From Zero to Hero!
Genma went on and on in his tirade, sometimes even repeating himself and mostly dressing you three down for your recklessness, pointing out how you left the clients alone when there would always have a potential third ambush in the making, or with you three fighting an enemy that was too stronger for yourselves and thus becoming a distraction to those that could actually fight on that level.
It felt like he was chewing on you three for hours, but in actually only a few minutes passed before he took a deep breath to calm himself.
"Yet", he said after he finished, "thank you for coming help me. It certainly helped me deal with Raidou and to be honest I wasn't one hundred percent sure I could have dealt with him, not without becoming too damaged and leaving you three to fend for yourselves and possibly vulnerable to another ambush at some point. You did good, just don't let it get to your heads. Now, do any of you have anything else to say before we return to our clients?"

The caravan was attacked by jonin level ninja, and a smuggler is suspicious regardless of that fact. Deal with the smuggler and clear the mystery.

Discreetly clicking yes you nodded to yours sensei, "I think I have something to mention, but it's better if I talk with you alone. At least while we're on enemy territory."
Genma raised an eyebrow before crossing his fingers. "Kagebunshin no jutsu."
Another Genma poped up on your side before he went with the others back to the caravan. Looking up at his head you see that his level was the same, but his title was 'Kagebunshin'. "So, talk. What do you want to talk with me?"
"One of the merchants is a smuggler. I'm not sure if he's currently smuggling something right now, or if that's just his normal occupation and he isn't doing anything right now, but since we were attacked I decided that now would be a good time to tell you."
"And you know that... how again?"
"I... can kind of see the limited past of people I see. If my abilities recognize that person as stronger than me I can't see anything past their names, but if they are weaker I can get some information out of it, and he was a smuggler."
"Why didn't you told me that before?" He said before slapping his face, "no, nevermind, of course you can't say that out loud without a good reason. Thanks for sharing that with me though. Is that all?"
You nod, and you two go back to the caravan before the clone dispel and Genma gives a nod towards you. So somehow he got the information you said to his clone without talking with it? You just thought his clone was unusually intelligent. Neat.
Once all merchants and passengers were accounted for, you all resumed your walk towards your destination.

On the last day of travel, Genma pulled you three to talk. "I came with the information that we have a smuggler in this caravan. His name is Jun and currently we have no proof that he is carrying any illegal good right now, so we need to be discreet in this investigation. Well, technically the investigation is already over, but I will use this opportunity as an exercise on your intelligence gathering abilities. You three need to figure out if he's smuggling something to the next town before we arrive on our destination, which will be tomorrow. Any plans for that?"
"Won't it be suspicious if we start investigating like that? Won't he run if he's a smuggler and we suspect anything?" Asked Ayaned from her side and Genma nodded.
"That's true, but if he runs away you can consider it a mission successful because it will allow us to interrogate him and while I don't know any mind reading jutsus he's only a civilian and should speak quickly under pressure."
And by pressure he means torture. The key is to give enough pain for him to beg to stop, and not overdo it and breaking the target in process. That, and to do it away from other civilian witness. "Of course, we will only interrogate him if he's being suspicious. So long as you don't overtly accuse him of anything or do something too outlandish, you are free to do whatever you want and I will cover your tracks. "
You three nodded and went back to camp.

If only I could have done things differently
This would be easy for us to do with observe, though it may not be as easy as we think, I doubt he would let an object he is smuggling be next to the other people in the caravan if they are innocent in this incident and we already checked all of the other passengers with observe so I doubt something different will pop up again.
With our ability to henge to a bird we can easily just shadow him. So I say do this seems the most like to give information.
