Princes is an unwelcome setback to her plans. While she joined with the conspiracy that made them - for there was no way she would pass up such power - she sought to split the project from within. Their existence is a reproach to her. Not only do humans wield powers only permitted to the Yozis, but she has long aimed to isolate Hell from Creation so she can slowly choke the other demons of prayer and cultists. Ligier's lackies have undone three millennia of progress in five short years. She detests Lilunu and her resemblance to long-dead Ruvelia - and holds Ligier in deep contempt for the way he treats their tool as almost an equal. She waits and watches, looking for her chance to break up this unprecedented alliance of demon princes.

She'd rather rule in Hell than share power in Heaven.

"Suddenly giving all Hell's most powerful agents a compelling reason to sabotage each others' efforts" is exactly and precisely Iudicavisse's goal, as Keris calls out and specifies when she's bitching to Lilunu. She doesn't come out and say it outright because she's not stupid, but her sarcasm makes it pretty clear she knows Iudicavisse is deliberately trying to sabotage the Reclamation.

"Uuuurgh." Keris sighs. "Well, since we'll be judged on loyalty and performance, hah," the flat syllable leaves no doubt as to how far she trusts that claim, compared to 'whichever choice will fracture the council furthest', "I think me'n'Sasi are safe, like I said. We're both loyal as anything, and we've proven it over and over, and we're doing pretty well with basically no assets."

I wouldn't be too sure about that.

I'd fully expect Iudicavisse to judge based solely on "What have you done for me, recently?" and demoting an otherwise powerful and successful Director to promote a flunky in their place solely to show everyone involved that she could is a very Iudicavisse thing to do.

Well, that scene with Shy Doe promises interesting things in the future. And Haneyl isn't far behind. She better hope she succeeds though.

... yes. That is in fact what Keris is saying. The actual choice Iudicavisse will make will be based on "what will fracture the council most", and the feuds between Keris-Deveh and Sasi-Glorious mean she won't want to remove any of those four, because they're already infighting and sabotaging each other and being spiteful and hateful and incapable of cooperation. She'll remove someone who's too able to work with other Directors, or who she can replace with someone who'll fragment and sabotage the Council of Thirteen even more. Probably, as Keris says, either Orange Blossom to remove her annoyingly large indebted-to-her voting bloc, or Ximmin for being too willing to cooperate and to replace him with the thuggish and wrathful Kasteen.

Keris is being sarcastic with those italics, and verbally going along with the "official" explanation for why Iudicavisse will justify not kicking her and Sasi off while rolling her eyes and not believing a word of it.

I recognize that Iudicavisse is motivated by her own personal desire to sabotage the Reclamation but I also think that the Unquestionables as a whole also have some very strong reasons to oppose any high-level Inferal Exalted cooperation that could become a new leadership structure. I would expect that Iudicavisse is only getting away with this relatively obvious sabotage of an attempt to substantially improve Infernal Exalted operations in Creation because she has the de facto backing of many other Unquestionables.

My perspective is that behavior of the Unquestionables is always being shaped by an awareness that the Green Sun Princes are the spiritual heirs to the Solars that defeated and imprisoned the Yozi. This is directly manifested in how much the Unquestionables obviously enjoy treating the Infernal Exalted as sexual playthings, worshippers, and loyal followers. It is also seems to manifest on a more pervasive level in how Unquestionables continually work to ensure that the Green Sun Princes rely on them for resources, direction, and prestige. I think that the Unquestionables are very concerned over the possibility that the willingness of the Green Sun Princes to accept their existence as devoted and well-compensated servants will decline as they develop their personal power and collective status as a faction. This gives the Unquestionables a very solid reason to oppose the establishment of any new system that makes it easier for Infernal Exalted leaders to independently issue orders and provide rewards regardless of the obvious benefits it can be expected to provide. The current system of yearly check-ins and extremely limited cooperation may be inefficient at directing operations in support of larger goals but it is excellent at forcing the Infernal Exalted to rely on the Unquestionables. Allowing Iudicavisse to sabotage this nascent effort to foster cooperation among the Directorates provides them with a means of shutting down something that could have eventually turned into the foundations for an Infernal Exalted system of self-government without making their unwillingness to reduce their control blatant or alienating their most favored subordinates.

A further element of the power dynamics of the Reclamation that would give the Unquestionables (except anomalies like Noh that don't prioritize self-preservation or power) a strong reason to support Iudicavisse is the severe threat posed by disloyalty from the experienced Infernal Exalted. Any Unquestionable can be expected easily dominate inexperienced Infernal Exalted and will only benefit from taking them on as uniquely valuable subordinates. Their problem is that this changes as their Infernal Exalted subordinates acquire greater personal power and develop connections with their peers. A circle of experienced Infernal Exalted versus a single Third Circle Soul would be a tough conflict, but I would expect the ability of the Infernal Exalted to operate freely in Creation and bind Demons with sorcery to can be leveraged into an overwhelming advantage. The balance would tilt even further in favor of the Infernal Exalted if you bring in the possibility of them acquiring allies from rival Unquestionables the Deathlords, the Solar Exalted, or Yu-Shan. At worst it would end in a stalemate as the difficulty of projecting power from Hell into Creation means that overcoming the true rebellion of 1 or more Directions would be almost impossible. Even a single rogue Infernal Exalted could pose a serious threat that is extremely difficult to counter based on their ability to freely use sorcery to target valuable Second Circle Souls for destruction or share information with the many enemies of Hell while taking advantage of the vastness of Creation and whatever skills they used to survive working on behalf of he Reclamation to avoid reprisal.

This is my take on providing some interesting world-building but it also seems to have some implications for the future development of this plot thread. If Iudicavisse is working with the discrete backing of the other Unquestionables it means that the Council of Directors can't really expect to go over her head by appealing to their allies. They will be forced to either accept that their plans to foster greater cooperation have ended or step up this conflict to another level by rejecting the authority of Iudicavisse to freely interfere in the internal affairs of the Infernal Exalted. The latter option might seem like a unexpected escalation but the Directors are all extremely ambitious people who have become accustomed to operating freely as powerful leaders and can expect their grand plans to benefit greatly from increased cooperation. It would not be at all out of character for them to choose conflict with an Unquestionable over humiliation and the loss of power.

Yeah, I got that Keris was being sarcastic about it, but I meant was that I wouldn't be too sure about her and Sasi being safe.

I could see Ludicavisse going after either of them in an overbitch power move to show not just the Council of Thirteen, but Infernals as a whole that their position and status is granted by grace alone.

Who gets kicked looks like it will ultimately come down to who has networked with the other bosses the best. Each Infernal Director is constantly politicking to their chosen Unquestionable. OB might be the most obvious in her empire building despite orders, but between herself and her two indebted she can probably swing the vote away from her just by having both the Unquestionable in her corner and those Unquestionable that her bloc has favorable access to.

Keris, by dint of being herself, also glossed over the other factor keeping her from ever being on the chopping block. She's Wind Kissed. No 3rd Circle is ever going to want to have her were they can't see her and tie her down in obligations.

I'm wondering if it's going to be Demitrea that gets the axe as the one to call all the directors together for this meeting. The successful Directors learned to back channel away from Ludicavisse's sight when in Creation, probably from the fallout of the first time they tried to do this when the Reclamation was young.

Separately, interesting that Sasi wrote to have her mother killed instead of corrupted. I'm interested to know if watching the plays has given her some form of catharsis.

I seem to recall there being a google doc containing information on the Keruby breeds and all the other first-circle Souls stemming from Keris, but it doesn't seem to be listed in the information section or anywhere in the interconnected files available in this thread. I would appreciate it if someone could provide me with a link and it would probably be for the best if it is added to the information section. The Kerisian Ecosystem has gotten very complicated and it would be a lot easier to understand everything that is going on if there was a single document we could easily reference. I feel as if I am missing a lot of fantastic worldbuilding.

There's no Keruby doc afaik, it's on AO3 here.

Also here's the 'beasts of Krisity' one which is a doc.

I was referring to the google doc links in the first post of this thread. They contain a lot of valuable background information and worldbuilding. The character sheet is particularly useful as having a clear list of Keris's many supernatural qualities and abilities makes it much easier to understand the story.

The story of Keris was also presented in google docs before this thread and the ao3 version were created.

PS: I also have access to the Green Cherry Demonomicon which has information on many of the Homebrew Demons developed by Aleph and Earthscorpion. It is a great resource, but is totally focused on the Yozi Demons with no content involving their Kerisian counterparts.

Yeah I know you were, but as far as I can tell there is no Google Doc sheet for the Keris demons.

The Blue Glass Maiden instituted stack ranking for the directors. Truly, Iudicavisse is a boss-Princess from Hell. I imagine she styles her hair into sharp double buns too.

Although overshadowed by all of the other drama in the most recent chapter, I fear the conflict with Eko may prove to be just as significant in the long run. The Joyful Wind has generally been low-maintenance compared to her siblings, but that may have led into a degree of benign neglect as the squeakier wheels siblings got more attention. Eko is only able to squeak five days a year, at a time when Keris is too busy to hear her.

The last Calibration where Keris spent any significant amount of time with Eko was back in RY 769 (From One, Many) - five years before the current chapter. Keris spent Calibration 770 running through Cecelyne, 771 fighting Kasteem and working on Yuula's challenge (and some things Eko forgot about), and both 772 and 773 working as MoC. The last time Eko had a subplot of her own was back in 770 (A Very Saatan Coup).

By my count, this is only the third time we've seen Keris pull one of her children back into Kerisity by force (the first time was at the beginning of A Very Saatan Coop, the second was in Endless Eight Interlude 2). Interestingly, Eko was the subject all three times. What does it say that Callesco, Haneyl, and Zanara haven't been treated the same way, even though they have all been as wayward? Is it because Keris doesn't feel she can communicate with her eldest? Because she thinks Eko isn't as necessary to her plans the others are? A mixture of both?

---

Speculation: I can think of a couple of good reasons for Eko to hang out with Asarin (beyond the fact that they are besties). For one, it may have been a good demonstration of how good a friend Keris can be; Asarin is particularly good for this because she's powerful enough to attract attention and weak enough that Eko can make a significant contribution. The other is that Eko may have been working on the Trials of Sorcery. After all, Asarin is known as a powerful sorceress.

Besides, you know, gathering rare materiel. Like a hellstrider.

Speaking of hellstriders, will we be seeing the 3CD hellstriders soon? That Slayer exaltation has been missing since at least Wood 767 and Noh may have a list of "volunteers" drawn up already.

Five Calibrations Pass - Early Air 775
Aaaaand we're back, with Keris completing her new murderspear in Early Air 775 just in time for some bad news, a quick peek at how Vali is doing (badly), and some delightful Oula doing her thing and Oulaing (read: making use of assets she hasn't strictly speaking told Aunty Keris that she's using and taking the initiative to have them do things she hasn't technically informed Aunty Keris she's using them for, but it's all totally fine because Aunty Keris won't make a fuss about it as long as nobody brings it to her attention, shut up).

Extras:
Aleph: So, heh, Keris has basically got this big tank full of what is basically different solutions and mixtures of liquids with the spear skeleton floating at the core, and is infusing and adjusting concentrations while everything's in suspension and it's all dreadfully, dreadfully complex and finicky and an ill-timed earthquake would ruin it all because the delicate layers can't mix so there are oil-barriers held in suspension too, etc.
Aleph: It's very much not a Ligierian style of crafting, and is frankly niche even by vitriol-smith standards, since they tend to add vitriol to solids rather than partially dissolve and re-accrete solids in vitriol (though the principles are still the same).
EarthScorpion: Ah, it's a question of the right base to add to create a foundation for the precipitation
Aleph: Exactly. Honestly, this is complex enough (Artefact 4) and a niche enough crafting style (partial dissolution in suspension of vitriol using an azoth bath on the inner part of a dual-material artefact) that there are legit probably only a couple of dozen beings in all the Demon City who could pull this off, with Khereon Ul topping the list.
Aleph: Many more who could get the same eventual result, or something equivalent to it - a spear that can extend, attack on its own and create temporary minions, etc. But this particular method is very high-level in a very niche field.
Aleph: Okay, uh, roll questions. Destruction Begets Creation gives me 1 success for each Resources dot and 3 sux for each exotic ingredient I consume by destroying things that are "complete, usable items in their own right" to make my stuff. Living things always qualify. This consumed an Artefact 3 spear and an Artefact 2 living thing; what does that count for in terms of successes?
Aleph: And secondly, what level of stunt is this?
EarthScorpion: Hmm. So, those numbers kind of don't work with the crafting system we have in place for this kind of long-term crafting, but regardless, both artefacts here are exotic ingredients so are 3 each. And it's a 3-dot stunt.
Aleph: Hmm. Elinvar over azoth-moonsilver, a spiteful venomous demon-spear that twists flesh and raises corpses as meatpuppet automatons and demands blood from those who would wield it and which likes to perpetuate spiteful suffering and use poison, acid and bleeding to fight and which considers itself a great artist in its bizarre and vile flesh-crafting. Lei Mei might have been a Pyrian demon, but would you say the form Keris has forged Vipera into conforms to the Demon Sea's understanding of beauty?
EarthScorpion: Yes, especially since Keris probably has her a bit sea-snake-y.
Aleph: Lol. And since this is technically a strategic action, I can't use Excellencies, yes?
EarthScorpion: Uh, hmm. It's an individual action, I think it's easier if we zoom out of strategic time. Diff 8.
Aleph: I am not going to complain at all about that. In that case that's Cog 4 + Occult 5 + Empyreal Alchemist/Vitriolic Forge 3 + 1 bonus {render spirits or exotic reagents down into chalcanth via personally-refined vitriol} + 3 stunt + 6 DBC sux + 4 PMA sux + 9 Kimmy ExD {impossibly high standards, poison, acid, bleeding, further disfigurement, no restraint in tormenting enemies, new shapes as useful as they are uncomfortable, etc etc etc this is very Kimmy} = 25 [+10] for the roll.

Tossing the corpse to the ground, covered in blood that mostly isn't his own, his scars gleaming like metal in the low light, he throws up one arm with exhausted pride. "Too weak!" he roars. "Too weak for me! You said you would send me your best today! What was that, Kalathais?" His gesture takes in the bodies in the sand. "What was that?!"

Vali: "Was this your greatest champion!? Bring me more!"

The mechanisms chitter in alarm, as they do every time. They are scared of him. The voice which speaks through them, Shaper Kalathais, does not seem to fear him. But his servants, his mouthpieces do.

Automaton: "Seriously, it feels like we're in a morality story about hubris and not as the one getting humbled."

Calesco nods, still wobbly. Keris hasn't seen her like this, since... well, since she had that little breakdown at the thought of Keris working on the Street and the thought of gaining a new sibling who'd change who Keris was if she got affected by it. She's seen a bit of Calesco she isn't sure she's ever shown much before, but her daughter really doesn't like the thought of her family changing - and especially not her mother.

It's been a while, but when did that happen? I can't remember that conversation.

"You're being very childish," Ellyssivera says, voice soft and almost - disgustingly, painfully - kind.

Oula's eyes narrow sharply. "What do you know?" she demands, in a much more normal tone of voice. This is more quiet smugness than usual for Ellyssivera. And she's never brought anything like this up before. "Or think you know?" she adds absently, just to cover herself. "Why do you suddenly care whether I like you or not?"

"You don't think other people watch you," Ellyssivera says. "You don't think people notice how you have no pack. That you drive people away. That you have no court despite the fact you are a duchess, for you spend almost all your time in Creation. You are a master of the All-Queen's sorcery school, and will marry Prince Rathan. This is what you hold close instead of companionship. In that, you are much like the All-Queen. She has no pack of equals, either, but she has clan. The royalty, and us; we are her brood. You do not have that. It must be lonely.

"And I am one of the few who approaches your status in the All-Queen's eyes. Myself, Rounen, Anyuu. She holds you half a step above the rest of us, but not so far that you are out of sight."

Jaw set stubbornly, Oula dismisses the preachy drivel. How like a fogsventka to make everything about 'packs' and 'companionship'. As if Haneyl's dragon aides are any different to the constant war for status and peerage in the Sea. As if Oula cares what other people think of her. She doesn't need a court when she's attached to Rathan's, and she doesn't care about 'driving people away' when the ones that matter to her are close.

Ellyssivera: "You need friends you dunce. Not just rivals, lovers, or bosses."

Oula: "Fuck you, I do what I want!"

Oula stalks off towards the door with her fists clenched, brine stinging in her eyes. Ellyssivera's just jealous. Jealous and full of hungry one ignorance. She's seeing everything through her stupid pack mentality and projecting, that's all. Oula's not lonely. She's not fucking fragile.
She's not weak. And she's not going to listen to insults veiled by flower petals that pretend mockery isn't a threat to her position.
Behind her, she hears a sigh - and then the sound of Ellyssivera moving onto Oula's food.

Ellyssivera: "That bomb is gonna explode into so many pretty colors. Oh well, not gonna put me off my appetite."

You know, I have never thought about why Calesco is constantly having bad break ups until now.

It's because she is compelled by her very nature to lash out at people close to her, without the least regard to proportion, surroundings, or even immediate safety (see Chir). So she's the sweetest girl ever towards her romantic interests, until the moment she flips out and hurls abuse at them. Then they break up with her (or worse, Calesco has to be the one doing the break up because she cares too much to trap them in an abusive relationship).

This may be one of the Calesco's motivations for learning to be a joyful priestess. It may help her build more distant relationships that aren't doomed to melt down.

No, she has constant breakups because she's literally not able to not be a serial disaster lesbian.

It's a deva lady thing.

Also, Calesco doesn't/can't see what she does as abuse even when/if it is. Her love is TLA-love and teaching through pain counts as Compassionate for that.

Is "serial disaster lesbian" an allusion to something? If so, it's gone completely over my head.

I'm pretty sure Calesco can see the pain she's causing others, and doesn't like that. It's why she hides her radiant angel form outside of very special situations.

Basically she falls into and out of heads-over-heels love.

And when she's in starlight mode - IE when she's doing the teach-through-pain mode or light-blasting people - TLA Compassion is in full effect. Phrasing was bad there, I apologize.

Remember that Calesco was the one who remembered Keris' true past when Keris herself had repressed it so hard she'd effectively forgotten it.

Including how her relationship with Gull degenerated, and how she became abusive towards the end.

Even if Calesco isn't the part of Keris that holds the capacity for that, and I feel like Calesco does in fact hold a significant chunk of Keris' sadistic tendencies, she was the one who had that memory informing her on romantic relationships since before she cared about romance.

I wonder if Oula's problem is common among her kerub-evolution, given that they all tend towards yandere obsession with the one they give their heart to, or if she takes it farther than most of her breed-siblings do.

Vali I see is currently playing Conan. Wonder when he'll find the usual love interest?
