You stand frozen for a long moment that stretches out much further than you know it's supposed to. You can feel your chest tighten a little and the spiral of anxiety starting in your head. You take a breath and try to center yourself. You don't have time to deal with this right now. Even with as much as you want to listen to what's going to be said, you don't have the time. There's already too much going on today and this drama can wait until after you've made sure that your club's presentation goes off without a hitch. So instead of leaning against the wall by the corner (even if you really want to) you turn and head the other way back towards the room where you're handling the haunted house preparations, shutting anything else you might overhear out of your mind.
You make it back and get into your wispy costume--you're holding off on the mask because it's July and you know you're going to be sweating enough later in the day. Thankfully, with the windows covered it makes for a cooler space inside the room. You've set up a little table outside where people can be 'welcomed' to the haunted house before stepping through the door of the classroom and into the little foyer where you'll be waiting to point people in the right direction. Cloth partitions that circle the room in a maze-like circuit, carefully directed lights, a fog machine, hanging 'guts' (just cooked pasta dangling on strings), and a other props and set dressing make for a pretty creepy experience--at least, you hope so. You're checking over a few more things when Erika comes sweeping in, arms full of last minute props and whatnot. She smiles at you as she hurries past, cheeks a little pink, and vanishes into the back before you can say anything. Weird.
You turn back to your own work with a shrug and a sigh. At least she's smiling, right? You study your mask, happy again with the choice you made. In the low light of the entrance, it'll be the perfect spooky welcome. Honestly, you're glad the festival is here because it means summer holidays are about to start and you can take a break from club stuff. You'll have homework to worry about and then there's the camping trip but it'll still be a break of worrying about schoolwork and entrance exams. And you are looking forward to the camping trip, really...
Your train of thought is interrupted when you hear Erika's voice from somewhere in the maze you've all built.
"Hey Hanako? Can you help me with something?" You blink and head towards the dark space that Erika vanished into.
"Yeah. What's up?"
"Come here. I just need your help with this." You roll your eyes a little and follow the switchback from the foyer into the first 'room' and come up a little short as you realize that this room is completely dark. You grope forward for a moment, grumbling under your breath.
"Erika, it's pitch black in here. How am I supposed to help you if I can't see--" Your question gets cut off as there's suddenly a smaller body in front of you. Arms wrap around your neck and tug at you as stumble, keeping you from stepping back.
"What--?" You're very confused right now. You have a brief moment to acknowledge that this is very warm and very soft and then you feel the press of lips against yours. It's clumsy and a little awkward but when you try to return the kiss it's pretty much exactly the same. Before you think better of it, you wrap your arms around Erika (it has to be Erika) and tug her a little closer in the dark, your heart pounding and head spinning. The kiss lingers a few moments longer and then (disappointingly) she pulls away.
"...Wow," you mumble. It's a little giddy and little surprised and little pure shell-shock. That was your first kiss, like, ever. And it felt really good. Erika's head is nudging against your collar bone and she's saying something to you. You try to focus.
"Sorry if I've been kind of a jerk," Erika murmurs to you. "I... " She pauses for a moment, trying to put her words together. "I was being stupid. So I hope that makes it up to you a little." You're glad it's dark because otherwise she would see how red you are. Or you might see how red she is. So maybe it works out okay. You can feel a faint purr starting to rumble involuntarily out of your chest and she giggles and presses her ear against your collarbone for a moment to listen.
You don't really know what else to say, so you just nod. Words, Hanako. Use your words. You fumble for a moment, then manage to find your footing.
"Don't worry about it." You bite your lip. "...What brought this on?"
"Um. Akane kind of cornered me," she coughs. "Kinda laid it out for me and said that I should just kiss you already, so..." There's a brief spike of panic in you.
"I--I didn't tell her you were my girlfriend," you say hurriedly. Erika snorts. "I know that. Silly. I know you wouldn't. She said you told her you had a girlfriend and she kinda. Put it together from there." You giggle, trying to stay quiet.
"And I thought we were being super subtle." Erika shoves you when you speak.
"We're not, you just gave her a lot of clues. Not your fault and I'm not mad. I just.. I'm kinda glad she came to talk some sense into me before I made things too weird." You smile.
"Me too," you agree and then she kisses you again and you don't really want to bother saying much any more. Luckily, there's enough presence of mind between the two of you to keep you both from just staying there until things get under way. Also Osamu arrives in costume is looking for you in the front room, so the two of you come piling out, you looking embarrassed and Erika a little flushed but nothing too obvious. You hope. Soon enough everyone piles in and there's a last briefing before everyone goes to their places and the haunted house is set into motion. After that, the day is kind of a blur, but the whole thing ends up being a success, which is a relief. You had a reputation for the club to live up to, but everyone seems to have a good time and when the day ends all of you can clean up together, laugh and smile, and congratulate each on another year in the books as a success.
At the end of it, you're all gathered in the now empty classroom, props packed away and stuffed back into boxes for the next year. You're still floating a little bit from that kiss earlier and you can't help the huge smile that's on your face as you look over the club. Everyone is sweaty and tired and Osamu still has stage makeup around his eyes but your enthusiasm seems to be infecting them. They all return your smile with their own and you take a breath to address them.
"Good job everyone! I think that's been the best I've seen it since I joined the club. Everyone did great. Thanks so much for making my last year so amazing." You bow a little. "You've all worked really hard so I think now we can go enjoy our summer holidays without any regrets."
"You make it sound like we're going off to battle, Hanako," Osamu quips with a laugh. "So serious." Miyako giggles and Hikari elbows her a little to try and get her to quiet down.
"You two. She's trying to be earnest about this," Hikari grumbles. It doesn't bother you, though (nothing can bother you right now). You laugh along with them.
"It's okay! I guess I do sound pretty serious," you say and rub the back of your neck. "But I think it's because I really do love this club and I'm happy that people are still joining and that we're still having fun. So. Thank you all. I know we still have a lot of time left in the school year, so I won't get too sappy on you yet. We're cleaned up. Let's get out of here and enjoy the weekend. It's officially summer after school gets out, after all." Well, kind of. Everyone was to be here on Monday for a last day of class and being assigned summer homework but it barely counts. Everyone lets out a tired, half-sarcastic cheer and everyone starts to split up to enjoy what remains of the cultural festival and wind down for the summer.
Personally you just want to go home and sleep the whole weekend. Erika is tagging along with you as you head for the school gate. It feels really nice now, honestly. Now that all that weird misunderstanding seems to be out of the way. You pause at the gate, and you feel Erika's hand brush yours, fingers curling around yours for a brief moment. You smile.
"I'll see you on Monday? We can like. Grab something to eat after school gets out," you ask with a tilt of your ears.
"Yeah. Yeah, I think that'd be good." You desperately want to give her another kiss but there are people around and... you're not sure you're ready for that to be a public thing. With a last squeeze of each other's hands, the two of you separate. The path home seems especially bright today and it's probably not just the summer sunlight. You open the door with a cheery call of "I'm home!" and toe your shoes off before strolling into the living room. No sign of dad (he must be upstairs working or something) but Mom is here, sitting at the dining room table with her laptop working on something. She looks up as you enter and smiles.
"Hanako! There you are. How did the haunted house go?" Oh good. A normal conversation.
"It was good! It went really well. I think the club is in good hands for the future," you reply and flop down on the couch with a groan. "I'm just glad it's done though, the last couple months have been nothing but stress about it."
"You're hard worker. That's why." Mom laughs. "Oh, by the way, I was thinking we'd go out to the country over the summer holidays and see your grandparents." Your ears perk up and you sit up on the couch. Your mom's parents live out in the countryside in a lovely old house and visiting them is always nice, if only because grandma stuffs you with food.
"Oh yeah? When?" Your head tilts.
"I was thinking we'd go for the week between the 14th and the 21st," she says with a smile. Your heart leaps up into your throat and a spike of anxiety stabs you right in the chest, leaving a cold, sinking feeling. That encompasses the weekend you're supposed to go on the camping trip. Maybe... maybe she just forgot.
"Um, I'm supposed to go help with the camping trip on that weekend, remember? The 19th through the 21st?" You try to sound more nonchalant than you feel but you're not sure that if you really manage it.
"Oh, was it? But I already told mom and dad we'd be coming..." She sighs and rests her chin in her hand. "Don't you think family is more important than that, Hanako?" You swallow. Is this on purpose? She must be doing this on purpose. Pushing you back into a corner where you have to be the good kid and you don't want to disappoint anyone. Oh God, what do you do now?
[ ] You're angry. God, you are so angry. You were having a good day up until now and now she has to spring THIS crap on you? You're going on the camping trip and you don't care about going to visit your grandparents or about being the good kid! You're tired of being the good kid. You already made plans and she's not going to take that away from you!
[ ] No. Hanako, stay calm. You have to be reasonable about this. Just... try and explain it to her. You already made a commitment and you need to keep it. You're sorry if you'll miss your grandparents this year but you told Live Out Loud you'd be there and you can't unreliable. Surely she'll listen to reason.
[ ] Actually, she's right. Family is important. You don't see your grandparents a lot and it's good for you to see them while you still can. Besides, you're a good kid, right? You should be a good daughter and go see your grandparents. Maybe Live Out Loud can find someone more reliable to do this for them because you definitely have familial obligations that take precedence.
