A Villain In A World Of Heroes

[X] Play along with the Unicorn
-[X] Keep an eye/ear/nose out for hidden threats
[X] If the unicorn starts acting hostile, kill it and eat its heart.

Oh come on. This thing intentionally woke us up and wants to play. If it wanted to kill us, it probably already would have tried. Besides- Black Unicorns are incredibly rare. Might as well see what it wants before we do anything rash.

We want to kill it to eat its heart not because we think it will attack us
I DON"T want to kill it though. If we must, then it's heart would probably serve as a great boon, but it feels like there's too much going on with this Unicorn to just kill it right off. If WE came across IT, then sure, I would have been all for killing it and eating it, but no, it came to us. Not just through random wandering (maybe some, but not just), it stopped at our tree and woke us up specifically, and is all nice. Why? I want to know.

Majestic, awe-inspiring, and generating an aura of mystery

it starts to muzzle you, and you pet its head in return, feeling very joyful and content

Okay. This is what we know. We've got a Shiny version of a Unicorn that wants to play with us.
Things we don't know:
What are it's magical abilities?
What do Unicorns do when they encounter people?
Why are we being friendly with this unknown being in the middle of the Death Forest( I know that that isn't it's actual name, but it fits)?
And why are we feeling happy, when our arm stings, our father has been burned to death, we are out in the woods searching for the power to avenge his slaughter, and every inch of both us and our clothing is caked in blood?

And an even better question? Why are we feeling content?

The best answer is that it's using mind control. This thing is mind controlling us. And we know what to do with Mind controllers that we don't like.

[X] "Play along" with the Unicorn
-[X] Keep an eye/ear/nose out for hidden threats
-[X] Realize that you are happier than you really should be right now.
-[X] Steel yourself for it's inevitable betrayal. If you aren't completely sure that it's evil when it betrays you, it'll make it ten times harder to kill it before it can subjugate you mentally.
[X] If the unicorn starts acting hostile, kill it and eat its heart.

Just remembered we failed the Unicorn roll.

You know, it could also be that unicorns seek out those who are in depression, and either consume the ill feelings through proximity or just attempt to comfort them. It does not inherently mean it wants to mind control us and kill us.

Along the Colorado River or on Lake Tohoe? Or, maybe it's on Lake Las Vegas, if I am really lucky.:p

A failure of Idiom, but the intent remains.
I know that this is an original-ish setting, but everywhere else In literature black unicorns come up they're bad news.
To quote:
  • Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting: In order to create the Tome of the Unicorn (which was made of metal plates), a wizard named Shoon killed 12 unicorns and bathed the plates in their blood. This was considered an especially evil act in a world where evil deeds are quite common.
    • The same setting also gave us demonically tainted Black Unicorns, created by magically corrupting unicorns to the cause of evil.

I'm so racist, but I can't bring myself to care, because this is the internet and joking is a thing. Also, that unicorn isn't black, it's just a very, very dark grey. [/joking]
Fine, you've got me there, but I'm still watching that thing for the reasons I've stated. It's simply not trustworthy, considering our current circumstances.
