and that... hands a slot to the Unicorn. Given that they were at 20, that's not a bad thing in some ways.

Admittedly, when they were thinking "gee, it would be nice to have some representation in the halls of power" they were probably *not* thinking "Jade Champion", but you take what you can get, no?

Only currently non-locked are crab (at 45. Hi, Mom!), Scorpion (30), and Lion (30). We've got a bit of flexibility to play with for the next (few) years.

It looks the humble Horiuchi Shen-Zhe has fought his way to to the top. While there are more than a few who contest his victory due to his use of the mysterious Horiuchi style of magic. Others contend that if the Heaven's didn't want the Horiuchi to win, then he wouldn't have.

So with that in mind. Time to work on the update.

Year 1: Jade Championship pt 1.
Year 1 of your reign, 5th day of the Monkey.

In the end in spite of, or maybe because of it, you like the sardonic but polite Crane. You were never so gauche as to tell him that, but by giving him special permission to see his wife before coming to Toshi Ranbo, you communicated as such.

You had moved about a day's travel from where the venerable Test of the Emerald Champion was held. The ground of the Jade Temple still shone with a polished brilliance, these lands dedicated to all five of the elements were carefully sculpted. The simple lake fed by an underwater spring, the intricate stone pillars created with the intent that they would be destroyed in the Test, the ever burning braziers fed by daily shipments of wood nearly two hundred li away.

Any shugenja could find a kami to listen to here, any shugenja that had the power to be the Jade Champion would not need to. To limit the chances of death, the Taryu-jiai would be fought with elemental avatars. When an avatar was destroyed, the shugenja who summoned it would be hurt from backlash, but there would likely be no deaths...unlike the traditional form of just hurling elements at each other. You didn't have enough shugenja to waste them like that.

You look out from your new dais, again you can see your vassals attending you on the other dais, and behind you sits Hiroko and Kaname. A part of you resists looking at Kaname, ever since Noritoshi's advice, your mind had...become increasingly pre-occupied with thoughts of your wedding night.

Striving forward from your seat, you look at the small number of contestants. Unlike the Emerald Championship, the Jade was in theory open to all, but since it relied on sheer magical power, few bothered to compete unless they felt they had a chance.

"My samurai, you are gathered here, before myself, and the Heavens to compete for the title of Jade Champion. This title carries with it great weight in these trying times, you will be responsible for defending the Realm from all those who would turn magic against it. Your knowledge and power will be tested against the greatest foes of the age. I know that all of you here believe you have the ability to become the Jade Champion, it is my humble prayer that the Heavens smile and show that your belief is true. For now though, let us begin the Test of the Jade Champion."

"HAI MY EMPEROR!" was echoed back from you as the contestants bowed to you.

You brought down your fan, to signal that the tournament had begun. The samurai before you moved about into the various duelling circles, Seppun, Otomo and Miya shugenja all serving as both guards, and judges.

Sitting back down, as you watched an errant Ronin simply collapse as his avatar is shattered by a Yogo, you looked back at your two companions. The semifinals wouldn't be for a while, so....you didn't really have to care until then, really.

So who to talk to....

Cool, probably will do so over the weekend. And if you have questions, I have L5R 3rd edition with 4 of the expansion books for 3rd, burning sands, way of the unicorn, secrets of the unicorn and the four winds.
I like to think I have a fairly decent handle on the lore, but always enjoy seeing how older editions do thing. (Came into the game with 4e)

Well since I was a Unicorn player in the card game I grabbed some of the older Unicorn books (way and secret) just to get more of a background and history about them. Which is nice as even with newer editions you have a continuity of events.

A brief background of the Horiuchi and Horiuchi Shem-Zhe:
The Horiuchi are one of the most unique families of all the great clans in that they are composed of descendants of many Clans and not just the Unicorn. Their founder, Horiuchi Shoan, born of the Iuchi family and given the honorary title of Hori or moat for an incident where she protected the former Unicorn Clan Champions two children, one of who was Shinjo Shono, the current damiyo of the Shinjo family. She did so through the Castle of Water spell maintaining it until bushi (warriors) could come and kill the bandits trying to harm her charges. Originally she was to be the only Horiuchi, a special title that would die with her. However the Clan Wars occurred in which the Great Clans fought at first until the true enemy, Fu Leng emerged and the Clans united to put him down. This was also the war that ended the Hantei dynasty thanks to Fu Leng killing the last Emperor of the Hantei. From this war numerous orphans came about and Shoan was the one that sought out and took care of them. Amongst those orphans was Moto Shem-Zhe. He, along with his brothers were adopted by Shoan and took on the name of the Horiuchi.

For the Horiuchi they take on the orphans of the Empire, raise them, and train them. When they come of age they are given a choice- they can become a Horiuchi, return to their Family or become a ronin. Those that become Horiuchi in turn will travel the Empire looking for the unwanted orphans and bring them back to be raised. Because of this you can find children from families of all the Clan that are either currently being raised or have become Horiuchi, at the same time it is the smallest of the Unicorn families and the least martial. An example of this is Junichiro, born of the Isawa family and adopted by Shoan after becoming an orphan he chose to take on the name of the Horiuchi and wandered the Empire finding other orphans until he was killed.

Horiuchi Shem-Zhe is the second damiyo of Horiuchi family, taking the mantle from Horiuchi Shoan who is now dead. Different from many samurai, he does not seek to raise the status of his Family, instead seeks to continue the work of Shoan while also establishing a role for the Horiuhci. As one of the top Shugenja of the Unicorn, Shem-Zhe has worked on several projects for Moto Chagatai, Khan and Champion of the Unicorn in addition to his responsibilities in running the Family and caring for orphans.

A quick word on Unicorn magic. While they have the same spells as the other Clans thanks to their long journey into the wider world they have learned Gajin magic (though they disguise these as normal spells) and as such have access to many unique spells and abilities. They also have Meishodo or name magic. This was learned by Iuchi himself (all of the main families are named for an ancestor that worked along side the Kami of the Clan with the Clan of the Champions named for the Kami themselves, except the Unicorn, for who Shinjo was the Kami but she later striped the Shinjo family of championship and passed it onto the Moto Family, oh and the Moto family is for the Moto tribe that they met outside of Rokugan (the Empire) and who joined the Unicorn clan, so yes the Moto are part gajin). Meishodo is a powerful form of casting that is much quicker than normal magic, however it lacks the flexibility of normal magic and for a long time a Shugenja would have to chose one to pursue, as those that cast Meishodo could not cast normal magic and visa-versa. The Horiuchi family however discovered a way around this limitation however that knowledge has been kept for the Unicorn only. Also to my knowledge Meishodo is only practiced by the Unicorn Clan as well.

For schools Unicorn favor Air and Water spells, speed, movement and support.

You forgot that the Moto Death Priests favour Earth and being bloody terrifying, but over all a good write up. Choose one ring to have a free raise the next time it's rolled.

So, "fuck this shit" reformer as wife, "fuck this shit" nonreformer as Jade, "fuck this shit specifically" investigator that actually investigate as Advisor and Crane who can actually Crane as Emerald?

Heh. And we weren't even trying for this setup.

Void. And yeah I was rereading the base 3rd edition book and for the various unicorn school Water, Earth and Air are the favorite ones. I just tend to think of the their movement spells, the Baraunghar who use water and air spells for movement, healing and support. Also Moto Death Priest are perfectly nice people :) But yeah going to pool together all the source I have this weekend to give a more in depth overview of Iuchi, Horiuhci, Moto Death Priests and the various Advanced schools of the Unicorn plus more info on Meshido and the other Gajin magic they use. I can give some info on the Crab, Lion, Scorpion and Crane as they feature in two of the 3rd edition books I have.

Oh yeah, your council meetings are going to be interesting to say the least.

Hey Horiuchi are the absolute nicest Family you can find in the Empire. Like if you wanted to find a family of Good Guys they would be it. I mean they are not traditional (but then again none of the Unicorn are on account of Shinjo leading them out of the Empire to understand the lands around the when all of the traditions were being codified). Oh and on another note was reading the Unicorn section of Art of the Duel and I found the story of the Unicorn who did not use Iajitsu duel (which they still rarely practice amongst the Unicorn) instead Unicorn engage in Kenjutsu dueling with their swords already drawn and ready (Iajitsu dueling is regarded as stupid by the Unicorns).

As to reformer, Unicorns would not mind changes made to existing traditions as they are one of the more adaptable Clans (once again coming from the long journey they took outside the Empire). So actually Horuichi Shem-Zhe may be one of the best choices as Jade Champion. He is highly regarded by Moto Chagatai, however he has a relatively peaceful nature. Oh and this gives us two Damiyo as champions (Kakita and Shem-Zhe).

Champion Info and rewards
That actually brings up a good point, which I haven't really had a way to work into the narrative, and honestly didn't want to go down and decide which each candidate's leanings were ahead of time. But like the other councillors, the Jeweled Champions have a preference for how problems are solved. In their case it relates to law and tradition so they use the same axis.

Expansion focused samurai want to use Rokugani systems as they are and stretch definitions or expand them in order to handle problems, they're more likely to revive something old than try anything new.

Kakita Noritoshi favours Expansion

Reformer focused samurai don't see any particular part of Rokugani culture as truly sacrosanct, if to solve a problem an old law must be changed or done away with, they'll do that. They prefer to use innovative solutions for new problems and are likely to create new positions to look after things.

Horiuchi Shem-Zhe favours reform.

------------------
Second part of this is to codify the rewards thing. I'm not demanding anyone make omake or do long in depth analysis posts, or informational posts. However if you do put that in and I think it's something good that contributes to the thread, I'll toss a free raise your way.

However caveats as there must be caveats to avoid the whole 'we have 20 raises on everything' potential problem.
You must assign a free raise to an element ahead of time, and you can only spend 2 free raises on a single roll. You can have more, but only two will be used at most for any one roll.

So our Emerald and Jade champions have opposite view points... well it figure Crane are ultra traditional (they established the traditions of the court after all, which gives them an edge). Unicorn and Mantis are more reformer clans. Mantis due to not being one of the original Great Clans

And for the jewled Champions:
Topaz- an event held ever year for samurai going through Gempukku (coming of age), so each year a new Topaz champion is selected (Doji Domatai Crane Champion was a Topaz champion, in recent years a large number have been Unicorn- Topaz champion was chosen by an event each year which tended to be won by Unicorn players)
Emerald- head Magistrate, selected by winning Iajistu duels vs other contestants (we just did this, in OTL Shosuro Jimen won the event through treachery- he threatened other participants and forced Kakita to concede by threatening his sons life)
Jade- head Shugenja (Kuni Daigo won this, a brute from the Crab Clan and very strong)
Ruby- appointed by Emerald champion and trains the Emerald Magistrates (Magistrates, basically sheriff and investigator)
Amethyst-
Turquoise-
Pearl-

Not sure on the last three but they are part of the Jeweled Champions.

Which...I think lets us have a good variety of actions while also keeping everyone equally unhappy...

@Void Stalker
Technically the Topaz Champion is currently Hida Fumetsu as the next Topaz is held at the end of the summer. The Topaz gets a swanky armour and palace, but doesn't really have a real job. Which is why only when there's something approaching a crisis in the event or personal stake that Hisao will really care who it is.

There is no Pearl Champion as the naga are still asleep

Amethyst Championship is currently defunct as the Crown has been destroyed. While in theory anyone could hold the post of 'most prominent courtier of a generation' it's more a sop now than anything. Hisao has not yet seen the need to tell the Otomo to get him another one, as the magic that made the position useful is gone.

The Turquoise Championship does not yet exist, being created in 1172 OTL

The Ruby Champion is Utaku Takai currently, but he'll answer to Noritoshi not you, so he's not directly important.

It is the year 1170, a few things in canon timeline are slightly altered to happen a bit later or earlier, just to keep things flowing. (Primarily Toturi III's whole death thing happened a year later so all the tournament and stuff could happen in 1170)
