We want to have as waterproof a backstory as we can think up. I can't think of much to add to this, but that just means that it's good. We want to limit the amount of false information we use so we can pull that whole "from a certain point of view" schtick when the time comes. Basically, take up the goal of never lying - just tell everything that's pertinent, and nothing more. We should probably adopt this same process in future interactions - at least until we have to let the masquerade fail.

If anything, I advocate for being extremely candid as time goes on. If - IF, this is unlikely after all -the family ever comes up, say our Uncles were, respectively - a biologist (Oedon), an ophthalmologist (Brain), and a complete madman (Amygdala). We can easily spin our real story into a massive life for the persona we're building up in case it ever DOES come up. It may not, but paranoia's not a bad thing.

TLDR: Lie as little as possible by saying things that are true. Just not the WHOLE truth.

-[X] Catholic school in this case being a polite euphemism for, we're both orphans. That's where we met became friends, and how we started looking out for each other.

Yeah on reflection, I don't think hospital is such a good idea. Not if we're expecting to come clean with what we were supposedly in there for.

Girl gets hit by a car. After being released from the hospital, girl continues to walk without keeping track of where she's going. Girl crashes into another person.

Would you trust this girl's judgement?

I wouldn't. And since we do want them to listen to us and not second guess us, I think we'd be setting ourselves up for a significant social malus.

If we're gonna avoid the hit by a car bit, or at least not volunteer it so readily, hospital is more viable. I think orphan backstory helps us justify more history though.

It'll definitely give us a bit of a ditzy air, but I don't think that it'll necessarily taint how others see us too badly. I think it's one of those things that people can laugh off as an inside joke kind of deal later on, as long as we aren't continuously careless. Plus, if I recall correctly, the road to Mitakihara Middle School doesn't have any crossings with cars, so our carelessness in this case is more excusable. Been a while since I watched the series though, so correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyways yeah I'm down to go for the 'hospital buddy' story. It'll humanize Homura to them, since it shows that she can wake up in the hospital and become pals with a friendly senior like Ruby.

If we hadn't just had a literal run-in hello with Sayaka, I'd agree with you, we'd be fine laughing it off.

Since we did, well, that's kind of a point in favor of being continuously careless.

I really don't want either of these girls to think they need to keep a close eye on Ruby to make sure she doesn't wander into any roads. I mean on one hand it's good because it means Ruby is closer to at least some of them more often. On the other hand our history is kind of a scenary backdrop that we do not want them to pay much attention to, and following us closer, or trying to find our whre we live, is a bit much scrutiny.

Following KB's example is an excellent idea!

...I'm being 100% serious, here. The guy has had millennia of practice when it comes to manipulating the perceptions of teenagers. Kyuubey knows what he's doing. There are far worse entities to take cues from here.

If we didn't bring up the catholic school thing, these could both be technically true. We are sort of orphaned right now, or functionally so?
... Really? Fucking really? I was even replying to you specifically when I said this not even a page ago:
Homura's also likely an orphan, that's usually what "I went to Catholic School" means in Japan. That or your parents are stupidly rich
Unless they're a belligerent asshole, they'll drop it. Cause that's how you say "I'm an orphan" without actually saying I'm an orphan in Japan.

Because image is everything.

Also, Ruby was just now blinded by looking in Madoka's direction. I suspect Ruby running into stuff is gonna be a thing around them. It's funny, but from their perspective makes Ruby look a little too ditzy and unreliable.

*sighs*

Seriously guys if we go with hospital, can we please avoid volunteering the car crash thing? Unless we're forced to answer, point blank, I can't see how giving them that information helps us.

I figured we would say we came from a Catholic school like Homura, that being polite speak for, "We're orphans." That justifies our relationship right there, and gives us room to fill in backstory as needed.

Hmm yeah, the more I think about it the more the 'Catholic School' story is growing on me. It'll give us an easy reason as to why we're living together, and I suspect that the car accident/hospital buddy story, true as it is, might bring up more questions and force us to make a more involved backstory than we want. The Catholic school story is an easy shut-down, since no one really wants to press deeper into a potentially awkward conversation.

While I'm not as concerned about the ditziness of Car Accident story, I can see it causing problems once our new friends start asking us about what our family is like, and where we live, and other 'get-to-know-you' questions of the type that would all be answered without fuss if we respond from the beginning that we met Homura in 'Catholic School'.

That's a good point actually, we do need to have some address to give them. It's unlikely we'll be able to dodge the question of where we live forever.

On the flipeside, living at the same place as Homura means they probably expect us going home with her. If we have to keep meeting them inside the school or gates, that might get troublesome.

and I suspect that the car accident/hospital buddy story, true as it is, might bring up more questions and force us to make a more involved backstory than we want.

Also, Madoka is the nurse officer.

Who wants to beat she'll get too nosy if we mention that we were just in a hospital? If she finds out there's no Ruby enrolled in the school because she wants to make sure Ruby's being taken care of, that's a problem.

Like I mentioned earlier, take some important concepts of Mama and Papa and the Aunties and Uncles, and convert them into modern Japanese equivalents if it comes up. If need be, Homura knows enough about the fact that we're different that she might be able to help us get our cover story's deeper details straight.

And don't forget that we're a smart little bloodflower. Mama was smart, and we got that from her. We can observe, evaluate, and figure out that stuff later.

Huh. That is a good point... But why wouldn't they get nosy if our backstory doesn't add up? That could happen with the Catholic school plan too. Yes, there are flaws in the plan, but there are multiple ways we can work around them.

Besides, we're not really orphans, and Ruby seems like the type not to give up that easily. She's plucky. She still sees Mama and Papa as Mama and Papa. That could make it harder for her to tell that little lie.

There's flaws with both plans, but 'we were hit by a car' is much more immediate, alarming, and something that have reason and ability to follow up on. In the local school level at least.

They're more likely to let the Catholic school thing live and let. I mean it worked for Homura.

Not really? In the opening post she accepted that she was never going to see her parents again. It's literally Fated.

That makes it easier to sell the orphan backstory, because while she remembers her parents, she has no problem admitted they're gone. Or at least in a place she can't reach.

We probably can't sell, they're in heaven watching me, but we can come up with something else. This is one of the most authentic, true from a certain point of view, bits of the Catholic School backstory.

I also feel that the catholic school/orphanage explanation would be better. Some kids in orphanages in Japan are there because their parents for whatever reason aren't able to take care of them or leave them there without ever taking them back. It's very easy to spin Ruby's circumstances to fit within that framework.

It also corrects Sayaka's assumption that we're a senior at MMS by explaining that we're Homura's senior from catholic school.

Yeah, I'm convinced by the Catholic School backstory. It seems, overall, a lot easier to work with, and it'll explain implicitly things such as, why do we live with Homura, how we're close, why we're her senior, where our parents are, and so on.
