Schadenfreude intensifies.

Oh, poor Jaune.

[x] "I'm just here to fix a virus, please don't stab me in the eyes, I swear, I was just doing basic IT work."

I dunno, I'd put "failed pickup lines" lower on my to-stab list than "personal property violation".

We have Aura. Sword on the throat is a lot less dangerous when it has to break your soul barrier first to get to it.

Calmly just going, "Yeah, was hired to fix your computer actually by some guy, probably one of your butlers I guess, while replacing the OS here. At the hotel I mean."

I'm super okay with this, actually.

[x] I'm working for you, sort of!
[x] Your laptop was targeted by some really nasty ransomware, some probably SDC guy just hired me to fix it hush hush- ponytail, super slimy personality, ringing any bells?
[x] plz no stab

This would in fact be the optimal approach. Remember that Jaune's social is shit, tho. He's likely to be panicky in general no matter what we write in, so I'd prefer to stay in character and maybe guide the failure in comedic directions.

I mean, aside from author-based decisions on the function of Aura we do have canon confirmation that maintaining that Aura barrier around the throat takes intent, and being sufficiently confused and scared can totally mess up intent. Also, we have Aura, but Weiss has Aura and Dust. Having to overpower our Aura, and knowing she has to do that, means she'll go straight for the Dust-dependent functions on Myrtenaster if we become a threat, so sword-to-throat is definitely a salient threat even in a society where a semi-random distribution of the population has superpowers and force fields.

EDIT: Also, going to bed, but it is very important to me that Jaune specifically request to not be stabbed in the eyes. Please, guys. Make this happen for me.

Edit mk2: I decided to grab the reason this was important to me. Here you go.

[x] I was just hired in order to fix some virus that appeared on both your scroll and laptop by a shady guy downstairs. Also, your backup is filled with spyware sending stuff to SDC. Do you want to keep it or should i remove them?

Your Aura is currently down, because having it up is the difference between walking into a door and walking through a door for most Hunters, and activating it does tend to flare it, which Weiss will unabashedly take as a sign of enemy action right now, and while she may not be a surgeon, I imagine she'll leap at a reason to practice her tracheotomy skills on you right now.

Chatter's Choice Counsel is there for a reason, folks.

The reason is that Weiss Schnee wanna shank a bitch.

Don't be the bitch.

[X] I thought the offer was too good to be true, but now that something actually went wrong I'm not sure which one of us is being set up.
[X] Once she's calmed down and removed the sword from your neck, warn her about the spyware.

[X] Jaune Arc, expert in most fields related to computers. I was hired by one of your subordinates to remove the ransomware currently on your laptop and scroll. Your backup has also been filled with spyware, but I'll clean that up for you too. It would be bad for my reputation if I left such an important job half done.
[X] "Hey, the guy said you'd be out for a bit, but I'm glad you're here because this is way worse than just the virus I was expecting. I'd suggest paving over it with a backup, but I'm worried that might be infected, too. Would you be okay doing a complete reinstall of the OS? I should be able to handle it as-is, but that'd be safest."
[X] "...The Elevator Guy didn't tell you I was here?"
    -[X] Explain why we're there.
    [X] Tell her the truth

Our decision here is really to decide if we want to tell Wiess about the horribly invasive spyware or not. I for one vote that we tell her after we have already been paid a copious sum of money.

[x] I'm working for you, sort of!
[x] Your laptop was targeted by some really nasty ransomware, some guy, SDC probably but I didn't ask questions, just hired me to fix it - ponytail, ringing any bells?
[x] After we leave (and get paid) give Weiss a note saying that her computer and phone have SDC spyware on them (and instructions on how to remove it, if that possible).

I vote we fulfill the job we were hired to do get paid a lot, and then do the moral thing. Weiss can probably buy a new computer or something if she has to.

Also, does anyone know why Yang wasn't in our Signal class?

Multiple simultaneous class sections. She's also a student attending the school, but had her exam seperately (along with the rest of her class).

... Send the text to what? The Scroll and Laptop with the Spyware on them!?

This. If we do decide to be moral and tip her off, a handwritten note would work best.

There is an argument against it - going against the wishes of the SDC isn't a decision to be made lightly - but I think being on the outs with the megacorp is far too classic a cyberpunk narrative for our plucky hero to not entangle himself in. That'd required tipping her off after we get the cash.

Hmm.

@Prok :

How sophisticated is the spyware? Can we put a backdoor in their backdoor, so we can spoof the logging to some degree?

I feel a little paranoid about mentioning the spyware, what if this thing was a test of Jaune's abilities? Having the virus planted as an excuse to have him check it out to see if he's good enough to notice the spyware.
Also, does anyone know why Yang wasn't in our Signal class?
She was just off-screen the whole time, Jaune never noticed her. Easy mistake to make, she doesn't really stand out in any way.

If we do not ask to not be sword-poked, we will be sword-poked. Basic logic.

I think it's best we don't show all our cards and just remove the spyware while acting dumb on who the owner was. They'll be annoyed, but won't be able to do anything without coming out as Big Brother.

We can remove the spyware, sure, but if we do, that's absolutely not the approach to take. Let me be clear: we checked where that spyware reports to, and it's the SDC. The company -daddy dearest in particular- is tracking what it's heiress is doing online. That, to be clear, is the international megacorp that is hiring us for this job, and that is happy to do some really, really shifty shit.

If we just blithely remove the spyware, not only will we not get our 192,000 lien payout, but the SDC will have a grudge against us. And that's... fine, but make that decision knowingly.

I'm not sure if I'd call the... well, lemming train in this case "knowingly." For the most part at least.

Agreed, I don't like that vote at all. If nothing else, the spyware is something we really shouldn't be discussing while she still literally has a sword to our throat. De-escalate the situation and (hopefully) calm her down a bit with our bona-fides first.

It should come later. Maybe something like:

[ ] Inner conflict. Debate with bracket and courier the morality of this.
-[ ] ...You did say you'd walk if it was too shady. It's a lot of money, but...
--[ ] There are a lot of unethical ways you could get rich with the Transistor if that's who you wanted to be. This isn't a huge transgression, but... Better to maintain your own standards. You did the job you were hired for, and if they want to hold a grudge, that's on them.

[ ] Do a thorough scan for other possible bugs listening in in this room, then let Ms. Schnee know about the SDC monitoring spyware you noticed on her OS backup. Did she know about that?

I may have forgotten that we are putting spyware on the phone as well. I'll edit my vote to reflect that
It's already on there, we aren't putting anything in.
So, uh, few points, first, we do not have Aura up, and putting it up will alert Weiss to the fact that an intruder seems to be preparing for battle, Jaune is not gonna be calm here, secondly:

How dare he use your latent social anxiety against you.

Nothing latent about it. Laptop and Scroll both detected. Permission to access?

... You set the Cell down again, letting it hover about while you think.
The Cell is also here, so that could be a beepy little problem considering that it's an unknown entity, we might wanna keep that little guy safe.

Yeah, I'll just vote for the thing that doesn't mention the spyware, because it seems blatantly obvious pretty likely that testing Jaune to see if he could notice it was the whole point of this exercise. Seriously, how would the virus even have gotten on Weiss' stuff? Does she really seem like the type to be that careless?
