@Oshha, does our goddess only protect certain individuals, such as mystic heroes, from magical attack, like we just saw, or the People in general?

Reign of Ymarn III
[X] Offensively. The People seek out ways to find the Sea Hunters and strike back at them.

As news of what happened at Sunrise Bay to Greenbay and Rockbay, the reaction was one of horror and shock.

How could this have happened? What did the People do to provoke the Sea Hunters? Why would the Sea Hunters the way that they did? What would happen to those taken by the Sea Hunters?

The attack on Sunrise was easily the greatest disaster in the history of the People. Never before had so many of the People had died at once. Before it was always a handful here and there, sad and regrettable, but that was life. People died and not always because of old age.

But now? Now, over two hundred of the People were dead or missing and the People had someone to blame. As this realisation spread, the reaction of the People became one of fury and rage. This disaster was wilfully caused by those that knew what they were doing. This was no accident, to be blamed on bad luck or nature, but a deliberate act of malice and evil.

The collective hatred felt by the People outstripped anything recorded in the history of the People as even the Foresters had yet to inspire this level of rage.

As far as the People were concerned, it wasn't a matter of whether to get their own back from the Sea Hunters, but how.

Value Gained!
Loyal Neighbours

The People do not abandon their own. They stand by their neighbours and community through thick and thin and do not yield when it comes to protecting their fellows.
Pros: Increased Unity during times of crisis,
Cons: Legitimacy loss when abandoning members of the People to harm and danger,

The People were split into two camps on how to deal on how to deal with the Sea Hunters. The smaller group sought to rely upon the goddess to show the way. They pointed to how Arthryn had protected Ymarn and scared off the Sea Hunters when they attacked Sunrise Bay. The would point out how the People didn't know where the Sea Hunters had come from and didn't have the means to traverse the sea like their foes had.

The rest of the People felt it was up to the People to deal with this matter and rather than hope for the goddess to bring about the downfall of the Sea Hunters, the People should take action themselves.

The problem of how to do so remained however. The People didn't know where the Sea Hunters had come from and had returned nor did they the ability to travel the sea like the Sea Hunters had.

Ironically, the solution came from the Sea Hunters as a few of the People had witnessed the arrival of the Sea Hunters in Sunrise Bay and lived to tell the tale. They spoke of the Sea Hunters arriving in logs, using oars to paddle themselves through the waves and the logs were able to fit a person inside somehow.

It was from those tales that the People figured out the method employed by the Sea Hunters to travel across the seas. By finding big enough logs and carving them out, a person could fit inside with some supplies and use an oar to move and steer themselves. Between these canoes and rafts, the People will be able to seek out the Sea Hunters and hopefully strike back at them.

Another useful invention is the shield. The main section is made from wood or wicker and used to block spears and arrows while a handle is attached for the wielder to hold it by. While it isn't useful in hunts against animals, a fight against other people can make all the difference between life and death when it blocks an arrow or spear.

With canoes and rafts, the fishers-turned-explorers of the People begin their journeys into the sea. Having the goal of finding the Sea Hunters, the People search for several winters. Some of those sent out return while others don't, vanishing into sea to never be heard from again.

None are able to find the Sea Hunters and return to the People with that knowledge.

The Sea Hunters are able to find the People however. Over the seasons, the Sea Hunters would return to attack the People. Most of them are raids on Sunrise Bay, but a couple of times the Sea Hunters are spotted in the sea from Rockbay and their leader even leads an attack on Greenbay itself.

The attack on Greenbay was largest of the Sea Hunter attacks and even then, it never became the disaster that Sunrise Bay was on that fateful night. The People knew what was coming when the Sea Hunters got spotted and they were prepared for the attack by the Sea Hunters reached land. The fighting was brutal and bloody and more People died that day than Sea Hunters did, but there were just too many People in Greenbay for the Sea Hunters to win.

The Sea Hunters left dozens dead or injured, but never truly left the shores that they landed on. Retreating back to the sea, the Sea Hunters would never be seen never Greenbay or Rockbay after that.

While numerous, the attacks on Sunrise Bay were small and never reached the size of that first attack on Sunrise Bay or the one at Greenbay. A few got killed or injured here and there, but all of the attacks got repulsed in the end.

It pained her to do so, but Ymarn never got worried by the raids on the People. She found it sad and infuriating when the People were murdered by the Sea Hunters, but the calculating part of her could see the numbers clear as day and they were in the favour the People.

The People were simply too large for the Sea Hunters to beat. Greenbay and Rockbay were too populous for the Sea Hunters to successfully raid and Sunrise Bay would join them in time. The initial advantages of surprise and canoes had been lost by the Sea Hunters and in time, the People would come to match them. Their mighty leader would die in time as all people do while the Blessing of the Goddess gives the People a permanent advantage that they will not lose and their does will not gain.

The Sea Hunters simply do not have the numbers to pose a true threat to the People. They are nothing more than an annoyance. A deadly annoyance yes, but nonetheless just annoyance.

The only problem is that the People are still dying and they have yet to reclaim those taken during the first raid.

Fortunately, not all is lost as while the People have been failing, the goddess has not abandoned them or forsaken those taken. Instead, she has revealed the location of the Sea Hunters to Ymarn, a village in the mountains closest to Sunrise Bay.

As she grows old and her body weakens even with Arthryn's blessing, Ymarn needs to decide what path the People will take and how they will continue the fight with the Sea Hunters.

What do the People approach the fight with the Sea Hunters?
[] Continue the offensive. While the People have failed, those that would taken still need to be saved and the goddess has provided the location of the Sea Hunters, something that the People have failed to find out on their own.
[] Turn to the goddess. The People have failed to save those taken and while the Sea Hunter attacks are fended off, the People are still dying and are no closer to striking back at the Sea Hunters. The goddess has been succeeding where the People have been failing so perhaps it is time to seek guidance from Arthryn.
[] Prepare the defence. The People are no closer to saving those taken and the Sea Hunters are not relenting in their attacks and the People continue to die at the hands of the Sea Hunters. It is time to focus on protecting those that remain. (-1 Legitimacy)

Your rolls this turn just sucked and while the Sea Hunters had decent rolls and a Hero. That only thing that went in your favour this turn was Arthryn kicking more divine butt.

On the bright side, you got a new value that goes nicely with Communal Mandate, but sort of limits your ability to back down from some fights. Like this one.

Fighting a Martial Hero in a martial culture civ on their home turf sounds like a terrible idea, even with numbers advantage.
Arthryn, on the other hand, has been kicking ass this entire war. She seems like our best bet to win this, at least until the martial hero dies of old age.

Payback time. Also lets not puss out just cause we got some bad rolls on finding them and go crying to momma Arthryn. I would like our people to follow through on what they want instead of pleading with their god whenever a challenge appears.

This honestly seems like the better idea, but I'm concerned about the effect that would have long-term on our civilization. No, we need to handle this ourselves.

No no, I mean, Yeah we are gonna settle sunrise bay.
But the Primary reason of searching the mountains is to make sure there is no threat. For example We obviously want to avoid settling next to the forester's forest, but what if it turns out there is a hostile presence in the mountains? We would be at threat from both sides. This time with us not knowing anything about that which leis in the mountains. If we explore the mountains we can know what exactly it is that flanks our nations west and will allows us to ensure our safety.

Arthyn forbid we have enemies on multiple fronts.

We have a mystic hero, not a martial hero, best have the goddess give us the advantage in dealing with the enemy over anything else. Its not about being to independent, its about making use of what we have. it'd be arbitrary to fight an enemy this adept in their home field without using our strengths

Callback to when I suggested we check the mountains and explore them because something dangerous might be there.

I CALLED IT.

They have a martial hero and we have a mystic hero. We need to play to our strengths. Goddess is part of the people got to keep that in mind here.

Edit: Changed my mind.

Our hero is mystic/admin not mystic/martial like their hero.
Our main advantages are our goddess' might and sheer numbers.

In short- let's focus on our strenghts.

All of you show weakness in the name of Arthryn; Who is Strong! She has shown us our charge, and we shall claim our people and our vengeance. Not BY her or ours, but FOR her and ours. As she would have done.
