A Villain In A World Of Heroes

[X] Whisper the riddles and their answers. (Clouds *specifically Cumulonimbus clouds, but I think just clouds will work here*, Nothing, and Fire, respectively)
-[X] If that fails to get a reaction, then tell the dragon the answers.
[X] If the dragon attacks you, run.

If we don't have to wake up a dragon to pass this test, then I'd rather not; Dragons tend to get all breath weapon-y when roused.

How would our relatively uneducated protagonist in a world in which clouds -- of all things -- are likely not analyzed... know this?

Though I agree that we should avoid waking the dragon if possible.

Are you refereeing to the Cumulonimbus thing? Because, yes, your character wouldn't know that.

Hence my qualifier; that just "Clouds" will work here. I'm just trying to prove, perhaps (or perhaps not) subconsciously, that I'm smarter than you. As you can tell, it's not working in the slightest.

[X] Wait for the dragon to wake up.
-[X] When he does tell him the answers (Clouds, Nothing, and Fire).
-[X] Tell him his scales are shiny.
-[X] If he looks hungry run and come back when you think hes asleep again.

why is the second one nothing
i'm kinda confuse about that ?

It's more powerful than the gods.
It's more evil than a devil.
The serfs have it.
The wise need it.
If you eat it, you'll die.
What am I?

becomes

Nothing is more powerful than the gods.
Nothing is more evil than a devil.
The serfs have Nothing.
The wise need Nothing.
If you eat Nothing, you'll die.

Each of the lines makes sense with this word, though there may still be words that fit better.

Fair warning, the corridor/tunnel we used to enter the dragon chamber was a smooth straight line. We are not going to be able to avoid dragon breath in there.

It's riddles then be ready to fight, we have nowhere to run.

No we're not going to be able to avoid breath attacks, but keep in mind that a dragon is also physically overwhelming. I'm hoping that the fire badger hearts will provide some manner of flame resistance, but even if they don't; I don't see us surviving potentially instant decapitation, dismemberment, blunt-force trauma, massive puncture wounds, and still fire if we have to fight the dragon.

Depending on the breath's casting time and the speed of our water orbs, we may be able to extinguish its spark before it breaths, though this seems massively unlikely.

Other than that, we don't really have much in our arsenal that can do much to anything that possesses such mass, let alone dermal fortitude.

Fighting it should be the absolute last-resort. If we run, we can probably come back later after we've become stronger, and are significantly more likely to survive that encounter. Assuming the doors haven't sealed up, running would be the best option if it so comes down to that.

Black Dragons (at least in D&D and a large number of it's child games) typically have acid as a breath weapon.
Water orbs require water.
Breath weapon comes from inside the dragon, where we can't target it. (no spark to shoot at)
We looked behind us shortly after walking through the pathway, and the portal we entered through was gone. There is no running and farming in the forest to get stronger.
I agree that fighting this dragon head on is likely to end in us dead.

---------------------

...Just a thought. We looked back when we entered the path, and found only more corridor. Perhaps We should check the other way before we wake the dragon.

Maybe it's my instincts as a Dark Souls player but you can't run here. Thin, straight corridors are absolute charnel houses against dragons (think of the bridge in DS); it's just going to funnel us into any breath/ranged attack fired down it. Trust me, nothing is more suspicious than a thin, straight corridor; if someone's stuck in one they invite ranged attacks like nobody's business.

Not running down the tunnel isn't exactly amazing either as you said, but it's slightly more amazing than being stuck in a tunnel with a breath attack incoming we cannot survive nor dodge. It's meagre as all hell but less meagre than that.

We did look back and couldn't see the entrance, so I'm not sure if we can retract our steps like that. I seriously doubt the dragon is going to let us poke it to death by trying to go in-out-in-out either. Best guess is either:

A) the dragon is only there to eat us if we get the riddles wrong
B) the riddles unlock spells required to give us a fighting chance, in which case... well, we have a fighting chance
C) the dragon gives us the spells instead, and isn't actually hostile (unless we poke it of course)

Admittedly, this is a dragon -- in a fantasy universe, no doubt, but there do not seem to be flammable materials coating the walls of the corridor. I may have missed it, but our enhanced healing factor likely also leads to increased stamina (though I don't like the odds of us outrunning a dragon).

We don't know much about the dragon's physiology, but assuming it needs to breath, and that its breath attacks are actually breath attacks, then it may not have great range, as getting air to move far away is very hard to do, even with a powerful diaphragm (like a powerful air cannon, for instance).

There's also the fact that fire tends to disperse rather quickly unless you have some sort of liquid or solid fuel very close to it, assuming the dragon does, of course, spew fire.

I'm honestly just hoping that the dragon is merely mischievous or wise, and riddles are the key to the spell-book... and that the dragon does not have the power of weather manipulation, void, and flame.

...though running may not be an option.

Hopefully it can't fit through the tunnel? :D

Edit: Maybe we should have headed back the way we came when deciding on an artifact. On the other hand, this temple does share several things in common with That Little Shop That Wasn't There Yesterday, and may have disappeared had we tried to return.

Magic is so annoying to formulate plans around.

...which is another reason I'm happy it seems to be our focus.

We can make tropes apply to us, dammit.

Bending reality in a universe with fate at the helm is immensely useful.

Interesting idea, but how would we use nothing on the tablets?

We can either do literally nothing or... the closing thing in our arsenal to nothing is fire.

But then how would it determine that we did nothing to the tablets, telepathic intent?

People, why are you trying to start the potential boss fight on the off chance the dragon is friendly and just wants to hear the answers?! Ness said the guardians are going to be the hardest things we could ever encounter, bar a 1 on an encounter roll, and these riddles are far too easy for that to be the challenge!

X] Look the dragon in the eyes
-[X] repeat the Riddle with the following answers at the end
-I am Clouds
I am nothing
I am Fire
[X] if it attacks fight

I think the original answer for number one is just cloud, I don't know whether or not the slight different matter

Erm people, we've been told the Dragon is asleep, do you want to wake it up so you can look it in the eyes? Or does it have transparent eyelids?
