Burden of the Emerald Empire (A Legend of the Five Rings Tale)

[X] Decline (+10 Scorpion)
[X] Bayushi Paneki (+5 to Scorpion Lock 40, -5 Crab, Phoenix)
[X] Kyuden Asako (+5 Phoenix)

I did not intend to communicate Kazuki as being strategically ungifted, a preference for blitzkrieg isn't a bad thing. He's just not as strong at defending as Ginchiyo is.

A good offense at the expense of defense is useful when the borders are secure, Rokugan is the undisputed Big Boy in the neighborhood, and if Hisao wants to pursue a more expansionist agenda.

It is surprisingly hard to find a Hida that is a bushi with enough clothes on
I found one or two decent ones with an image search off of "Hida O-Ushi", but yeah. Surprisingly thin on the ground.

Admittedly, the male Hida bushi *also* have a habit of showing off their physiques, so... it's a bit more balanced?

It is, but its also very much a 'Why can't you people wear clothes?!' when image searching for buff samurai or female samurai...or buff female samurai.

Considering how the Crab predominantly fights Shadowland and how unnaturally corrupting and transmissible anything related to Taint is...

They really should logically have an obsessive attitude to cover up as much as humanly possible. Not the other way around.

They are also only human and live in the hottest and most humid part of the empire. Wearing as little as possible could be their way to keep comfortable, considering Rokugan doesn't have air conditioning.

...and in the RPG, they do. Hida Bushi school is all about wearing heavy armor all the time. Kaiu Artisan school is all about making really good really heavy armor for the Hida Bushi to wear. In the art? Not so much.

Between some basic comfort and surviving without becoming horrible literally rotting cancer zombies...the choice isn't so easy.

Also I knew the Crab Lands were hot but they are humid as well? Being Crab really is suffering.

It's not just about armor actually. I'm referring more to just plain regular clothing. I mean the more skin you have exposed the more area you have for all that Tainted dust and mud that might turn you into horrible literally rotting cancer zombies...of Evil.

Plus heavy armor chafes a lot.

For you, your mother once told you. Your father Toturi III known as the Anvil to some, had fought against the darkness and ruled an Empire all for you. Or so she said, but then, you weren't sure of that yourself. After all the number of times that you spoke to him could be counted on one hand. After what happened to the Hantei, well, there were very few limits that the Toturi had when it came to preserving their family. The Empire had rejoiced at your birth, but that only lasted until you could be weaned, then you disappeared. On the whole complaining about the small monastery in the mountains your father had found seemed ungrateful. Even if you only saw your parents rarely, they had given you two siblings soon enough so it wasn't that lonely.
What happened to the second sibling? I only remember Toturi Daio.

Lost to the mists of time. More accurately its a remnant from an earlier draft of the Toturi family that I didn't catch on my re-edits. I worked on that opening post for half a year before I felt like I had the mechanics down enough to start the quest proper. Mea culpa

Year 7: The High House of Light I
Year 7, Month of the Rat, Third Day (Winter)

Your first real thought about the High House of Light, once Kyuden Togashi, was not for its esoteric paths, or its cunning construction on the top of the world. No, your first thought was that it was bloody cold up here. Even now there's snow up to your waist, and you're no Hida but you ain't small either.

However, you are the emperor, so unlike everyone else, you can't break decorum to rub your hands together to try and regain some warmth. Instead suffering in splendid silence. Although, to be fair, so were the Crane and Crab. The Mantis in fact seemed to have lost all of their trademark manic energy. So it is not like you are alone. On the other hand...

In front of you, a bare chested Togashi swings his legs around in a butterfly kick, such a maneuver is in general...foolish. It destroys your footing, and if you guess your opponent wrong even a little, you're wide open to a counter attack.

So of course the shirtless tattooed man doubles down on it, slamming his hands on the ground and twisting himself around like a top, a barrage of kicks raining down on the hapless Unicorn who has drawn him as an opponent.

A kick breaks through the Unicorn's guard and sends him flying out of the ring. The Togashi stands up, seeming unphased by the...1440 degree spin he just put himself through.

The referee calls. "Togashi Li, advances to the semi finals."

Like everyone you dutifully wave your fan and give a polite nod in congratulations. Even as your eye spots that Li has a weakness on his left side...you can't participate in a jiujutsu tournament, but you had your own skill at the art...and so far you hadn't seen anyone you thought you'd be helpless against.

Beside you a woman grunts. Hida Ginchiyo like most of her kin is a giant of a samurai, easily an inch taller than you, and with substantial muscles. Your new shogun is looking over the scene with an intense focus.

"The Utaku hesitated too much, he could have had the match" She says out of the corner of her mouth. Her voice far too rough for a proper woman, but it suits her.

"I don't disagree Hida-san." You admit.

"Still an interesting tournament. I wish I could have participated in it." She admits.

"Hai, but a Shogun cannot brawl so freely" You say.

"No, she cannot, even if she is already itching to get to work." Ginchiyo says.

"It is good to get used to and prepared for the task at hand rather than diving into things" You say.

"My Emperor, I have been preparing for this task since I competed in Otomo Kaneka-dono's tournament. I did not think I would be chosen, but I believed I would be a right hand woman as it were..."

"You think Bayushi-san or Isawa-san would have picked you?" You ask.

That was...an impressive level of confidence.

"I think that the Crab make the best defenders in the Empire, and that our greatest threat outside of..." she stops herself. "That foe, is the offensive from the Yodotai. Just because we competed, is no cause to ignore my skills."

"Hmm. So you see your position as preparing for the Yodotai?" You ask.

"...Hai, and all other threats to the Holy Tenno." She says.

"Not the Empire?"

"That way lays the madness of Shoju, I will not tread it" She answers simply.

"I see..ah looks like the new fighters are coming." You say.

In the duelling circle a Crane and a Scorpion match up against each other. The Crane was a lithe woman who won most of her matches through mastery of Mizu-do. The Scorpion was a woman of similar build but preferred the far more aggressive tsuchi-do.

"The Crane will win." Ginchiyo says.

You say nothing, but watch the match wondering if the Hida will prove right.
--------------------------------------

Month of the Rat Twenty Ninth Day

You wonder why that memory came back to you now, as you took tea with Togashi Satsu. Was it because that Ginchiyo had been right? Or was it just because the woman who had escorted you in matched Ginchiyo for size? Whatever the reason for it, you pushed it out of your head. You had to focus, even if was still bloody cold.

Satsu's steady calm as he pours tea, in front of you feels too practiced, to be normal, yet somehow, you feel like he was born pouring tea that way. The Dragon have done nothing but confuse you for this last month. Constantly holding small competitions and putting riddles everywhere, they've done nothing but confuse everyone else as well. Still, you can't say it's been a bad winter court except for the cold, and you're mostly sure they didn't decide to summon the fiercest winter in thirty years just for your visit...mostly.

Your eyes glide over to the third cup he pours. Another riddle or something else? Satsu follows your gaze before looking back with those eyes of his. Eyes that say he knows everything and nothing at the same time. In other words, they're quintessentially Dragon. You won't give him the satisfaction of asking him who the third cup is for.

Instead you enjoy the fragrant tea, and let him broach things in this own time. It is really good tea after all...might need to, 'take' his brewer, Kaname would love it, even if she decided not to leave your ishiken child alone just yet. An Ishiken, and already her hair was going white...you had to be careful with Yuina...what happened to your uncle could not be permitted.

There's a clap at the door, and Satsu rises up and opens it. You look at the sliding door, an old man, impossibly wrinkled with age, approaches. Despite his age, all of his visible skin is entirely covered i tattoos that somehow work with the wrinkles to look perfect. Last of all were his eyes, almost eerie in the way they seemed to shine with an inner light, the empty white retinas showed no pupils.

"My Mikado...allow me to introduce my grandfather. Togashi-no-kami" Satsu says.

"Toturi-san." Togashi says. "It's good to meet you at last...we have a lot to discuss."

[] Write in.

(AN: You can react pretty much however you want. Keep in mind that as far as most people knew, Togashi died on the Second day of Thunder....also you know demigod)

[X] Why have you not been assisting us with the laundry list of problems that face the Empire? Have you finally overcome your nigh criminal laziness?

Seriously fuck Togashi.

[X] Greetings Togashi-no-kami. You say we have much to discuss? About what?
-[x] basically just roll with it as you are unlikely to get a straight answer as to why now he appears now instead of all the times he could have been helpful.
--[x] internally worry that a third day of Thunder is approaching and just why an immortal Kami appears Old.
---[X] it could also be just be Him congratulating you on a job well done or deciding to troll you in person since you were visiting his home anyway.

I'd love to play the insollent child, but Togashi is a cheating bastard, and whatever is about to occur, should be comparable to a whole cooked whale for an emperor to eat with their dinner.

For example as emperor can we command Togashi to commit seppuku, or any command at all?

[X] "How dare you show yourself now after you upset the realms a thousand times over? Do you not have the decency to die at least when the realm has mourned you?"
-[X] Throw Sake Bottle at Togashi
-[X] "If you bear any love for the new line of the Emporer, then be gone and never reappear. Or challenge the throne and place yourself on it. You would succeed, but you would be cursed for it."
-[X] Leave this place -immediatly- after Togashi spoke his piece (because there is no way to avoid it)

"That way lays the madness of Shoju, I will not trod it" She answers simply.
Wrong tense, should be tread.
That say he knows everything and nothing at the same time.
They say that?

Hang on guys, as I understand it we expect Togashi to be old. He was the only one of the Kami to think Rokugan still needed them so he gets constantly reborn into the family in a mortal body.

I thought that was a cover story and He lived between the first day of Thunder and the second by pretending to be his own grandson.

Besides all the other Kami didn't seem to suffer the ravages of age, and it hasn't been that long since the second day of Thunder by demigodly reckoning.

Anyway Hisao might know but I don't.

@gman391 is Togashi-no-kami supposed to appear old?

Togashi is as far as Hisao knew, dead. So he's not sure if Togashi should appear old or not. There's some indications that the gods have some shape shifting powers. (Togashi himself could turn into a mutherflippling dragon) So how much of Togashi's apparent age is Togashi being Togashi, or the result of actual age...he doesn't know.

Fair enough.

As far as the other votes... when nonhostile Gods walk the earth, it behooves one to be respectful, even for the Emperor.
