So, counting up the votes we're actually in a tie between

[X] I dunno. Boys are all the same, right?

and

[X] Uh, totally. That one guy... he's so cute... Yeah.

So I'll be doing a 50:50 dice roll to determine the winner at this point. On a d6 1-3 will be option 1 and 4-6 will be option 2.
Artificial Girl threw 1 6-faced dice. Reason: Option 1 vs Option 2 Total: 6
6 6

8. That guy. The one with the... hair. And the face.
The dice have determined a winner!

[X] Uh, totally. That one guy... he's so cute... Yeah.

Oh. Crap. You need to answer and before you really have time to think about it you blurt something out around a mouthful of fish.

"Uh! Yeah, actually. There's this one guy. He's--he's cute. And cool." Ugh, that sounded awful. No way are either of them going to believe you. Mari beams though.

"Wait, really?" She pipes up, voice tinged with excitement. "You finally have a boy you want to ask out? Oh my God! Who? Are you gonna confess soon? C'mon, tell me all the details!" Ryou leans back on the bench with his usual quiet smile, content to let the two of you talk it out. Rather, content to let Mari try to needle the deets about your supposed crush out of you.

This was supposed to give you some breathing room. Instead all it's done is put you in an even deeper hole that you somehow need to get yourself out of. The best way to do that is clearly to keep digging, right? You lean over, careful not to fall from the tree, and scowl down at Mari.

"Th-that--! That's private. I can't just go tell you who I like! And I'm not going to be confessing any time soon. It's only the first day of school! How can you ask that?!" Your counterattack is sadly not as effective as you might have hoped and Mari's not one to falter in the face of your protests, not when she finally thinks she has something new to try and pry out of you. She just grins in all too catlike a manner (she must have learned it from you) and gives Ryou a gentle elbow.

"It has to be someone, right? You can't just say that you finally have a boy you like and then not tell me who it is, Hanako!" Mari is insistent and she's not likely to give up until you give her something to work with or think over. You fidget on your branch and try to focus on your food, but you don't really feel all that hungry for some reason. Who are you supposed to have a crush on? This is... awkward. Really awkward. But you can't go back on it now. Thinking over the day you try to pull a face out. Someone... safe.

"Uh... " You hesitate again. Ryou chuckles.

"You'd better just say or Mari's never going to let you hear the end of it," he says.

"I'll never hear the end of it anyway," you say with a sour flick of your ears.

"But. It's... Jesse if you have to know," you finally say with a sullen jerk of your shoulders. He's the first boy you think of that you know and maybe you can rely on them to keep your "crush" secret from him. At least for now. The squeal that Mari lets out is piercing and you feel certain that people could hear it halfway across the city.

"Really? Him? I didn't figure you for being into younger guys, Hana-chan! But that's totally and completely adorable. You have to confess to him. You'd make such a cute couple!" Your tail bottlebrushes, fluffing up as you hear her say that. Confess? No way can you confess! That's way too much--and you don't even actually think of him that way!

"No. No way. I can't confess. That's just impossible!"

"Why? It's not like you don't know him or something," Ryou points out, helpful as always. Mari nods in agreement.

"Yeah, you totally could. You should at least think about it. You two would make such a sweet couple, too," Mari adds. Neither sentiment makes the prospect feel any more palatable to you, but on the other hand... maybe you should try it, just to make sure that you really don't feel that way. There wouldn't be any harm in it, right? You sigh and close up your lunch box before you start lowering yourself to the ground again.

"...I'll think about it," you finally admit. In part you just want the to stop insisting that you have to do this. "I'm just gonna head back to the classroom." Without waiting for any other questions you hurry off towards class, your appetite completely done in. The rest of the school day you feel fidgety and pent-up, barely able to focus on any of your work as you turn the unhappy outcomes of this unfortunate situation over in your head. Best case scenario, you confess and he turns you down. Otherwise you might be in some sort of tangled up relationship that doesn't seem terribly conducive to either your happiness or Jesse's.

On autopilot through the rest of the day, you don't really seem to come back to yourself until you're sitting the cozy club room with Erika at the end of the day. It's a nice space, though you're not quite sure what it was before it was a club room. Maybe a staff room or something? There's a whiteboard at one of the room and there's a round table you can all use for your meetings. Sometime in the days of yore, a previous club managed to get a couch in here too, which along with the digital projector makes watching movies kind of a breeze. She's saying something--

"Senpai? Hanako-senpai? Are you okay? You seem kind of distracted."

Now what?

[ ] Brush her off. Better to focus on the club right now.
[ ] Confide in Erika, but only tell her about as much as you've told Mari.
[ ] Confide in Erika. You can probably trust her to keep things quiet even if she knows you don't really have feelings for Jesse.
[ ] Say that you're not feeling well and use it as an excuse to go to the infirmary so you can have some time to yourself.

So I say we need to be a good senpai but how GOOD of a Senpai? Honestly, I'm inclined to go all in here. She isn't going to tell Mari and we can't keep up this charade with everyone or else it's going to crumble around us. She seems to respect us enough that I doubt she'll go blabbing our secrets.

This is going to be way worse if we can't confide in anyone, so why not start with her?

Not really interested in lying to everyone around us. We need at least one solid confidante.

Makes sense.

I don't think we're bold enough to tell someone about this? If we couldn't with Mari, who's been our best friend forever...

She's also the one who's been pushing Hanako on it, so much so that she made something up hoping that it would get her to stop. Hanako may have more trouble specifically telling Mari. It doesn't hurt to talk to a different friend when she can't talk to one.

That said, I am tempted to go with brushing her off and focusing on the club, for two reasons. First, we really should deal with the club at some point. Second, there's something to be said about building the largest and shakiest house of cards possible before watching it implode and "denial, denial, denial" seems like about the right option, both in character and for maximum explosiveness.
