A Network Arcane
27st of February 2007 A.D.
Designing an online presence for minor practitioners turns out to be easy in one sense, building off the skeleton of mailing lists chat rooms and forums popping up all over the internet to deal with the fact that some people really do see the world differently. The problem is filtering out the cranks convinced the government found aliens and is keeping them in Area 51... out of a lack of imagination or something.
Well OK, that is not entirely fair, Pursuer of Diligent Scholarship admitted to herself the lines were blurry, sometimes people just misinterpreted what they saw though the lens of preexisting biases and other times the trauma warped memories out of shape. 'Greys' were easier to deal with than the Sidhe, late-surviving pterosaurs are easier to deal with than dragons, 'Satanist Cults' a simpler answer than the Vampire Cults.
Organization was key to spreading the word, but for far too long in the era before the internet organization had a been a target painted on one's back, at least that's what IRIS said and she might not know much about earth humanity, but she'd spent years understanding the various tribes of Sanctuary's upper green belt and now months taking in entire libraries of publicly available research and some not so public. According to the SUTRA the White Council managed to get away with growing into a world wide organization because the magic of wizards was just so powerful so widely applicable as to make up for the fact that human magicians were fragile, both physically and in their attachments to family and friends, lacking the metaphysical bonds of loyalty and control that held together the other powers including those that hunted humans.
Iris had even managed to come up with a mathematical model for how large an organization like the Order of the Cauldron could get relative to the surrounding population density as well as the nearness to other supernatural power centers before they would suffer erosion, subversion or collapse.
It was, to put it lightly not encouraging reading. Truth be told after the talks she had with Olivia and knowing how badly the Council had been subverted she had been ready to find that the Council was part of the pressure, maybe by plucking out some of the most talented magicians or even more sinister mechanisms, but nothing so simple was happening. To see the secret world to know it and accept the knowledge you had to be some kind of outcast. From the Alphas to Mortimer Lindquist to Gentleman Johnny Marcone the lesson this world either taught or enforced was 'taking care of your own', a kind of tribalism that could be benign to the individual but hampered collective action and trust.
Unable to just make everything public because... of course they couldn't, that was what Nemesis
wanted, Pods and her technological helpers focused on setting up a trusted pseudonymous system, one that could handle person to person messages and regional alerts. Ideally it would also have some way to pass money since that was very often the sticking point in getting someone out of a bad situation, but as as somewhat amused Gard had pointed out when they had gone to speak to her about the project that was a problem everyone from arms dealers to revolutionaries and rebels to the mob had tried and failed to fully solve. So they settled on creating a network that was fully enmeshed with data demons, or maybe one should call them daemons just to sound less sinister, which could be accessed from anywhere on earth with an internet connection which was part introductory course to magic and part mechanism to 'meet other supernaturals in your area'. F you Isabela, for putting that comparison into my head. So far very few people who used the system had availed themselves of more than the introductory resources, but very few was not none and as the advice would prove useful and more organic help started to flow Sophia was confident the platform would see greater adoption.
So far they had contacts in Vegas from the Cult of Ra Descending and the new lord of the city as well as from Boston among those their other self had helped out, the Alphas were moderators they had even managed to get Mortimer Lindquist on board. One might argue that giving Marcone an in as a user was questionable, but the whole point of the platform was to be public, he'd find out soon enough anyway and at least this way they would be able to keep an eye on him.
OOC: Some of the information from last month while you guys continue to vote. Iris did a lot of the heavy lifting when it came to setitng up the network. Also you might want to think of a name for it.
