Typechange Johto

Regarding MC father… what? I haven't seen indication that the MC has a father, let alone who they are. Granted, I could easily have missed something, but the only family I've seen is the mother at the beginning of the game.

He was more important during the pre-johto set up period, but yeah Alexa's Dad is a professor, it's how she got a lot of these fancy materials.

Ah, I had misunderstood you as well. Professor Alexander Larch likely does not have access to rare pokemon like that yet... unless I do come up with stuff that results in similar changes in pokemon, and I will admit that now there are canon robo-pokemon I am tempted to make a robo-change method.

I just read through all this (honestly I liked it so much I read it twice) and I just had the idea that she gets so sick and tired of not being able to understand Pokemon as a human she gets an ear translator like Whitneys' got, but the moment she uses it it goes the way charizards translator and becomes an earring or stud fused into her ear

Quite plausible as a thing to happen if she ends up with a reason to stay human for some time.

I love this from the perspective of keeping Alexa and Charizard balanced in their own way, as well as the fact that Alexa does sometimes seem frustrated at losing the ability to understand half a conversation mid-transformation sometimes. But on the other hand, I'm half expecting that frustration to trigger some aspect of her "Legendariness" and cause her to spontaneously start understanding Pokémon. Possibly with side effects due to the ability coming from her Legendary status.

Of course, either way would be funny. Just wanted to offer an alternative idea.

Another possibility, although a slightly more remote one. Alexa is more likely to get a small translator for her human form or to learn how to change herself more quickly.
Although as a side effect of that second one does fit this idea.

Spoilers for S/V endgame, Potential spoilers for S/V DLC? Speculation
It's implied Terastal energy is the result of a third Legendary mon we haven't seen yet(described as resembling a disk with a bunch of hexagons). Terastal energy seems to be mostly associated with Type Change, which makes me wonder if Alexa could eventually expect a call from this 3rd Legendary(I'm gonna call them Chartreuse for now) for stealing their schtick? Hit her with the Cease and Desist

Interesting, and a complication I honestly did not expect when I started writing this story.

Given that Terastallizing has a somewhat standardized effect in generating a crown of the type involved alongside a coat of crystals and Alexa's involve extreme biological modification? There won't be a C&D and more a "How the hell are you pulling that off?

Beyond that, I haven't gone into Sector Zero in game yet so I haven't seen that information, it's good to expect it. It's going to make watching Alexa's adventures even more fun.

A part of me has not yet decided if in my setting the various type changing moves (the canon ones) typically have physical changes to the target or not. Some of me says "yes, they do that" though.
Thanks for the information.
I will say it's easy to miss that little bit of lore. Make sure to read the notebooks there!
I am always up for information that ties into what I'm doing with my stories, although with new games keeping things relatively spoiler free, or at least contained, is desirable.
Quick question. Is the OP still accepting ideas for type-changing substances?
I believe so, you can just put whatever you're thinking of.
I am. Not sure how many or which ones will get used in the story proper until I find places for them, but any ideas are welcome.

Origin Sand
I am. Not sure how many or which ones will get used in the story proper until I find places for them, but any ideas are welcome.

Gotcha. Here's mine…

Origin Sand

Every so often, one may find a desert in a nonsensical place. It's not in the rain shadow of any mountains, it's right in the path of an ocean-to-land air current, et cetera, and yet… rain (and sometimes low clouds) just seems to go out of its way to avoid it. Such deserts often contain deposits of Origin Sand beneath the epicenter.

Origin Sand is clear with a slight yellow tint, and enormously fine. It displays the mystical property of repelling water in a radius around it, with that radius growing exponentially with the quantity of the sand. When harvested and ingested by a Pokemon, Origin Sand will transform it into a Ground-type for three hours exactly, no matter how large the dose. (Some cultures used to keep time by it, hence its alternate name of Sands of Time.) This transformation is universally sand-themed.

Long-term exposure to the water-repelling effects of Origin Sand (hereafter referred to as the Hydropellant Field) can cause Pokemon to exhibit regional variations. One of the more dramatic variants is Grimer, which has become a Ground-type in addition to its Poison typing, gains the coloration and consistency of quicksand, and lies in wait beneath berries or objects of value in hopes of catching prey unawares. Another, more bizarre adaptation is Weezing. While its prevolution Koffing is scarcely affected, a Weezing who evolves within a Hydropellant Field gains the Fire typing and an affinity for the move Rain Dance, which it performs by superheating (and then releasing, obviously) a cocktail of gaseous chemicals within itself that encourages the rapid formation of clouds and condensation of water into rain.

One clear indicator of an Origin Sand desert is the presence of a crescent-shaped swamp or lake surrounding one side of it, where the repelled water has collected. This environment serves as a haven for ground-types that are associated with water, such as Mudkip, Wooper, and Stunfisk.

Bloodright Helix
Speaking of type changing items, here's a new one I just thought up of.

Bloodright Helix

These strange items have only recently been discovered, and seem to be accidentally generated as cast off and extra material caused by running certain forms of fossil revival machines. When properly prepared (IE, crushed or ground up and added to other food) they allow a pokemon who knows and maintains what is commonly called an 'egg move' at battle ready levels of mastery to take on the primary type of their parent who passed said 'egg move' down to them, should that type be different then their current types. The amount of time this change maintains itself depends on how much helix matter was ingested, with the longest known time taking up to a month before reversion happened but most incidents reverting within timeframes between a single day to a week. Beyond the type change, physical shifts of effected pokemon tend to be described as 'primeval' or 'dinosaur like', suspected to be because of metaphysical contamination from the fossil revival machines.

So far information on these items and the changes they can cause have remained limited due to the lack of the ability to generate them on demand, instead of having to examine the remains of matter left over from fossil revival efforts to see if any were created by accident, which remains an infrequent occurrence.

Another one with some nice details and interesting effects.
I like the slight disconnect between the physical changes and the resulting type, because they both have thematic causes even if those are different from each other.

I also like that it is extremely rare because of the source of the material, but also a human created substance.

Some nice dichotomies here.
Edit: will update the lists with this one tonight after work.

Oh I like this one. The time keeping note, the water at the edges because of the mechanical effect, and the alternate forms noted for it.
Giving this one a threadmark.

Actually, I came up with another variant between then and now, and I kind of like it. Is it okay if I post that? And if so, do you want it in my already-threadmarked post or in a new one?

Honestly, either way is fine with me. I'm interested, and if it is related to the other one then it would fit in that threadmark, but if it is easier for you then just make a new post.

It is related to Origin Sand, but it's got an entirely different point to it. I'll just make a new post here…

In the communities of Poliwag that live in or around the crescent-shaped lakes and marshes that border Origin Sand deserts, there is a worrying trend. These Poliwags will live as normal Poliwags, evolve into normal Poliwhirl and eventually Poliwrath or Politoed, as they prefer, and spawn new Poliwag in their homes. This, according to them, is the one and only, true way to live.

It is, therefore, very tragic when such a Poliwag evolves into a Poliwhirl within the bounds of a Hydropellant Field, gaining the Ground typing at the cost of the bitter (and sometimes violent) rejection of the only community they've ever known.

These Poliwhirl almost always end up wandering said Hydropellant Field, eventually finding community with other such Poliwhirl in caves beneath the desert, where they train, fight, and meditate without water for extremely long periods of time. This latter activity evolves them into Ground/Fighting-type Poliwrath, which are pillars of such communities. (It is currently unknown whether such Poliwhirl can evolve into Politoed, but the usual methods have been tried and do not work.)

An interesting addition and a regional variant that works in a neat way.

Thank you! I based them on that frog/toad (I forget which) that dehydrates itself for months at a time, and also on those old monks that do something similar. Their rejection from their community, however, is based on those impoverished neighborhoods where everybody defines themselves as poor and/or victims, and don't take it too well when one of their own tries to actually improve their circumstances.

Mystical Education
--- Mystical Education ---

It might have been a bit of a rush to get out of town, but William was past done with Goldenrod by the time they hit Route 35. Alexa was currently in a quickly developed alternate human form that was a bit taller than her normal shape, Charizard was trying out one that looked similar to William's own generic alternate, and the Witch Lily was in a less notable illusionary outfit as well. The plan was to drop them when the crowd from the city thinned, but to be seen together to explain Charizard's new electromagetic gemstone afterwards.

"I still have to charge the thing," Charizard continued to complain about the details of that, now without the translation as it had run out of power due to not being recharged yet since the Starter had gotten the device. "Well at least we have an Electric type on the team."

"We can probably change back soon," Alexa cut off the ongoing discussion of how it had suddenly stopped working with an unexplained annoyance. "I'm ready to have four arms again, they're getting stiff stuck together like this."

"First we find a spot to hide. Never show people your alternate forms if you can help it," William warned in a growl to keep the crowd, thinner than in the city but still quite present, from understanding them. Which fit with the 'pretend to speak like a pokemon' cover they were using for Charizard's sudden loss of human speech. Luckily there was a good spot to change back close by, and the evening crowd cleared quickly in order to find places to stop on the road before nightfall. The fact that nobody saw them leave the city helped keep the crowd from trying to stick together as well since there was nothing interesting to see with their disguises.

"Is that Alexa Larch?" he heard distantly as they emerged once more in their typical appearances. Well, William considered, Alexa herself had an entire collection of them, but apparently that was still recognizable.

"She can be a Bug too?" someone else questioned, but their luck held out as the voices moved on instead of asking them directly.

"This is why we go with our base form's colors most of the time instead of our actual metal color," Charizard commented. "More people mistake us for not being changed."

"Rhydon gets away with looking like a normal Rhydon," Alexa agreed. "Now, I think you had questions about our stuff?" the other pokemon-trainer questioned the Witch, and then started up a discussion of the basics of the various materials.

"So, how did I do?" Charizard asked awkwardly.

"As a human? Alright, but not instantly the best if you are worried about that. Even at the end there," William pointed out. "A lot of humans can act a bit pokemon like, especially those who grew up around them a lot."

They both were quiet for a long moment as they considered the possible implications of that, while the Witch Lily asked for more specifics about Contagion Cure.

"So I managed 'average human' instead of 'obviously human'?" Charizard managed to recover their conversation jokingly. "That's reassuring, I wouldn't want to be obvious about it."

"No, you managed 'strange human', which is common enough that it probably should count as the average but for some reason is not what people call an 'average human'," William, on his pride as a Zoroark that lived among humans, had to correct in a properly noble tone. They both laughed at the faux sincerity.

---

"You have been making substances, not potions, or amulets, or even just mixtures, but instead simple substances that cause a full body transformation in response to changes in types?" Lily asked very specifically.

Alexa was not sure why the Witch was so detailed, but as an expert in magic that only meant it was more important to work out why. "We've developed a few. Although we are trying to work out if they are really new or just rare enough that nobody has easy to access records on them. The Mercury Contagion, as we've been calling it, has historic references from Mercurial Ninetails making it, and my parents just used Contagion Cure to help someone who ran into one of those and thought they were stuck as a Vipercury," she answered, hopefully clarifying the situation. "Magma Contagion so far hasn't been something that existed before, and we have not been able to look too deeply into the new one yet."

"Mercurial Ninetails are currently Legendary pokemon. That might change now that you are handing out their stuff, but those are not typical pokemon," Lily explained slowly. "Those are not typical materials, and you are making new ones."

"The extreme part at the moment is using a lesson from Celebi to work out how to accelerate changes so we don't need to wait the whole duration," Charizard chimed in. "We know everyone on our team is Legendary, and apparently with the theme of changing types."

"What do you know about magic?" Lily questioned seriously.

"Don't mess with any magic unless you know what you are doing," Alexa easily replied. "Applied metaphysics is not a stable field in the way engineering is, and the biggest risk is from associations or effects that you did not expect. Either from energies you did not account for causing additional magical effects, or from a misunderstanding of the metaphysical aspects you are actually working with."

"Right, that is a good start," Lily confirmed. "Magic is the term for using methods to affect the world using metaphysical aspects. It is doing things based more on how people perceive the stuff you use than the inherent properties the stuff just has. With things that are thought of in a consistent way that can let you do impressive things, but with things that aren't as well established it can vary greatly based on who casts the spell and who is around them at the time."

The Witch deliberately paused, clearly to make sure they were paying close attention. Alexa shifted a bit nervously at how Lily stopped there.

"Everything a Legendary pokemon does can severely impact metaphysical aspects," Lily bluntly declared. "They can even throw off spells with normally stable metaphysics just by being there. A Legendary magic user generally has an easier time, because their nature impacts metaphysics more directly than a normal magic user, but they also need to be aware that their nature will impact every magic they try and use." The Witch took a deep breath. "If you guys can make new kinds of this stuff you probably can't do any magic without having a risk of changing someone, but you also can probably learn any spell that does it on purpose easily. In fact you can probably make or use spells that nobody else can with those effects."

"How much do I have to worry about my species' magic while I'm around them?" William asked while Alexa nervously considered the idea that it would just be easy to use the part she actually was interested in. There were some options her father had found and tested that were magical in nature, but for actual spells they had held off for safety. She wasn't sure what to think about the idea of spells her team could use but others couldn't.

"None if you don't use it for much more than the spells to aid with illusions on what you are shaped like," the Witch pointed out. "But more complex illusions might get thrown off a bit. I would think you would have noticed if you've been traveling together very long."

"I don't use any others normally," William admitted slowly. "I know some others, but they are for emergencies at most, and actually they are still shape changing illusions. Stuff to change others temporarily if it is badly needed, like if you need wings because you fell off a cliff."

Alexa nodded at that with some relief. "Okay, can you go over anything else I need to know if I do start looking into those options?" she asked. "I have a short list to ask about specifically." Although that was more for academic reasons than a real desire to use them. The majority of those spells either had really specific duration or conditions for when they reversed, both of which were harder to work around given the added complexity for the spells involved.

"You already have a list," Lily said a lot less enthusiastically. "I don't suppose you're part of why Gary Oak sent me a message that he didn't need me to look into Steel typed curses anymore?"

"Contagion Cure reverses the Vipercury transformation," Alexa answered. "My parents were going to look into Vipercury themselves when he asked for help with being stuck as one."

"Vipercury aren't a move?" Lily questioned. "I was sure they were a Legendary pokemon animating the material they were based on, with a curse to turn humans into a living move for a while." Alexa was not sure she wanted to know what 'a while' really meant in that context. "I can't tell if Vipercury being a pokemon on their own is more or less worrying."

"Pokeball Crafter Maizie has taken to being one from time to time," Charizard informed the Witch.

"That is another point for 'being their own pokemon', but it still could be either way for the worrying," Lily replied with a sigh. "Let me see this list."

---

"So, this is the safest and yet most dangerous list of spells I've ever seen," Lily pointed out a good hour later and not very far down the route. "First off, you have 'Fire Heart', 'Water Heart', 'Grass Heart', along with literally every 'type-Heart' spell that exists here with complete herb requirements for each. Do you even have the depleted evolution stones to use as a focus for each of those?"

"Not with us, but I could get them easily enough," Alexa answered. "The herb mixes and the source of the type are the problem there. Those are really made to make a type stronger for a pokemon, so you would only want to make one mix and use the pokemon themselves as the source. It is just the easiest set that covers every type."

"Okay, how about both Sludge Slide and Sand Slide? I would think you would leave off the first of those given it needs Toxin Contagion to use and doesn't really change types any differently," Lily said with a sigh. "Two different spells to make it so you can use Acid Armor to get through things?"

"We still have Sludge Slide there because we found it first, and not all Toxin Contagion forms can use Acid Armor," Alexa explained with a cringe. Those two were something she might need in an emergency, but it would have to be a rather strange one. "Sand Slide is more practical here, as being turned into sand gives you more options than sludge. Although neither of them are really that great for battle given you just turn back when you touch any clean water."

"Those are a pair of spells that both change the caster along with the targets," Lily informed her, and caused William to stop to stare at both of them. "It turns everyone that is near you into sludge or sand until you hit water."

"Oh. That honestly works better for what I planned," Alexa admitted. "I was worried I'd have to cast it more than once if we got stuck somewhere and needed one to get out."

"Does it turn each of us into sand separately, or one big pile of sand?" Charizard asked for clarification.

"Not sure, the books I've read that mention it don't clarify, and I haven't seen a proper spell for it before this one here," Lily unfortunately failed to answer. "You'd possibly want to ask a Muk about that one, they might have a clearer answer about how that sort of thing works."

"Should have asked that Sandslash more questions," Charizard complained confusingly. "The one we tested Mercury Contagion with? One of the foxes ended up inside of her back for a bit."

"Oh, right, when dad had me try and work with other pokemon for the tests. I guess we should have asked more about that instead of just going past it," Alexa remembered. "Maybe we could call- no, dad doesn't have access to easy translation- well, actually he does now doesn't he?"

"We could try it out I guess," Charizard offered. "Maybe ask the others. Not just the spell, I think most of us have fully molten forms now. Usually from Mercury Contagion actually."

"That was not where I expected this discussion to go," Lily slowly said. "I was kind of expecting more concern."

"No, you do not want to see concern," William pointed out, and Alexa frowned at him. "That has a lot less worry and a lot more plotting."

"We just wanted to apologize," Alexa grumbled. "Or to fix it, but I guess there was nothing to fix in the end." She might not have stopped looking for a possible reversal regardless. Removal of a type was harder to pull off than addition, but she know it did fit in her capabilities from Contagion Cure.

"I'm going to want to see how you usually work before I leave you without more magic training," Lily noted uncertainly.

"Well, I do want to work on developing a possible Ice type Contagion from Rime Dust," Alexa more cheerfully declared. "Let me get out my team."

[Author's Note]
Going into some detail about magic here, although I still have a Harry Potter/PMD crossover idea that I would rather use to go into more detail about such things.
Alexa's spell book has also gotten its first described spells. A generic one that is similar to the new mechanic, but not. Type-Heart spells add a third type if they don't just boost an existing type.
Also Acid Armor on demand spells because I like the concept too much.

Interesting chapter! Nice to see things get explained and new ideas bounce off each other.

I take it the Acid Armour spells end up being a precursor to the TR version in DSS? Or is it an in-universe coincidence?
