A Villain In A World Of Heroes

You heard 'er, people! Play this one smart. Yog levels of smart. Well, except when that would get us blown up, that is. Yog has a high Intelligence score, but I wouldn't trust some of his ideas in what is apparently a Hardcore mode quest.

The point of smacking it on the nose is that it's painful, disorienting and unexpected. Also it might give it a nosebleed, which will make it harder for it to find us by scent. That was my thought anyway.

It pretty much already knows where we are, and is currently soldiering on through the pain in it's best attempt to spite us. Smacking it will not Disorient it, and it's already murderously angry, so all that will do is make it leap or bite at us. And guess what? When that happens, we won't be able to defend unless we Somehow manage to get our sword back between us and the beast in the half a second before that happens. We're going to die. We're all going to die. ;-;

There is a key part of this argument that all of you are missing.

(Let the speculation begin!)

Hmmm, No plan survives contact with the enemy, and, while we do have super-duper-fast planning skills, we can't account for things we don't know about or anticipate. Therefore, there is no chance that this wolf will let us get off ANY of our attacks, much less the suicidal Nose-smacking. I will reiterate, we're going to die. We haven't even decided what we look like (Although there is a 4/3/1/1 in favor of picture 1 for now, with an additional argument about which picture we will eventually grow to look like)!

We're too young to die!

:c

No, what kind of GM would I be that I didn't even give you a chance in your first fight?

We don't need to kill it. It is already dieing. All we have to do is not be killed by it before it bleeds to death from the wound in its neck.

tl;dr don't fight, just dodge.

Umm, since we cut an artery in its neck, there's a fairly good chance that we cut a tendon or some muscle as well and it might not have full control of its head/bite? And should therefore be more weary of its claws?

Although probably this is correct.

As I remember, can't this thing take down trees? That was why we couldn't climb one and snipe earlier right?

You will notice that the current vote is basically shoot it more, and keep your sword up in case it tries something funny before it bleeds out. I'm just hyper-paranoid about it doing "Something Funny before it dies", because in this quest fate actively hates us and all.

Almost certainly It can slash, cut, break, bash, ram through, and eat trees, yes. Standing behind a tree isn't a perfect defense, but while he is blind, he won't necessarily know the tree is in the way. That is the crux of my proposal of running around and through trees in an attempt to injure and/or slow the wolf while we try to get out of reach until it dies.

I see that, yes, and that is why I don't like it. We don't need to focus on killing the enemy when it is already dying. We should be focusing on us not getting killed.

You would be Tracy Hickman.

He ran a Killer DM session at GenCon a few years ago. He was positively gleeful everytime he killed a player character.

If we want to destroy it's sense of smell, freezing it's nose would do that just fine, and probably deal more over all damage than we can with our sword. Especially if we try to smack it with the flat of the blade.

Part one of the Vote (not counting Nose-smacking of stupidity) Get cover. The whole point of shooting it is that it's a thing you can do while running away. People just tend to see the smacking bits and assume that the (original) plan is to melee with the beast when we have nothing to gain and everything to lose by doing so.

[ ] Get a tree between you and the wolf, if it's not so close that this becomes a quick-time event. A few seconds means a few more spells means a lot better chance of killing it without getting mauled.
[ ] Regardless of whether or not you've gotten cover, shoot as many bolts as you can at it's joints, preferably the front elbows*. It can't lung if it's crippled
[ ] Simultaneously with the last point, bring your sword between you and it, angled for maximum penetration if it lunges, because it can't smell how your sword is angled. Better it dead from thrusting itself upon your blade and lying on you than it not dead and just slashed a little. Dead can be wriggled out from under.

Nowhere in there does it say melee with the murderbeast. Just that maybe you should prepare a defense in case it melees you/us.

I never assumed we were going to melee the thing.
We don't know if we can cast while running, or whether we need one, both, or no hands to cast. @Dark Ness would need to clarify that before we start assuming we can cast and run or cast while doing swordplay.

My proposal was entirely about not getting hit at all, and staying out of range until it dies from the gaping wound in it's neck.

Also of note: this thing is twice our size in height. Based on that the wolf is almost certainly at least 20-30 ft in length. I don't think a 14-year old girl whos only form of physical training was leatherworking, has the endurance to survive the weight of a giant wolf landing on her, or the strength to move it enough to get out if she did.

@Dark Ness Does it still have ice blinding its eyes after the fireball hit it?

You can, although you won't be as accurate and you don't need hands, but they are a bit of a crutch (one hand works just as well as two though, and you can hold the sword in one hand).

You hit it's feet, so yes.

20-30 feet... You know, when you put it like that, standing our ground if it leaps at us sounds kind of (Who am I kidding?) incredibly stupid now.

New vote:

[X] Get a tree between you and the wolf, if it's not so close that this becomes a quick-time event. A few seconds means a few more spells means a lot better chance of killing it without getting mauled. Dodging is your only defense. Do it.
[X] Regardless of whether or not you've gotten cover, shoot as many bolts as you can at it's joints, preferably the front elbows*. It can't lung if it's crippled. Still be ready to dodge, although this should be happening in conjunction with (1).
[X] At the same time as the other two points, bring your sword into an optimal position out of the way of any debris. It'd be awfully awkward if we tripped because our sword got snagged while trying to dodge Truck-wolf, but dropping it in the forest of death where we might lose it for any number of reasons would be pretty bad.

Edit: because I don't care about the rest, but I do want to at least focus on dodging

Damn am I late to this. If I had gotten here early enough, I would have proposed a Nanoha tactic with the wolf, and have it eat our victims enemies after we tame it, so we would have a badass pet we can have fucked up conversations with. Oh well.

Plan "Get the hell out of dodge"
[X] Fire Nova Glaciums at the wolf whenever and wherever you get the chance, so long as doing so doesn't impede your own movement. It freezes on contact, so that will slow it down while damaging and/or distracting it.
[X] Constantly use trees as cover. Even if the wolf can break through the trees, it's still going to take damage and get slowed down. Plus, momentum is a bitch when you're trying to do tight turns.

Long term plan "Patience"
[X] Heroes have absurd luck on their side. Keep this in mind when plotting your revenge, and take the time to account for all possible variables. Remove luck from your plans as much as possible. Seriously. Don't be a Bond Villain.
[X] Vengeance is important, which is why rushing it is only more likely to breed failure. You need to carefully plot out your plans, not rush out like an idiot and get killed. Impatience is a waste of time.
[X] Training. Constantly improve your skills. Ultimately, the only thing you can truly rely on is yourself. Never neglect your own abilities.

I'm aiming for a "Patient" trait with this.

Sorry, but that is not valid. This vote is ONLY for how you are dealing with the wolf.

Right, I have left this open for quite a while, so can I get a vote tally.
