Looks like in this timeline, she met and built a rapport with a pirate and brought him on board to deal with the trade federation capital ships? Wonder how this will change things.
Nym is a bit more complicated then that. he actually did fight the blockade in canon but it was limited in effect because he hit too early. however he did raid and destoy a critical facility the TF was using to supply its forces on Naboo so after the war he was pardoned of his crimes.

Later on he fought along side the Jedi order in the lead up to the Clone wars, destoying TF military bases, manufacturing centers and helping halt the production of the Chemcial weapon trihexalon or "Dragon's breath". He fought in the battle of Genosis and would go on to fight the empire.

"They are interested." Your father looked extremely pleased when he came back from the surface. He had visited some friends, among them one or two higher officials of the Temaris Defense Fleet. Now he looked like a bounty hunter who just captured a high-value target alive and was expecting a great payout. Father even rubbed his hands and was chuckling like some villain right out of a holo drama. "Very interested indeed. Your instincts were right, son. They shat themselves when they thought about losing that new big, expensive Dreadnought of theirs to some small pirate gang with fighters or light units. The news from Naboo seems to have hugely impacted them. And not only them."

"Oh?" You leant back in the chair. That was good news but apparently father had even more. He didn't continue straight away, instead, he filled two glasses with the expensive Corellian whisky and offered one to you. Then he sat down himself, looking smug, and took a sip.

"Oh yes. It isn't official, but apparently the PDFs of the sector plan to work closer together in the light of what happened over Naboo. All of this is still secret and the idea is that it stays that way, until some corporation or big-time pirate tries something. Then they will notice that there are agreements in place, forcing the rest of the sector PDFs to help the victim out with at least one-fourth of their assets. And not one of these PDFs wish to send their expensive new ships. So…"

"So they need light units that can deliver a punch. Not alone, but in larger numbers, it would be enough."

"Exactly! But that isn't all, apparently, the officers are conspiring with each other already. In around a year, the procurement will happen. Nothing official at the moment, but it will most likely happen then. And the more local the production is, the better. Especially if the same company could provide repair facilities. To make it short, if we can deliver something that fits their needs, we're in a perfect position. And the best part, it would get us enough air that we won't drown in debts anymore, maybe we could even expand the yard!"

"A year isn't much time to develop a whole ship, even less for a warship. And we don't have any specifications on what they want. As far as I know, they will differ massively from planet to planet. We can't just come up with one ship and push it down their throats, they will all have special wishes," you cautioned.

Your father listened quietly and nodded at the end. He then took out a small datapad and held it out to you. "I know, but I thought about this. I know nothing about how to develop plans for a ship, that's your field of expertise son, and I won't get in your way. But, what if we begin with the groundwork? All these ships will need a frame, engines, and cockpit or bridge. Standardization among these parts will help any of the PDFs and I can sell it to them as an advantage. At the same time, your team only needs to add weapons and whatever else they wish. A solid groundwork and then modular design."

You took the datapad and looked through his numbers and suggestions. It didn't sound that wrong to you, even if it was a bit optimistic at some points. You hadn't even thought about a ground model that could then be modularly outfitted with whatever the customer wished. But your father, always the greedy merchant he was at heart, had thought about it. Mostly because the ground model, meaning the frame with engines and cockpit/bridge, could be produced in mass. Outfitting the ship with weapons and anything else could be done customer-based. He even suggested developing some standard models with whatever you thought would sell best.

[ ] "Okay dad, my team and I will start with the groundwork. Nothing more until we have an official procurement going on. It doesn't make sense otherwise, the military market is cornered by the big banthas."
[ ] "At the moment, I wouldn't do anything about it, dad. It sounds good, too good to be honest. When we finish the current project we can think about it, maybe we have more than just some rumors then."

You left the projection of the new iteration of the cockpit your department was developing. This time, not only Shen but the rest of the team were waiting. They all looked as disgruntled as you did, no one wanted to redo the cockpit. But it was necessary, you now knew for certain, as the new cockpit was much better and more practical, even if it cost much more than originally planned to build this one.

"It's good," you told the waiting team of disgruntled ship designers. "Enough room, the layout is clear. It is the better design even if the cost goes up, the flaws that made the last design bad have been completely removed."

There wasn't any cheering, but at least the team didn't look too disgruntled after you said that. But still, you felt the need to assure them a bit more. "Our first cockpit wasn't bad, people. We just tried to fit too much in too small a cockpit, we learned from this and the next time we will do better. Ambitions aren't bad, you know, and we almost did it. So next time we sure are going to do it."

You got nods of agreement and even a short-lived cheer. It seemed they would get over their disappointment in time. "Good, then back to work! We still aren't finished with the design."

You returned to your office as they went to their workstations. You had just taken a seat and opened the first file to work on when you heard someone get closer. When you looked up, you saw Shen coming towards you with a look of determination on his face. Behind him, you saw Pinagg following the Duros with a much more relaxed pace. For some time now, you've noticed that Pinagg was the spokesperson for the conservative designers and Shen the one for the more radical minded. Yet both were professional enough to accept if they were wrong. This had greatly impacted both "camps" in your team and made sure that they didn't hinder each other. A productive rivalry. The downside was, of course, that you often had to play the judge in their disputes and the way Shen stormed towards you showed that it was that time of day again.

As he got closer, you mused on whether you should maybe promote him. He was an intern, but from the first day, he had shown the most promise from all designers and had been willing to put himself behind the team effort. Without him, there would be more slackers and he also spent the most overtime hours in the department and brought in results that were worth it. The question was to what position? You could promote him to be a senior developer like Pinagg and you. But that would maybe ruffle some feathers among the rest of the team. Or you could promote him to the position of a junior developer. That would be most agreeable with the rest of the department, but it wasn't coming close to what Shen deserved.

"Boss!"

"Yes, Shen?"

"Please tell me you aren't truly considering this for the weapons! It's just a disgrace and far enough removed from reality that only a Jedi could make you believe it's good!" The Duros angrily waved his pad around to make his point more clear. But you were at a loss and not sure what exactly he wanted from you.

>>He means the armament.<< Thankful for the explanation, you nodded towards Pinagg who followed Shen into your office. With the dignity of a noble who has learned how to behave (and maybe to make a point), he bowed lightly and took a seat. >>My young friend here seems a bit upset over the Republican laws regarding ship armament. I was planning to later present you with a number of suitable weapons that could be put onto the ship for defense purposes and are allowed under the law. Shen thinks we should arm the freighter more than needed. I think we should add just enough weaponry to satisfy the requirements.<<

"You want to put just a single cannon on the ship! In a fixed position, no less!"

Pinagg gave Shen a patronizing look. >>Yes, because it is all that is required. The ship needs a weapon to blast its way to freedom so it can make a jump and escape. More isn't required. And Far & Wide Trading mostly operates in the Mid Rim, there are some pirates but they aren't that common. Besides that, anything more advanced and we would need to pay the Republic extra taxes for each ship built. Granted, we can put that tax fully on the buyer, but it would drive up the cost of the ship. A single cannon in a fixed position is enough.<<

"Well, for how long will it stay safe in the Mid Rim? And I think we wish to sell this ship to more folk than just the guys at Far & Wide Trading. These people will take their ships to other places than the Mid Rim, for sure. And they will need more than just a single gun. It could even be the reason why they would or wouldn't buy one of our ships. We need a stronger armament, not just a small fun-gun. I don't say make a warship out of our freighter, but at least two more guns in turrets. That wouldn't even force us to pay that much of extra tax. Here, I've some numbers right here boss. Take a look."

You took the offered pad out of his hand and put it down on your desk before looking to Pinagg. "I assume the file you sent me and I just started to read were your suggestions on the matter?"

>>Yes.<<

"Good, I'll take a look at both and then decide."

This seems to be a choice of jumping in on the ground floor with a possibility inferior design, or wait and hope we get something good enough when we get around to it, Risk vs reward. Am I right with my guess?

This has a nice +3 advanatge vs 1 flaw to give us room to make improvements elsewhere oh and it does not use compartment space so more room for freight space

It's also a turret mount, so a quad laser can be installed if the buyer wants to modify it.

It's +1 cost for +2 advantages compared to the X9. We're already overbudget, I don't want to go any higher than absolutely necessary.

Can we promote Shen later? Cause if we can Junior developer is better. As for guns the Double Death is the best price and advantage wise. We can't afford to go beyond a single weapon system so a single double laser cannon is enough for defense and cheapness. Laying the ground work for a basic light ship is smart it gives us an edge and lets us have something ready for deployment in a short amount of time when the request comes down. Being ready is very important INCOM knew that and cornered the market in the GAR starfighter corp instead of HKD with their R-41 starchasers.

Well, what is the baseline price for a freighter, @Jax?
The QM already answered that go through the options and choose the normal options that is the medium and general cost for a light freighter.

X9 also takes up compartment space which competes with freight space (special compartment phase is where we use compartment space to add freight components) and means that we can potentially try and use the advantages we picked up to drop cost or boost stats elsewhere

Are we? I don't recall a budget even being listed at any point, just that the client wants this ship to be affordable to buy in bulk. We've got no idea what, say, a YT-series goes for in the cost stat.

We're 1 under on frame, but 3 over on cockpit. We're bog standard for engines. Just take the "normal" option for outsourced components.

On the other hand, the compartment space argument is entirely reasonable, I think I was looking at the Size accidentally. I still think cheaper is better (with a turret mount though, fixed mount weapons are useless against small ships that pirates would likely use) but it's pretty close.

It seems once again SV is not giving me a message this quest updated, wonder what is up with that?
