A Beacon of Hope in the Darkness: Warhammer 40,000 Xeno Civ Quest

Turn 2 overview
Building on the success of the past year, our second year as a spacefaring power has blessed us with success. Every project we undertake will lay the foundation for something greater.

Overview: Naval Actions
Aiuran - The fourth planet from our star, Aiuran seems to have been capable of supporting life sometime in the past, as has been deduced from the images sent by our probes, which show what appear to be the remains of a river system. Also visible are what appear to be some sort of structures. This calls for a thorough survey. The same must apply to its two moons.
Survey level: 5/10 (Moderately surveyed)
Survey difficulty: Easy
Estimated survey duration: 16 months
Progress: 12/16 months

The initial survey has ended, and our cosmonauts are not entirely sure that Aiuran was capable of supporting life in the past. They have made preparations to extend the duration of the survey, and keep collecting data.

On the sidelines, they have found several rich mineral nodes and veins, from which they have collected samples. Some of them are unknown to us. They will be of much help in understanding this neighbor of our homeworld.

On the other hand, they have come across some structures while exploring. Preliminary observations have shown similarities with the XA category ruins on Xan'qarras. The ruins have been designated XA-01-A, XA-02-A, XA-03-A, XA-04-A and marked as a target of great importance.
Rewards: Mineral veins discovered, unknown minerals discovered, four XA category alien ruins discovered.

Overview: Infrastructure Actions
Build orbital shipyard

Description: Now that we have prepared the schematics, it is high time we lay the foundation for our cosmic fleet.
Cost: 540 M minerals, 162 M nanomaterials
Time: 1 year
Chance of success: 75%
Rolls: 2d100 = 151 (Success)

It is a moment of great pride for the Dae'laan, as our first orbital shipyard is completed and brought online. It will only be a matter of time before the first vessels will be built in its berths.

Build mining facilities in the Zul'karran Mountains

Description: A mountain range located in the northern regions of the Ler'kaas Desert, the Zul'karran are also a place of exquisite beauty and substantial resources. Several rich mineral veins have been found here by our surveyors. Building mining facilities here would be highly advisable. However, there is one thing that complicates matters. The Zul'karran Mountains are in close proximity to some Thunder Drake roosts, and if aggravated, they can devastate our efforts.
Cost: 225 M minerals, 67.5 M nanomaterials
Time: 3 months
Chance of success: 70%
Rolls: 2d100 = 113 (Close success)

The project came dangerously close to failure due to the Thunder Drakes feeling agitated by our presence, but thanks to the efforts of our druids, they were appeased. All is well, as the newly built mining facilities are now online, extracting minerals from one of the richest mineral nodes we have found so far.
Rewards: Additional minerals production (+100 M minerals per year)

Build mineral processing facilities × 4
Build nanomaterial production plants × 2

Cost: 90 M minerals, 27.2 M nanomaterials
Time: 23.4 months

The newly built mineral processing facilities will come in handy as the new mines in Zul'karran become operational. The nanomaterial plants will be of great help in providing more nanomaterials as our industrial capabilities expand.
Rewards: Additional minerals and nanomaterials production (+20 M minerals, +5.5 M nanomaterials per year)

Overview: Archaeology Actions
Decipher unknown alien language XA-L-01

Description: Our archaeologists have found what appears to be writing in a language of some sort. Attempts have been made in the past to make sense of it, but they have all met with failure. However, our linguistic experts refuse to admit defeat, and are ready to try umpteen more times.
Time: 1 year
Chance of success: 75%
Rolls : 2d100 = 101 (Borderline success)

As they say, no problem is devoid of a solution. The last failed attempt of our Lorefinders to decipher the language left them with a vow to crack it at all costs…or die trying. Thankfully, the latter will not come true, as they report with tired smiles that their efforts have paid off. They have compiled an alphabet of the language for the viewing of the Central Executive Committee.
Reward: The chance of success of exploring a XA category site increased by 7.5%

Explore unknown alien ruins XA-02

Cost: 500K minerals, 150K nanomaterials
Time: 11 months
Chance of success: 77.5%
Rolls: 2d100 = 95 (Close failure)

Once again, our team has not had much luck with the site XA-02. Its defense network is quite sophisticated, and is proving rather difficult to bypass.

Explore unknown alien ruins XA-03

Cost: 500K minerals, 150K nanomaterials
Time: 10 months
Chance of success: 77.5%
Rolls: 2d100 = 83 (Failure)

Attempts to hack into XA-03's cybersecurity system were unsuccessful. Our cyber experts are of the opinion that we should discontinue efforts to hack the system for the time being, as we might end up locking down the site permanently.

Explore unknown alien ruins XA-04

Cost: 500K minerals, 150K nanomaterials
Time: 9 months
Chance of success: 77.5%
Rolls: 2d100 = 135 (Success)

While the doors of the XA-04 site were resistant to normal drilling lasers, they could not bear the power of one of our newly built Dan'xenal lasers, which was used to cut open the door. On entry into the facility, we discovered the reason why it is so heavily protected.

From the looks of it, XA-04 seems to be a research laboratory working on military technology, as has been evinced from the suits of armor the team found in the rooms of the first level of the lab. There are four more levels in the facility, and each is rather large. The team is of the opinion that a single expedition will not suffice to delve into the secrets of this facility.
Obtained: A cache of military-grade armor of unknown alien origin.
Unlocked: Analysis - Unknown Alien Military-Grade Armor (Research Option), Explore unknown alien ruins XA-04 (Level 2) (Archaeology Action)

Explore unknown alien ruins XA-05

Cost: 650K minerals, 195K nanomaterials
Time: 11 months
Chance of success: 70%
Rolls: 2d100 = 112 (Close success)

Getting into XA-05 was no easy feat for our team, who had to dismantle the automatic defenses as they prepared to cut open the doors. Then, when they entered, they were stunned by what they saw.

XA-05 apparently seems to have been a logistics center of some sort, as was evinced by the stacks of crates piled all around. They contain either civilian goods or weapons and munitions. But why would a logistics center need this much protection? Something isn't adding up, our team feels. They suggest another expedition to have a closer look at the place.
Obtained: Several crates of civilian goods and weapons and munitions of unknown alien origin
Unlocked: Explore unknown alien ruins XA-05 (Phase 2) (Archaeology Action)

Overview: Research Actions
Advanced Nanoscale Assembly

Description: Our forays into the science of matter at the subatomic level have provided several promising and interesting insights. By means of nanoscale manipulation of matter, we have developed new construction techniques and materials. However, there is always room for improvement, even in the case of such sophisticated disciplines.
Category: Nanotechnology
Cost: 50 M nanomaterials
Time: 28 months
Chance of success: 80%
Unlocks: Reduced construction time and construction cost, increased nanomaterials production
Rolls: 2d100 = 189 (Brilliant success)

Our efforts at tinkering with the nanoscale structures of matter with atomic force microscopes have again paid off, helping us to make further improvements to our construction methods, as well as appreciably improve the output at our nanomaterial plants.
Rewards: -20% construction time and costs, +20% nanomaterials production

Biogenetic Modification (Phase 1)

Description: The studies of our genome have provided us with a wealth of information. Our geneticists now seek to find out if our genes can be modified, and if so, to what extent.
Category: Biotechnology
Cost: 20 M nanomaterials
Time: 18 months
Chance of success: 65%
Unlocks: Genetic Enhancement Protocols (Research Option)
Rolls: 2d100 = 118 (Close success)

It turned out to be harder than we thought. Apparently, our genome, while being very resilient, is not very amenable to modification. However, our geneticists have persisted in their efforts, and have been able to suggest some modifications that will benefit our species as a whole.
Unlocked: Genetic Enhancement Protocols (Research Option)

Basic Arcology Designs

Description: The arcology project was something we had to undertake out of compulsion, in order to keep our populace safe from the dangerous wildlife of our world. So far, we have established its feasibility. Now it is time for us to develop functional designs for the same.
Category: Infrastructure
Cost: 15 M nanomaterials
Time: 11 months
Chance of success: 90%
Unlocks: Arcology (Infrastructure Option)
Rolls: 2d100 = 191 (Near-perfect success)

At last, the efforts of our engineers have borne fruit, as the first designs for proper arcologies have been conceptualized. Now all that remains is to build one according to the design to see how well it works in practice.
Unlocked: Arcology (Infrastructure Option)

Analysis - Unknown Lunar Minerals

Description: Our cosmonauts have returned from Kel'taor bearing samples of hitherto unknown minerals. They have sparked considerable interest among our mineralogists, who are chomping at the bit to work on them.
Category: Advanced Materials
Cost: 15 M nanomaterials
Time: 15 months
Chance of success: 90%
Progress: 13/15 months

Our mineralogists report that their analysis of the mineral samples brought back from Kel'taor is progressing smoothly, and they are close to completing said analysis.

Overview: Faith Actions
Pantheon
The Graces of the Sun

Description: In our mythology, we have considered our star, Lac'rinsor, as a beacon that illuminates our world and the bane of all those who have evil intentions in their hearts. We have a plethora of texts that describe the origins and myths of our solar goddess, Lac'rinsali. It would be wise for us to unify them in the form of a singular codex, so that our priesthood will benefit from it.
Time: 12 months
Chance of success: 90%
Unlocks: Lore of the Light
Rolls: 2d100 = 189 (Brilliant success)

Our priests got down to work, collecting and combining all the scripture on the solar goddess that they could find. The result of their efforts is the Lac'rinsarri Codex, an exhaustive work containing the myths of Lac'rinsali.
Unlocked: Lore of the Light; new Faith Actions available.

The Solace of the Moon

Description: If Lac'rinsor gives us light during the day, then Kel'taor ensures that our nights are not entirely shrouded in darkness. Our lunar god, Kel'tanig, is seen as a sentinel against all darkness, and is invoked often by those working in the shadows, to help safeguard that which is good. There is much written lore about him. It should be collated, for the convenience of the priesthood and the people.
Time: 12 months
Chance of success: 90%
Unlocks: Lore of the Night
Rolls: 2d100 = 193 (Near-perfect success)

Thanks to the efforts of our priests, all the disparate lore about Kel'tanig has been collated into the first half of the Kel'tanni Codex, a unified compilation which is to be considered a leading authority for lore on the lunar god.
Unlocked: Lore of the Night; new Faith Actions available.

The Currents of Nourishment

Description: Water provides sustenance to many forms of life. Without it, thirst and drought are inevitable. At the same time, excess water, by means of rain, can cause devastating floods. Such is the duality which is present in our water god, Astaryok. He provides sustenance, but if angered, he can lay waste to cities. There are many written works containing his story. They must be collated for the benefit of his priesthood.
Time: 12 months
Chance of success: 90%
Unlocks: Lore of Water
Rolls: 2d100 = 194 (Near-perfect success)

Our priests have worked hard to prepare the Astaryothi Codex, a combined compilation of written works concerning the god of water. It will be of much aid to us in the times to come.
Unlocked: Lore of Water; new Faith Actions available.

The Spirits of the Wilderness

Description: Due to the hunter-warrior lifestyle led by our ancestors, two deities have naturally risen to prominence in our pantheon. The first is Nes'taria, the goddess of the wilds. She is representative of the duality that lies within the wilderness as we see it - caring and sustaining like a mother, yet dangerous and lethal like a force of nature. Our druids have in their possession several texts that describe her myths. We should see to it that they are unified into a singular codex.
Time: 12 months
Chance of success: 90%
Unlocks: Lore of the Wilds
Rolls: 2d100 = 192 (Near-perfect success)

The traditions regarding Nes'taria are as many and diverse as the wildlife around us. But in spite of this, our druids have been able to collect and collate all the texts describing her into the Nes'tarni Codex.
Unlocked: Lore of the Wilds; new Faith Actions available.

Psionics
Build a central facility for psionics research

Description: The Psiolyte Act was passed last year, allowing for the creation of a new secretariat to help the Dae'laan properly understand the psiolytes among us and the nature of the powers they possess. The first order of business is to establish a facility where we can conduct research on psionics and observe the psiolytes.
Cost: 112.5 M minerals, 33.75 M nanomaterials
Time: 8 months
Chance of success: 95%
Rolls: 2d100 = 196 (Near-perfect success)

Now that the first Federal Research Center for Psionics has opened, our scientists will have a place to study the field of Psionics with the aid of the Psiolytes. Let us pray for their success, as the horrors of the Void are not easy to deal with.
Rewards: An additional action slot for Psionics.

Preliminary Anti-Daemon Measures

Description: Though the dark years of the Curse of the Void are long past us, we have not exactly forgotten the tribulations that our ancestors had to face then. Vile, diabolic abominations pouring out of gashes between our world and the Void, slaughtering all who opposed them and corrupting those they saw fit to. It was due to great effort on the part of our ancestors and the unswerving faith in our deities that we were able to triumph over the forces of darkness. A lot of the knowledge that was used to ward off the enemy has been either lost or forgotten. If we are to ensure our civilization lives on, we must rediscover it all.
Cost: Negligible
Time: 1 year
Chance of success: 75%
Unlocks: Anti-Daemonology Research Options become available
Rolls: 2d100 = 175 (Major success)

It seems that fate has smiled upon us, as we have been able to recover and restore most of the knowledge concerning anti-diabolism, due partly to the fact that the priesthood had meticulously preserved much of said knowledge, making our task much easier.
Unlocked: Anti-Daemonology Research available.

Well, those ain't catastrophic failures. The amount of really high rolls are really surprising. Like, I would think we would be trending towards the middle, but I suppose we don't have enough rolls to know for certain the exact trends. Hopefully the Mr. High Rolls continue to bless us with their presence.

Like I said, you are enjoying a period of beginners' luck.

When it runs out, Near-perfect Success and Brilliant Success rolls will be harder to get, and more failure rolls will start showing up (a few of them being terrible).

I'm excited about spicier projects. The early-game projects are relatively vanilla. I'm waiting for the truly exciting, exotic, and absurd.

Also, I kinda love how you constantly put footnotes regarding the language and culture of our PC civilization. It makes me wonder if you made an extensive worldbuilding notes on their their language and culture. I had a conlang phase that didn't really leave me, and it made me hyper-aware of your worldbuilding. I keep wondering if you had made the basic structure of the language. What direction do they write? What kind of writing system do they have? What genders/tenses do they use? What's the regular sentence structure?

To be honest, I had to look up three fictional languages in order to build this lexicon (Orcish and Taur-ahe from Warcraft, Khalani from StarCraft).

The writing is done from left to right.

The script used is the eighth one from the top in the image below.

On a scale of 200, 2-99 is the failure range. The success range is 100-200.

The probability mentioned is the probability of getting a positive roll. What numbers you end up getting, is entirely up to chance.

Hey, sorry I missed this my bad!

What do you mean by the probability of getting a positive roll? I thought it meant the probability of success.

Maybe it will be clear with an example. If there was an action with a 50% difficulty, what would be the success and failure range?

Getting a positive roll means you succeeded.

If an action had a 50% chance of success, the success and failure ranges would be unchanged, but you would be equally likely to roll a good roll as you might roll a bad one.

Pretty good turn all around. Let's go nanomachines!

It may be because I've been watching FGO videos lately but I'm looking forward to seeing what nanomachines (with or without magical enhancements) can do XD.

A little heads-up on the progress of the next update.

It is 75% done, but progress hasn't been easy, due to things being rather chaotic on the home front.

I humbly request that you bear with me as I work my way through the next update.

Great.

Now I am saddled down with an assignment for college.

I am afraid I won't be able to get out this update in the near future.
