Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Merlin: I feared that Molly had bad intentions for the world.
Dresden: Feared, past tense? So you think differently now?
Merlin: Yes. I know now she doesn't have bad intentions. She's just very, very dumb. Like you.
Molly: I would be insulted but I had a similar line of thought about the Senior Council like a week ago, so...

It's our fault either way, and this can all be explained in detail later. This makes some sense but it isn't really an argument for using a mote on this when they are needed elsewhere. You really think they aren't going to help deal with the planet wide crisis?
It doesn't need to be our fault. By presenting the situation as alternative to Kemmler's closest confidant succeeding in their plan, we deflect the blame. Yes, ancient danger (I refuse to call it evil) has been unleashed, but it's a win for good guys. A big win even.

Your saying these are reasonable assumptions without explaining why. The bleach mote recovery is 15 minutes per mote. So your idea is to be spending such time in a bottle of bleach while everyone else plans or plan in a bath of bleach (assuming we don't need to be moving about) revealing to everyone that mechanic of our power set, and lean on water travel to make up the difference in time wasted? That's another thing. Water travel doesn't allow us to carry people with and teleporting them with Sanctuary requires essence each time.
Black Exaltations have global range. One exalt might be in Syberia, another in Africa, the third in Red Court, and the final one somewhere in NeverNever. It takes hours to reach those areas. We do not have motes to do repeated Sanctuary transport maneuver. So, we either a) leave our allies behind to go via RVD, or b) use normal Dresdenverse transportation.

The latter option will take us at least an hour to travel basically anywhere. We can be dissolved in a bleach perfume bottle which Tiffany or Lydia carry while we travel.

It says "and to prevent their plans from ever having a chance to come to fruition I have enacted my own" the implication is that current events are, at least partially, directly the fault of our actions. This still isn't an argument for, actually nevermind I doubt it even matters at this point.

It's not either or. We could go with a combination of both, instead of giving up one of our main advantages in fast travel which you just used as an arguing point but are now advocating that we abandon entirely?

Well took a bit of doing here's some Ebon dragon / Kakuri charms.
● Loom Snarling Deception (Manual of Exalted Power Infernals) - The depths of shadow in the night realm are all encompassing only by walking into darkness can the desolate realm be known. System: Any ordinary or supernatural attempt to discern the Infernal's Nature automatically fails, revealing her Demeanor in its place. This Charm's effects are permanent.

Holden made Black Mirror incarnation Loom snarling deception but I felt there was an effect that matched the permanent not being able to tell who this was a fact fine enough to copy the name it is essentially a copy of inverted ego mask the one dot solar charm but I feel it matches the name and matches the effect so.
● Eldritch Secret Mastery (Manual of Exalted Power Infernals) - The Infernal is the master of things that hide in Shadows. System: Spend one essence for the rest of the scene The Infernal automatically sees any element of her environment within essence X 5 yards concealed in Shadow whether that concealment be purposeful or otherwise (I.E a safe behind a bookcase, a false bottom on a drawer, an assassin hiding beneath the bed) they may also reflexively make a perception + subterfuge rolled a difficulty six to detect supernaturally concealed objects resisted against the subjects manipulation + Subterfuge.

Eldritch Secrets Mastery was folded into Black Mirror Incarnation by the quest master so a lot of this is original might be kind of strong but I felt like the effect matched the name be able to sniff out or directly sends magical hiding places as well as be able to see directly in shadowed areas within an radius of an infernal.
●● Fate Rending Desperation (Manual of Exalted Power Infernals) - When the need is dire enough, Infernals may twist, warp and reweave the flow of joss in their vicinity to their advantage. System: Spend 2 willpower then rolling her Essence rating against difficulty 7, or by reflexively spending 1 Essence. The infernal may reduce the difficulty of all actions by one for one scene. This effort does not come without cost, doing so lowers the infernal effective willpower rating by one for one day per use for all purposes (Charms, Defences, Arguments) except accruing and holding temporary willpower the infernal counts as having one less permanent Willpower until the time elapses.

This effect is largely identical to the original charm no the consequence of the original charm was a bit more severe essentially creating localized distortions of Fates that were obvious to all of the starborn as well as the Bureau of Destiny. Though at this point I've based the fluff off of Hell weaving.
●●● Wickedness Beyond Life (Manual of Exalted Power Infernals) - There is no escape from the Infernal; the very shadows dog their prey's steps, whispering their secrets. System: The Infernal touches her target, spends 2 Essence, and rolls Manipulation + Subterfuge against a difficulty of the target's Willpower. Success curses them for one day per success. Her player may spend 1 Essence to perfectly know the location of the target for the next essence hours as long as the curse lasts. No roll is needed.

Pretty much just stole the name on this one the original just allowed the usage of Ebon Dragon charms on non-living creatures like ghost and automata.
●●●● Only Shadows Remain (Hundredfold Facets of Enlightenment) - The greatest curse of the Thousand hells is not the pain, is not the agony but the reduction of everything you could have been, the loss of self to shadow. System: The Infernal reflexively spends 1 Essence upon inflicting damage to an enemy then rolls Manipulation + Subterfuge against a difficulty of the victim's Willpower. Success imposes upon the target a permanent case of Anterograde amnesia. The victim remembers everything in their life until the point when this charm affected them. Initially nothing happens; they remember the last 5 to 10 minutes; this is enough for a victim to make sense of a combat scene or a brief verbal exchange, but anything further in the past gets muddled. His memory is fuzzy enough he does not react violently when they wake up in a different location than when they went to sleep but they do need to meet people and learn events all over again. As time passes they become more and more dissociated from reality to the victim it seems like Everything's changed since last night.

The victim of this charm may exert their will to keep some additional memories. They may spend one point of willpower beforehand to retain everything that happens over the next hour or after the fact to remember the last scene. The Infernal may remove this curse at any time. Eliminating the curse does not allow the victim to regain lost memories; those are gone, swallowed by Shadow forever.

Again just stole the name the original is just an enhancement of Bloodless Murk Evasion. Keeping in theme of charms messing with memories this one prevents the formation of new ones and it doesn't do so perfectly.
●●●●● Shadow Panoply Appropriation (Hundredfold Facets of Enlightenment) - The infernal is the Lord and Master of the shadows and their realm is plentiful and ever present. System: by reflexively spending one Essence and one willpower The infernal may fall into their own shadow or leap into a shadow and emerge from any other shadow that they are aware of up to Essence X 5 yards away for the rest of the Scene.

This one is largely identical except the original also was a larceny enhancer that granted Essence dice as well.
@DragonParadox do these look okay?

Ok, maybe I should rephrase a bit? What I wanted to say was "in order to prevent Kemmler's side from winning, I had to do my own thing". Would " to prevent their plans from ever having a chance to come to fruition I had to give another fruit a chance under the sun" or something like that? Or is too purple prose? Maybe " to prevent their plans from ever having a chance to come to fruition I had to take a chance myself, opposing mercy to malice"? Yeah, I think that works better.
It's not either or. We could go with a combination of both, instead of giving up one of our main advantages in fast travel which you just used as an arguing point but are now advocating that we abandon entirely?
It's not either-or. I am not advocating to abandon advantage of fast travel. Let me give more details:
1) We cannot expect to be able to deal with all four new abyssals in quick succession by ourselves with no backup. No, let me rephrase it: if they are quickly accessible by RVD, and we know where they are, we probably can deal with them, where dealing means "killing them". The issue is that we don't have any means to contain black shards, and so killing abyssals like this is pretty pointless.
2) We can probably deal with one or two of them by ourselves. For that, using RVD, if they are somewhere RVD can lead us to, and we can find them, is reasonable and we should do it.
3) Since we cannot expect to be able to deal with all of them by ourselves, at some point we'll have to wait for others to reach us / them.

Basically, no matter what, we aren't dealing with this within minutes.

Let the warding specialist who hasn't been drawn from his wards/illusionist who hasn't been trapped in illusions/enchanter who hasn't neglected to use their tools before things went completely to shit/ect throw the first stone.

I mean we definitely screwed up, but maybe the people who've lost as many wrinkles on their brains as they've gained on their faces over the decades should stop huffing glue before they start criticizing our hobbies. :V

@DragonParadox do these look okay?
  1. Loom Snarling Deception - We are not using Nature and Demeanor so this isn't necessary
  2. Eldritch Secret Master - Works as is
  3. Fate Rending Desperation - I hesitate to give you guys more DC modifiers, the system is kind of straining mechanically at that since the dice are d10s. Given how broadly usable this is I'm going to say no
  4. Wickedness Beyond Life - Works fine as is
  5. Only Shadows Remain - Works fine, but Molly would have serious issues using it IC due to how invasive it is
  6. Shadow Panoply Appropriation - Kakuri already has a shadow teleportation charm, feels a bit redundant

Yeah, changing the phrasing a bit to " I had to take a chance myself, opposing mercy to malice". That sounds better, and less like we intended to do this from the start.

Shadow Panoply Appropriation - Kakuri already has a shadow teleportation charm, feels a bit redundant
Can you freely use BME like that? I don't think you can hop out of teleportation using BME onto an opponent or move around just freely using it either.

Shadow panoply appropriation is an Ebon Dragon charm that essentially helps the infernal to break line of sight and attempt to murder an opponent by hopping out of a shadow behind them using a miscellaneous jump action essentially allowing establishment of stealth and possibly getting a flank or backstab off on an opponent.

Which is the only reason I have it ranked at five dots if it was just Shadow movement I would have ranked it like rendered villain dispersal.

Yeah, I think that works better.
It implies that this is somehow better than an alternative but that this is still due to our actions. Arguing semantics at this point but I'm just telling you how that reads.

It's not either-or. I am not advocating to abandon advantage of fast travel
You said our options are either then listed them out as A or B. One involving fast travel one not, and further elaborated on B. It just sounds like your making this up and backtracking as you go after putting more thought into it now to justify a reflexive vote that was presented within ten minutes of the update.

3) Since we cannot expect to be able to deal with all of them by ourselves, at some point we'll have to wait for others to reach us / them.

You shouldn't be arguing that we won't be dealing with it in minutes you should be arguing that we should expect to take downtime to recharge, in order to justify spending some on anything else when we have 9. That those various emerging situations will be stable enough (not even counting interference from outside parties) that people will vote to sit by and wait if we're already on the scene and they aren't yet and per your own words you are worried about rampages. Tell me I'm wrong for not being so willing to gamble on convenient assumptions all the time.

Fair point. Now I almost feel like BME should be a pre-requisite but the game isn't really designed around that and 5 dots is already expensive.

All in all works as is.

Dresden: How could you think unleashing the primordial evil source of all Black Vampires into the world would go well.
Molly: This is literally the first time unleashing a primordial evil source of anything has gone poorly for me. Give me a break.

Technically speaking unleashing that primordial evil is going fantastically, as long as we're grading on a curve. It's the timeless evil that was using LoV as a sleeping mask that's the real problem.

9 motes is all a new abyssal gets, and they also have lower attributes, smaller charmset, no ancient sorcery, no artifacts of any kind almost certainly, and no allies, you do realize that, right? 9 motes is not "we are almost dry". It's a near-full tank of an E1 celestial exalt.

I am arguing that we will have to pause at some point of handling this situation. We have 4 abyssals to deal with. Reasonably, if we can learn where they are, we can almost certainly take 2, while everyone else handles another one. This leaves #4 to deal with. The situation will take at least hours to resolve, if it can be resolved immediately.

Not just technically. Unsealing ancient danger (again, not evil at this point) is going fantastically for Molly. Abyssals have done nothing at this point. People are panicking, and that's fair. But we have seen literally zero bad consequences at the moment.

It's not "we are almost dry" it's "we are at half and the thread likes spending essence even on fighting, literally, a handful of mooks".

I don't know why are you assuming they'd have no allies. Just because they'd be dying doesn't mean there won't be allies or enemies or other obstacles in the vicinity or in getting to them. Again we shouldn't assume they aren't already involved with a major faction or that they aren't a significant character beforehand. The amount of possible Abyssals is four not one. This argument presented is for addressing one. You seem to be assuming that addressing any emerging situations in which someone would exalt is guaranteed to only require confronting the Exalts themselves, as if they'd exist in a vacuum.

Pause to.. recharge? That is having Molly do nothing else to address anything since recharging requires her to stay in a liquid state or stationary. Unless we hang out in Sanctuary, cutting ourselves off from everything else going on, which has caused us problems during developing situations before. There's a reason your being vague. At this point we clearly aren't going to agree on priority or resource management. It seems the fact that we fought the HM with 2 motes to start with and our longest lasting Shintai or fought the Spider in Boston with such low essence that Molly herself noted that situation was much more dangerous than it had any right to be doesn't have many reassess exactly what we did to get us to those points in the first place.

There is a saying that people only learn after tragedy not before. It could be then, that I am the one at fault for expecting much else if we haven't suffered an obvious setback that could be ascribed to resource management and acting on that expectation, truthfully wasting time speaking up on this even after such observed instances. Well, realistically holding my tongue would be the more sensible thing and it probably would bother less. I won't be talking or complaining about this anymore.

While the probability of more than one person in a singular group exalting all at once is non-zero, I find it to be significantly lower than new exalts being unrelated to each other. As such, we are likely to deal with each exalt separately, not all at once. And while they may have support, the probability of it being significant is relatively low in my opinion. At least significantly less, again, in my opinion, than them having no prepared support that will keep supporting them immediately after they exalt (and become a dread death knight to all supernatural sesnses).
Pause to.. recharge?
Yes, if need be, I will argue that we pause to recharge. Again, I cannot see this situation being resolved or contained in anything less than a full day. Not realistically, if we are planning for hostile abyssals, and we have to be planning for hostile abyssals.

Arc 15 Post 62: To Discern Death New
To Discern Death

13th of March 2007 A.D.

With a grimace at once genuine and meant to hide the truth Harry cannot allow out you explain into the dead air of the meeting room: "We were following a spirit long in Kemmler's company. It is gone at least. Could we have done the same to the one we found there in the depths?" You give a shrug heavy with frustration. "I don't know, but it might by his own words have called worse things from the depths. Given a choice to react with violence on one hand and mercy on the other, both equally uncertain the latter seemed... best."

Two pairs of eyes scrutinize your reaction, wiser and more piercing than either alone could be, but not for nothing did the old wizard call you 'Carpenter', he knows whose daughter you are and surely he knows how a knight would have chosen at that crossroad. The only piece of the puzzle absent, the only lie of omission, is that you could have simply left Aakebushu there, by the lightless waters. It's not hard to imagine how he something so dreadful might have been as hostile as the mortwrights... and imagine it thus does Jospeh Listend to the Wind.

Molly and Lydia lose 1 Essence (Excelencies)

The only reason you do not breathe a sigh of relief is that it would have given the game away and you imagine the same is true of Tiffany to your left and Lydia to your right, Harry being lucky enough to be behind the pair and thus not under their scruteny for his own part in the secret.

"Kemmler... of course it would be the old bone gnawer. There's a part of me that still... ah, never you mind, won't help us now. More important things to talk about now." He turns to Harry. "Ever wonder why it's so easy to raise the dead? Relatively of course, but it's easier to get a skeleton to start moving around and mauling people than it is to do the same with a pile of rocks."

"Regrets, people clinging to life..."

"Dinosaurs too?" Listens to the Wind asks, the faintest shadow of a smile tilting at the corners of his mouth. "What would a beast know about regret after its laid down its head to die? That's a Christian thing, no offense meant Ms Carpenter, blaming the bad on the fallen nature of man, man has a lot to attone for, but it's not all us, its older than us, other worlds that came before this one and died, now lying unresting at the root of the world, wanting, needing to die, but not able to."

"What, like undead planets? Hells bells..." It is rare to see Harry in a crunch without a quip, but this manages to shake him.

Alas for him the older wizard just shakes his head. "No, no, nothing so small, older natures, older elements, things you and I will never see alive but which are still remembered, vast amalgamations out of time that pull on flesh and bone and spirit. They can't come back, but in their dreaming death, they can force other things to be, wrong, twisted that is the heart of what some call 'the black art of necromancy'. 'Art''s a foolish word for it, it implies something with purpose and meaning, but I couldn't tell you what wiser heads call it because the trully wise don't call it anything at all."

"Is there a point to this?" Tiffany asks, a little brosquely.

"Not everyone whose ever served on the White Council was wise. There's spellbooks locked away behind iron, silver and salt that do not perform raise any corpses no, but they still do necromancy in the older way."

"As divination," Lydia cuts in. "You can find the places were the darkness is stronger or... will be stronger?"

"Fates that are burning black," Listens to the Wind agrees with a sigh that seems to come from the very depths of his being. "They were meant to find necromancers before they could run rampant and for a long, long time they did their job well."

Regained 2 Essence (Urge of the Forbidden)

"Until Kemmler," you guess.

A nod grave as... you would say death, but perhaps more than that given the subject at hand. "They might be able to find these shards let loose." What's spoken is clear enough and so is what is not: This seeking, this 'older necromancy' is looking into the powers of death. One who learns that much could easily learn more.

"The Council discontinued the practice when it failed to track Kemmler or was it used against his heirs?" you guess, the old wizard confirms you guess aright. Given the risks of starting into the face of death-beyond-death and the fact that is had failed once before it was deemed too great a risk to use. Yet wizards will be wizards, the spells were not struck from record, final the spellbook was not burned, but kept back against some other more urgent need... which is what you are being offered now in recompense for all you had done for the White Council, not a decision lightly made.

Lydia Essence 7/7 (0/3 Jade Talisman)
Molly Essence 10/18
Molly Willpower 7/9
