technically, the problem wouldn't be watching those you love grow old and die, the problem would be doing it over and over and over again. To the point where you eventually decide it's probably better to just not make any new connections to people so you don't have to go through that again. Immortal planeswalkers had a habit of getting more and more distant and less concerned with mortal affairs as they get older. The eldest planeswalkers are just plain nuts.
An endless lifetime of new friends seems pretty great to me. I've drifted apart from people before. I've had loved ones die before. The overlap between friends I have now and friends I had even three years ago is pretty small.

Just because they go away doesn't mean I no longer enjoy making new ones. Besides, Hiver and Dawn aren't even limited to one world. They could do anything they wanted. He could hike the circumference of a dyson sphere. Find a dead planet and use his life magic to create his own crazy fantasy world. Master a hundred and eight forms of martial arts just for the hell of it.

It's not like he can run out of stuff to do.

You know the immortal thing is one of those "sucks but err upside outweighs the downside" thing. Personally I think the Highlander TV series did it very well, showing that the Immortals hated watching the people they loved die, but very few of them actually wanted to be mortal. Unlike the stereotypical "Vampire wants to be human again" bollocks that was around at the same time *cough* Forever Knight *cough*.

Highlander dealt with it more the "one year of love is worth ten of pain" theory. Even Methos, who had sixty eight goddamn wives over five thousand years didn't want to die, not really, there was always something to see, something to explore.

If someone offered to make me ageless and immortal, I'd take it. I'd miss my family and friends like hell, but the chance to see mankind set out into the Stars? To read all the wonderful works of fiction yet to be written? To listen to all the music yet to be played? To see new vistas? I'd take it.
I agree with this, but it still something you have to deal with emotionally. That the upsides outweigh the downsides doesn't mean there are no downsides. See it as getting rid of your wisdom teeth - its beneficial, but that doesn't mean you aren't allowed to complain about the pain.

That Dawn needs a few hours alone to deal with it isn't unrealistic.

I like to think that the Blind Eternities are the fast but dangerous method that was never really intended to be used that way. Then you have the lengthy and difficult rituals that rip open safe passage. The method that gods and demons use. Then you have the freaky natural rifts that pop up, like the Hellmouth. Quicker than rituals and safer than the Blind Eternities, though not by much.

if the multiverse is infinite shouldn't there be near infinite number of ways to travel it as well as an infinite number of worlds you cant reach though the Blind Eternities
.. yes but in the fact it is infinite, there are also infinite worlds we can reach through the blind eternities (or a variant of every one we can think of at the very least)

The Arnold Judas Rimmer approach is only proven to work on the minor local death of Red Dwarf, trying that on another Death is likely not going to work what so ever.

No known planeswalker can be described as 'High Tier', the ones that are high tier would be indescribably, thus, the only ones we see are the Lowest of the Low tier ones.

When you play a Magic: The Gathering game, YOU are the high tier planswalker. The ones in card form are the low tier ones.

No we have heard of them. some of their names are chronus, Q, tzeentch, slenderman.:p
No idea who Chronus is.
Q can be defeated by blowing up a couple Omega particles and shooting him with a revolver.
Tzeentch is a Chaos god not a planeswalker.
And Slenderman is immeasurable so we don't know if he's omnipotent or defeat able by mortal means, thus you cant actually say anything about him.
All around, none of those guys are really all that threatening.
Although I assume you weren't being serious and didn't mean to come off as 'Your such a moron I just feel compelled you make fun of you!' but rather as 'JK'.

ya I was just making a joke.
by the way this is who chronos is:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronos
(misspelled originally sorry)

Clearly Slenderman is an old-school Plainswalker who has way WAY too much black mana...or has just gone crazy since he's one of the oldest.

Heh, I'll do it. Stuck in Buffalo for the last four hours waiting for a bus that comes in two hours, with no coffee and some scientific paper to work on, surrounded by a dozen plushies. What could go wrong with the beta? ^^

I studied the ruins of some kind of troll building as the caravan followed the road past the sandstone pillars.

If there was time, I would really have liked to come back to this place and do a proper dig. There are archeologists that would give their left nut to find this kind of thing.

I did study archeology at one point even if I never finished, I was good at the practical stuff... and there this stuff was just sitting in the Jungle.

With as much troll ruins as there was around here, Stranglethorn must have been one massive troll city at one point.

A entire fallen civilization.

I glanced over my shoulder at the blue troll driving the cart behind Dawn's kodo. Wonder what they used to be?

"...o what do you think?" Dawn finished and glanced back at me "Are you even listening?" she then asked as I turned back forward again.

"Oh...eh..." I started.

Nope. No I wasn't.

"Sorry, what did you say?" I asked with a small frown. I didn't think I was that deep in thought.

"I asked, do you want to check out the ruins when we stop?" She sighed.

"You have been watching them each time we pass one. We are leaving the Vale in just a couple of days, so you would lose the chance later."

She really is observant. I need to remember that.

"I could always come back later. Not like I could do a proper dig in just a couple of hours." I said, "I wouldn't mind having a look around though if there are some close to the camp."

Speaking of which, researching Westeros history would also be pretty awesome, not that it would be easy with all the attention I keep getting there.

Fuck it. I'll wait until they reach modern age and then read their history books. I'm immortal, I can be patient.

I took another picture of a pictogram on the wall of the ruin after pulling some climbing plants off it.

We were about a hour ride down the road from the caravan camp. The camp was set three hours before dark so all preparations had time to finish before then such as wood gathering.

Which meant I had a hour worth of time to pick around in this place until we needed to get back onto the Kodo to return to the camp.

"Do you have any idea what those say?" Dawn asked as she traced her finger at the pictogram "They remind me a bit about Aztec markings."

I shook my head happily and took another picture "I have no idea." I said with a grin "I could make some guesses, but they would most definitely be wrong. Even guessing at things as cave paintings you will most likely be wrong at the meaning of them. These are way more complex." When I get back to Sunnydale, I need to see what the local archeology division on the university think of these, just for fun.

"This one look like somebody with a club, hitting somebody else in the head." she said and tilted her head "Well...at least if you squint a bit."

I shook my head in amusement before I looked around, spotting something half buried in the ground a bit further away and I walked over to dig it up with the help of a stick. It turned out to be a small statuette of a tiger.

I did quick scan and when I didn't detect any magic on it, I picked it up "Have you thought about what we were talking about?"

Dawn leaned her back against the stones "I did...I talked with Master Cloudsong. He had no problems with you teaching me as long as it don't affect my normal training or other duties." she then frowned slightly "He looked amused when I mentioned you."

Shrugging I stood up, putting the tiger statuette in my bag. That's going on a shelf when I find myself somewhere to live semi-permanently.

"I have no idea. I caught the same kinds of looks lately from several different people." I said as I shook my head.

That's when I noticed movement in the foliage by the archway into the ruins.

I immediately dove towards Dawn "Get down!" I yelled.

Dawn hit the ground a moment after me and then we were up to our necks in trolls as I threw my shield up to cover both me and Dawn.

Ok, it might not have been that many, maybe ten in total. But the moment they popped out of fucking nowhere, there seemed to be more of them.

I slowly stood up, watching them. When the shield went up they held back, studying us in return.

Most of them were green and blue with face painting, carrying spears, axes or staffs.

"If you wish us to leave, we will leave. This is your area, I respect that. There is no need for violence." I said, speaking as clearly as I could in Orcish as I spread the shield to cover down "Stand up slowly, no sudden moves." I then added in English.

As I felt her get up behind me I started to slowly back away from them.

They really was no threat to me. They were armed with stone and wood weapons for crying out loud!

The lead troll branished his staff, yelling something before hitting the shield with a bolt of lightning. It crackled across the surface before grounding into the ground with a hissing sound.

I started to move a bit quicker. I actually felt the shield weakening at that hit...I could take several more with just as much mana as there was in the shield, but that was still impressive.

The blue leading troll waved his staff once more, hitting the shield with a ball of fire and I glanced back at Dawn "Have something to drive them back?"

She shook her head, looking stressed but like she was keeping her head in check "I can throw lightning or fire...I'm mostly good at healing!"

I nodded "I am also a bit short on non lethal spells. So how about we get a bit creative. How fast can you get to the Kodo and get it moving?"

"Couple of seconds. He is tied up around the corner." She said as she swallowed.

"Good. When I say go, you run."

"I'm not leaving you!" she exclaimed.

I gave her a small grin over my shoulder as another spell hit my shield, this one some kind of ice magic followed my a simple thrown spear "These guys are not a real threat, I just don't want to hurt them. Now...go!"

I said and she ran for it as I shifted the shield, forming a half sphere with it instead of a full sphere to let her our before I borrowed a trick from Mary's book.

Bands of white mana flew at the trolls as I dug into my white mana one more. They dove out of the way, trying to not get hit but the spells followed them, binding their hands and ankles together.

"I'll cancel the spell once we are on our way. Do not follow us." I told them as they yelled and pulled at the white light binding them in place.

I then turned to join Dawn, climbing onto the Kodo "Let's go."

She quickly nodded and got the Kodo moving faster than I thought the damn thing could move as I took a slow breath, trying to get rid of my adrenaline.

Multiple wars and I still react like this to a surprise fight.

Bloody hell.

We had been moving for five minutes when I noticed that Dawn was shivering.

"Dawn, are you ok? Did they hit you with something?" I quickly asked, checking her over. Poison darts. Should have thought about that!

She shook her head "N-no. I'm fine. I-I didn't expect a fight. I haven't been in one since Sunnydale."

I sighed "I'm sorry. It was my fault. I shouldn't have dragged you out to those ruins."

"We knew there was danger. I just..." she started and then sighed "They tried to kill us. They were people. Not monsters. People!"

That's might be the hardest thing to learn. Sometimes there is no difference.

"Yeah." I said with a another sigh as the Kodo slowed down to it's normal speed "Just people.".

AN// Big thanks to Rufus Shinra for betaing this part.

I hate to say it, but you need more black.

Honestly you've been behaving a touch light on black for some time now. Even back before you got into land based magic you were more ruthless. Black is needed to let you do things that must be done. To much drives you insane, but to little renders you nonfunctional.

I too, am of the opinion that once the lightning bolts and fire balls come out, murder is less a case of wrong or right and more of a matter of practical discretion.
Less so when you're trespassing on their ancient land and so on.

If you're going to kill a lot of people, let it be for better reasons than 'I was on their property, stealing their stuff, when they attacked me. For absolutely no reason. Honest.'

And murdering everyone who looks at you funny won't have any consequences at all, I'm sure.

But this is Spacebattles, People wanting to act like mass murdering sociopaths is as common as sand on a beach.

Those trolls were no threat at all to Winter, he was on their land, taking their relics, and they probably didn't even understand him, being an isolated jungle tribe, I'm sure that their ability to learn different languages is rather limited.

I have to ask about the psychological effects of being so long lived.

Now Hiver might have strong morals, and always try to be nice and reasonable.

But I have to admit if I was in his position.

Well let me sum it up this way.

More POWER! I have = Less Patience I have for your shit until I Burninate your village.

Though I imagine at some point I would become so Invincible that I would take the diplomatic route just to switch things up.
Most people would call that a bad thing.

They may be trolls, but they're people too, with families and lives of their own, just trying to protect their lands and drive out the outsiders who have invaded it.

Maybe they've done things that deserve being killed for, but Winter didn't know, and until he does, he shouldn't kill people just because they make threatening noises at him or are inconvenient.

It's called a slippery slope for a reason.

Crap, I just noticed, he took the Tiger statue with him. That's going to bite him later.
Probably not, since it was out in the open in one of their unoccupied ruins (there would have been evidence if it was, like fire pits, tents, supplies, etc scattered around), it is highly unlikely that it held any real significance to the trolls.

Or at least no enough to try to take on a large and very well defended caravan that will be leaving the vale in a few days, taking them beyond their reach.

They'll most likely grumble about stupid outsiders on their land and go home, while Winter and Dawn go on to their next antagonist.

I'm not saying killing was necessary the answer here, but it's more a general behavior thing. He's being very slow in his personal power acquisition. Not just more lands, but also developing new spells. He didn't do anything to dissuade his attackers outside of using a shield and trying to talk (which he gave up on at that).

To put it bluntly he lacks a certain edge. Call it ruthlessness, call it conviction, or even disregard. Regardless, he's fettering himself to the point where it looks like it's going to effect his ability to deal with violent confrontations, and that's going to be a problem in this setting. I mean he drained himself to the point he apparently couldn't effectively fight back by just standing there and taking it! What if they had another group nearby? Or what if the caravan came under another attack, or the Trolls had a viable way to pursue?

It's great to show mercy, and to spend effort to spare other's lives. Even those who are traditionally your enemy. However if it's getting to the point where your disabling yourself to the point of vulnerability in a dangerous setting like this, while you have a dependent nearby?

Yeah, he needs more black.

This is only the second hostile encounter he has had here, the first was resolved diplomatically and the second he just disabled peacefully. We haven't seen him be put up against the wall yet. Also to claim lands he needs one of each and so he'll have to scout out as it's been over a decade since he played warcraft in universe, just claiming lands regardless of land balance would mess him up in the head.

While on the new spell front ... I think he's still treating it as a nice long holiday in his head. He might be teaching Dawn, but it's more of a relaxed teaching. He needs a giant spider incident to shake him out of his arrogance and such.
