[x] Encourage her. Who knows? She might actually manage it!

I'll be that guy. It's better to try it out for yourself than to listen to how it is, or isn't.

Unlike our parents, hers do not need to forcibly disappear with no return, so there is no harm should she really want this kind of life. She can reconcile with them any time once she is capable of standing on her own two feet.

This is just to be sure.

Well...this seems pretty clear.

Eh, to be fair, it's rare that we get to be the Straight-man in any situation, so we savor the opportunity. /jk.

Nah, seriously, life on your own isn't all sunshine and roses even if its a brand new experience. Like getting a bucket of cold water thrown on you. Some people enjoy that more than others, but either way after its done you're left soaking wet and having to wash your sheets cause god damn it does that not dry right. Life is complicated, like laundry.

"I'm not sure you do," you say as a frown comes over your face.

She shrugs, "Why not? You must've had total freedom to do whatever you wanted. You could get a job, buy your own place to stay at, use your own money to buy your own food. Not have to listen to parents breathing down your neck. Not having to constantly watch your back in case daddy decide to send his bodyguards to watch you. Being able to invite people over to your place for parties without worry. Sounds like the good life to me."
This reminds me of how Sakura said that she envied Naruto to not have to worry about parents in Road to Ninja. I get the small feeling that if Obito hadn't interfered, Naruto would have slightly snapped at her. Also reminds me of a certain part in a fanfic:

Sena Kumo said:
"Not having family sucks you know."

The six words had made him freeze.

"When you get something right, you don't have anyone to celebrate with you. When you fail at something or fall, there's no one there to tell you that you'll get it next time or help you up. When you fall sick, you have to stagger your way out of bed and treat yourself 'cause there's no one there to nurse you. When you feel hungry no one will help feed you. And when you have dreams, there's no one there to give you the confidence that you can achieve it."
Truer words...

To be honest, the only reason the brothers life seems sunshine and rainbows is because they are working their ass off to make it like bearable, because it sure as hell beats the alternative.

Week 10.10
[X] Be straight about it with her. Tell her the truth, even if it hurts.

"It's not like that at all."

Ritsuko keeps walking, but your words garner her full attention. Her eyes narrow up at you, "What do you mean?"

You sigh with a shake of your head, "Ritsuko, tell me; Do you know what it's like to go hungry for weeks at a time?"

"What does that-"

"Cause I do."

That stops her in her tracks.

Figuratively and literally.

She stops walking making you get a few steps ahead of her. You stop there and turn around to see her surprised face. She shakes her head, confounded expression still clear on her face, "Wait...really?"

"Had to learn what it was like," you look down at the ground, memories of that time coming to you unbidden, "It came in handy when I couldn't scrounge up enough loose change to to buy something for Yamato and me. Most of the time it was only enough for one of us. Then there was constantly moving from place to place trying to find somewhere to sleep. Usually it was an underpass next to a river, some stairs beneath an apartment complex, or an empty bus stop."

You wave for her to keep walking with you. She does so, never once taking her eyes off you while her face is a mask of intense concentration. You continue when the two of you are moving again, "We had to get up real early, so we could reach the alleyways before anyone else did. Was one of the main ways we got yen to buy stuff with."

You point down a nearby alley. It's dark, grimy, and filled with discarded trash. You chuckle, "Kind of looked like this one."

Ritsuko blinks twice. Then she slowly shakes her head, "That's...damn. Hayato...I...I had no idea. For a high school kid to live like that-"

"Oh no. We lived like that until I turned fourteen."

"WHAT?!"

She steps in front of you, eyes wider than ever and looking you up and down, "You...you lived like...like that as a child?!"

You nod your head, face turning grim, "When I said I didn't know my parents, I meant they weren't even there to take care of us. I had to keep Yamato safe all by myself, while still making sure both of us went to school."

"Well...why didn't you go to an orphanage?"

"Didn't trust places like that. Figured they would separate me and Yamato. Couldn't let that happen," you avoid letting any malice in your voice leak out. You...didn't really like the idea of not being there for Yamato when he was still growing up.

You shake the negative emotions off then start walking with Ritsuko again, "So, like I said, we lived like that until I turned fourteen. After that, I managed to grow tall enough that I could fool a construction foreman into believing I was sixteen. Gave me a job and I started working from that day on. Until I started going to Raijin."

"And that's where you started being able to do your own stuff, right?"

The smile on her face swiftly vanishes as you shake your head in response, "Nah. After that I had to save up all my money to get an apartment for the two of us. Then most of my money went to making sure neither of us starved. I told Yamato to forget about getting a job. Let me handle it all while he enjoys his youth."

You shrug, "What I'm trying to say, Ritsuko, is not to throw your folks under the bus like that. A lot of people would be lucky to have parents who look after them. And living on your own ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a lot of work and it's not guaranteed to end well for you."

"But it did for you," she points out, "And your brother. The two of you grew up like...that, but you didn't turn into assholes."

"That's cause we both had to put in the work to make sure we didn't," you retort, "If I had slipped up even once. Lost that one important fight I needed to win to get us our food, made it so one of us had to miss that one meal that lead to something awful happening, or picked that one fight that lead to one of us getting severely injured, then there's a good chance we wouldn't even be having this conversation."

Ritsuko is silent after that. Her eyes are focused on her feet, brow furrowed in intense concentration. You continue, "I'm not saying you shouldn't try to be independent, Ritsuko. I'm just saying that you shouldn't jump into something unless you know what you're getting into."

"Yeah...yeah...I get it," she waves you off with a gruff tone. You can tell you've struck a nerve, but you feel like she's taking your advice to heart. She jerks her head to the right, "Come on. Lets go see if we can find some bugs hidden under rocks or something."

You would point out how girls tend to not like bugs. But...you feel like that wouldn't be the right thing to say right now.

Hm, that was bad decision, but I understand why you did it.

Yeah, that is a good thing.

Nice. Now it is going to take 2-3- months before her SL starts degrading.

Well, it's not what she wanted to hear but it's a valuable moment nonetheless. Also a pretty sweet one once you step back and realize that he just let her in on his frankly rather saddening backstory.

The punk honestly wasn't even trying to be dramatic or shit. Just casually corrected her as you would tell someone who thought that it would be sunny tomorrow that it would actually rain.

That...pretty much says that you had to be a dad to your younger sibling. Stuff like this that reminds me why Yamato near-worships him, and also no wonder people who shit-talk on him piss him off so damn badly.

Omake Prompt List #1
OK. So I was originally going to do this after the Tournament...but you know what? Fuck it. Why not do it now?

So, I know that at least some people here also want to write Omakes. But I feel like I may have scared them off with what I've done with the current ones. This is mainly cause I honestly don't know how to handle them completely. I do want people to write them, I do want to give rewards for people writing them, but I don't want to end up with Omakes only being made for Bonuses and otherwise.

So, I'm taking a page out of Sage's book from Eastern Rhapsody. Every now and then, I'll write up a List of possible Omake Prompts for people. These will come in two flavors:

1. Bonus Omakes: These are Omakes that give actual in Quest Bonuses. They'll usually have a minimum Word Count attached to them, and there will be a limited number of them. Three at Max.

2. Free Omakes: These are just free prompts that don't give bonuses but could add more to the story/characters. I'll put at least 5 of these up at a time. Sometimes they'll be blank or won't be there, as I don't have any ideas off the top of my head.

Note: These Prompts are mere SUGGESTIONS. They are not hard rules. Anyone can still write an Omake if they have an idea for it, and every rule I've laid out about Omakes still applies (i.e. I require people send them to me as PMs so I can look them over and approve them before you post them here).

I will still give bonuses for both Free and other Omakes if I think they're well written.

That's about it really. So, lets start the first one:

Bonus Omakes:

1. The Hose Family Courtship: Hose tells his family about Hayato. His sisters start getting...ideas. Ideas he doesn't like. (+3 RP to Hose SL)

2. Training with Yamato: Yamato wants to be sure he can help Hayato. So he devises a training regiment. It goes...about as well as you can expect. (Yamato and Hayato gain Combat Partners Rank E)

3. The Fox and The Tsundere: Yameko and Munagi have a one-on-one conversation. Munagi gets flustered. (Yameko and Munagi Relationship Increases!)

On Combat Partner Ranks
This is a first time we've seen a skill with a letter rank, not numerical value. Can you elaborate?

It's essentially like the Combat Partner stuff from other AGG Quest. Represents how good you and an NPC are at working together in combat. At base, you'll gain maluses and bonuses based on the situation. With Combat Partner Ranks:

E = Basic Level. You won't step on each other's toes, but nothing really crazy. No maluses nor bonuses for working together.

D = Competent Level. You're getting better at figuring out how you both fight, and how you can work together on it. Nothing crazy, but you're getting there. Both of you gain a +5 to Combat Checks when you're fighting together.

C = Battle Buddies. The two of you have started to reach a mutual understanding when it comes to fighting with each other. To the point where you can guess what the other's gonna do before they say anything. It lets you pull off stuff you usually wouldn't be able to. +10 to Combat Checks when fighting together.

B = Back To Back Badasses. You two are more than just Battle Partners. Your understanding of the other's fighting style is bordering on pre-cognition. You can tell what they want you to do before they do and vice versa. +15 to Combat Checks when fighting together.

A = True Allies. At this point, the two of you might as well be the same person. You don't have ANY trouble working together. Put you in a battle with the other person, and you'll be unstoppable. +20 to Combat Checks when fighting together. Unlock a Special Team Attack unique to the person.

Note: Supernatural Partners don't gain these Ranks. They're already connected to you through your Soul. These Ranks are for your Mortal Battle Buddies.

2nd Note: Also, the maluses come from the situation/environment. You can still be given maluses by enemy abilities and such. Gaining Rank E would essentially ensure you don't get a "-10 (Poor Teamwork)" debuff. But you can still get a "-25 (???)" debuff applied by an enemy.

Well, I haven't read the other AGG Quest, so this is new info for me. And you probably want to threadmark this.

"It came in handy when I couldn't scrounge up enough loose change to to buy something for Yamato and Me.
Erroneous capitalisation.

The smile on her face swiftly vanishes as you shake your head in response, "Nah. After that I had to save up all my money to get an apartment for the two of us. I wonder how much part-time construction work done by minors pays that you can rent out an apartment and have enough left to feed two kids. Rent must really be low in Fiction!Japan.
I do want people to write them, I do want to give rewards for people writing them, but I don't want to end up with Omakes only being made for Bonuses and otherwise.
You probably already decided how to handle this, but one of the ways of balancing rewards is to make them less immediately applicable. Instead of providing bonuses to rolls or skills in the next update, give a character a Trait... better yet, give a Trait to a non-player character that might come into effect when we interact with them. Or make a plothook for the future. Reward storytelling with more potential for storytelling.

I was a big fan of how Gally handled rewards in Dark Prince of Camelot. You can find an example here. Most of them didn't have a chance to activate before the quest was abandoned, but the narrative potential and the character building were there.

Cool. For the record, it's not a vote. Those are just Omakes people could choose to write and get clear bonuses for.

Fixed the Typo, and that actually sounds cool.

I'll implement that as well.

Also, just went back on a bit of a re-read, we really need to up our Perception:people to something beyond a measly 3.

(Yamato and Hayato gain Combat Partners Rank E)
...tempting to write at least one of Hose's sisters shipping them, in spite of Hose's protests that he's not gay. Not sure if that's the kind of "ideas" you meant, but it'd definitely fit Prompt 1.

As for Prompt 2... The obvious summary is "You have no idea what you're doing so you stole this from an anime, didn't you?"

OK, everyone gonna try to write the next update before next week is over.

But before then, I just realized you'll be hanging with Elizabeth this time.

So time for me to do some rolls.

Ignore these.

Edit: OK then.
