Are we in danger?? I thought we were the danger...

I had this question, and received some answers.

IIRC, it is basically almost upon us. We had spent something like two weeks on the temple and vacation, and from the point of us arriving at the temple for the first time, the end of lunar month was 16 days away.

At this point, I am shooting for the pillars. Just get a week of temple+ grade training and power up with long-term buffs. That'll sort us out, and leave us with a progression-oriented EFB on our hands, too.
So if we can get 25 arete by next update we can probably use pillars basically instantly and then fully heal all of Hunger's conditions and start training with things like stranglethorn fights.

More or less. We are going to argue a lot about things we'll want to get, I suspect, but regardless of what exactly wins, we are going to leave at least order of magnitude stronger than we went in.

At this point, I must turn back to the darkness of Eldendross away from the light of the Sky, simply because Evening Sky EFB Pillars, the thing I had been lowkey pushing since Cut Through won (and started pointing the value of even before that) is actually within reach.

If a true S A V E option was in the running, I would've voted for it. Alas.

[X] Evening Sky: Shadowlord

Flip flop floop flap.

Less characters and Ring Heist ahoy!

[X] Edeldross Adept
[X] +1 pick below

I too must abandon my position if we can get Pillars and trigger it in the immediate term.

I don't think Pillars would give enough immediate power. Especially because its full grinding ability wouldn't be online immediately and we'd have to spend effort to calibrate it:
Pillars doesn't start off with all its functions perfectly calibrated, though! As the text says, you have to craft them!

Also, Vanreir-tier opponents are probably outside of your guys' risk tolerance...
Compared to something simple and strong like Once and Future it's at a serious disadvantage. It's far from something that gives the power we need. We should spend the 7 Arete now for that.

Fuck passing up another ES upgrade, this laterally expands our capabilities in ways that we badly need. Except for the last benefit I think Edeldross Adept's all shit we can learn to do anyway, we're just paying to speed things up?

As Rihaku likes to say, the one of fastest ways to accelerate your growth curve is to simply start further on it. We could learn more magnitude in the future, but we could also be leveraging the magnitude we've already gotten here in order to be even further ahead of using the extra room to buy up other things.

I'm tentatively in favor of this "Pillar Rush" Strat. If we get it online fast enough, we'll get seven free days of grinding and full condition clearing. Even if it takes time to calibrate it, a couple of two-pick or three-pick fights adds up quickly. Even if we only get three days of full functionality, with the ability to full heal after each fight and do multiple fights per day, we could perhaps pick up in the vicinity of 12 picks (two 2-pick fights per day for three days) relatively safely. If we're willing to shoulder some risk our growth rate could skyrocket.

We'd get a week to train in safety and healing all our conditions as a side effect.

Remember we've literally spent less than a week in the temple and grew this much.
I don't know if we'd get that immediately, is the point. If we have to spend most of out time actually building the things we want first we may have little time to take advantage of them immediately; and we can't exactly wait another 21 days. It's a gamble. I don't want to take those odds, especially because we don't know right now and if we commit to it Rihaku might clarify I'm right and utterly wreck our chances. Especially since it would already be fighting against the uphill battle that would be the immediate power of Once and Future. It's a needles risk for me, when we can just get Stealth now.

We'll manage. We are jumping an order of magnitude of power what, every three days of proper fighting? Every day assuming actually good circumstances and arete-spending?

Hunger will manage juuuust fine with that much slack on the timeline, especially if we queue up not an exotic pick, but something simple, like straight rank.

I don't think there is enough support for the 3x blade EFB's, we'll probably have to choose between ring and pillars. If everyones scared of ring and pillars is almost online due to the phase of the moon, we pretty much have to be ready to take it, or commit to ignoring EFBs until something new pops up for sky or ring.

Alternatively, you could go along with the growing plan to take Edeldross Adept and use the saved Arete to rush Pillars of Creation. If you really love the Evening Sky, wouldn't it be better to shoot for an Evening Sky 25 Arete option? You could take Shadowlord and try to get Pillars later... But the phase of the moon where Pillars is active is coming soon. If we miss that window Pillars drops in viability severely, so if you want an Evening Sky EFB it may be best to not spend 5 more then you need to now.

Also, Edeldross Adept might be getting us stuff we'd eventually get anyway, but it gets us a lot. And it's only two Arete.

Everyone is so sure of their commitment to the balanced special advancement, I wonder if that will remain so when the devil starts whispering in your ears...

An important part of getting what you want is to avoid temptations to the contrary. We might be much closer to Pillars with Adept; but we also risk losing it essentially forever if the reality of our situation catches up with us. Spend now, and delay the EFB choice for after the Temple, and we will have much more freedom in going the way the thread actually seems to want. We already did this song and dance with the vote for Uttermost before; where Rihaku stressed heavily we should take the option with the most power even if it is distasteful. And should he do that again, I don't think he will recommend Pillars, to say the least.

We didn't even vote for the optimal social buy for the risky social approach and expect to have the luxury of not spending on immediate power? Seems extremely optimistic. Next update seems like it will end with us in the middle of the inner layer, probably exposed and fighting if we don't perfectly land the tough social approach. I don't see getting pillars in that situation.

I'm sure Hunger thinks he's best at everything, but don't forget the assassin merc's stealth field is AoE, and we can buff her agility in turn. We can go in the the stealth mission with her us and Gisena as opposed to a solo Hunger.

Here are all the Forebear's EFBs that we know of... so far.

Final Form, Once and Future, Cut Through, All-Defeating Stance, Foe-Defeating Stance

As for the Tyrant, he never even unlocked or mastered the Hunger Ring. The ring unlocks Dead But Dreaming but I doubt the Tyrant mastered that, since we haven't gotten any mention of him using Outer Sorcery. He had other artifacts so maybe he had a sword EFB of his own, but if so it certainly wasn't as good as Cut Through.

No wonder the Tyrant wasn't willing to use the Forebear's sword himself.
