The operator, the guy who gave us this job, is also here, so Jaune blabbing about something he probably already knows of and likely does not want known is not gonna go over well here, this conversation is not private.

Uh, that's the elevator operator. Totally different guy. Also, since we're in the bedroom, the elevator has almost certainly left. So no, we're alone.

Yeah, I'll just vote for the thing that doesn't mention the spyware, because it seems blatantly obvious pretty likely that testing Jaune to see if he could notice it was the whole point of this exercise. Seriously, how would the virus even have gotten on Weiss' stuff? Does she really seem like the type to be that careless?
Unless I'm overthinking it and this is actually a trap for Weiss. The Schnee Heiress stabbing some guy who's just there to fix her computer would look pretty bad.

Honestly, I think that if the SDC was tracking her Internet, Weiss would probably at least suspect it. I think that if we decide to do something with the spyware, it's much wiser to ask her if she knows about it and gauge her reaction first, before offering to remove it.

[x] I was just hired in order to fix some virus that appeared on both your scroll and laptop by a shady guy downstairs. Also, your backup is filled with spyware sending stuff to SDC. Do you want to keep it or should i remove them?

Wait, can we actually tell her we're hired to get rid of the viruses from her Scroll and computer? I'm just worried that if we actually tell her, our "employer" would refuse to pay us for letting her know of such things.

It would have been a waste to not have all that sweet Lien.

But! There could be an upside to this if we don't get the money. We can use the spyware to get the people watching her and inform her of it, getting us in the good graces of Weiss Schnee.

Could we be really sneaky and give Weiss an offhand recomendation to get a new scroll and laptop? Something about getting herself something more personalised, and doing so directly rather order someone to get her stuff, so that she'd be able to get just the right stuff?

And if we wanted to be really blunt, add a line about how personal such things are because of how they store so much information about ourselves.

Whether or not it's moral to interfere with the SDC, it's undoubtedly wrong for them to be spying on Weiss like that. She's innocent.

Won't matter, because the backup drive containing all of her data is still infected with spyware. The only way to help her without recommending that she abandon all of her backup data is to remove the spyware.

Even if we tell Weiss about the spyware, why should she trust us? As far as she's concerned we're a stranger to her so who is she supposed to believe, her family's company or the scrawny stranger.
On the other hand, missing the blatantly obvious spyware isn't going to do our business reputation any good and it's not like we were specifically told not to tell her about the spyware? Hopefully once we establish that we can fix her computer we can warn her about the spyware. It's risky to get involved in a family dispute, but warning her seems safer than being an unwitting accomplice.

Just so we know we're all on the same page, we do all realize we're being led to assume Weiss infected her own Scroll and laptop with an OS level virus as a means of getting Daddy out of her life?

And honestly, her buying a new scroll is the most obvious tell that Jaune screwed his employer. Don't do that. Instead, give proper IT advice: recommend a fresh OS reinstall the next time she notices any lag, and that she download it on a trustworthy (Beacon) network. It's very common advice and there's literally no way to blame Jaune for giving proper advice since the SDC's Johnson decided to not explain what the job was really about.

[X] "Hey, the guy said you'd be out for a bit, but I'm glad you're here because this is way worse than just the virus I was expecting. I'd suggest paving over it with a backup, but I'm worried that might be infected, too. Would you be okay doing a complete reinstall of the OS? I should be able to handle it as-is, but that'd be safest."

Sword? What sword? We are but a humble IT serviceman, plying our trade.

We can remove the spyware, sure, but if we do, that's absolutely not the approach to take. Let me be clear: we checked where that spyware reports to, and it's the SDC. The company -daddy dearest in particular- is tracking what it's heiress is doing online. That, to be clear, is the international megacorp that is hiring us for this job, and that is happy to do some really, really shifty shit.

If we just blithely remove the spyware, not only will we not get our 192,000 lien payout, but the SDC will have a grudge against us. And that's... fine, but make that decision knowingly.
Could someone without our AI tell where it was sending info? Because telling her seems like a reasonable thing to do here, if we just found some sort of spyware while checking for any other viruses or whatever.

C'mon guys. No need to write a paragraph.

The spyware is produced by the manufacturer. Doesn't matter how secure the network is really.

Personally I suspect if we tell her about the spyware she'd accept it, and just present a good face to the spyware than to reject it and wait for the next stunt her father pulls to track her. A spy you know is there is quite useful.

I think the people who think it's a test for Jaune are right, because this sets off so many alarm bells.

First, it seems likely that the job offer was likely a way to lure Jaune (or someone of similar expertise) to where Weiss was staying and offer him the money. What was their plan if that didn't work?

Second, it seems likely that whichever parties in the SDC responsible for this did a background check on Jaune. Even if this is purely a small cabal in the SDC pulling illegal shit, he's a relative unknown entering the vicinity of their heiress, so it would be easy to justify. What do they know and what could they infer about Jaune's ability with computers?

Third, was this spyware specifically designed for Weiss, or was it something that could reasonably be installed in another context? Say, SDC corporate computers, perhaps. If it was designed specifically for Weiss, that would imply they wanted Jaune to succeed, which I don't think they did.

Fourth, why Jaune? They didn't need Jaune to get the virus on Weiss's device. Unless of course the virus was real and the SDC decided to take advantage of it. In which case, again, why Jaune? If Weiss had called for IT assistance, she wouldn't have her rapier out. If the SDC wanted to sneakily send someone in, they clearly had the capability. They also could have had Jaune in and out easily without meeting Weiss at all if they wanted.

So if it is a test, I reckon it's of two things. First, of Jaune's technical expertise (which has been brought up). Second, of Jaune's integrity, because why offer that amount of money if they didn't want Jaune to be forced to make a choice? They could easily have done it much less suspiciously and for much less money. Sure, Jaune would have picked up on it anyway, but they wouldn't have needed someone with Jaune's expertise.
