i've suddenly got the picture of a young trainer being manipulated by a malevolent ghost type
Makes me curious as to why I haven't really seen any ghost-type Pokemon SIs, but I guess it's not a common enough fic type for the idea to really occur to many people.
I once scripted out part of a story revolving around a trainer who was secretly a Haunter/Gengar possessing somebody. If I did a Pokemon story, it'd either be that, or an SI fic as Ash's Pikachu, because I think there's room for a fun conflict where the character has a desire to leave Ash, but has to try and cooperate with him because Ash and Pikachu are required to save the world. Well, Ash is, but the two are stuck together for at least a little while because of Celebi protecting the timeline.

"Duke's daughter in a magic medieval kingdom" is apparently a more common scenario than I was aware of. ^
Otome reincarnation stories are a very specific sub-genre of isekai, with many different conceptions from the standard fare. I wouldn't really compare them.

I think i remember brock having a pokemon every season that would come out and actually attack him for hitting on nurse joys or officer jennys. I know those were for comedic effect but theres some more instances for you!

Mostly because it wasn't entirely clear what world I set this in for the first two chapters, I think. The anime tends to only show Pokemon eating poke-chow/pellets (only the main characters' pokemon, at that), and has a generally lighthearted tone, so when I start writing about the necessity of hunting/the supposed existence of a Pokemon food chain, it makes people wonder if any of what Mawile!me has been doing was actually necessary, and not just me completely misinterpreting what's necessary for the world I'm in now. Not that I claim to speak for everyone reading this, but it's not an illogical conclusion to make.

I guess nobody read the pokemon adventure manga. In that, Red's caterpie gets kidnapped by some pidgey to be eaten. Pikachu saves the day as usual though

I, both in-story and out, don't like him much for that either, so don't expect the current state of things to last long, one way or another.
I'm really interested in how much grudge Flairile is going to have against Chimchar, because I kind of doubt that "just following orders" will be enough to forgive being burned alive.

I hope it's not too much of a grudge, Paul treats Chimchar badly enough W/O an angry Mawile joining in.

Oh no, now I hear her with the voice of Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors.
Little Poké-shop of horrors.

"No." The stern trainer growled at his latest catch, ignoring the grumbles from its stomach. "I fed you already, this is mine."

For a moment, the two stared into each other's eyes; vying for dominance. Until suddenly the Mawile... smiled?

With a neat pirouette, she span around, turning her back on him. Confusing the young man for just a few moments, until the massive jaws that graced the diminutive creatures back slowly rose up, a chill rapid ascending his spine as they slowly parted- "~Feed me, Paul" The Mawile sang

"Wait, What?" he intoned, refusing to show surprise. "how do you know my name?"

"~Feed me, Paul, Feed me all night long - That's right, boy! - You can do it!~" she continued her dread-song, turning her head to leer at him over one shoulder, and an icy chill ran through him.

He wanted to back off- No, he wanted to run away! but his legs simply wouldn't move, immobilized by creeping dread.

"~Feed me Paul; Maybe beef, pork, or rice?~"

Slowly, the maw opened wider and wider, the metallic fangs sparkling maliciously in the pale moonlight-

The jaws abruptly snapped closed with a thunderous boom but a hair's breadth from his face "~You'll feed me Paul~ or you will have to suffice..."

"I-I'm out of rice, wil-will beans do?" He whimpered.

All i can think of is theres a video online screaming FEEEEEED MEEEEE playing in my head.

An interesting thing to see could be that if you decide to go with ash for some reason you attempt to figure out whats soft reseting him and stop it?

Could be an interesting horror mystery if you want to try out.

Also on topic of moves, will the SI learn the ability of if i can pick it up, it gets yeeted with great force?

What is this acronym for. Google isn't helping.

As others have noted, it's the Tyrunt SI hosted on this site that kind of inspired this one (though it mostly just motivated me to actually start writing something I'd already had in mind for a while). It has directly inspired like, four or five other poke-SIs though, including Slippery, Early Bird, Trapped, No, I Am The Bell!, and Before the Destination. Sadly, none of those fics actually made it very far, and seem to have been abandoned - my hope is that this fic won't end up suffering the same fate.

There was one gastly SI I've seen on here, but after a fully unnecessary fake evolution just for the sake of edginess (isn't normal gengar enough for that?), it became too much of a power wank for me.

Ah, A Special Kind of Hell, I remember reading that one. I'm with you for the most part; I didn't mind the evolution itself, but it seemed fairly poorly executed, and the protagonist was a "Special Kind of Jackass", so it kind of lost my interest too.

At least you have hands, so you can actually write to communicate, unlike Tyrunt.

Eh, Tyrunt eventually figured out a way anyways. He probably could have just drawn in the dirt with a claw honestly, and undoubtedly would have thought to do so sooner if his head hadn't been screwed with by the people that made/revived him.

I am also aware of the story in question and no offense but if what happened there was edgy you must have a very low tolerance for dark-ish stories.

It's not that it went overboard on being edgy, so much as that it wasn't good edgy, if you know what I mean. Kind of hard to define, but there was definitely something missing to it that just made the whole arc wherein that happened come off rather poorly. Or at least, that was my experience reading it.

There was one where the protagonist ended up as the Sabrina Haunter.

Oh? Not seen that one; link?

Excluding the games, I'm pretty sure Pokemon as a whole are capable of getting out of their balls, but that it isn't the easiest thing to do. Excluding some of the exotic ones such as the master ball and the Celebi movie shadow balls, they don't seem like they are meant to hold a Pokemon in so much as provide a mobile shelter.
Considering you have to weaken a pokemon in order to get them to stay in the ball the first time, this seems to imply that a healthy, aware pokemon can probably break out with concerted effort. Whether the ball breaking all the time because of this is game mechanics only or not, I don't remember.

I think I have a pretty decent way of addressing this question, so stay tuned.

I've seen terrible examples on both sides, but I think I tend to prefer "going native" stories rather than perpetual "fish out of water" stories.

Oh no, I'm with you; fish out of water plots that never have the fish learn how to walk, or at least flop (and especially the ones that go around attempting to tell/prove to everyone how much better swimming is) are just frustrating. The SI/isekai victim actually adjusting to the world in question over time is definitely preferred. I just don't like it when they start that way, or their former life/memories don't really affect them beyond granting them certain knowledge or prior skills. Like I said, progression/growth over time in fiction, even just character or personality-wise, is something of a must for me.

and i'm shocked to see you don't call her Mewile

I'm shocked that I didn't think of that until you pointed it out. ^^; I guess I'm just sort of used to referring to my various insert selves that way, ie. Monika!me, Clover!me, etc. "Mewile" is probably a little too similar spelling-wise to "Mew" to not be confusing, and MEwile just looks like I'm just shouting for no reason, but Me-wile could certainly work. May or may not start using that, if you don't mind. :)

Sounds interesting! There was an old Pokemon fic I remember that had a trainer die, and then a ghost pokemon possessed his corpse and took over his team. Doing something in that vein could be cool. The Pikachu idea could be good too, though I imagine everything could end up feeling a bit too "on the rails" unless you ended up doing something very wrong or outright failing to duplicate ones of Pikachu's many ridiculous feats. Still a good setup nonetheless.

Pretty sure that was just Sinnoh actually, unless we're counting Misty and Max as Pokemon now.

Little Poké-shop of horrors.

You are possibly too kind to me, Farseer. Threadmarked!

Also on topic of moves, will the SI learn the ability of if i can pick it up, it gets yeeted with great force?

I mean, technically anyone can learn/obtain that ability if they're willing to get Fling-happy. :p

You know, Ash catches a shinx around this time.

After a thorough inspection of the list of Ash's current and prior Pokemon, I don't think he does, actually? Not in canon, at least.

@Flairina:
You have apparently read a lot of pokémon fics, are there any you recommend? Given that I quite enjoy this one, I'll trust your opinion here.
This is one of those settings I really like, despite not being particularly fond of the execution in the anime. Though unlike with many other animes it's mostly an age thing here, I did love it when I was younger.

I am also aware of the story in question and no offense but if what happened there was edgy you must have a very low tolerance for dark-ish stories.
There's a difference between dark and edgy.

Yeah I know what you mean the MC was a "Special Kind of Jackass" as you put it and honestly the Sabrina arc could of been done better.

There's a difference between dark and edgy.

I've crawled around places fanfiction.net for years so my tolerance for edge might be higher then yours.. That being said if your talking about the Sabrina arc I would rate it as trying and failing to make proper drama.

I think that's No Antidote. But I'm not completely sure about that.

Whoops, my bad. My source appears to be the only one, so probably bad.
