New Good Seed and Omake Rule Updates
Good Seed and Omake Spreadsheet Rules:

Firstly, if you have questions about Good Seeds and the like please read here. If that doesn't answer your question please ping me in thread, or on Discord.

If you write a new Good Seed, or write an omake, please update the spreadsheet if you have access.

If you do not have access, please ping a collaborator (Swordomatic, Alectai, Quest, TehChron, Insane-Not-Crazy, Humbaba, ReaderOfFate, Kaboomatic, no., BungieONI) letting them know what you want and they will update the spreadsheet here. To gain access, you will need a gmail account of some kind. Throwaway emails are fine (I'm using one for the spreadsheet), but to gain access it's as simple as sending me either your email via PM, via DM in Discord, or just in Discord's #spreadsheet-requests channel.

This is mandatory. If a Good Seed does not record their omake by pinging collabs (or just requesting access and editing things themselves - this is the preferred option), I won't give out awards. If a new Good Seed is not recorded here, they won't advance. By doing this it makes the whole thing manageable for me - it's gotten pretty unwieldy!

Omake Writer Instructions:

There are four fields you need to fill out.

Omake Link, which is just a link to your first omake for the turn. This makes it easier for me to read them as I do the update - without this it's tough to know off the bat which omake were written this turn, and to properly

Requested Bonus, which is your requested bonus for your omake. You can leave it up to me if you like. You can see more info in the Good Seed infopost here.

Cultivation Aims. For those following unorthodox paths - higher than 9th Heavenstage or later than 7th Dao Pillar paths. Please put in what you are aiming for before you break through. I have left it as 'default'. If you do not edit it, I'll go with that.

Turn Notes - Do you want to do something specific? Enter a Secret Realm? Help the Clan out in some way? If you have something specific you want to accomplish on this turn, put it in turn notes so I can adjust your Fate around it.

All other fields are for QM use to record character information to properly run the flow of the game.

Same, i would really like to see what a collaboration of NK, TS and GD could do, regarding desert improvements or just looking into stuff like the curse vein and the qi draining desert.
We've all got to survive first. They just got a really good amount of land, but Altar Lord thinks they're still backs against the wall. So, we want to do stuff that will improve their survival. Now, Mountain Bell Sect's bell was made by the same person who made the Old Bronzegate, so we might have information the NDA could use to siege them, but that would be kinda like killing them all ourselves. Not a moral choice.

Noble Knowledge probably wants money, if nothing else. Making a deal for poison arts is just good business for both of us.

Nothing we could really do for Time Shatter or Gao. They're not in much danger where they are, off the frontlines with Mountain Bell just kinda holing up.

Antonius Emmanuel Eleanora 56 - [Turn 6] [Qiguai 5: Blademaster]
Antonius Emmanuel Eleanora 56
[Turn 6]
[Qiguai 5: Blademaster]

His body lay sprawled on the cart behind her, his sharp eyes white and glassy, his strong limbs limp and sprawling. Though his axe lay by his side, he had no strength to use it. No strength because of scorpion venom, still running through his veins. It was all her fault. If only she hadn't challenged the Turquoise Scorpion Clan….

Antonius lay on the angled rock face above her, tied to the stone with wires of bronze as Corvina clung next to him and secured him. His left foot was half-eaten, his left hand had been ripped off and so many wounds covered his body - it made her sick. Could she have ever saved him? Could she have even made a difference here?

It had been a scorpion clan assassin who snuck into their camp at night. Somehow, the assassin had burrowed into the ground and the first sign they had was a scorpion tail rising from beneath them and striking him with it's poison sting. She had slain the man instantly, but the damage was done. The large axe-wielder who had been her companion for much of her journey had fallen. Why couldn't she have kept an eye out? Sensed their foe before he struck?

It was the same with Antonius. He'd reached such a state but there was nothing she could do. If she had been faster, could she have saved him from the storm of space that ripped him away from them? Once more, there was nothing she could do. She was just a swordswoman. No, she wasn't even that. She looked at the star-eels swirling in the water under them, ready to attack at any moment.

She had left everything behind to rush the man to the border. The green dragon empire was her Duke's liege and her name had some weight there. If she could just reach it, she might be able to find a healer who might have an antidote. But the scorpion clan barred her path, surrounding them mid-way there and threatening to kill both of them in vengeance for their fallen brother. Even though he had been the one using dishonorable techniques….

"Corvina, the eels are starting to attack us." She said urgently. Could she hear the panic in her voice? "Any plans?" She continued, hoping there was something, anything. For a moment, there was no reply but when it came it was firm.

"I need to heal him," Corvina said, as she began to lay things out from her storage ring. Medicine, needles, threads… things Yahwen wasn't even sure how she'd use. "Guard me?" It was a question, not a statement. They were both unsure, Yahwen realised with a start. An eel jumped from the water and she smacked it aside, wincing as she felt the staff slip on it's skin.

They surrounded them, nearly fifteen of the scorpion clan and she was alone with someone she needed to defend. They were in their home territory and she was in unfamiliar territory. She grit her teeth and raised her sword. Her friend depended on her and she had no choice but to fight them. The first scorpion advanced upon her and her blade struck him like lightning...

Blunt damage wouldn't be enough to kill them, she realised. She needed something more. Yahwen swallowed. "I'll need a weapon," It felt like another person who replied, not Yahwen the Bladeless who feared even the touch of a sword. "Something sharp."

Corvina hesitated, for the slightest moment before she took out her side weapon and threw it at her. Yahwen caught it with her right hand. She felt the weight before she saw the glint of light. As her left hand still held the staff, her right hand tested the motion of the sword, trying to get used to it before the next attack.

Even in this hopeless situation, her blood sang with Sword Qi. Her blade was rain and lightning, Her feet were the wind. All around her was the storm and her mind was it's Eye. She was stung of course, but she cut the poison out. She adapted her arts to better fight and protect. At the end, she was reduced to her last legs but they were reduced to blood and guts.

Yahwen shook her head, bringing her mind to the present. How long had it been? Twenty years? Thirty? It felt like another life. Yahwen had considered how it would feel like to wield a blade again after so many years. Would the sword qi in her body sing in response? Would she be afraid of it and drop it as if it had burnt her? It really felt just like a lump of steel in her hands and holding it just made her feel strangely awkward.

Yahwen had favored the Jian before she had given up her sword. This was a gladius, favored by golden devils as their side-arm. Hers was longer and curved, built for slicing versus the gladius which was short and straight meant more to be paired with a shield than to be used on it's own. It was nothing like she was used to.

It wouldn't have made a difference to the version of her that died so long ago. She'd probably have gone 'But it was still a sword' and somehow made it work. Where did she get that boundless surety? Had it just been because she didn't know how to look back? After a thought, she smashed her staff into the rock face, lodging it firmly and then settled into a low stance.

Corvina twitched at the sound but didn't look up from her work. Yahwen took a moment to study the eels. They were causing the water to roil with their frenzy. Stealing Antonius had really seemed to set them off. It was hard to say if they had sensed them and were preparing to attack or if most of them were still just looking for them.

Another jumped out of the water and though she wasn't sure, Yahwen wondered if it was the same one as before. They were both tough, slippery and their star shaped heads somehow gave them a degree of control in the air. She shifted the weight of her lower body and used it to generate a slicing blow.

It was a form from the Fourth Kata: Lightning of her Storm Cloud Style. The fourth kata was composed entirely of strong, fast finishing blows and in a moment, the sword penetrated it's body and cut it into two. As the eel's two halves fell into the water, Yahwen winced at her motions. It was a simple technique, barely utilising sword qi and it had been terrible.

She took a moment to observe the waters where the star-eels seemingly avoided their fallen kin. She had hoped that they might eat each other, but it seemed like she wasn't that lucky. She sighed and her mind went back to her rusty fighting style.

The more powerful techniques were inspired by tribulation lightning hence the name and many said that she had come close to the real thing. If she used that, she was certain she could have slain a number of eels with just the aftershock. Unfortunately, most of those techniques were currently beyond her. Not when she lacked the focus needed to use her Blade Will.

Her mind went back to the meditations and focus techniques that she utilized so long ago. She let her qi extend from her skin like a warm shroud around her body and with a breath, she took all of her feelings - her fears, her worries, her anger and her annoyances and she pushed them out of her. They went into her aura, causing it to toil and twist as it filled with her emotion.

The storm is unreadable and unrelenting, a discordance of only emotion and power. However, at its heart is always the eye.

The First Kata: Storm Cloud supposedly made it hard to read her and let her trick her enemy into making a false move by misreading the chaotic shroud formed from her every urge and emotion. Truly, it had been born from a meditation technique and learning to hold in battle had been what had inspired her 'Eye of the Storm' fighting style.

Against the star-eels, the technique itself wouldn't be helpful. They were far too mindless to trick with fients and it wasn't as if she could move out of the way with Corvina and Antonius behind her. However, as the fish below her began to move even faster from her technique she realised that it still distracted them. She forced the shroud wider in the hopes that it might hide those behind her.

The movement in the waters changed as every eel was suddenly aware of her presence. An enterprising eel leapt out to attack her and she intercepted it with her sword. Rather than cut it, she let it hit the flat of the blade and then let it slip back into the water, using its own advantages against it

The wind flows in many forms, sometimes a caressing breeze and other times a punishing gale. It forms the path the cloud will follow.

The Second Kata: Gale emphasized manipulating her weight and combining that with step techniques to be able to move blindingly fast. It let her move in any position and gave her incredible mastery over her body. But weight manipulation was tricky after so long and as she couldn't move, the vast majority of the forms of this kata was useless. These skills were made for duels and were never designed with anyone in mind but herself.

But this wasn't the first time she had faced this situation. Many Axe Breaker required her to stand and protect him too. She had adapted the technique of another then. The Wood Style of the one who defeated her, had been the Cerulean Duke's son. In their first duel, he had planted his feet and weathered her storm at times like a powerful oak and at others like a weed that could bend. It was optimal for a duel where your opponent had to engage you, but in hindsight it was also meant to defend others.

She planted her feet and gripped the rock with her qi. The mastery of motion that let her move so swiftly and the step techniques that improved her grip could also be used to modify the trajectory of others. Almost immediately, the rest of the eels began to attack. Rather than cut them, again she drew upon the movement she had perfected bare moments ago and began to use her sword to manipulate their trajectory.

Slicing them would take too long at her current level of strength and trying to keep up with all of the eels would drive her to exhaustion. The same movements with a touch more control would ensure that she preserved her energy and that the only thing they could get their teeth into was each other.

That was in the end, the numerous blows of her Third Kata: Rainfall. It was a flurry of blows emphasizing speed and control over the raw blinding power of lightning. It took only a minor adaptation to transform it from slicing blows to deflecting ones. It reminded her of the Fifth Kata: Thunder - a set for feints and parries. But that was designed for duels and weapons, not the many creatures she currently faced.

The Sixth Kata: Sunbeam was similarly designed to distract a single opponent and ambush them from their blindspot. But there was another technique, developed after a situation just like this one where she had to face multiple opponents to protect a friend, that slowly came to her mind.

The Seventh Kata: Hail was only theoretical. It was an absurd technique that combined the power and speed of Lightning with the control and dexterity of Rain. She'd used it once, when she faced the scorpions to protect her friend but that had been on instinct. She had never managed to perform it again. If she could have them both, then she wouldn't have created separate techniques for them.

It was meant to be used when her back was to the wall and there was no choice but to hit with everything she had. She needed to push herself beyond her ability but she'd never really developed the ability after she'd given up her sword and she certainly didn't know a technique designed to push her limits like it'd require. Except….

"Bamboo Cutting Blade." One swing, with death-defying strength and speed. Enough to cut a spear sprouting from the ground.

And the staff was cut.

The Spirit Bamboo in the lands of the Shimmering Soup Sect grew so fast and strong, they could spear even a Core Formation Elder. To cut it in Qi Condensation, required one to be able to predict their growth correctly and even then one needed incredible focus sharpened by risking death to bring out all of one's strength in a single strike - That was the Bamboo Cutting Sword that Tan Huo had demonstrated in their second duel.

A giggle bubbled out of her as her mind composed a form of the Seventh Kata that may well be usable here and now. The sword in her hand suddenly felt familiar to her, not like just another staff that just happened to be made by metal. She suddenly realised what was wrong with her - a sword was meant to cut, not to simply deflect like she had been doing with her staff.

And yet.

She hesitated.

"Corvina," She said, carefully between blows. "Kill all. But tired. Worth?"

She felt the seer spare her a moment's attention. "I have spirit stones and recovery pills." She paused and then when she spoke, it sounded like she had something in her mouth. A thread or a needle? "We'll have to run back anyway, so attention doesn't matter. Do it."

It was good enough.

The best idea was one that led to all their enemies being gone. Because a single slip meant they'd get her and then Antonius and Corvina were next.

Her body went slack.

A star-eel jumped to her throat and in the moment before she would have died, her instincts took over. Her blade sliced through the air with all of her strength and the moment the sword penetrated it's body, the shroud of qi building around her discharged outwards, charring it even as she sliced it in two and the sheer force sent all of the eels in the air flying away from her.

The wrath of heaven made manifest.

She felt the exhaustion that came from using Lightning at close to full power. The earth pulled on her, it made her body heavy and chilled her muscles as she forced herself to move. And then an eel jumped from the water, it's long body moving not towards her but the ones behind her, now not shielded by her shroud.

An urgency gripped her, and then she moved and then did it again.

The raindrops drizzle down like so many blades.

And then again. And then again. And then again. She felt a grin on her face as she moved again and again and again, a long-forgotten routine coming up back up inside of her as she moved with a strength and speed that surpassed anything that she had ever produced before.

Heavy and unending, the hail falls. They will break upon its endless barrage.

A violent downpour of power and perfection - that was the Sixth Kata: Hail. It was perfect. Perfect. Something she had never achieved before on demand. She gloried in the skills it allowed her, despite the exhaustion that clawed at her. Her barrage continued until her body began to ache and finally her flow of qi faltered.

Her grip on the side of the rock was suddenly gone as she remembered it was angled. As she fell, her hand went up and she grabbed the staff that was still embedded in the rock. If the staff hadn't been there, she'd have fallen into the waters below. Did I know I was going to do this from the very beginning? The thought somehow unsettled her.

With the last of her strength, she pulled herself up and plopped herself on it, barely able to move.

"Yahwen?" Corvina asked cautiously. Yahwen looked up at her and gave her a smile. Without looking up from Antonius, Corvina tossed her a pouch. It landed on her staff and she rushed to catch it before it fell into the water. She carefully opened it to find the pill and a spirit stone she had mentioned. "It won't fix you completely, but they should fix you enough to keep up."

Yahwen looked them over carefully before eating the pill and then slowly began to draw the energy from the spirit stone. She felt power return to her limbs and the pain slowly began to fall away. "How long do we have?" She asked, looking at the water, now red with blood.

"Minutes." Corvina replied, as she finished the final stitches.

"Right." She thought for a second before hefting her sword up. "Corvina, here."

Corvina paused in her work and turned to her for a moment. "Are you sure you don't want it? It's not like I'm going to be using it." She said with forced cheer.

"I don't think I want it anymore." Yahwen said, trying to put into words why she didn't want it. "It came back too easily. It... it unnerves me."

Corvina thought for a moment and then nodded. "We won't need to fight much on the way back anyway." She replied, taking a hold of the blade. It didn't budge. "Yahwen? You want to let it go?" Corvina pulled and Yahwen didn't have the strength to resist as she took it away. "Yahwen, are you alright?"

"I am," Yahwen replied, forcing herself to her feet. She took a deep breath and slapped herself in the face. Then she tried to move her tired muscles. Not the best, but good enough. "I can carry him if you want?" She offered, nodding at Antonius.

Corvina looked at her for a moment before nodding. "Don't worry, I've got this." Corvina said, removing a marble from her storage and pressed to Antonius' body. It expanded until it enveloped Antonius before it shrunk back down, causing Yahwen to widen her eyes. "We should move now."

"Right." Yahwen said, reaching out to her staff. She took a deep breath and pulled it out. Just like that it was back in her hand. It wasn't the staff she had fought with so long, but it still shouldn't feel so wrong in her hands. "Let's go."

Corvina nodded slowly and then they took off.

Out of this place and back home.

realease a plague that strenghens the mortals? or has a similar effect as the blood darkening array. the possibilities are endless, really.

Unleashing plagues that turn millions of mortals into zombies is a big no bueno for me
No accounting for taste. Well, how about a Fate-cursing poison? Will work on Great Circle Core Elders or your money back!

Seriously, they're knowledge-seekers, they're not limited to zombie plagues. They also have a track record of killing Nascent Souls.

Noble Knowledge Sect:

"Secrets are not for others to keep from us."

The Noble Knowledge Sect believes all knowledge is noble and worthy, no matter how it is obtained. Diviners, those practising curses, and those researching poisons train inside the Insidious Poison Maze, a massive maze containing cities, towns and villages, defended by poisonous traps and diviniations of foul intent of many kinds.

The Noble Knowledge Sect find it easy to ferret out the secrets of of others, and often used their divination techniques in combination with poisons to kill enemies far above their level, often to assist their allies in the Demonic Altar Sect. Many mortals had their fate altered to horror, or poisons who's effects sickened even the hardiest cultivators when they saw them used on mortals. Initially the Righteous Sects merely suppressed them, killing them as they left their borders. The Noble Knowledge Sect took this poorly, and struck against the Strength Purity Sect in an attempt to refocus attention away from them and onto a now-weakened northern front.

The third Nascent Soul elder from the Strength Purity Sect falling in a thousand years was enough, and the Poison-Crushing War began.

Six Nascent Souls elders from various Sects attacked, and were all brought low in the Insidious Poison Maze, a growth that expanded every year. Three dead, two crippled, and one mad. Assaulting the Noble Knowledge Sect seemed implausible, and so the various Righteous Powers settled in, and agreed that the Poison-Crushing War should become the Poison-Crushing Siege. Noble Knowledge cultivators were slain outright on leaving their borders, and allowing one to escape was a demerit for the surrounding powers. Sometimes they bribe their guards and escape, but it is rare for them to be able to leave their fortifications and enter the world at large - the Righteous Path will not allow poisons of such strength and ease of application to be brought into the world and made widespread again.

If you're willing to directly kill tens of millions by consigning them to a fate worse then death for the sake of inconveniencing your foes, you're welcome to it

My only interest in siding with them was with looking towards putting them into the ground ourselves down the line, not actually getting in bed with them for real

I'm all for pragmatism in the face of a larger good, but you're just advocating siding with the malicious for it's own sake.

Antonius Emmanuel Eleanora 57 - [Turn 6] [Qiguai 6: Fight Scene]
Mostly just wrote this because I felt like writing something. Hopefully, it was nice.

Antonius Emmanuel Eleanora 57
[Turn 6]
[Qiguai 6: Fight Scene]

Rushing through the Qiguai Secret Realm, their presence wasn't subtle at all. Qi surged out of their bodies as they freely burned spirit stones in order to jump past the islands into the coral mounds. Corvina could sense attention upon them and the presences of many others around them take notice and begin to move towards the two of them.

She focused on the path, remembering the places they passed by and the many hazards they encountered. Many of the creatures were territorial and for those that weren't… her eyes went to a giant seagull diving towards them. It was at Foundation Establishment and if it reached them, they would be no match for it.

She signalled to Yahwen and they both ducked as the tongue of a toad shot out and intercepted the gull mid-dive. The Gull flared it's wings in order to stop it's fall but the tongue continued to try and pull it down. Neither saw the struggle, instead rushing past it into safer territories. Into territories that were likely filled with Righteous Cultivators who would be happy to kill a lone golden devil.

"Look at that skin!" A sound came besides from them, startling them both. "She's a golden devil!" Corvina turned to see a man running beside her, holding a large sword across his shoulders and giving her a grin. His aura flared at the seventh heavenstage in challenge.

"Wasn't there some secret realm where if you presented their body, you would gain a blessing of karma?" A girl's voice came. Corvina's voice whipped to the side to see a girl with white make-up and a long sleeved formal dress running next to Yahwen. Both her arms were tucked in her sleeves, as hidden as her aura and she nocked her head at Yahwen curiously. "What's up with her? She doesn't have devilskin."

Yahwen tensed as their attention fell upon her. Before either of them could react, there was a smashing sound in front of them as a third cultivator wearing two stone gauntlets landed in front of them, smashing the wet ground and forming a crater. The aura of one in the ninth heavenstage surged out of him as he smirked at them confidently, forcing them to stop.

"Who cares?" The swordsman replied, jumping over to another mound to their left and spreading out, trying to cut off their routes of escape. "If she associates with devils, then she's probably a devil herself. Maybe if we got her too we'd get some extra blessings?"

Corvina looked at them carefully and then just activated a talisman hidden in her person. Wind Qi surged through her body and she felt a gust form at her back. Before any of them could react, she jumped past a small opening between them and ran through.

For a moment, shock ran through the three righteous cultivators as they saw the space the golden devil stood in and then at the opening she had taken to run past. Then the gauntleted man laughed. "Heavens, you really can't trust a devil can you?" He said, looking at Yawhen and smashed his gauntleted arms together. "She just left you here with us."

Yahwen tightened her fist for a second, feeling the soreness of her body. "No," She replied, holding her staff with both hands. It's strangeness in her arms still annoyed her. "She left you here with me."

Before they could react, Yahwen moved. "What-?" Both girl and swordsman reacted, the girl removed her hands from sleeves while retrieving paper talismans that burst into flames while the swordsman simply held up his sword. Yahwen however went straight towards the cocky brawler who was right in front of her. Before he could react, Yahwen stabbed his throat with the butt of her staff and let him crumble to the ground.

She felt heat on her back and quickly turned, spinning her staff to make the flames disperse. The swordsman took that moment and jumped at her, drawing his sword up high to give an overhead slice, thinking that she was distracted.

"You dare!?" He shouted, eyes hot with fury but Yahwen just grimaced at his sword. She leaned forward and shifted the angle of her staff, letting it hit his hand as he sliced down and forced him to drop his sword. Before he could react, Yahwen punched him directly in the kidney, causing him to double over and fall into the ground.

As he forced himself to rise, Yahwen picked up his sword and looked at it with a frown. Then with all of her strength, she stabbed it next to him causing it to shatter. The swordsman froze, shivered and fell unconscious. She then turned on the woman who looked at her with wide eyes.

"Forgive me," She exclaimed, dropping to the ground and bowing. "I had eyes, but I-" A smack on her head with the staff left her sprawling on the ground. She considered the woman - based upon the intensity of the flames and overall strength, she was fifth heavenstage at most though incredibly good at hiding her power.

She looked them over and sighed. That hadn't been nearly as cathartic as she'd hoped. She turned in the direction of Corvina, clearly visible by the amount of qi she was using. The Wind-Swept Charm apparently gave a powerful initial burst of speed but quickly slowed down afterwards. She was still running twice as fast as normal.

Well, she was a golden devil. Yahwen was certain she could catch up fairly quickly despite their differences in distance. That's why she'd been left behind, after all. After a last look at their bodies for anything worthwhile to pick up, which was nothing, she turned and ran.

They'd be at the Doorway soon.

This is uncharitable.

  1. I'm not.
  2. My interest isn't in getting into bed with them.
  3. I'm not.

I could, you know, make a big fancy post but eh.

I completely understand those who vote yes. It's a good deal, it's interesting, it's dramatic, it's cool as hell.

It's not necessarily mechanically worse than the other option.

But, in a quest, I vote for what I want to read, and what I want to see. Most of the time, this is what I think is best for the character or faction I, along with others, play as.

This time, I'm simply not comfortable breaking faith, nor am I willing to abet in this frankly unmatched level of blatant slaughter for those uninvolved, as that is likely what is going to happen if the "Righteous" lose the war.

Is what it is, really. No hard feelings, I hope, but these are my own principles, I guess. This would ordinarily be a difficult question, but this is a quest! So I get to vote how I want.

Antonius Emmanuel Eleanora 58 - [Turn 6] [After-action Report]
This is pretty much just an excuse to do a pseudo-good seed report. Still, it serves as an adequate ending for the Turn 6 omakes and I'll probably continue with Turn 7/8 stuff next turn.
Antonius Emmanuel Eleanora 58
[Turn 6]
[After-action Report]

Acting Legate Ariadne,

As you asked, I have collected the information on the party of four that included Corvina Taurus and Antonius Ambrosius. The journey was something unique and I could perhaps fill a hundred thousand words with what happened but in the interest of time, I have summarised the final fate of each of their individual journeys below.

Antonius Ambrosius

Fate -
Antonius Ambrosius, last name after his grandfather over the common convention of taking the father's name among legionnaires without a dynasty, had the worst fate among the four. Upon entering the Qiguai Secret Realm, the four encountered a sea of warped space that nearly killed him. He was barely saved by Corvina Taurus who had tied the four together with bronze threads who pulled him back, turning death into simply horrific wounds. Unfortunately, Corvina simply got his arm and the rest of his body was lost in the secret realm.

Based upon the report by others, he seems to have regained a sliver of consciousness while bleeding in the Qiguai Waters. He seems to have used his treasures to seal his wounds and then travel to safety. In his injured state he went towards the feeling of sea caves which he had grown accustomed to in the Yuan Secret Realm. In the Qiguai Secret Realm, this unfortunately meant danger and he was swarmed by a school of Star-Eels that chewed away part of his left foot and two toes.

He was rescued by Legionnaire Corvina Taurus and the Auxiliary Yahwen who ventured back into the Secret Realm after their own harrowing experience and sought his body out. They performed first aid on his body, likely only successful due to Legionnaire Corvina's expensive pills and familiarity with his body while the Auxiliary slew the Star-Eels. He is currently under the care of Legate Seneca who we have asked to get him to aid his healing. Unfortunately, barring incredible luck he is likely to require decades before he is fully healed.

Corvina Taurus

Fate -
The sea of warped space was seemingly caused by the barriers within the secret realm shifting. Instead of being torn apart, dying, and the like, they found the sort of luck that hasn't been seen since Rina Callista had met a Spirit Severing fragment there. This was more than that. They found herself torn into a whorl of space, into a part of the Realm she should have not been able to reach at all. The Nascent Soul Qiguai Secret Realm. There, rather than encounter death and disaster, they encountered a legion standard - the former banner of the 1178th Legion, named "Through Innumerable Deaths, Unshaken".

That Legion was in fact during our inception, incorporated into our own 96th legion after it's leaders were lost in the Qiguai Secret Realm. The Nascent Soul who owned the banner seemed to have carved it into a spear in order to fight a Devil Bee Nascent Soul. The three witnessed both Nascent Souls rise again and fight before the Golden Devil Nascent Soul sent them back out. Though it is sad that Corvina could not claim the banner-pole for herself, it was unlikely due to the rivalry between our ancestor Ariadne, your namesake and Teleos who owned the banner. He is technically also one of our ancestors though he would not likely know it as Corvina Taurus is not descended from his branch of our family.

She did however gain a Navigation Compass created by Ariadne, reportedly lost but now known to be simply stolen by her rival. It is designed to amplify one's esoteric senses, increasing the sensory capability of those who use it while being especially effective for Seers. Examination has revealed that it is infused with our Ancestor's Dao - The Ties That Bind All Creation. As you cultivate her dao, we have temporarily taken custody of it, with the legionnaire's permission of course in the hopes that it will aid your coming tribulation. We will divert an increased number of resources in her direction in exchange.

After leaving the Qiguai Secret Realm, she negotiated passage into it once more and travelled through in order to rescue Legionnaire Antonius. It should be noted that in order to do so, she traded a Jade Slip of her memories in the Nascent Soul Secret Realm which should be noted as a potential vulnerability in her file. Psychological examination has also shown an increased perfectionist streak likely caused due to exposure to Teleos and his Dao of Perfection. It is recommended she be kept back from combat roles and focused on support such as array-engineering or divination for a few decades under supervision in order to ensure she learns how to channel this in a healthy manner.

Xiao Yingzi

Fate -
Xiao Yingzi is the one who claimed what she is calling The Legion-Banner Spear. In her report, it is described as having the legion motto written across it along with the name of every single elder who stood as Legate for the Legion is inscribed on the spear. Interestingly, much like our own Labyrinth Spool it has fragments of thousands of Core Formation elders wills suffusing it - with a single Nascent Soul will binding them together. It seems to have functioned as an enhancer for formations but that function has been damaged after Elder Teleos carved it's end into a spear to use in battle.

It offers great power indeed, granting the legionnaire dramatically increased skill and insight. Infused with the Dao of Perfection, the spear edge can shatter barriers and pierce enemies even in Core Formation. It remains to be seen what it's full abilities will be as Xiao Yingzi is too weak to use it at its full potential but none other than Xiao Yingzi can seem to use it. She also discovered the Soul Farseer - a telescope carved from high-grade Spirit Stones. It has similar abilities to the Navigation Compass, likely a prototype of the Elder Teleo's own take on it. It allows her to see the strength of enemies even in Foundation Establishment from far away.

She chose not to enter the Qiguai Secret Realm a second time, which is understandable given her fortune. However, it should still be noted in her file just in case it may be a part of a larger trend. As part of her journey there, she was also pushed to the sixth heavenstage though her meridians were damaged and while they heal, she seems to be collecting the resources needed to quickly cultivate to the Ninth Heavenstage. Even if things do not go as she plans, she would still be a tremendous asset to our Taurus Family. It is recommended she be reached out to in order to recruit her as an asset.

Yahwen

Fate -
The auxiliary showed great loyalty in accompanying Legionnaire Corvina Taurus in order to rescue Legionnaire Antonius Ambrosius. When travelling through the Nascent Soul Realm, she gained the Perfect Carving Knife - a bronze knife infused with the Dao of Perfection and capable of carving anything below a certain level of toughness. It is what was likely used to create the Soul Farseer and while useful in combat, it is primarily used for crafting.

Auxiliary Corvina seems to also have been affected by the Dao of Elder Teleos and is cognizant of that fact. She seems to have retired - hopefully temporarily - to a small village within our territory where she has built her own home with the aid of the locals and makes her living selling wooden carvings to those who live there. The wooden carvings seem to be an adequate channel for the effects of the dao and it is likely she will master it before long.

As a reward for her loyalty, we have arranged for deliveries of enough spirit stone to maintain her cultivation. After reviewing her history, it is likely that this is not simple retirement and may even serve as preparation for her breakthrough in which case light contact should be maintained in order to ensure she will be an asset once she does so. Should she not show major progress in a few decades, we can review her fate and decide if we must begin cutting resources allotted to her.

So, a fun thing I noticed, even if No seems to have a solid lead.

The persistent error that seems to match the other attempts on Heaven is that they ultimately boiled down to--as far as we can tell--manfighting it eventually. Accumulate atrocious levels of power and then attempt to force Heaven to do what you want. Which fails because once a single entity or polity reaches a certain tipping point, it seems the entire universe collapses on them and they fall to ruin. Certainly, Demonic Soup Chef seems to have failed at changing anything aside from creating another route that literally demands other people pay for your own evolution.

Manuel's approach--and in some ways, the approach of the Modern iteration of the Golden Devils--seems to operate through Subverting Heaven instead, playing by narratives and approaches it's not properly equipped to react to. And since Heaven can only act 'Reactively' it appears (Certainly, its not in the habit of squashing threats in the cradle), even if it realizes it's being subverted... It can't actually act against that subversion as long as it doesn't impair its overall functioning.

Hence, the Shadow.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Shadow was implemented while the Sea Conquering Army was doing it's big thing to draw Heaven's Eye to them--while the Shadow was implemented as a backdoor to slowly alter Heaven's function from under it's nose. But the SCA crossed the line too quickly (Or otherwise triggered a response they weren't yet in a position to counter), and the Shadow was largely suppressed and forced into a holding action since--but it's been gaining power because We have been acting in tune with it, subverting the standard logic of the setting and telling tales that aren't just about "Gather power at all costs to be The Best There Ever Was".

I suspect that too is an endgoal--to make the Shadow strong enough that it can fully blind the Heavens here, and give us room to start spreading its influence further... And since the Heavens can't move proactively...

Maria 17 - First Assignment (Part Two of Four)
First Assignment (Part Two of Five)
Maria Turn 9 Fifth Omake

Trip through the Colossus Footsteps had been… unpleasant. To say the fucking least. The war had the blacksmiths on edge, every one of them dancing back and forth between spoiling for a fight and running back up into their mountains and locking every door behind them till we all forgot who they were. Not a good mood to find anyone in, but a particularly bad look on old enemies kept in check by peace treaties and fuck-all else. I'd had to keep tight leashes on the squad's necks the whole damn way, and tighter on my own.

Enemies, the Red Place grumbled. Enemies with power.

There's a treaty.

Words on paper. If that.

I pinched my nose. Listen. You want some violence? Enough waiting on the battlefield to fill your gullet till it bursts. But you get greedy now, I'll have to lock you somewhere dark without a view.

Couldn't take me if you tried.

Sure of that?

There was a moment, charged with sparks, and then the Red Place pulled back into the deeper recesses of my skull, muttering all the while. Third time I'd had to have that argument that day. There'd probably be a fourth.

"Everything… alright?" asked Letha, shooting me a worried glance. We were settled on the roof of the wagon, the driver's seat in front of us and the scorpion team in front of that, scuttling forward on piston-legs at a steady, unending pace. The squad were inside the carriage, windows drawn on my orders to keep them from making eye contact with some blacksmith whelp and picking a fight no-one'd win.

I nodded, sighing.

"Fine. The Red Place."

"Ah."

I could see her trying not to ask questions, at that. She was a good girl, was Letha, but Heaven's shite, she pried like she breathed. It had taken years at Three Frogs to get her to stop picking at me, and even then she'd only really stopped because I broke down and told her. I'd thought she'd be scared, or disgusted maybe. Instead, she'd been fascinated. It was only politeness stopping her from interrogating me now.

Still, not much else to do now except lose to her at Ludus again. Suppose she'd earned it.

"Go on," I said, smiling crookedly. "Ask."

It was like I'd just stuffed every healing herb in the world down her throat in one go. She leaned forward, intent and excited.

"It speaks to you, you said?"

"Yeah."

"What does it sound like?"

...First question and I was already stumped. I made myself think about it for a moment before giving up.

"Red."

"...It sounds red."

"Yeah. Don't ask me to explain, I can't. It just… when I hear it, it's…"

"Red?"

"Yeah."

She considered that for a moment.

"Well, what's it like, then?"

"...A voice in my head, and then sometimes when it's in control it's like the inside of a house made out of red stone-"

"No, I know that. What's it like as a person?"

I frowned at her.

"It's not a person."

"But it has a personality, doesn't it? Things it likes, things it doesn't?"

Maybe I should have just taken the loss at Ludus. They say you can find peace in failure.

"...Yeah. Suppose it does."

"So what's it like?"

I felt the Place's attention focus on me again, just to make it worse.

"Angry," I said eventually. "Very, very angry. And- I don't know. Likes to keep its guard up. Assumes everyone's after us, one way or another."

Letha looked wounded.

"Even me?"

The day I'm wary of her is the day she deserves to kill us, rumbled the Place, amused.

"Not you now," I said, trying not to laugh. "Didn't much like you when we met."

That seemed to mollify her a little. Long years of friendship had led us to decide that clearly we'd have gotten along famously if only Adonia hadn't been there when we met. Completely unfair of us, sure, but I didn't much care.

"What about besides that? Does it like certain foods? Music? Or games? Does it play Ludus, or- or cards, or anything like that?"

"No," I said. "Not that it's told me, at least."

Letha frowned at me. "You've never asked?"

...Really should have gone with the Ludus. Still, timing was on my side for once; the caravan trundled at last through the final rocky outcrop of foothills of the mountains, and our envoys awaited. The 302nd had sent on a column to meet us. Forty legionnaires, clad in bronze, stood in tight formation. All around us, the hodge-podge of merchants, courtesans, peddlers, travelers, itinerant cultivators and all-purpose ne'er-do-wells tensed like rabbits in front of foxes.

Me, though? I just thanked every god that ever stood against heaven that Letha had to shut up for a few minutes.

"AVE!" I bellowed, as our wagon came to a halt, and vaulted off the roof. "Imperator's blessings! Who's the commander?"

"I am," said one of them. Short fucker, broad, built like a ram. "Septimus Outi. You'd be Maria, I'm guessing."

"The hair, right? Gives me away. This," I said, pointing back at the carriage, "is Letha Economos. You know what to do with her, I'm guessing. The rest of them are my squad, and they WILL BE FORMING UP RIGHT NOW IF THEY DON'T WANT ME TO CONFISCATE THEIR FUCKING LUNGS!"

Septimus raised an amused eyebrow.

"Dawnfresh?"

"As the morning dew, yeah."

"Cute."

My squad had tumbled out of the carriage and dropped into rank with only the mildest hint of panic. Barring Draconis, who'd moved like oiled silk, but you can't win them all.

"They're good fighters," I said, turning back. "Looking forward to getting blooded. We start off now, or-"

"Calm down, captain," said Septimus. "The war won't end before you get there, trust me. We're waiting on a few others."

I frowned.

"Thought we were the only Devils coming through just yet?"

"You forget this is a coalition? Strength Purity's popular. We're to wait for them to join us here, along with a few columns from the other powers."

...Wonderful. Letha was stalking towards me with one of her more predatory "I-am-your-best-friend-and-this-is-for-your-own-good" looks on her face. Did they really have to hand her the time to really start digging into me, too?

"Well then, Centurion, if I might borrow the captain-" she began winsomely, but then a legionnaire saved my life.

"Maria like… Lady Maria? From Three Frogs?"

Oh thank Gods.

"Yeah, that's me," I said, grinning. Septimus turned to shoot his chatty subordinate an unimpressed look, but not fast enough.

"I saw your play! You're a legend! Did you really hold the breach alone?"

...Legend. I could get behind that. Especially with how it made Draconis's face wrinkle like a scorpion just shat on his sandals.

"For a little while. Though the poison did most of the work."

"And what happened with the mysterious Fan Prince Whose Eyes Were As Scarlet Mirrors?"

There was a long pause.

"Sorry, say that last part again?"

"The Fan Prince Whose Eyes Were As Scarlet Mirrors. Did he kill his traitorous brother? Did he return to the secret town in the shadows of the forest? What about the Fox Gaoler, did he ever become mayor? Which one did you marry? Or did they marry each other? I got kind of a vibe between-"

"Legionnaire. Shut up." Septimus was clearly very good at leadership. You could barely hear the laughter he was suppressing. Letha, behind me, was doing notably less well at that. That play. I was very, very clearly going to have to find out about that play. Possibly with a sharp object. Or several. And a fire.

"You said we're waiting for people, do we have an ETA?"

Septimus smirked.

"Any minute now."

"Great."

The next hour was not any minute. Not even close. Any minute is not underscored by Letha asking probing questions about the Four Battles and Three Romances of Lady Maria, and snickering at the answers. They also didn't involve quite so many violent fantasies about teaching stupid playwrights a lesson, or threatening the mayor of a minor municipality with a brick.

But at last, a plume of dust on the horizon closed in enough to reveal a dozen men and women in the white robes of the Strength Purity sect, striding towards us. Behind them was a mad cohort of gods only knew how many different uniforms, weapons, and species; every single cultivator in virtuous flipper seemed represented.

The Strength Purity stopped ten feet from us, and bowed at the waist, fists cupped in their palms. A martial salute. Septimus whistled, and the rest of us came to attention.

"Skull-Shatterer," he said, stepping forward. One of the SPS mirrored him, a tall woman with her hair cut long. Had to be a nightmare in a fight.

"Septimus. You look well."

"I look like shit, is what I look like. Thought you Righteous types didn't go in for lying."

"We make exceptions for when friends run themselves ragged in our defence." She dragged him into a hug, and he let her.

...Huh. Chummier than I'd expected.

"So what other idiots have you convinced?" asked Septimus, as they pulled apart again. "I can see some Bears back there."

He was right. Four or five massive black bears were milling about at the bag of Skull-Shatterer's… circus, and a handful of people riding them. They cheered raggedly as we looked at them.

"Congratulations, you are not completely blind. Yes. The Bear Enslavement Sect have sent a few more of their heavy cavalry. We also have a cohort from the Great Drunkards-"

Three or four dozen men and women, visibly drunk and swaying, gave a braying shout that might, theoretically, count as a cheer if you were feeling generous, although they were undercut by one of them asking if they served peanuts.

"-a few Joyous Blacksmiths-"

Two tall women, clad head to toe in lunatic panoplies of spirit steel, raised their weapons in silence.

"-and… some additional support from the Divine Sabre Palace."

The entire unit froze. I didn't realise that I'd slipped my spear into a fighting grip until Letha's hand clutched my wrist and squeezed till her knuckles went white. Fifteen cultivators, dressed in the flowing lilac robes of the Divine Sabre Palace, pushed to the front of the rabble. Each one had a sneer etched onto their face that set my temper boiling.

"Charmed to make your acquaintance," said one. His hair was long enough to reach his calves, brushed out straight, shining in the sunlight. His moustache was equally well-groomed, brushing his chest with its length. He stroked it with a finger and smiled. "I am Cao Pai Mei. We are honoured to join our mighty Blade Pact in this war on the wretched demons."

Letha's hand tightened again. I made myself breathe out, long and slow, and tried not to picture his head coming apart in my hands.

"As well," said Skull-Shatterer swiftly, before anyone said anything else and someone lost their temper (or a limb), "we have those honourable seekers of the dao who cultivate alone. In particular, I'd like-"

"What got you shiny bastards out of the desert?"

I thought, for a moment, that one of the Divine Sabres had given in to their personal death wish, but after I managed to calm the homicidal rush enough to actually pay attention again, I realised who the culprit actually was; a middle aged woman in a red and gold dress, her hair starting to grey and her skin bearing the heavy tan of a desert dweller. Flames kept flickering around her fingertips, and she glared at us like a schoolteacher looking at their most recalcitrant students.

"You've never paid much mind to what happens outside your borders before, what's changed? Hmm? Did someone finally point out that, perhaps, it might be best to stop the homicidal blood path monsters before they slaughter us all?"

"We've been busy," I growled. Her eyes fixed on me. "With the cannibal sect. You may have heard of them?"

"Oh, they aren't even in the same league," she sniffed. "And well you know it. This entire-"

"You're from Xin," said Letha, blankly. The woman stopped. "Aren't you? You're a sorcerer. What are you doing here?"

"What is required to keep the world safe. For longer than you, I feel compelled-"

"Shanshu!" Skull-Shatterer's voice cracked into the conversation like a whip into flesh. "That is quite enough." The sorcerer- Shanshu- went silent. But she shot me a mutinous glare first, and I had to fight down the red place before I did something stupid.

There was a little cough from the crowd. Quiet little noise, barely above a whisper, but somehow it carried through everything and we all stilled our tongues to look for its source. Skull-Shatterer recovered quickly.

"As I was saying, I'd like to introduce the Honourable Sibling."

"A pleasure," said the cougher. They stood just a hair under six foot, clad in sleeveless black robes and a ragged cloth mantle wrapped around their shoulders, the collar stopping just below their nose. They'd shaved their head smooth, and a jagged scar, long healed, ran down their forehead, over a dull white eye, onto their cheek.

Oh, and their arms appeared to be made of spirit steel. That also drew the eye.

"I have heard much of your clan," they said, voice low and musical. "I am grateful that fate grants me a chance to fight beside you."

Septimus gave them a cautious nod.

"Suppose we should get going," he said. "I'm sure we'll all get along."

So of course, we didn't.

Oh look. It's getting longer again. UGH! *UGH* I say! Anyway. Have some insight into Maria and Letha's relationship, foreshadowing of the next bit, and a few jokes about the play I couldn't make fit anywhere else. @Alectai @Kaboomatic @Humbaba may I have a threadmark please?

I also wondered whether the Shadow might have been something from the time of the Sea Conquering Army. Either made during it, or at the tail end, or something like that. (Or maybe even older, if the Optimatoi really aren't from this world.)

What if, the Imperial Optimatoi made raised a great mirror shield, to blind heaven and shelter their fellows in its shadow? Just like the Demonic Soup Chef left behind an altar?

If Demonic Soup Chef did his thing because the Sea-Conquering Army was drawing all the heat and attention, then maybe the Optimatoi were also able to do something too. Either by being mighty and using the whole of their might as a big target in order to start casting a shadow, or maybe as part of their main strategy, or maybe something done after they started crumbling, or maybe around the time of the Blood Path's creation -- a time when there was somebody else around who the Heavens were focused on.

If the Sea-Conquering Army took hundreds of thousands of years to conquer 3 seas -- and then had their work undone in mere millennia -- then god knows how many secrets and legacies and ancient strategies and plans and perspective-shaking-revelations there might be left behind.

Hell, for all we know, there are some Optimatoi-specific Secret Realms around -- just, ones that are unreachable now and totally forgotten. (That is, the ones that weren't destroyed or reclaimed or taken over.)

Other things I'm wondering about though...

What's under the ocean surface?

And I mean, really far under the water? If you go far enough, do you find out that there's shit scarier than Turtlechildren (or the Turtle Emperor)? Things that are to Turtlechildren, as whales or sharks are to turtles?

Does shit get crazy the deeper down you get? And is there a seafloor? And what's under the seafloor? Is there a core to the planet?

And what about above the world? Is the atmosphere crazy bullshit? Is the moon?

Reason I ask is, I wonder how far the light of Heaven reaches. ... I mean, presumably everywhere in the world, but... If you expected light to be unable to reach somewhere, it'd be deep in the ocean or something, no.

Zeno Angelus & Gaius Antonius - The Earth Rumbles and Skitters, Part 1
The earth rumbles and skitters part 1

collab with @no. (Gaius/Zeno)
After weeks of travel, hindered by the sheer mass of our army, we come to the last town called Vounoplagiá. Xia is extremely excited, as shown by her skipped steppes every now and then, which she consciously stops doing the nearer we approach our destination.

Our scorpion army is no different, becoming stiller with every step towards the drill. Before ling we can see the town just over the corner and our scorpion army lies in ambush behind the nearest dune, ready to strike any would be attacker from the shadows.

The rest of our caravan with goods for trade advances forward toward the town, in hopes of trading some exotic goods, like Shen kingdom wool, and fruits of paradise in exchange for masses of spirit stones. Even from outside the city our approaching caravan can see the spirit stone piling up into a small mountain of its own. As we approach the suns glare from them sets a small hut on fire, testing the fire fighters in town and showing their apparent trained routine.

Normally no mere merchant, like my disguise Wang Ren, would dare to directly want to trade exotic goods, most of which benefit only cultivators at Foundation Establishment and above. The small number of these cultivators in the home country of Princess Xia means they have an abundance of goods to sell. Selling these goods through our wayward princess would mean more legitimacy for her future rule and more importantly for me, more wealth for our clan.

Most of the time, as a merchant in Jingshen territory, my entire caravan is checked top to bottom. They open every crate, activate various talismans, and even check for dead-spirit-curses, which could be used to "spoil" inanimate goods of their spiritual value after a time. That spoiling commonly happens after a few weeks of the good exchanging hands. The curse is commonly known and therefore easy to get rid of, but not checking for it is almost asking for a disaster.

Nothing like that happens once they confirm the authenticity of my caravan. Shen Kingdom trade is apparently really liked in this distant town. They just let us in after confirming the number of cultivators in our caravan.

I can´t deny my disappointment in this. Where is the reasonable paranoia in an important clan asset of the Jingshen and more importantly for our future negotiations, through what topic can I buy us enough time in negotiation, so the drill can be properly rigged?

The curse was supposed to allow both parties to maintain face in this scenario by claiming to work together on defeating Golden Devil shenanigans through checking for more of this curse together over multiple days. I can´t repeat how common this has been in every other town until now and at this crucial moment I had to meet the one lazy guard captain in Jingshen territory, ugh.

At least we are well received and after my obvious wish to quickly begin negotiations. Everyone knows that a true merchant knows his time worth in spirit stones and I intend to show them the best stereotype they can believe. Since I am officially a Jingshen vassal, trading under the directions of the Shen kingdom with trade goods to match my mercantile pedigree, they will believe a lot. Their response to such an opportunity is swift, as expected.

"Of course, honourable merchant, we have all the spirit stones in the world to trade. Please, the governor awaits you with anticipation."

"Lead the way then, so we may both come out of this richer." As if, we travelled off the main path wherever possible. He just senses an easy hit.

With a smile on her lips the governor's guard leads me and my bodyguard Xia to her boss's office, while my people ready our cargo. Meanwhile I start convincing her that taking our wares for the presented rates are most generous. The dust of sandstorm doesn´t show our goods in the best light after all.

______

Over the city of Vounoplagiá (or at least, that's what the Golden Devils called it), the black of night slowly gave way to the rosy red of dawn. Like clockwork, a young (or rather, young-looking) man sat up in his bed, ramrod-straight, and opened his eyes. The fatigue drained out with a few disciplined breaths, and in half a minute, awareness was fully established.

This man's name, theoretically, was Ren Yuhan. It was very crucial that he be Ren Yuhan at all hours of the day, from the moment he left his bed to the moment he returned. For long past the thousandth time, this man - who was not yet Ren Yuhan, but soon would be - internally recited his life.

"Head secretary of the treasurer. Cultivator with some talent, but not so much as to be exceptional. Slouched posture, unflappable demeanor. A dull bureaucrat, but not so dull as to invite pity, scorn or suspicion. An unambitious man, beneath notice. Planning to ascend to Foundation Establishment at the Tenth Heavenstage. Upon doing so, will be married off to an esteemed noble house, so as to increase his family's standing. Until then, I am a secretary. I am Ren Yuhan."

Said man does not exist, save for the presentation of the one who wears him as a mask. That man is one we know well, but Gaius Antonius would not speak his own name, and would not write it either, aside from at the top of the scrolls he handed off to the carrier birds every evening.

Reaching into a bag at the side of his bed, the double-man retrieved a featureless white pill, unidentifiable by sight, and swallowed it with a practiced ease. A dull ache ran down Gaius' skull from top to bottom, as his face, which had begun to return to its natural shape as he slept, once more perfectly assumed the face of Ren Yuhan. His hair, which had begun to curl and lighten, darkened to a perfect, straight black. Finally, the melanin once more faded from Gaius' skin, and he became his disguise in body and mind.

Ren Yuhan emerged from his bedroom, taking a brief trip to the washroom to prepare himself for the coming day. After completing his morning grooming with well-practiced efficiency, the secretary returned to his bedroom and put on one of dozens of drab but well-made robes. His look was completed by a small hat that served to make him look a bit more servile and disarm other further. Strolling down a short hallway into his well-furnished living room, Ren Yuhan wondered if he was perhaps forgetting something.

"...right, food." He nodded to himself, turning from the door and opening a cabinet to retrieve a small wicker box of dumplings, leftover's from yesterday's dinner. He consumed them quickly and efficiently, but carefully, not letting a single fleck of oil or dough touch his robes.

As the secretary of treasurer Dai Wei, he did not hold authority himself but saw the same things as those who did. Access and invisibility, the two best tools of a spy. Every single day, countless documents passed under his watchful and deceitful gaze. Tax documents, imports, exports, salvage - everything of consequence that entered or left Vounoplagiá was known to Ren Yuhan, whose job was to review and organize these documents, send anything Dai Wei wanted his way, and inscribe any copies that were needed.

Nobody who saw a secretary making a copy of a document thought anything of it - the sane line of thinking was always 'That is a secretary performing his duty. Someone told him to make additional copies.' Thus, no one ever dug deep enough to realize that the traitorous Ren Yuhan was consolidating Vounoplagiá's economic data, day after day, and taking the pilfered information home.

Once a week (or rather, once every 5-9 days) on the evenings, a Cloudhawk decloaked and landed on his windowsill, at which point he would give it a scroll inscribed with all of the relevant information. Through a system he did not possess the full knowledge of, that information would reach a Golden Devil outpost within three days and the Dawn Fortress within a week. On its own, this leaked information was not only boring, but useless. But when combined with the efforts of a dozen other spies in a dozen other Jingshen cities all doing the same things, patterns began to emerge. Tracking the entire economy of a sprawling Great Power was impossible, but tracking trends in this fashion allowed the Jingshen's actions to be more accurately predicted ahead of time.

Ren Yuhan left his house and strolled down streets of smooth grey bricks on his way to work The Ministry of Commerce was fairly close to his home, just a twenty-minute walk if he took his time, and a five minute one if he did not. Neighbors greeted him, asked about this and that, and he replied in kind, like an automaton. He played the show of being Ren Yuhan flawlessly for each and every one of these people, as he had for the past three years.

It was so dreadfully dull. Effective, perhaps, but not once in his life had Gaius truly understood the unfathomable immensity of the world before this, when he took on a mission to act as a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of an effort to outmanoeuvre a rival perhaps 5% more often. In that name of that cause, he became another man, lived another life. It made The Seeker understand the nature of duty in a profound way that he never had before. That didn't mean it wasn't a fucking bore.

Entering the sprawling government building with little fanfare, the secretary traced a well-remembered path to his little out of the way room. It was mostly unfurnished, with a desk, a mat for kneeling on and a few paintings to liven up the decor. Already, the documents had begun to pile up on his desk and needed to be attended to. Next to the mat was a simple but robust one-way broadcasting array, which would transmit orders from the treasurer or other superiors. Ren Yuhan slid into place like a key into a lock and began his daily task.

One might ask how Gaius of all people - the extremely diligent cultivator, he of the rigid block-schedule, the regimented inventory and the meticulous notebook, could even process boredom. The reason was simple: this wasn't his life. It was someone else's; he was pretending to follow a different path, and while that did not outright clash with his Dao, the hint of disloyalty produced an inevitable friction. Being Ren Yuhan ground against the inside of Gaius' skull, ever so slowly, like being gently caressed by sandpaper. This discontentment was expressed mostly as boredom, simply because there was no other strong emotion he could feel under these circumstances, so empty of passion was his mission.

So, when a voice chimed in through the array to explain that Secretary Ren Yuhan was being summoned to inscribe notes for a major trade negotiation between Vounoplagiá's governor and a bigshot travelling merchant, he was delighted. Even if it was just yet more economics, any change in his slow descent into madness was welcome.

With a bit more pep in his step, the beuraucrat quickly zipped over to the governor's estate nearby, going as fast as one could without breaking a businesslike gait. The distant sounds of heated debate reached Ren Yuhan's keen ears the moment the guards opened the mansion's thick, decorated double doors for him, and he picked up the pace further.

On the way, a short old man with a luxurious beard and thick round-lensed glasses crossed the secretary's path from the other direction, causing him to snap to attention and bow. This was the treasurer, Dai Wei.

"You made it quickly; that's good. Kong Feng's a clever fellow; for him to need my help, this merchant must be a master dealmaker." The official mused, stroking his beard thoughtfully. "Best not to keep them waiting any longer, then."

With that, the pair made their way to the governor's office together, with the assistant opening doors for his superior, who walked at all times with both hands folded behind his back. After finally emerging at the end of the labyrinthine mansion, the secretary opened one final door, revealing a huge and luxurious office, filled with all manner of exotic plants, beautiful artwork and incredibly well-made wooden furniture.

Three people stood within. First among them was the governor, Kong Feng. A somewhat portly man with a large frame and rugged features, he had distinguished himself as an officer with two centuries of military service before being given this city as a reward. Before him stood a small, well-groomed man in somewhat loud orange robes, and a beautiful, demure woman in a fine purple and grey dress behind him. Judging from the tenseness in their shoulders, some spirit debate had already taken place before their arrival.

"Governor. My apologies for making you wait." The treasurer greeted with a bow, which Ren Yuhan mimicked in turn, but deeper. He quickly slid into place next to the governor and one step behind, with his assistant standing on the opposite side, prepared to take notes.

Immediately, negotiations continued, numbers flying back and forth from three mouths at a breakneck pace. Ren Yuhan's charcoal became a blur as he committed the conversation to shorthand with machine-like precision. The woman only spoke up occasionally, seemingly not a merchant or economist herself.

As he went, the assistant's mind began to wander; a hazardous thing in such important meetings, but he needed to cling to sanity somehow. There was something about that merchant which he couldn't place, something about his accent perhaps? At first glance he seemed to speak in a typical Jingshen accent, but there was a lilting quality to his vowels underneath it. And the way that man wore his hair... it was amateurish, locks falling over his eyes repeatedly rather than remaining tucked away. Was he used to keeping it short? That was rather odd for a Jingshen merchant to do.

...oh.

Oh dear, that was another Golden Devil. Now that made things a lot more complicated. Perhaps Gaius shouldn't have been so desperate for something interesting.

We are quickly lead inside a spacious and ostentatious office with far too many jade green carpets hanging from the walls. I know that these carpets are luxuries only the richest can afford to get from the Ma clan in the plains, but really, 50 of them in varying sizes. Isn´t that a bit too much?

Thankfully, my actions don´t betray my thoughts and the governor arrives quickly from a backdoor in the room, with the guard quickly approaching him. Xia stands guard behind me, while the guard quickly reports the wares on offer and my given rates. After some back and forth, to confirm my rates the governor calls for his treasurer. Not long afterwards a tall man, garbed in a well-worn blue robe with a small flat hat, enters the room. If it wasn´t for this man's robes, I would have trouble noticing him in a crowd, come to think of it.

The governor, content to start with some inane power play I swear every Jingshen learns to do in their live, starts the negotiations by ignoring me. The treasurer quickly picks up the conversation and leads us to his desk with the only guest chair nearby. That can´t be a coincidence.

Judging by the small mountain of papers on his desk in comparison to the neat stacks of his superior, the workload is clearly divided, showing me who knows the actual income, but sadly doesn´t possess the authority.

"So, what brings you here, merchant Ren?"

"The spirit stones, of course. Few places can match the wealth Jingshen gains with the drill after all." Let´s see if he bites.

"True, the drilled wealth is unmatched in volume, compared to other sources. I certainly wouldn´t be here without a job." His tone is telling me a longing for something else, but what?

"Ha ha! Absolutely true my friend. This truly is a golden opportunity for all of us, isn´t it?"

"Very true, merchant Ren and the wealth flows steadily, yet!" So, a Golden Devil in disguise then? Interesting. No Jingshen would have that glint of happiness inside their yes, when hearing about gold after all. They are all about the spirit stones.

"To commemorate this unprecedented deal, I have brought with me a princely sum of the finest wool this side of the desert!" Xia, the helpful soul that she is, hands a sheaf of paper to the treasurer, with the seal of Shen to ram in just how royally important this deal is.

Seemingly unimpressed he sets the paper aside. "Since this Shen east-side wool isn´t top quality wool for carpet linings like it´s contemporary we are prepared to buy it in bulk for a quarter Spirit stone per ton."

Trying to squeeze an easy profit out of it to impress your target? Not with me! "Don´t sell us both short. The seal shows our quality. Four Spirit stones per ton of wool!" The chair of the governor creaks.

"If I may, honoured guest. I have way to make us all richer without needless haggling."

"What could possibly arouse you from your work, noticing our presence as guests?" The governor, not ignoring his lack of face towards us, continues with an inclination of his head; showing the right amount of deference his standing allows.

"Our city has always been hounded by bandits of various stripes over the centuries. This Falling Vulture gang is different and sacks our city whenever they please, since their endless sandstone-barrage array means meaningful reinforcements in necessary numbers become casualties quite easily. This means we have to avoid combat with them, when possible. We meet our quotas regardless and the clan cares not from where the Stone flows."

"Then you want to hire my and my guard to take care of them?"

"Yes, you suppose correctly honourable merchant!" What a quick turn. "This governor would pay any price to see them gone from our fair city!" He caved in far too quickly. So, the bandits are a trap then, but nothing we can´t handle.

"I want the raw spirit stones for half of the refined market value. Surely their extermination is worth you that much." And a smug smile to crown such an arrogant statement. The governor shows me only a tense smile.

"W-what. Please, be reasonable. We would be begging for scraps by the end of the month should we agree to that!"

"How about we keep it simple, and you will always have favourable rates for amenities with us instead? The amenities aren´t cheap as we all know; you may even cut out that business expense further by filing it with the association under special taxes with such a small amount!" His rotten cheer is almost palpable.

Before I can refute such an idiotic assertion a sudden step behind me brings us out of our reverie; a shocked expression appearing on the governor's face within the same breath. "You dare snub the eighth princess of the Shen Kingdom with such a paltry offer?" The ring under her gloves all the confirmation anyone would need to confirm the truth.

"We would not dare!" I didn´t expect this old man to bow that low, but our plan is all the better for it.

The wares of your splendid self, of course, are worth far more than we would have offered other merchants, please forgive this lowly bureaucrat for his lacking sight!"

With grace, this old man before us would need to scour heaven and all the turtles, to match it, she acts. "Ren´er was quite forward with taking half of your income of the month. What would you say would be amenable to this situation?"

Not taking the price we wanted in the first place now, would make us lose face and I don´t want to give this idiot more than necessary. "My lady, a fourth of the refined stones price would suffice to present a sum worthy of a princess to your esteemed father."

"And the Falling Vulture gang, my lady?" His momentum gaining speed, as we head back to familiar territory.

"Consider them a gift for future relations between us."

"Words cannot capture my gratefulness for the blessing your grace has bestowed upon our fair city today."

"I am sure that your hospitality could give it a try, while we wait for the good news." The portly mans eyes glint with greed at Xia's statement.

"Haha, we sure can. Treasurer, ready yourself for the journey while we entertain our new guest!" The treasurer and I leave the hall shortly thereafter.

[X] No. Stay the course you have charted so far. You will not throw your plans away on the word of a Blood Path criminal.
@occipitallobe why is the threadmark title The Lord and the Elder this time instead of The Elder and the Lord like the previous two times? Is it intentional, or a mistake? Thanks.
