if all the walker research costs us is 1 budget next turn, then there's absolutely no reason not to pursue it. we can just drop shield research for a turn, it's not even for this design and wont be ready any time soon either way. I also want to build the Aurek. sure it's not amazing but it's a decent design and I believe we'll get some profit off of it.

It's too expensive for the FDP, which means it would probably be too expensive for consumers too.

I don't agree with this statement. If the customers were doing the exact same job it'd be a fair statement but we'd be looking at a different group (with some overlap).

Compare a Grumman LLV with a Ford E-series or something with a refrigerated cargo bay. They're similar but the differences between the offerings are what make the sale.

The Aurek excels in all the wrong places, it's like trying to market a sports car on its fuel efficiency and safety features or making, as we did, the transport truck with the highest off-road speed in the business.

It excels in the wrong places for what the government desires which isn't the same as saying nobody has any desire for it. A Toyota Hilux with a bed topper has a large market but it'll be drastically different than the Grumman LLV.

Honestly I think the engines are fine, it's the astromech, autochef, and holotable that killed it. What a waste of +15 Cost.

If we hadn't had the good rolls on Maneuverability, Special Compartment, and Cost thrown out because "Failed Precurment [sic] Limits", it'd be worth building; there's definitely a market for a comfy clipper or what have you. Even just Maneuverability would have justified production at a low rate; if it was fast and nimble somebody would pay for it. But as it stands I just...it's just not good. I don't think it'll sell, not at the price we'd have to charge for it. We blew up the cost too high for the contract on silly luxuries that procurement boards were never going to care about, we failed too many rolls for reasons beyond our control, and even one of the passes, the weapons, was for a pretty shit weapon.

The net result is "This is a one-success, five-failure ship".

It has good engines and terrible everything else for its price, and is never going to turn a profit. Producing it would be a mistake. Let's not throw good money after bad, please.

That's not relevant though. Whether the job is the same or radically different doesn't matter to us, the price tag remains the same, and the FDP has both more money and the cost-reduction factor of buying in bulk. Selling the Aurek to private citizens would mean retail price hikes, and we know that the YT-1000, which is slightly less expensive than the Aurek, is less a common family ship and more an investment made by people that actually haul cargo for money. It may work as a luxury or semi-luxury craft, given we designed it to have an autochef and a holotable installed in it by default, but your average joe isn't going to be able to afford this, and our location doesn't exactly leave us with an excess of high-paying clientele.

You don't need to make a new plan, this is the same as an existing one.

Your plans are literally the same, why would you switch?

so at this point we've got three identical plans. Less Shielding, Same Shielding, and Sunk Costs. people really need to consolidate votes better.
Less Shielding was originally my faulty plan that I replaced with Same Shielding, so those should not be identical. Now everything should be consolidated behind Sunk Costs, should it not?

EDIT: Wrong, there is an edited version of Less Shielding still around. What a mess...

well I'm honestly not that attached to putting the Aurek into production, I'd rather have it but the one I really care about is the walkers. so I guess I'll change my vote since my plan isn't getting any traction.

Will vote later but I'm gonna drop a bit of thinking for threwalker right now.

I think the best thing to sell for a combat walker would be a light anti air model for planetary defens forces.

Since we were looking at the gundam work pod as insperation I found these ideas

Frist one would baisicly just be a mobile turret

Hm. Is there a reason we can't just tear out the Aurek's luxury features and sell it as a smuggler/fast transit vehicle in the local area?

By the way Jax, there's like 3 plans which are all identical so you may have to do some direct counting for the votes later.
I noticed that already and have read the comments on that. When I pull the vote I will take a look.

Why do you think that an anti-air model would be good?

Fighters are the new hot item, and a cheap fighter that can be deployed by an ad hoc carrier is going to be a fast pirate staple.
what DaLinty said but also because it turns any area with a garrison into a much hotter landing zone for pirates thereby forcing Pirate shuttles and light freighters to land further away from the settlements they are targeting which buys the locals more time fill up sandbags, shove the kids into the basements/shelters and other assorted steps they can take to make hitting their town a higher risk.

Nothing except unbeatable competition. Simply put, it's not as good at ordinary cargo transport as the YT-1000 due to having less storage space, and those more sketchy folks who deal in illicit materials would probably want a ship that is better in a fight than the Aurek, even though the Aurek is quite fast.

Hopefully we can adapt the engine setup of the Aurek for a future ship. I'd believe a more heavily armed, modified Aurec could have a market for the sketchy folk. Would also be a good springboard for the military markets.

There may be a smaller market for high speed 'I need this cargo delivered YESTERDAY' shipping.
Usually that sort of cargo is extremely high value, which means that ships built for that purpose are top-of-the-line and thus beyond our ability to beat.

Practically speaking, we will need to focus on cheapness because objective quality is something we simply cannot win on. And preferably also in a market which is not saturated.
