Well, I always got the impresion that Gherman was forced into his position, mostly because of his dialogue while sleeping, and it has also been suggested in this quest with his inability to answer sertain questions.

Then, again, we have the LORD backing us up, and our first reaction when we see the Moon Presence is provably going to be filling it with bayonets, so...
