Character Profile (Dorian Croft) + Mask Construction
Dorian Croft - Overall Attributes

Import: 5.5

AN: Import is a meta-resource you'll be able to spend on rare upgrades later on.

PHY - Good health; works out semi-regularly, excellent stamina.
MEN - Genius mask-crafter, otherwise merely clever.
SOC - Impeccable etiquette and ability to manipulate.

Available Skills:
Craft (6.8, near-Master - Masks)
Deception (6, Elite - Acting)
Socialize (5, Expert - Noble Etiquette)
Stealth (4, Adept)
Fencing (4, Adept)
Singing (4, Adept)
Linguistics (4, Adept)

Mask: Glass Webweaver - A smooth surface of charcoal-black frosted glass, reflecting the face of whoever's looking at you.
Potential: 34 (40 Post-Fixation)
Fixation: Mild (1.2x effective Potential modifier)

You've 40 Potential to invest. Choose the features you'd like to focus on, giving them as much Potential as you deem useful (plans recommended):

[ ] Antimask - What is a mask without a defined shape, not a feature save its reflectivity, if not the opposite of a mask?

Exerts controllable antimagic; can be wielded as an area effect, or focused on a singular individual for a more dramatic application. Less effective on non-viewable targets, such as the invisible or abstract. It can be used on the self to remove curses or hostile supernatural effects, wash away mental influence, and so on. Continued viewing of a target can 'saturate' them with the antimagic, bolstering the effect's strength over time, although this saturation diminishes its returns constantly. The heuristics to determine its strength in a particular match-up are difficult, but the effect scales with more Potential invested in Antimask, as well as, to a smaller degree, Webweaver's overall Potential.

Invested Potential - Increases strength and control over the antimagic effect linearly. Antimask's strength increases naturally with Webweaver's Potential, but a direct investment of this sort is more focused and effective.

-[ ] Unmask (5 Potential) - If a critical saturation of antimagic on a target entity is reached; a process which starts immediately on fully nullified targets, and requires time for merely weakened ones, it'll start to fray apart the basis of their magical abilities in a permanent fashion, irreversibly weakening them. If done over long periods of time, or multiple sessions, it can even fully discorporate the magic in an object or individual, rendering them mundane. Certain effects far more powerful than the Webweaver can resist, or may even be fully immune, although this is uncommon and often requires exceptional metaphysical strength.

[ ] Reflection - All who stare into your mask see only themselves.

Allows for copying and mimicry of observed magic. In the case of entities whose magics are not directly visible, effectiveness is steeply reduced; but even simply observing a being can confer some minor fraction of its power. Mimicry is always imperfect and temporary, lasting at most a minute if no visual contact of the target is made. Instinctive knowledge and intuition of the powers is conferred, alongside the needed memories to make use of them. However, attitudes or inherent attributes may not be; mess around with the unknown and forbidden at your own peril. This can copy effects weaker than Webweaver's overall Potential much better and with fewer flaws.

Can also steal memories and skills, with even fewer limits and flaws, although in a likewise ultimately temporary fashion.

With accompanying Antimask investiture, it permits reflection of magic as well, rather than mere annulment: instead of nullification, an effect can be repulsed back at its caster at full strength. If an effect is mighty enough to resist, its power is instead slowed down, dispersed, and at least a fraction of that potential is always thrown back. However, this may result in you being struck by some of the effect, where this might not have occurred if you'd simply focused on its nullification.

Invested Potential - Increases strength and control over the copying effect, as well as the repulsion effect. After sufficient investiture, can eventually store individual castings of magical powers, or simply a fraction of the power that composes them. These decay fully over a period of time equal to about half the mask's overall Potential in days and the storage space is limited, scaling likewise with overall Potential, but can be deployed freely before that.

-[ ] Heart-Reader (5 Potential, 5 Import, requires at least 10 Potential distributed across Antimask and Reflection) - With focus, you can now perceive hazy mists over an individual which congeal into artistic representations of their magical abilities, making them easier to copy and nullify.

[ ] Shaper (2 Potential) - Can reform one's appearance with a high-fidelity illusion, affecting one sense at a time.
-[ ] Shaper II-IV (2 Potential per) - Affects one additional sense per purchase (sight, hearing, scent/taste, touch)
-[ ] Master Shaper (5 Potential, requires full sensory coverage) - Supplies instinctive knowledge of mannerisms, alterations in posture and gait, and other steps that can be taken to further convince onlookers of the truth of one's disguise.

Reinforces the disguise against discovery through magical means, confounding supernatural queries, which is further enhanced with Potential invested into Antimask. Furthermore, the Webweaver can be concealed 'inside' of another mask, unveiled and veiled again as needed, and taken out when this has outlived its usefulness.

Once Shaper IV and Master Shaper are acquired, invested Potential merely raises resistance to magical discovery, at double the rate offered by Antimask investment.

[ ] Puppeteer - Enhanced social instincts and talents, broadening and linearly improving the character's persuasive, deceptive, and seductive abilities. He becomes a better orator, imbued with a magnetic charisma. Effect magnified if there is 'eye contact' being made and the interlocutor can see their own facial reflection in the mask.

The Webweaver can immediately be swapped out for another mask you have on your person in a pinch, and vice versa; this has a short cooldown.

Syncretic with every other feature of the mask, conferring unique bonuses:
*Potential invested in Antimask grants intimidation and leadership, and makes issued commands unusually compelling.
*Potential invested in Reflection grants increasing ability to suss out a target's motivations, strengths, and weaknesses.
*Potential invested in Shaper makes the character a better deceiver and improves their ability to put others at ease about their own motivations.

Invested Potential - Improve charisma and syncretic effects. Decreases cooldown on mask-swapping.

---

Furthermore, choose the nature of your additional two masks. Each has 24 Potential, which'll be distributed in good faith on abilities expressed as most desireable by the voters, as perceived by the QM; if overwhelming majority supports this, there'll instead be a secondary vote with further options to choose from.

[ ] Assassination - A package containing everything you theoretically need to render a duke into a corpse: inhuman agility and swiftness, low-supernal stealth and bladed weapon skills (7.5); moderate resistance to hostile magical effects, especially divinatory in nature.

[ ] Healing - A mask that enhances the wearer's constitution and drastically accelerates the natural healing process; stronger when used to stabilize critical and life-threatening wounds. The effect can be passed onto a friendly target through sustained touch, granting them the mask's vitality as long as they remain in contact.

[ ] Tinkering - A mask diegetically meant to allow for making minor and temporary adjustments to others in the field, such as converting what a mask's Potential is invested into before it starts flowing back to its original ability. Non-diegetically, you can use this as a head start on crafting new masks off-world by using it on itself.

[ ] Travel - Grants swift flight (about 275kph at maximum acceleration) and resistance to side effects of such; provides oxygen and protection from drastic pressure or gravitational force variations as long as it is worn.

[ ] Emergency - Literally a 'wear and break in case of emergency' mask. If worn, comprehensively enhances all efforts to escape an undesireable situation. Can be irreversibly shattered to immediately teleport to the nearest safe location; if wounded, location will be relatively close to a source of possible healing.

I feel like the main conversation to be having is whether we want to spec the main mask for combat (using reflection and antimask) or for utility (using shaper, puppeteer and Unmask). If we go for the former I'd say Travel and Healing for secondary masks, if the latter we'll probably want to grab either Assassination or Emergency plus whichever of Travel or Healing makes us feel safer.

The Idea I have for this is that it'd make the wearer much more perceptive at everything. Noticing stuff thats hidden, magical, or just unnoticed at the time and giving insight into how that stuff fits together. It could also have an ability where all the eyes focus on a target and intimidates them into freezing up for a bit (probably at least long enough for Dorian to switch masks quickly).

Also by wheels+eyes I meant something like this but without the wings. I couldn't find a better picture than this.

Is it probably a bad idea to disregard the healing mask? Probably. Do I care? Not really.
Think of it this way, we can go on a quest for healing instead of dealing with it using a shortcut!

Edit: Changed.. unless you guys have other preferencees? As for the main vote itself, I defer to the thread strategists.

You can't do this until you've actually gone on the Street itself!

Are the secondary masks meant to be voted upon independently of a plan investing potential into the main mask?
And are we suppose to specify where exactly the 24 Potential is suppose to be going into them?

Yes, you can choose their form independently of the Webweaver.

The sub masks are tied to the web Plan I would not take the sub masks without this Potential layout 18 Potential is invested in to social stealth to stay low Heart-Reader is taken to insure that we can use this stealth to scout out any nefarious magics to prevent any mishaps from occurring/allow for stealthy copying of magic as well. The awareness of danger this provides grants time for emergency to be equipped which I believe should help us now more then the healing will for any encounter while injured probably counts as an undesirable encounter with 2 layers of security (scouting/stealth/antimagic of glass and escape of emergency) I don't think it's too greedy to start with Tinkering and with Tinkering we could spec glass into magic research or stealth as needed as well as twisting emergency into some kind of safety detector/danger sense might be possible (broken emergency can teleport us to a safe place with healing I don't think it's impossible to get the Targeting part without breaking it with Tinkering) also Reflections skill copying assists in blending in by letting us copy any skills that not knowing would be suspicious like say basic tech use in a more modern world
Edit moved the Potential invested in master Shaper to Puppeteer due to it fitting better

These are really good stats all around. Physical and Mental are decent but they have their own specialties, Physical has a okay specialty in stamina and Mental has an extreme speciality into Mask Crafting. Social overall is the highest and most well rounded stat.

Being a shapeshifter is useful and become even more useful when you take the MC's social skills into account.

Of all these I'm most interested in Healing and Tinkering. Healing is useful as hell and Tinkering means more Masks.

Heart-Reader is admittedly cool, but according to Birdsie an EFB should be about 15 Import, so I'd rather try to save up unless we get something more interesting or timely.

I think the synergy between Puppeteer and Reflection might be the best thing we can grab without spending Import. We're gonna be meeting lots of people (and have no allies on the Street to begin with) so being able to get a read on them is vital. The mix of Shaper and Puppeteer is great for staying out of trouble, and if we can manage to avoid trouble in the short term then leaning towards Reflection over Antimask makes even more sense.

I'm hoping that the high levels of Puppeteer, Shaper, and Reflection put together make Master Shaper unnecessary (in the short run the goal seems more like blending in generally than impersonating a specific other person, so the minutia shouldn't be nearly as punishing.)
Reflection should make it easier to make use of the various skills and knowledge we discover in our travels as well. Perhaps we can even use it to integrate some of those skills into new Masks?

As for secondary masks Brightwing's A Mask of your own Face seems like a good alternative for getting us recovered, and is generally a pretty neat concept. Crafting is gonna be important so bootstrapping that with a mask seems like an obvious pick. It also lets us try out that idea about making a mask from the street's cobbles sooner.

Lastly it's not clear to me how we're meant to indicate whether or not we want a vote for the secondary mask allocations, but I would like one, so I'm throwing that in as a separate vote as well.

It's ultimately very simple.

Get off, where the Street intersects a part of a world, and you'll be allowed to sample the local color for a while. Practice martial arts under the rising sun with the master cultivators. Offer your skills to an ancient kingdom fighting off an invasion of savage shadow-beasts. Zip on through starlit darkness as part of a voidcraft fighter crew on a bombing run against the evil space empire.

The Street offers opportunity which we might seize with our own efforts.

With the capacity to defend ourselves, heal others and sell our services, we can swiftly make the most of whatever situations we end up finding even as we're healing. I'll freely admit it's worse against immediate esoterics than other options - but given the assassination mask's inherent resistance, and the swiftness of mask changes it's hardly helpless and against most example situations, this build works quite well! I know we missed out on a super aggressive Final Fixation build, but that hardly means we have to be passive at the get go. Let's give ourselves a running start and see what this new world has to offer.

Hm... we want the Healing Mask for obvious reasons, and the Tinker Mask for scaling. (Discord info: Without a Tinkering Mask or other source of Facelessness, Masks themselves don't come into being)

Without the latter, it'll be hard to craft new Masks which means we won't be able to utilize the most powerful part of Dorian's build, his high Mask-crafting score. That means our primary Mask needs to serve a combat purpose, with as much utility as we can pack in without reducing survivability.

[X] Masker of Circumstance
-Distribute Potential in the following manner: Antimask 5, Reflection 15, Heart-Reader 5, Shaper 4 (Sight, Hearing), Puppeteer 11
-[X] Healing
-[X] Tinkering

The combination of Shaper, Puppeteer and Reflection will allow us to throw any battlefield into chaos: mimicking their strongest combatant or commanding officer could even see us taking control of any bandit troupe or tyrant's militia that we run across. The combination of high Reflection and Heart-Reader means that our magical abilities will actually be more convincingly the original's than their own, since theirs will be subject to Antimask!

Magical beasts are unlikely to commit to attacking a being of terrifying sound and mien with magical power seemingly on par with their own. More Antimask would be nice but our Potential is too constrained for that. Master Shaper would be really nice and should be a priority acquisition, but the returns to illusion fidelity (taste costs the same as hearing, really?) are sharply diminishing under this cost regime.

We just need enough initial power to survive, heal and craft a few utility masks. We are able to churn out Potential 10 Masks basically at will once we stabilize; that will allow us to impart peak human performance in any one skill to those we sell to, plus the ability to use said Masks ourselves. In a way, the Tinker mask can be thought of as granting us conditional access to every craftable Mask at Potential 10, which Puppeteer will let us easily switch to... effectively making us a peak human in any one area we require at a time.

High levels of Reflection and Puppeteer make us an excellent closer regardless.

We took this build, now we should seek to maximize its strengths in a prudent and foresighted way. Unfortunately Dorian isn't a character where we can elegantly all-in on any single attribute in the long run; to be a master of circumstance, first one must become jack of many trades. Sales is not about doing one thing amazingly, but many things competently. Even the most proficient showman is useless if he can't close; even the world's greatest closer is worthless without a viable market to sell to.

We need the skills to sell, but also to develop a market and find customers, and survive, and produce worthwhile objects to sell all the while. The rewards of this careful balancing act are great: multiple masks at high Potential which we can then Fixate as necessary, plus all the power, wealth and influencer a mask broker interdimesionally can accrue.

Reflection and Puppeteer are the two Mask I'm most interested in. Reflection since it helps the MC pick up magic and skills. Puppeteer since it boosts social skill and has synergy with the other Masks. Healing and Tinkering are both very useful for survivability and growth.

Discord Info: Heart-Reader is very strong. It allows us to effectively visualize abstract and otherwise-invisible powers like passive super-durability, a wizard's magical Gift, etc. The difference illustrated:

Against a wizard:
*Normal Reflection can copy his individual spells so long as we've seen them
*Heart-Reader can copy his ability to cast spells

Birdsie noted that if the normal Reflection ability was a Sharingan, Heart-Reader can be thought of as a Mangekyo Sharingan. That's how large the gulf in actual utility is between them. Many extremely useful and potent abilities like super-speed, augmented stats, superintelligence etc are abstract, diffuse or otherwise hard to visualize; we would need Heart-Reader to copy any of them.

Take Heart-Reader, or vote for builds that do!

Unless we immediately plan on utilizing anti-magi and power copying immediately, which we don't, we can just make them later. Remember - keep it simple stupid. Putting Potential in fifty things just leaves us with bunch of alright effects. Max out on our talky talky and then craft other masks later.

The only question, for me at least, is if we want to getting Healing or if we want to get Assassination and then try to use our social to get aid after story starts. However there isn't as much to be gain here so I don't think we have much reason to risk.

A highly relevant FB now is better than an EFB of unknown quality later, given our weak starting position. No need to get greedy when our entire build is premised on scaling greed. There are situations where simple heuristics simply fail and this is one of them. Your build is solely reliant on Socialize for safety which means it dies instantly to any threat that it can't socialize with.

Also, Master Shaper costs 13 Potential!

I would encourage you to approval vote for the original plan, especially if you are going to create a separate plan that may leech votes and see its support split... and you should at least copy the text of the plan you're forking. Birdsie could decide to take your plan literally and spend 0 Potential on anything.

Whats and EFB & FB and why do we care about them?

Also @JOEbob could you fix your vote so each line isn't counted separately in the auto tally?

Are we going to face immediate danger though? As long as we don't it doesn't matter if our starting position is weak or not, so strengthening it is a waste of resources.

We either face people in which case we talk or we don't face people in which case we sit and heal and craft. We suffer in case that we instantly run into a monster, but there is no reason to believe that would be what we immediately run into so I would rather not spend energy preparing for such eventuality.
Also, Master Shaper costs 13 Potential!
Thanks.

E: Birdsie, would the build vote for 100p version be roughly similar? Asking for a friend
