[X] Be straight about it with her. Tell her the truth, even if it hurts.
"It's not like that at all."
Ritsuko keeps walking, but your words garner her full attention. Her eyes narrow up at you, "What do you mean?"
You sigh with a shake of your head, "Ritsuko, tell me; Do you know what it's like to go hungry for weeks at a time?"
"What does that-"
"Cause I do."
That stops her in her tracks.
Figuratively and literally.
She stops walking making you get a few steps ahead of her. You stop there and turn around to see her surprised face. She shakes her head, confounded expression still clear on her face, "Wait...really?"
"Had to learn what it was like," you look down at the ground, memories of that time coming to you unbidden, "It came in handy when I couldn't scrounge up enough loose change to to buy something for Yamato and me. Most of the time it was only enough for one of us. Then there was constantly moving from place to place trying to find somewhere to sleep. Usually it was an underpass next to a river, some stairs beneath an apartment complex, or an empty bus stop."
You wave for her to keep walking with you. She does so, never once taking her eyes off you while her face is a mask of intense concentration. You continue when the two of you are moving again, "We had to get up real early, so we could reach the alleyways before anyone else did. Was one of the main ways we got yen to buy stuff with."
You point down a nearby alley. It's dark, grimy, and filled with discarded trash. You chuckle, "Kind of looked like this one."
Ritsuko blinks twice. Then she slowly shakes her head, "That's...damn. Hayato...I...I had no idea. For a high school kid to live like that-"
"Oh no. We lived like that until I turned fourteen."
"WHAT?!"
She steps in front of you, eyes wider than ever and looking you up and down, "You...you lived like...like that as a child?!"
You nod your head, face turning grim, "When I said I didn't know my parents, I meant they weren't even there to take care of us. I had to keep Yamato safe all by myself, while still making sure both of us went to school."
"Well...why didn't you go to an orphanage?"
"Didn't trust places like that. Figured they would separate me and Yamato. Couldn't let that happen," you avoid letting any malice in your voice leak out. You...didn't really like the idea of not being there for Yamato when he was still growing up.
You shake the negative emotions off then start walking with Ritsuko again, "So, like I said, we lived like that until I turned fourteen. After that, I managed to grow tall enough that I could fool a construction foreman into believing I was sixteen. Gave me a job and I started working from that day on. Until I started going to Raijin."
"And that's where you started being able to do your own stuff, right?"
The smile on her face swiftly vanishes as you shake your head in response, "Nah. After that I had to save up all my money to get an apartment for the two of us. Then most of my money went to making sure neither of us starved. I told Yamato to forget about getting a job. Let me handle it all while he enjoys his youth."
You shrug, "What I'm trying to say, Ritsuko, is not to throw your folks under the bus like that. A lot of people would be lucky to have parents who look after them. And living on your own ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a lot of work and it's not guaranteed to end well for you."
"But it did for you," she points out, "And your brother. The two of you grew up like...that, but you didn't turn into assholes."
"That's cause we both had to put in the work to make sure we didn't," you retort, "If I had slipped up even once. Lost that one important fight I needed to win to get us our food, made it so one of us had to miss that one meal that lead to something awful happening, or picked that one fight that lead to one of us getting severely injured, then there's a good chance we wouldn't even be having this conversation."
Ritsuko is silent after that. Her eyes are focused on her feet, brow furrowed in intense concentration. You continue, "I'm not saying you shouldn't try to be independent, Ritsuko. I'm just saying that you shouldn't jump into something unless you know what you're getting into."
"Yeah...yeah...I get it," she waves you off with a gruff tone. You can tell you've struck a nerve, but you feel like she's taking your advice to heart. She jerks her head to the right, "Come on. Lets go see if we can find some bugs hidden under rocks or something."
You would point out how girls tend to not like bugs. But...you feel like that wouldn't be the right thing to say right now.
