So... for the quick breakdown...

- Hida Eijiko: a "simple warrior", though highly competent at it. Not going to want to step out of her lane. No real benefit from the clan rating boost, and will make people even more convinced that we're a mama's boy. Pass.
- Kakita Ayane: Highly competent on battlefield and in courts, honor high enough to be above reproach, dedicated but unlikely to feel affection, little benefit from rating boost. This one is a position player. That honor might be critically important in some situations... but this is not one of those situations. Pass.
- Mirumoto Nanami: I'm... honestly not seeing any real strengths here. Capable combatant but not the best, her court skills have a caveat, and she's maybe okay in void? we don't even get much out of the clan rating bump. Pass.
- Ikoma Motoko: Excellent combatant, capable in the courts, but hesitant for some reason, and essentially no benefit from rating boost. Neh? Not discarding her out of hand, but I suspect there are better.
- Yoritomo Ikumi: There's some weird stuff about this one. Really into foreign things, which could be good or could be bad. My take on it for the moment is bad - the Empire needs a generation to retrench and rebuild. It's not the time for foreign adventurism. On the bright side, the ratings boost is really useful here - to the point where not taking her means that we're pretty much locking ourselves into handing the Mantis either the Imperial Advisor or Treasurer slots, sight unseen. For that alone, can't really discard her out of hand.
- Shiba Kaname: strong as a combatant, supporting strength in Void (and probably earth and/or honor, given the justice comment) as well as being stunningly beautiful. Will not respond well to us going against her sense of justice. In courts, will require assistance at first, but likely grow to be a powerful assistant. The "growth in the courts" side of things is a pretty good opportunity to grow the relationship, too. Given that we don't have an immediate need for a courtier wife, she's a very strong overall pick. Only serious drawbacks are basically wasting the rating boost, and the costs of breaking with her sense of justice.
- Bayushi Hoshi: Particularly strong in politics, still capable at combat, almost certainly loyal but has a lot of secrets. Rating boost again largely wasted. Not a fundamentally bad pick, but my feelign on it is that the only real reason to select her is if you wanted a Scorpion wife to begin with.
- Shinjo Rena: Humble. Little ambition. Competent in the courts and in combat, though not overly strong at either. Rating boost leveraged pretty well - would solve our growing Unicorn issue, and the humility means that she wouldn't be likely to get in our way.

So, between these, I'd say that Shinjo Rena beats out Yoritomo Ikumi as far as "leverage the Ratings" options go. We're going to pick a treasurer soon, we can hand that to the Mantis, and "overly humble" is better than "intensely interested in foreign things". I find Shiba Kaname *very* tempting in a lot of ways - basically temptign enought o beat out everyone else who isn't a ratings pick... and apparently those are the two that are in the running right now. Well. That's not a bad thing, I suppose. Between the two...

Shiba Kaname: will be the stronger Empress overall, especially once she comes into her own. Will wind up limiting our options at some points - not necessarily in bad ways, but possibly in ways that are not politically advantageous.
Shinjo Rena: basically a defensive pick. Unambitious, not terribly controversial, fixes our Unicorn rating problems before they get bad. Won't get in our way. Well-liked by the Moto, apparently.

In the end, for me... the rating difference between Shinjo and Shiba is only 10 points. I feel like Kaname is going to leave us more effective overall in the long term, and that somewhere along the way, increased capability is going to turn into rating points somehow. It's likely the weaker pick int he short term for a few different reasons, and it almost certainly will generate some additional trouble along the way, but I think it'll be worth it.

Year 1: To Meet your Fiancée
Reading through the profiles, and looking at the portraits, you find yourself wondering about the choices of some of them. Did the Dragon truly have no one better? or the Crab? A small suspicious part of your mind constructs an easy enough scenario for the latter. Your nakado wishing to make sure that you don't again choose one of the Crab. The former though...no clearly you're being paranoid.

You mentally begin crossing off the other candidates. Some with regret like Yoritomo Ikumi who would have solved your whole Mantis Problem immediately, others with barely a second thought. In the end you find your mind your trying to choose between Shinjo Rena and Shiba Kaname. A study in contrasts in many ways. Shinjo Rena is...safe, competent enough to be an asset, but seemingly lacking the motivation to become a hindrance. While Shiba Kaname is the opposite. A neophyte that would need your help...but also one with the will to act on her strong convictions and faith, she could cause problems for you.

So do you play a conservative hand, or do you gamble that Kaname has the ability to grow into a great Empress? It was a choice that could set a dynasty forward, or see it call crumbling down, and it was one you found yourself wrestling with over, and over.

Fortunes you wished that you had more time to prepare, to learn, to live, before having this weight crush down on you. Whatever you may wish your fate is what it is which means its up to you to make a choice. For a brief moment you consider practising divination to choose...but dismiss it out of hand. A pious Emperor could be a great boon, but one that could not make a simple decision about his life was worthless...and you were never that pious anyways.

Which is why you need a wife who is pious, now don't you? So the answer then is Shiba Kaname. If asked whether her portrait persuaded you, you will deny that until the day you die. Pushing aside that thought you set about gathering up the papers and the portraits. With that done you look out the window....its nearly the end of day, did you really spend two hours trying to figure this out?

Maybe it was time to go to bed and sleep...you'll tell Otomo-san your choice in the morning. Idly you wondered what Shiba Kaname was up to.
------------------------------------------------------

24th Day of the Serpent Year 1 of your reign.

The Festival of Musubi-no-kami was a mere four days away. It was absolutely time to meet your bride to be. So, why were you having trouble fidgeting forward? It's just a girl. Alright a beautiful girl that you will spend the rest of your life as a Samurai with, but still. Stop fidgeting Hisao!

With that refrain in your mind, you stop playing with the tea leaves in your cup and put it down.
Deep breaths, deep breaths. You are the Emperor of Rokugan, not some love sick air head of a Doji.

"My Emperor. Shiba Kaname-sama, is here to present her self." Miya Kanasuke announces.

"Send her in Miya-san." You say your voice strong and firm.

Thank Sensei that those speaking lessons stuck.

"As you command."

You wait there for a moment before the door opens, and a woman walks in. You're not quite struck dumb by the sight of her...but its a near thing. Long hair, deep eyes, fine almost sculpted features, oh yes you could see why she was renowned as a beauty. For a moment, you want nothing more than to be a dumb young Samurai to try and impress her, to make her want you, Hisao, not Toturi IV.

The thought is pushed away a brief moment after it happens. The image of her brown eyes shining in the moonlight as she confesses her love for you? Was a weakness, and above all else, an Emperor may not be week....but it was tempting, so tempting.

"My Emperor, may I present myself to you?" She asks, her voice firm yet very soft.

"Hai." You say.

Kaname moves through the room with a serene grace born of practised movements. You were not a true warrior, although you had training in that as well. You could tell that she was a hawk masquerading as a dove.

Bowing her head low to the floor, she kow tows three times.

"I am Shiba Kaname...daughter of Shiba Dosan and servant of Shiba Tsukimi-Ue, I hope I please you my Emperor."

You manage to move through the motions.
"I greet you Shiba Kaname-san as a servant of the Empire, your service does please me."

"Thank you for your high praise my Emperor. I am but a simple woman doing her duty."

The ritual over, an awkward silence falls over the air. Neither of you quite sure what to say to the other.
For your part, you feel like you should at least...talk to her, ask her about herself, or something. Should there not be more to this marriage than a brief meeting? How to talk to people it was second nature to you, or it usually was. Yet, here it came up a little short. Was it simply because for once you were being a young man first and Emperor second? Or was it because you genuinely had no idea what to say?

You had to say something, what you did to break this silence, would set the tone for your whole relationship. So come on Hisao think, think...you at least wanted to be friends right? Okay...she's nervous, determined, and...judging you? What? Not even on your appearance, that would make sense, no she's judging you as a person...right away? Yes you definitely have to say something, or this woman is going to base her opinion on you, entirely on the fact that you ogled her a little before going through the ritual motions

[] Write In
(AN)
(Meta this write is for two purposes, to establish the tone of Hisao and Kaname's relationships, and for you to have a bit of input into his personality)

Pity I both suck at write-ins and Lo5r cultures.

I'll just say I hope for:
  1. Unity in purpose, Hisao and Kaname can have different Spec's and jobs but ideally they will work in unity
  2. That they actually like each other, teeth-clenched teamwork while amusing isn't very effective.
  3. I've been planning on Hisao being a practical Paragon style Ruler with the belief that Lesser beings indulge in treachery and self-enrichment at the cost of your vassals.
  4. Focusing on infrastructure and Population management over just spinning the Clans against each other.
Now if a Better wordsmith would volunteer to put that in words for me I would be grateful.

Edit: I'll try to start something

[] (Ok so we need to start talking and break the ice) How was the trip here? Was there any major potholes on the road here that need fixing? is there any questions about me you want to ask?

This is a good start right?

I'll try my hand when I wake up. 11pm is not the time for writing L5R.

Many other things, but not L5R.

Given the heavily let's call it esoteric nature of L5R, I'll always obey the spirit of any write-ins, but if you slip up on something minor like san, sama or whatever, I'll fix it in the update. Hisao knows what he's doing. Probably.

Okay so going with we actually risked stability and voted for the slow-start but higher potential Empress with the intent of building her confidence and covering her weakness while she grows into her Role.

Apparently Justice is a big thing for her? Just promising to do a overhaul of the justice system, while maybe a nice wedding present would seem like we are trying to bribe her affections.
What Gift that is Justice related can we give her? Does Rokugan even have a Supreme Court?

Our highest stats are Earth and Air, and we just did a major infrastructure overhaul (or ordered done) maybe ask her what would be the most pleasing ceremony to the Kami to thank them for a successful operation? Reassure her about the Courts and offer to Tutor about Courtly politics?

We obviously find her beautiful but she has had likely Dozens of People tell her that to the point, so what else can we see in her that is praiseworthy?
She is a Martial Prodigy so maybe tell her you feel safer when she is around? Or would that seem cowardly?
Maybe offer to Spar with martial arts with her since it is likely something we both enjoy?
@gman391 What is her honor score?

Is it Honor before Reason or more like Lawful Good?

Nvm found in the answer in the threadmarks

@gman391 What is her honor score?

Is it Honor before Reason or more like Lawful Good?

Her Honour is a respectable 6.5. In general the average Samurai is one that tries to be honourable but sometimes fails and then has to deal with that appropriately. Because of this outside of clans renowned for their lack of honour, most people even out to around 4.0-5.5 with 6 actually being considered very honourable outside of certain schools or clans that highly prize honour even more so than most. The Phoenix are not one of those clans.

Kaname's Justice? Hisao doesn't know that. He can make an intuitive guess, that based on the Phoenix preference for pacifism, and the Shiba schools own emphasis on protecting people that it's likely about making that people don't get hurt for no real reason.

If you're asking what Rokugan's honour system is like...its a bit of both, but definitely more honour before reason. That is that there are often three solutions to any situation. The honourable thing, the thing that works, and the thing that we would think good. Honour is constructed so that Samurai with twitching blade hands are given good reasons to not flip out and go crazy on each other or on the people below them in the social system. It places a very high value on social harmony and tradition. However, sometimes the honourable thing. (Kill the fuck out of traitors) coincides with the morality thing.

Alright here is attempt 2
So rereading through the update I'm guessing she seems to be following a script and that we are currently alone and that would being in private would allow some informality. (no promises about being right.)

[] "Well, Simple woman or No, I am grateful for the chance to meet you before the ceremony and by all that I see my choice in you was well-founded to help keep me on the Honorable and pious path. Now with that done, have you eaten? Do you thirst? How was the trip here? do you have any questions for me? (Basically try and have her relax, reassure away any doubts of being worthy for the role of our wife and that we are interested in her more than for her beauty, and encourage a Q & A session between us)

Although hopefully smoother and more relaxed than that based on our courtly experience.

[P] Embrace Hida Yakamo

E: will probably try to work out my own vote for this when I'm done with my work

Will probably look something like this
Tone: Firm but kind (because in the end we are the Emperor & can't allow ourselve to show a weakness in public, we can be all love-stuck & insecure in privat with her)
Theme:
State of the realm
Personal opinion on it, our plan to rebuild it & how the plan transforms into effort
Our hope that she will support us in rebuilding & in governIng the realm by lending her wisdom & strength to us, maybe throw some praise along the way
The clans
Her opinion of the clans, small and great alike, tell her to be truthful about it
Person
After the Important stuff is done & we have a firm grasp on her views we can move to personal Hobbies & stuff like that,
Personal wish
Maybe ask her if she has a personal wish that we can fullfil her, but make sure that it is personal & not something politicAl motivated

That should be enough themes to last us through the talk

Edit: please forgive all the mobilphone generated mistakes

So I am again travelling today so no update, and I probably won't respond to any queries until tonight at the earliest. Still, I encourage you to do your best, remember that Hisao is also a young man as well as an Emperor.

and I probably won't respond to any queries until tonight at the earliest

I have just one, do we have to write real dialogue or would you accept a vote of intent, so to speak where we just tell you what we want to talk about and leave the actual dialogue to you

remember that Hisao is also a young man as well as an Emperor.

That might be so, but in the end he is the Emperor and he is aware of the fact that he mustn't appear weak, least somebody might exploit it

Therefore trying out something neutral but confident (even if it would be faked for the most part) for the first meeting with our future bride, about who we know nothing about, sounds sensible to me, especially given the whole show no overt emotion thing that the samurai have going on,

So time to try my hand

[X] Tone: Confident & firm but kind*
[X] Request her to walk through the gardens with you**
-[X] Ask her how her travel was and what she thought of his plan/effort to restore the empire***
-[X] Ask her what she thinks of the clans, great and small alike
--[X] After having a better grasp on her personality go into more personal stuff, like her hobbies or maybe her gempukku if that is not to personal
---[X]Finally if you are comfortable enough with her ask her whether you can fulfill her a personal wish that would make her stay more agreeable

*Basically how he talks as the Emperor, if maybe a bit more personal
**I assume we have those and do things like that, if not please just use something else to break the ice
***as in what she thinks about the way the restoration is handled & if the effort she has seen pleases her or if it could be improved somewhere

Okay time to explain myself
For the Tone,
Given the fact that Hisao is a young man with 0 experience talking to pretty young woman and has an apparent insecurity about it I think that he would fall back on the one way he knows how to talk to people, that is as the Emperor and talk to her that way, maybe with the occasional slip up,
The themes are mostly neutral politics, in order to get a better feelings of her person, to avoid slighting her and to get an outsiders view on our restoration politics as well as whether she share's her clan's politcal views or not, which we then would need to plan around
Afterwards, once we have a rough picture of her person, we can get more personal, learn more aboout her person and maybe open up ourselves some more
Finally the wish is mainly just to make her happy

Obviously people are welcome to take apart my vote if they figure out a better one or have an idea how to improve it
