Puella Magica Somniabunt Sanguinis [PMMM/Bloodborne]

I also feel that the catholic school/orphanage explanation would be better. Some kids in orphanages in Japan are there because their parents for whatever reason aren't able to take care of them or leave them there without ever taking them back. It's very easy to spin Ruby's circumstances to fit within that framework.

...Yeah, hadn't thought of it that way but wow. That really is convenient.

Plus the emotional wound still being clearly raw for Ruby will probably dissuade them from pressing too hard on it.

It also corrects Sayaka's assumption that we're a senior at MMS by explaining that we're Homura's senior from catholic school.

Agreed.

Any suggestions for lines to add to a Catholic School vote? Turns of phrase to sell the idea?

Not really no. I got a couple for trying to ease Homura into the group, but none for the Catholic School bit in particular.

... Did we ever get confirmation Homura is a orphan in this quest? I've seen authors and QMs flip-flop on that point a lot. Usually they agree she's effectively an orphan anyway. If only because she doesn't remember them after not having seen them for a decade+.

I think we're currently wearing what appears to be the form of a senior MMS student. Still, there's no reason why we can't be both!
...wearing what you had been informed was an acceptable facsimile of a senior at Mitakihara Middle School.

Hmm I feel like for an initial response to that question, just saying something along the lines of, "We went to the same Catholic school!" is decent enough, especially if it's a euphemism for 'I'm an orphan' (presumably that'll just shut down that line of inquiry because Japanese politeness). I feel like if we try to embellish it any more, we'll make our backstory more involved at this juncture than it needs to be. Later on we can figure out more details with Homura if we need to, and dole out our Catholic school backstory in appropriate allotments.

Re-reading the Quest now, so I'll let you know if I find something one way or another. Don't think it's been mentioned though.

We are. I'm aiming to imply we were her senior back at the Catholic School/Orphanage, and we ended up going to MMS.

Makes sense.

Also if we're lucky, Homura being an orphan will give them extra reason to make sure Homura has a group with them over at MMS.

Hmm, on the topic of backstory, if need be think we could swing Ruby's occasional absence as her having a job to bring in some money for them? It helps explain some of Ruby's disappearances, or why she's not around Homura all the time.

Which is revealed later to be magical girl business, or equivalent.

[X] The the two of you went to the same 'Catholic school'
-[X] Catholic school in this case being a polite euphemism for, we're both orphans. That's where we met became friends, and how we started looking out for each other.

Avoiding overcomplicated backstories is always a good thing.

The worry that I have about masquerading as a student of MMS is that we don't actually attend and Kyubey could easily inform Sayaka and Madoka through Mami. Hm maybe we could explain we're wearing it to try out Homura's uniform?

I still think going with the most true explanation works best

[X] We met in the Hospital!
- [X] Be the happy little flower we are about recovering and being let out.
- [X] If pressed, let them know Homur'sreasons are her own but we got hit by a car.

Likewise, But changing slightly.

[X] We met in the Hospital!
- [X] Be the happy little flower we are about recovering and being let out.
- [X] If pressed, let them know Homura's reasons are her own but we got hit by a car. Avoid giving too much reason to pry, and only give this if absolutely necessary. We don't need to specify WHEN we met in the hospital.

Alas, this was apparently decided ahead of time, so we're stuck with this bit of the backstory.

It's not ideal, but apparently Homura and Ruby decided this was the best of choices.

It's more that both Ruby and Homrua agree that this should be done when they are at their best, and Ruby at peak humanity looks like she's Mami's age rather than ~14 like the others. As for the rest, like all eldritch monsters in PMMM she plans to get through this by telling a lot of very partial truths.

I still think going with the most true explanation works best

Eh, still think that truth doesn't work in our favor that much, and can more easily work against us if we're unlucky.

Also was listening to music while reading stuff and....well, the song I ended up listening to has some very different, hopeful yet haunting connotations for Ruby and Homura.

Eh, I'm not sold on being truthful about meeting at the hospital, when we're immediately going to enforce a falsehood that we attend their school. The moment they find out, they'll suspect the first thing we told them, unless we can reality-warp our way into the school's paperwork. I know practically nothing about Bloodborne so maybe it's possible.

Do you mean, being truthful about the hospital may be a moot point because if they find out we're not a student, they'll distrust the hospital story even if it is true?

The hospital may be easier to verify, but medical information there is probably still confidential. Though if they did, I suppose they'd know Ruby is the equivalent of a Jane Doe.

So I guess all roads lead back to orphanhood? And mistrust of us, if they ever uncover we're not really a student.

So really, we want to present a backstory that has a minimum of threads for them to tug at and reveal us for being some manner of fraud, because that poisons our entire story no matter what it is.

Actually, how are we going to pull off the 'going to MMS' deception when we don't actually go to MMS? If Ruby is supposed to be a senior around Mami's age, would she be suspicious if we don't show up in class, and also suspicious that she hasn't seen or heard of us until today?

Edit: I guess it'd depend on the size of the school...

TBF, by all appearances they had never heard of Mami before meeting her at the mall.

I think @Scramm is more concerned about Mami having never heard of Ruby the senior.

Which is a fair concern. Mami is more likely to be aware of her peers there, and more easily directed against us via Kyubey.

Can't think of much we can do about it though.
Hmm... Since we're a Jane Doe, we're having trouble with our ID and actually getting into a school? Requires dropping the orphanage plan though.

... Yeah. Can't think of much. Kinda annoyed as well since it was kind of dumped on us instead of it being our plan. Not sure why Homura/the QM thought this would work in the first place as well. High School is optional in Japan and we could totally pass for a 1st year.

... *Shrug* We're fucked.

I was under the vague impression that we were transferring in as well? Because that'd neatly wrap up any issues there, but I'm not sure if that's in the cards or not - Homura mentioned paperwork to allow the school to let us in, but that never got followed up on.

You mean aside from the Catholic School plan?

If that doesn't meet your criteria of plan, please be more specific. At very least point out which part of the post you take issue with so I know more clearly what's on your mind.

Admittedly I was obtuse. I apologize.

What I mean is that, while the Catholic School plan does appear sound, there's no guarantee that some meddling force (Kyuubey) or suspicious associate won't look deeper at us. This, admittedly, is an issue with the hospital plan as well. Hence my minor alteration. However, I still feel that limiting falsehoods is prudent. We WERE in a hospital, but we don't have to say WHEN.

On second thought: This, I think, might actually be reconcilable. Why don't we use both in some way? It might be even better.

That would imply we're also an amnesiac or some kind of homeless, since nobody came to pick us up and we're apparently not able to volunteer information for an ID.

I do not disagree. It'd be easier to sell Ruby being Homura's older working nee-chan, except not related by blood, who puts food on the table for both of them. A reason for Ruby to drop Homura off at school, but not stick around.

I didn't think we were transferring in, but I guess it's possible? I thought Ruby was kinda just wearing a uniform and walking in, and hoping no one calls her out.

Yeah I don't know Ruby's legal status either.

Admittedly I was obtuse. I apologize.

It's fine, you're refreshingly polite about it.

Agreed on the risk of people taking a closer look at us. I think the hospital invites more of a close look, because Madoka may check up on us if she hears we were in a car accident recently.

We WERE in a hospital, but we don't have to say WHEN.

Not sure playing that particular game is wise. Us being recently at a hospital, especially when Kyubey most definitely saw us there, is the easiest for him to poke holes in.

Homura was definitely recently in the hospital for her heart condition.

In fact, with the hospital plan, Kyubey has the most information readily available to poke holes in our backstory. Something to be wary of.

Of course he also knows we seemed to meet or have an incident at the hospital, but we're not doing omniscent Kubes, so I don't think he can deny the Catholic School backstory.

Either way we're opening ourselves up to some level of meddling. I don't think lying or being coy about when we were in the hospital will suit us well though. That one is fairly easy to poke holes in.

If we do a recent meeting, we need the backstory to be relatively sturdy and verifiable, at least to the sources they consult. If we do an older meeting in the past, we can aim for something so old nobody can verify for sure anymore.

On second thought: This, I think, might actually be reconcilable. Why don't we use both in some way? It might be even better.

Hmmm....it's possible, but we'd need to have a really good story that doesn't contradict itself, deny us the ability to improvise, et cetera.

I suppose if we say Catholic School for when we first met, there's nothing saying we didn't meet again and recognize each other at the hospital.

The damned MMS uniform is still an anchor around our neck though...

Wrong. Reinforcing a backstory isn't bad, but the more points of failure you include the more easily it falls apart. You're jumping from one to two points of failure if you try to use both. Unless you can entwine them so closely that they become nearly one, pick one or the other, not both.

That's what I mean. We'd need them to mesh together really, really well so they're nice and internally consistent, so that they reinforce each other.

If they don't reinforce each other, they start ripping the story apart. Or give Kyubey threads to selectively unravel.

...Ugh, now I wonder if Kyubey will send Mami on a fact-finding 'mission' to have her to learn stuff about us from hospital records. We're kinda sunk no matter what in this case, because it reveals Ruby as a Jane Doe, but we'll need to look out for this somehow.
