Typechange Johto

Edited my Spoon Gourd writeups a bit. The Bulbasaur line now has a more interesting standard ability than Overgrow, Solarmind got a nerf, Tyrannomoth is a bit jankier stat-wise, and Venomoth now learns a move upon evolution that, combined with its pre-existing ability, portrays the agonized state they're in.

So here you go, an originally Bug-type Pokémon that lost such a type, in this case Rock. That said, their Flare Boost ability gives them a nasty trick against a Vespikiln who likes taking their time.

Oh those are interesting. I take it the idea for the Gulpin is that they are a rare pokemon that isn't affected by the Chitin Powder and a pest for Vespikiln as a result?

The Ninjask presumably are also somewhat pests or possibly pets given the Fire type and ability resistance. I like that even if Chitin Powder was noted in the first Typechange to specifically remove types that are not favorable to Bugs.
Typically Vespikiln are the only Fire types near their hives, but I like this exception.

Gulpin: Not exactly. Yes, they're not affected by Chitin Powder, but that's not why they're pests. They're pests because they stink, badly. And they love Chitin Powder, so they keep coming back.

Just because they love Chitin Powder, however, doesn't mean it's good for them. They suffer a similar problem to a human with tightly-bound type energy eating Lattice Lettuce, though the symptoms are less immediately obvious than tracheal lacerations. These Gulpin can't digest Chitin Powder properly, so it sits in their body and accumulates, causing gastric issues and eventual death. In the absence of Vespikiln to ward them off, the population of these particular Gulpin took a steep nosedive, until the survivors figured out that they shouldn't eat Chitin Powder (a truly foreign concept to Gulpin, considering their Pokédex entries say they can eat literally everything).

Incidentally, this particular variety of Gulpin doesn't originate with the Vespikiln hives; they originated elsewhere, and were only drawn to the hives by the promise of Chitin Powder.

I leave it to you to determine whether regular Gulpin are immune to Chitin Powder and whether they can digest it if they are, but they avoid eating it if there's a choice. That the poop!Gulpin enjoy it originates with what amounts to a genetic hiccup.

Ninjask: You're kind of right and kind of wrong about them being pets. They were basically hunting dogs, chasing down/flushing out prey for their Vespikiln masters (though they were significantly more high-maintenance than actual dogs, but this was counterbalanced by the advantages offered by aerial combat supremacy). Notably, the move Bug Bomb isn't innate to the line; it's a hunting tactic developed by the Vespikiln, creating a lot of flash and noise to scare the prey out of cover without harming the forests too much (like a Fire-type move might do).

Very interesting.
Honestly, "the pests aren't even healthy eating the stuff" doesn't sound like an uncommon way for pests to turn out, but the idea does make a nice bit of world building.
Hunting dogs, but ninja bug, does sound like an interesting thing that the Vespikiln could do when given access to another Bug/Fire.

I actually do have a partial story idea for a Vespikiln character, although I'm not sure if/when it would end up written. I mentioned it before, but the idea of dropping one in Hollownest from Hollow Knight before the fall is somewhat interesting to me.
Part of the idea being "that is obviously a god" going on with the elemental fire bug person, who really is awkward about it because her kind sort of did once make themselves the rulers of local Bug type kind in the ancient past.
So it technically isn't entirely untrue, but they try to not be like that anymore.

As for the Zubat line, they're not nearly as interesting. They moved in after the Vespikiln disappeared, got affected by Chitin Powder for so long, over multiple generations, that it basically became permanent, and that's that.

I don't know a thing about Hollow Knight, so I can't speak on the topic.
That is an interesting detail to me, and one I had not gotten from the stats post alone.
You seem to have thought through your ideas on these much more than you actually said at first when you posted that one. Is there a reason you didn't include these details there?

Honestly, I came up with half the details in response to your question. I knew I wanted the Ninjask to be partner Pokémon to the Vespikiln, and I knew I wanted the Gulpin to be pests because they stank, but that's it.

When you brought up the whole 'eating Chitin Powder' thing, I thought, 'hey, that's a good idea,' then 'wait, but if the Gulpin eat Chitin Powder, and nobody's producing it, then why is there still Chitin Powder in the world?' That's how I came up with the idea of Chitin Powder being a delicious toxin to them.

EDIT: No, you didn't come up with the 'eating Chitin Powder' idea. I did, while reading Gulpin's Pokédex entries. It says something about how haphazard my planning processes are that I can't even cite my sources correctly.

Honestly, the Zubat are the only ones that survived my haphazard planning process unchanged from initial conception.

Edit: Also, tweaked the Zubat line last night. Their Abilities are now more fitting, I think, and Crobat gets a signature move.

That is basically how writing works to be honest. You come up with ideas that sound neat to you, say them to someone else, get asked a question by those other people, and suddenly have details you missed before because of the question.

Came up with three more new lines for my Vespikiln Hives write-up. One of them is based on a joke.
They look neat. Not sure what you are thinking visually for the Crustle line there, but I do like how you took that detail, and I assume that the Yamask is supposed to be former Vespikiln in this context.

I did go with the obvious result for all the Legendary Beasts with this Contagion, but at the same time I kind of like it as an oddball way to have those show up.
Huh. Wonder if that means means Swords of Justice exposed to a psychic-type change would turn into their Paradox Forms, then?

... and yet now that you mention that I am trying to figure out what a "Primal Mew" would be like...
If I had to guess, probably similar to a Ditto in terms of substance, both due to "primordial soup", and to reference the common internet theory that Ditto are failed clones of Mew.
Fits the past theming, and the fact that Paradox Pokémon are basically conspiracy theories for their alternate game.

Added a pair of Pokémon to my Vespikiln Hives write up. These two are meant to counter Vespikiln as a pair act.
I like them. A hazard to face is always important to have.

That is an option there, but I do sort of want to develop a machine-pokemon change too. I think there have been a couple suggestions in the thread, but it just never really fit into the story proper.

I do like that idea, although I can't tell how much of that like is a general enjoyment of goo creatures.

I imagine for a change to default to Paradox forms it needs to A)Be for the correct type(Dragon works for the Beasts, but a Cyclizar would need something Fighting or Electric if you ignore 'Dons being Legendary) and B)thematically appropriate (again, dinosaurs are close enough for Dragon Contagion to work, but the Swords of Justice would need something both Psychic and either mechanical or lightsaberey).
There's probably also a few instances that are particularly difficult to default to a change-Roaring Moon is a Paradox of a Mega, and Iron Valiant is a combo of both Kirlia evolutions.

I like them. A hazard to face is always important to have.

Upon further thought, I think the Vespikiln might have started training Ninjask in part to deal with the combination. Bug Bomb is a Bug-typed move, and therefore neither resisted by either Pokémon nor weakened by Rain Dance, on top of being a Physical Move, and thus not affected by Water Barrier. Furthermore, it causes confusion, which outside of the games might cause the Pokémon to confuse friend with foe, thus ruining their synergy.

I love it when a story comes together.

Yeah, it being complicated in those ways sounds about right.
Although the story does have an Iron Valiant. My first thought on that specifically is that it probably can result from an evolution-change when the right thing is exposed to a Kirlia.

Always a nice moment when the ideas fit together after you have had them all independently. The recent chapters have had a few bits like that for me that I hope work out well.

Although the story does have an Iron Valiant.
Admittedly given that one seems to be an Area Zero escapee it's probably from a world/time where it's a standard evolution of a Kirlia variant/new species, like what Belossom's reptile becomes.
My first thought on that specifically is that it probably can result from an evolution-change when the right thing is exposed to a Kirlia.
Thinking on it Slither Wing is probably also in the category of 'manifests as evolution' because of how it's built; Larvesta's notably a physical attacker to its evolution's special attacker, so Slither makes sense as a past continuation of Larvesta's statline.

True, although at the time of writing that we didn't yet have confirmation about how that worked.
I think how it works fits perfectly with the setting I have as a whole, but we didn't know for sure back when I risked adding one.

It is a way to handle some of the odder options with the paradox pokemon that works in interesting ways.

Blackthorn City
--- Blackthorn City ---

Alexa knew what Blackthorn used to look like. She had seen a picture from when her mother was on a League from this Ice Path exit towards the city, although the stories she had heard of that time weren't really helpful here from what it looked like now. There used to be a good distance between the cavern entrance and the city itself you needed to cross, and there used to be a lot of open areas around the city where you could train or find local wild pokemon that were visible from the cave.

Those spaces outside of the city were not there anymore, and there were a lot more buildings larger than anything that had been shown in the picture. Alexa wasn't sure exactly why Blackthorn had grown so much, although it was possibly because of the Hoenn disaster, but she did find it an unpleasant discovery to see a city that now seemed to rival Goldenrod for size.

"I'm half tempted to vanish into my ball again," she admitted to the others as she felt her sparks start to be a bit more uncontrolled. William, Suicune, and Charizard were with her, and all currently part Dragon too, so they were drawing a notable amount of attention.

"I think I understand why, but please stay out at least long enough for us to figure out where we need to go," Charizard requested, but he was clearly busy looking around. "I have a feeling this could get complicated. I can see a few transformed around, but they aren't looking at us the way the locals are."

"There is a lot of Dragon themed clothing on the locals too," William growled thoughtfully as they looked at a number of humans, and a few pokemon, wearing clothes that looked like Dragon type pokemon parts. "I think we should start with finding the Gym. I also think we shouldn't have arrived with the Dragon type." Among the locals was what Alexa could only call the most jealous looking Charmeleon to ever look at her Charizard, wearing a rather nice looking Garchomp themed hoodie that was clearly older than most clothes on display.

"Water for my secondary type, to be clear," Charizard actually called out to the little char, who sighed dramatically at the clarification. "Also this one doesn't last long at all."

"None of them last long enough," the Charmeleon complained, and a little translator hidden in the hoodie repeated her words. "I don't wanna just fly, I want to do something interesting."

"And what do you think is 'interesting'?" Alexa had to ask now that they were talking with the pokemon. It was still a bit odd to see a pokemon with a translator, but the oddest part here was that Alexa couldn't see anyone with the char. Admittedly Alexa couldn't be sure the Charmeleon wasn't older than she was, but even with some clothes and a translator she didn't expect to find a regular pokemon on their own already.

"I guess swimming is okay, and I'd like to tunnel more, but it is hard to pick just one thing," the Charmeleon said gruffly. "I'm Sally, and I am not a battle pokemon." That sounded like it was something the pokemon said a lot. "Are one of you 'Alexa Larch'? Cause none of you look normal."

"Yeah, my trainer is Alexa." Charizard looked at the smaller char carefully as he pointed at Alexa. "I assume you evolved as quickly as you could?" he more quietly asked as they approached the local pokemon. "To not be a Sally-mander."

"I'm fine with being a Sally-mander, I just wanted my horn," the Charmeleon answered with an amused huff. "This is the Dragon Clan's city, you need to look the part." The statement was entirely sarcastic, or perhaps a quote from someone Sally knew. "If you are Alexa then maybe you can actually help me try to be interesting for longer?"

"I can try, but I do want to hear more about you first," Alexa specified carefully. "It looks like about half the people here probably want to try the Dragon type."

"Please don't just give out the Dragon type to anyone," Sally sighed in agreement and tugged the hoodie over her head. "If you're up for it I can probably explain the crowd. Come on, the Gym's this way, and I doubt we will find a better place to talk."

That clearly was a reaction that amused both Suicune and apparently William, but at least it was an easy way to find the Gym. Sally quickly showed them the way, clearly familiar with the place as they were led down a number of side streets full of older buildings away from the larger crowds. Admittedly not the safest place to follow a strange person, but Alexa doubted that it could be too bad of a trap for her current group without also being dangerous for them to not take the chance too.

"Right, so. First off, this is an older translator. Well, not this one, but my old one was an old one," Sally started once they were next to the Gym, where a trainer who seemed to be standing guard at the entrance clearly recognized the Charmeleon. "My parents weren't, well- They aren't both- They couldn't have kids, and I didn't want to fight. We fit together."

"Sally is the adopted daughter of two of our Clan members," one of the local Gym trainers clarified, although sounding like he was leaving something out. "We got her one of the first translators we could find so she could speak with people outside the Clan." Alexa looked at him with a bit of interest from how he worded that. "Chars are close enough to Dragon types for us to understand them too."

"It is nice to be able to talk to all humans instead of just some of them," Sally agreed with a huff. "Honestly... Honestly, if you could make me human I would like to try that, but I know that's harder."

"Sorry, I'm more about turning humans into pokemon than pokemon into humans at this point," Alexa grumbled as she really looked at the Charmeleon's clothes. They were made for the other girl, clearly custom stuff but not brand new stuff. Well cared for and used. "But I guess I can at least make you a bit more unique if you wanted."

"Sally, you're back," Leader Clair then said distractedly. "I don't suppose you found Alexa Larch on the way home?"

"I did, mom. I was just asking her about stuff," Sally then said to the Gym Leader, and Alexa felt a lot more uncomfortable about talking with the young pokemon first.

"Sally, please wait until after my Gym battle with Legendary Larch and her team for any new type changes," Clair requested with a sigh. "I'd like to avoid knowing too much about what she can or can't do until afterwards."

"She's growling," William said quietly. "Like a pokemon, I didn't know humans could pull that off that well." Which implied Clair might not be a normal human, but that wasn't actually that odd by this point.

"The Dragon Clan has always been close to Dragon pokemon," Clair answered, apparently still able to hear him. "I've heard that you have access to a few fusion relic cores, ones old enough to work without the rest of the artifact that is meant to give the gemstones that property."

"Um, well we started with one, and sort of just made some more," Alexa admitted, hoping that she was right about this being about Hydreigon Spinels. "Are they sacred or something?"

"No, they are just hard to make," Clair replied looking at Alexa with much more consideration. "They are used, at least in this Dragon Clan, as a way to bond more closely with our pokemon."

"Mom says that it isn't usually like how she 'bonds' with dad," Sally said to Clair's immediate embarrassment. "You still haven't told me what that means!"

"I'm going to assume that usually it is sibling like," Alexa said aloud to try and not think about what exactly that detail implied. "But I guess you mean there are long term side effects?"

"It is a degree of closeness," Clair said with a bit of a look at her confused daughter. "Which when used enough bleeds through some features, although only over generations of use normally. Dragon typed pokemon raised by the Clan are more human in nature, but Dragon Clan humans are more Dragon in nature as well. We are talking openly about this because it concerns your own nature, Legendary Larch." The Gym Leader looked Alexa in the eyes seriously. "You are capable of changing that sort of nature for both humans and pokemon more directly. Which means that there is now more impact on this city than we already faced from its rapid growth."

"I was going to tell them," Sally said to her mother gruffly. "Everyone wants to be like Dragons. Half the city wants to train Dragons, the other half wants to be them, and everyone wants to join the Clan."

"Sadly, the decision to house a number of refugees during the Hoenn crisis did not go well for us," Clair admitted, but nodded at Sally to let her daughter continue.

"They all showed up, and then we found nice stuff while digging out the mountain more for places to put them. So a lot of them stayed here," Sally then more happily continued, although it didn't sound like Sally was old enough to have really seen this herself. "Then we just kept getting bigger and bigger. They dug out the caves that lead here more, and now people are living in Dark Cave and I've heard that the Delibird are making a 'Snowdrop Town' in the Ice Path. So we've got even more people here, and dad doesn't like humans outside the Clan that much."

Alexa looked carefully at the rest of her group at that last detail. William was giving Leader Clair a strange look, Suicune looked far too amused, and Charizard clearly had decided to not think too hard about the implications of who Leader Clair was with. As long as they didn't face a two headed Dragon that was both of Sally's adoptive parents at once, Alexa didn't want to comment on it.

Unfortunately the grumpiest looking Dragonite Alexa had ever seen walked in and gave Alexa's group what she could only think of as a fatherly threatening look. "Clair, are we having the Legendary Gym Battle now?" the Dragon/Flying typed pokemon questioned. "I want to see what they can do." Despite the dark look he seemed happy to meet them. "And I know our daughter has been excited to see them as well."

"Dad!" Sally cried out and tugged her hoodie down tighter. "Don't say it like that!"

"I think we are ready whenever you have time," Charizard suggested, and Alexa would honestly be happy to hear they could do it today. "From the sound of things we have more time than any Gym Leader has right now."

"No, Terence, we are not ready for a Gym match against a team of Legendary pokemon today. We already have the spot filled today, and the plan is to give them a slot two days from when they told me they were ready," Clair sighed with an exasperated look at her- Alexa realized she did not know what Clair and Terence were to each other, and that she didn't know how to ask. "As much as my family wants to do it immediately, I have full slots for today and tomorrow, but if you are ready two days from now I can fit you in a slot I've been keeping somewhat open for you."

"Which has been working well," Terence admitted a bit unhappily. "It is nice having a spot for whoever shows up during the day that isn't planned ahead very far, but I want to get an actual fight. Not just standing back and playing Gym Leader. I've dealt with being a pokemon most of my life by getting to battle, not going back to human stuff."

"Okay, now I'm a bit more confused," William finally said to address the oddity going on. "You two aren't just a regular human and a regular pokemon who are together?"

"I am technically a former human," Terence answered with a sigh. "Changed when I was young into a Dratini by an artifact I mistakenly touched. A rare risk for Clan children, my father was responsible for that particular artifact and did not store it quite properly. It is meant for the purpose of helping Clan members who prefer the pokemon side of existence over the human, but I was too young for that choice at the time. Unfortunately the human change counterpart was lost some time ago."

"It's only been twenty years, Terence," the other Gym trainer present cut in. "Don't make it sound like it was ages ago, it happened like a week before. There is a reason your dad didn't stay the one in charge of those things. We're pretty sure he lost it in the Dragon's Den somewhere, and we'll only find it again when a new human comes out angry about being changed randomly."

Sally looked uneasy with that particular topic, and Alexa was half tempted to try and look for the thing if they could in the two days they apparently had before the match.

"I'm not sure it is the best suggestion, given she's the Fairy type Gym Leader, but Leader Gardevoir of the Iridescent Gym is a trinket maker," Charizard suggested carefully. "I don't know enough about that to know if it causes issues with the specifics, but it is an option."

"We have a Fairy type Gym?" Sally asked with confusion. "There aren't any Fairy types in Johto, not unless you import them. We nearly don't have any native Dragon types, and Fairy types just didn't stick without common Dragon attacks."

"We do have some Dragonair that are hoping we get it back to become trainers," Terence admitted in a bit of a defeated tone. "We might need to go to the Legendary Fairy for a new one."

"It will have to wait until we don't need every Gym Leader level trainer doing the most matches they can handle," Clair pointed out. "But you are right, especially with the new changes to the world. We had the ability to change between the two cases for a long time, and we likely will want it back sooner rather than later."

---

Sally didn't comment more about that, but did stick with them as they went over the open time slot for the Gym match. Then with her parents permission, and a request not to allow the Charmeleon to ask about changes, they left with Sally to visit a few places around the city that were noteworthy.

"So, so I'm a couple of years from being able to be a trainer," the Charmeleon admitted as she took them to a small restaurant that sold a variety of pokemon focused meals. "And I haven't decided if I want to do that yet, or if I want to be human at all."

"You don't have to be one to be the other," Charizard had to point out as it became increasingly clear that Sally was aware enough to only talk about this sort of thing where only other people in her Clan could hear, but also apparently thinking that meant she could keep it a secret from her parents. "Honestly, by next year you'd probably be more left out if you hadn't tried both with how it is going."

He looked over to Alexa for help, but the restaurant catered mostly towards Dragon typed and dragon-like pokemon tastes, and apparently from how quickly the meal was disappearing that was the stuff Alexa liked best. In fact, he was slightly worried about interrupting the Dragon/Electric pokemon.

"Yeah, would you believe that the new transformed humans are actually better about the whole Dragon Clan thing than the rest of the tourists?" Sally admitted more cheerfully. "Mom thinks they already know better what they want to be, so they aren't wondering as much about working with Dragons. Although they have made everyone else start asking more about being Dragons, but at least they aren't asking that with them."

"It has been a while since I've been home, but I think we did get a few tourists like that," William admitted thoughtfully as he picked at the food. Even as a Dragon type instead of a Dark type it appeared the Zoroark wasn't as fond of the dragon focused foods. "Who now might actually be able to become Zoroark," William added with a look over at Alexa. Who still was entirely focused on the food. "Okay, I think we might have to wait for the food to be gone before we hear anything from Alexa."

"It is good food," Suicune said carefully. "But I do not think most of us think it is that good."

"You weren't there when we went over what kind of food to buy for everyone now that we change all the time. Alexa gets this sort of stuff for herself, just nowhere near this quality," Bellossom pointed out. "Which is possibly why she's doing as well as Goodra with this place."

"I'm still listening, I'm just really happy with what they made here," Goodra commented idly. "I haven't had food this good in a while."

"I wish I could say this is the first time I've seen that sort of thing," Sally laughed with amusement shared with the staff of the place. "But it is actually pretty common for Dragon types that aren't from here. This place makes really good food, but I'm really used to it by now."

"We probably wouldn't be going here normally," Charizard had to note since Alexa was distracted. "We've only recently managed to avoid budget issues, and I can tell this place is expensive. I'm afraid we might end up with new budget problems after Alexa gets done."

"You do charge for the changes, right?" Sally then asked a bit harshly. "Because giving that stuff out isn't good business."

"It isn't about business," Alexa said before Charizard could, which probably said a lot about how strongly they both felt that it was the thing that distracted her from the food. "If someone has found us for a change, if they really want it that badly, then I don't want to charge them for it."

"Not that we wouldn't take stuff for doing it, but we want to use this to help others," Charizard tried to clarify. "We like changing, and we like helping others change if they want to try. Making it something we sell doesn't feel right."

Sally still looked like she wanted to argue, but Suicune cut her off, "They are Legendary, and when Legendary pokemon talk like that it isn't something that changes easily." The still Walking Wake shaped Beast then smirked at Alexa. "Although I personally agree, you probably should ask for something when you are approached by those wanting to change. Even just asking for a story or a reason, but it would be best to not set yourself as too casual of a source for changes. That would make you a rather chaos making Legendary."

"When you put it like that, I guess it does make sense that they don't charge for it," Chesnaught said slyly from where she was not enjoying the food as much as the rest of her team. "I know they threw my team into chaos this year, and we aren't even that bad off compared to the rest of the region."

"Chesnaught, I didn't think you thought so lowly of us," Charizard joked even if what she said was a bit harsh. Although Chesnaught apparently had been looking forward to the Dragon typed Gym, and it was possible she was just still upset about not getting a chance this League. "Even if that is probably true." He then waited for Alexa to say something about that for a moment, and looked over at her when she didn't. "Okay, that's true enough to not be enough to distract Alexa from the food."

[Author's Note]
This one ended up uncertain if it would be split into two or not, and that ended up with it being split here.
The name for the Ice typed town comes from ShiningDarkness on Sufficient Velocity.

So, Blackthorn's become a very busy hub of people with Dragon fascination, either for partnering with them or people wanting to be dragons. Complicating this, the clan has historically been fluid on who's a Pokemon and who isn't, so both options are technically possible but largely kept in the clan. And the "change the dragons into a human" artifact has been misplaced for a while, making things a bit more one-directional for a bit, though with the growing prevalence of Pokemon-Trainers that's probably going to be increasingly less of a concern for those who previously wanted to be human in order to be trainers. But still a concern for those who simply would rather be human.

I'm assuming the transformation isn't something Alexa can reverse, being more like the direct human-to-pokemon without type shifting that she's been unable to deal with in the past, or else she'd have presumably at least mentioned the possibility to Terrance.

Sally has been a lot of fun, and part of me can't wait until the post-Gym Battle interactions when she gets to talk about transformations with Alexa.

Seeing the Snowdrop Town name making it into the story made me grin. Glad you liked it enough to add it.

I thought it worked as a nice set of complications between the rare things of the past and the new things of the present overall.

Alexa is mostly going with this being a long enough time changed that she is going to wait for him to ask before really considering it.

Sally is a character I like writing about too, a nice chance to try out "has been around longer than the new talking pokemon craze".

It was a fitting enough one, and I thought it deserved inclusion. Thank you for the suggestion.

Dragon Challenges
--- Dragon Challenges ---

William found a seat in the stands of the Gym, going for one next to Sally. The Charmeleon was wearing a Hydreigon hoodie now, complete with little fake mouths for her sleeves. "So, I feel like I lost a whole day," he sighed as a greeting.

"Given you spent the whole day trying to find a Clan member with a team available for a fight, I think you did lose one," Sally said dully. "We're all busy, because we actually are used to too many people trying for this Gym near the end of the League. Everyone who can handle a battle with you is also a backup for the official matches."

"I'm guessing that you mean any trainer with eight Badges already?" William questioned, a bit uneasy with that idea. There had to be more trainers that could at least practice against him with their Dragons. Chesnaught was still grumpy, and Alexa vanishing into a pokeball the day before had not actually helped. The shapeshifting trainer had not handled the larger crowds they found well.

"I mean a trainer who has been traveling with an entire team of Legendaries," Sally corrected him as Alexa came out. William was back to his normal Dark type, but Alexa had been keeping her Dragon/Electric type going so everyone could see that new form stand across from Clair. "You showed up as a Dragon typed Zoroark, that's the kind of thing we notice."

"Okay, I'll admit that is a good point," William said, then they both turned to watch the now starting match. The rules were better defined here compared to what he heard before. Alexa's team needed to be Dragon typed when they appeared, and she needed to prove at the end of the match she had at least five who could meet that condition if they didn't all appear, without changing out of the Dragon type. There was no restriction on what Alexa could do to Clair's pokemon.

Alexa started with Kingler, a choice that was a bit fast for that pokemon in William's opinion. "So, how practiced is this one?" Sally asked as Clair sent out a large grey and white reptile pokemon on two legs with a large spiky fin that he didn't recognize. William looked over at Sally. "You know Alexa, and I want to hear more about why mom and dad are going all out. That is why we're worried about you after all."

"Kingler has been a Dragon type at least as long as I've known her. Actually, her Dragon type is probably the only type they have that I haven't seen changed," William honestly answered as he saw the move version of Dragon Contagion remove whatever secondary type Clair was probably counting on.

"Did she just get rid of Baxcalibur's Ice type?" Sally then asked with concern. "Wait, that's a Frozen Flame in Kingler. Oh, Baxcalibur is in real trouble then."

That turned out to be very true. "Kingler wanted to work in the Ice Path for stuff," William admitted with a cringe as Kingler managed an Ice typed spray of spikes. "But they started with her fused to Alexa, with Alexa using the other kind of Frozen Flame."

"She's been part Wendrago?" Sally said dully. "Great, she might sweep mom's entire team." That seemed strangely possible as Kingler seemed to just smash through Baxcalibur while taking relatively little in attacks.

"I would think she had prepared for Dragon typed pokemon given the challenge," William pointed out.

"With secondary types, and the idea that everyone would be new at it," the Charmeleon said, and then sighed with a bit of relief. "Mom's brought Altaria." The blue birdlike cloud Dragon/Flying made William frown, because he could only think of one reason to use that particular pokemon in this fight. "You ever see a Mega Stone?"

"I'm from Kalos," William clarified as the pokemon went from just siting in cloud wings to being a puffy cloud that happened to have a bit of a body and a lot of tail. "And that's probably not enough here. We did go against the Fairy type Gym before we got here."

"How did that go for Kingler?" Sally huffed as Alexa coated Kingler with Magma Contagion.

"She turned her opponent into a Steel type," the Zoroark answered as Alexa called out for a Type Break. "And herself into a Dragon/Fire type."

"Ah," Sally said a bit faintly as the Mega Altaria became a rather hazardous looking cloud of flames and smoke.

"Actually, that might be a problem. Mega evolution doesn't work nicely with disruptions," William admitted as Altaria clearly lost control of themselves and started just burning everything around. Clair looked just entirely perplexed as the Gym Leader returned the pokemon, and then the match stopped for a bit to clarify what exactly had happened. In the end it was announced that Altaria had been removed from the battle, and that Kingler was still able to battle even though Alexa was also switching out to give the crab pokemon some rest.

"Losing control of a Mega pokemon isn't allowed for Gym matches. If your opponent can do that then you've effectively lost that part of the match," Sally explained, a bit more loudly than the rest of their conversation so far. "It doesn't matter how the opponent did it, that is the risk you take when you bring out a Mega evolution."

"That's a bit different from how it goes in Kalos," William admitted a much more quietly. "We have a lot more Mega Stones around, and usually it is only when the pokemon is an outright risk that they are disqualified. You also usually get a chance to fight again without mega evolution."

Charizard emerged on Alexa's side while Sally considered that, and Leader Clair sent out a Kingdra to result in a Dragon/Water typed sort of mirror match. This was mostly just an example of how experienced both pokemon were with the Water type that seemed to keep the Charmeleon totally enthralled for the whole match. It was a fairly close fight when it came to the two trading blows, but it was clear to William that Charizard was the more experienced pokemon.

"Okay, the Water type might be alright," Sally blustered with enthusiasm as Charizard won, although not well enough to be up for another battle right afterwards. "Could I have a lot of options there?" she then asked a bit more carefully.

"Yes, a whole lot," William easily answered. Clair had seemed mostly interested in keeping from hearing about Alexa's team before the match, and that was not a risk now. "They don't quite have every type yet, but some types have multiple options."

Rhydon was next on Alexa's side, and Clair seemed just confused for a moment before she sent out a Garchomp. William thought the Gym Leader might have even discreetly used a type checker to make sure Rhydon was a Dragon. "Like just being a really big plant," Sally pointed out, but she was frowning. "Oh no, mom did it again."

"Clair is doing something?" the Zoroark asked as Garchomp began to vocally complain about this matchup.

"She deliberately does not learn public information on trainers she is really excited to fight. Like the fact that the trainer's Kingler has a Frozen Flame, or that their Rhydon is a Grass type," Sally lamented. "She thinks that being surprised by a strong trainer can be better than knowing what to expect."

"That's why she didn't save the part Ground type for Bellossom," William realized with a wince. "That is not going to go well."

"Okay, one of them was a Bellossom?" Sally questioned with complete confusion. "I'm going to guess that wasn't the bat... actually we only have the lizard and the bat left so I guess that answers that. What was the bat originally?"

"Herman started as a Heracross, although I think he doesn't consider himself one now," William carefully explained, although he was still a bit unsure about the details there. He could understand the idea in theory, he had a couple of relatives that wanted to basically be human and he'd seen enough similar cases so far this League. "I'm not sure if he even knows what he wants to call himself yet."

"I can understand that," Sally sighed as Garchomp did a fairly good job of using Fire typed attacks to give Rhydon some trouble. "I've met a lot of different Dragon types, and while I would like to be one I don't know which one I'd like best."

"Having traveled with Alexa's entire team, I do have to point out that it is possible to just change between a bunch of forms," he noted as Rhydon pinned the land shark down with vines. "Actually, as a Zoroark I probably should point that out too, but I think you mean more like how she changes entirely instead of just how you look."

"Do you have a lot of those costumes?" Suicune then asked, once again disguised in human form, from where she apparently snuck in behind them. "Because Legendaries working together can sometimes result in effects they don't normally produce alone."

Sally gave William a very concerned look at the interruption. "That is Suicune, she might be able to help you try being human for just a bit if you're considering that," William explained. "But I am a bit worried about turning Sally's wardrobe into transformation items. I don't know if we could really trust Alexa's team with that option."

"Become my hoodies?" Sally questioned thoughtfully. "I need to think about that one, looks like mom is using Kommo-o next."

Alexa was switching out for Bellossom for some reason. Rhydon was clearly not up for someone with resistance after the serious fight with Garchomp, but Bellossom didn't really have better types for this particular pokemon. Unless Alexa didn't recognize Kommo-o and thought the loose plate covered Dragon was part Steel type. Which now that he considered it might be something Alexa made the case anyway.

"Finally, a good matc- Did the spiky lizard just splash Kommo-o with metal? Wait, that's the Steel typed Soak?" Sally complained.

"That one 'only' adds a Steel type, it doesn't get rid of the other types," William admitted. "Although I don't know how much that helps here." It occurred to him that Bellossom and Alexa might have been too used to Bellossom being part Fire type.

It in fact turned out to be a rather bad plan, that gave the now triple Dragon/Fighting/Steel type pokemon a very good resistance to everything Bellossom tried for a bit. The only good news for Alexa was that Bellossom was taking the hits very well while they worked out a backup plan.

"Huh, that is a strong pokemon," Sally commented. "I wouldn't expect a new Dragon type to handle those hits. Is this Legendary power?"

"To a degree, but I think in part it is the new transformation," Suicune answered seriously, which didn't seem to be how Sally expected her question to be answered. "This is a pure power change, most of us that tried it ended up bigger. That isn't always proof of extra power, but in this case I think it matters, and Alexa's team is strong enough for the League Tournament."

"Probably not enough to make it very far right now, but they have time to get ready," William agreed as Alexa figured something out. "Oh, I guess Bellossom can use Soak like this." A rapid fire triple crack of Thunder then ended the match rather decisively. Although Bellossom clearly gave a bit too much to get that done, as she collapsed from the effort in a way that resulted in a double knockout being the official call.

"Five pokemon to take down one of the challenger's isn't the best," Sally huffed. "I can't believe how often mom does this. She could have taken out more if she timed the types better here."

"Alexa does need to win to get her last Badge," William pointed out as what appeared to be a somewhat longer break happened. Clair apparently needed something to be brought out for her last pokemon.

"The challenge is to make it through a Gym Battle with a team of five or six pokemon that stay Dragon typed the entire time," Sally bluntly declared. "It isn't to win the match with that restriction. Mom wasn't expecting Alexa to have a full handle on the Dragon type right after getting it for everyone on her team, or for a newly caught Dragon type to manage a full strength Gym team. Alexa winning means she's even stronger than she needed to be for this Badge."

That conversation is cut off before William can ask more by Terence appearing from the next pokeball used by Clair, and then a very fancy looking stone device was taken by both of them. William was still surprised despite half expecting the result, but it appeared Alexa's final opponent was a two headed Dragonite that was partially the Gym Leader herself.

Alexa sparked off quite a bit of electrical power as she considered the next pokemon to use, which William felt was an impressive look for something he knew was actually being indecisive at the moment. After a moment more she sent out Herman anyway, making the second mirror of types so far.

The impressive change that Leader Clair and Terence had just used brought everyone's full attention to the battle. There wasn't any side conversation as Herman and the two headed Dragonite both attempted to hit each other with Dragon typed fire. It was actually a more impressive display with William's knowledge of the details of both sides. Herman's capability to keep away from those attacks showed that he had clearly had a lot of benefit from his long time spent working on his Flying typed forms. On the other hand, Alexa's team had made it very clear that staying fused during a fight was hard even with their ability to easily handle changes, and the Gym Leader could not have practiced this very much given how the crowd reacted.

It was quite impressive looking, with Herman skillfully dancing between two different sources of Dragonbreath. Combined with the way the Gym Leaders were able to land a number of partial hits and keep a constant eye on the bat pokemon it made for a display William was sure most of the audience would remember. Even if it ended up a bit shorter than many probably realized as Herman only got a couple of solid hits before they managed to tag him with one of the fire blasts directly, and from there it was quickly resolved without any chance for Alexa and Herman to shift anyone's types.

"Enough," Clair and Terence said together as Alexa returned the defeated bat. "We cannot win this one. Congratulations, you have earned your Eighth Badge and now officially qualify for the current Silver Conference Pokemon League tournament." They then split apart again, but only after a return to the trainer area on the Gym Leader side.

"Let's get down there," Sally suggested. "I want to talk with mom about this transformation hoodie idea sooner rather than later."

"Clair won't be busy?" William asked as they joined the many others standing up to leave, with Suicune joining them this time.

"I told you, we have a bunch of people covering things so we can actually handle everyone we get," the Charmeleon grumbled. "Mom only does one or two a day herself."

---

Alexa listened to Clair's Garchomp rant at Clair about missing a fight with Bellossom as she filed out the final paperwork for the Gym battle. Her team was tired after that tough battle, and from what she had overheard so far it sounded like this might not have been a battle she was supposed to win to get the Badge. Garchomp seemed to think he wasn't normally used for Gym battles at all, and because of that he deserved to go up against a type advantage instead of a disadvantage.

"Mom, Suicune has an idea on what I could try instead," Sally said as the Charmeleon entered the office space, followed by Suicune and William both in human shapes. "She thinks that somebody might be able to make my hoodies change me into what they are."

Alexa turned to look with confusion at Suicune for that idea. She wasn't quite sure how she could help with that concept, even if it might involve a change in type somehow, as that sounded more like a magic thing. Alexa knew she didn't have the experience to safely pull off something like that yet. William should have known that too, so that he didn't stop this already was a bit of a surprise.

"As a group effort. I may not normally do that sort of thing, but as an experienced Legendary I should be able to help you manage," Suicune answered the look. Alexa could read between the lines that this was some sort of teaching moment for Legendaries. "Although we should wait until your whole team is available."

"Alright, if Sally is willing to risk some of her outfits and everyone thinks it is safe for her to try, then I'm willing to at least try it," Alexa allowed thoughtfully. "We do have some time before the League itself for that."

"Clair, we have a situation," a local cut in with some worry, looked at Alexa, and then sighed with relief that made her uneasy. "Actually having Alexa Larch here might help. Dan Delibird just showed up with a pile of missing artifacts and a big problem."

The big problem turned out to be a very human and very angry Dan with Storm the Gatpotear looking rather angry as well. Behind them was a small collection of worried Ice types that were carrying a large and well secured box that felt like far too many transformation things piled together carelessly. "Leader Clair of the Dragon Clan," he started bluntly. "This is the last straw. Stop bringing your trinkets and devices that change pokemon into our caverns. You are lucky I was the first to touch the latest disaster we've found instead of someone less able to handle being human."

"How long does it last," Storm demanded icily, and Alexa wasn't the only one to flinch at the cold air that radiated off the cat pokemon. However, the meaning behind that entire conversation sunk in, and Alexa found herself feeling less and less happy with the idea that something that likely didn't reverse easily had affected Dan as nobody answered Storm. "It does wear off, right? You didn't lose something in our home that can permanently change someone, right?"

"We must apologize for this," Clair said carefully, although the Gym Leader was looking at Alexa instead of the icy cat. That was the hint that made Alexa realize she was sparking a bit more than she had thought. "We thought that the person who lost that particular item had done so in the Dragon's Den. It is actually a critically important item that should never have been anywhere near your caves."

"It really shouldn't have. Do you have anyone who wanted to be human about twenty years ago?" Terence questioned unhappily. "My father should have taken such a situation to the Clan as a whole, likely brought the pokemon here to have it done, but that is the only reason I can think of why he would have it there."

"Twenty years ago we had a Rocket infestation," Dan said darkly but also thoughtfully, and everyone froze at the reminder of those criminals. Sally in particular ended up hiding behind her mother at the idea. "If that is when that was lost, then I think it is safe to assume your father didn't have the best intentions there."

"I'm not sure I'd go that far immediately," Terence rumbled unhappily. "There are other possibilities."

"Well, since apparently it doesn't wear off, can you at least reverse it?" Storm cut in harshly. "Or is that another thing you can't do right?"

"Storm, if they lost it to Team Rocket I can't complain about them being lucky enough for me to find it again," Dan said to his daughter. "I'm guessing that it isn't as easy as using the pokemon counterpart you hopefully still have?"

"Not unless you are willing to become a Dragon type," Terence specified. "Legendary Larch, would this count as a type change you can reverse?"

"Dan is still the same types as before," Alexa had to answer that from what she could see. "The best I can do is probably make you a Gatpotear until you can find a better way to get fully back to normal." Everyone seemed confused by that for some reason, although William seemed to get it first. "You are human right now, and that is enough to make you a Gatpotear, even if I might have to force that one specifically."

"Wait, does that mean that whatever Dragon you are is an option for me too?" Sally then asked eagerly. "Because you are a neat Dragon right now."

"That should work for the time being," Dan admitted after a moment of thought with a glance at the hoodie wearing Charmeleon, and of Suicune clearly wanting to point out the pendant option. "But I do want to go back to my original species at some point. I know there is always going to Leader Gardevoir, but I'd rather have backup for that."

Final Gym completed, and a minor storyline mostly tied together nicely. Sally-mander has a bit more to go, but I am happy with how things tied together here.

That is an option there, but I do sort of want to develop a machine-pokemon change too. I think there have been a couple suggestions in the thread, but it just never really fit into the story proper.
Got stuck thinking about that, and it caused me to make a robotic transformation item.

Modular Widget- a body part belonging to one of the steel-type lines that evolve by fusing with each other such as the Beldum, Magnemite, and Klink lines. The transformation items are created by several cultures of their respective species that use their mechanical nature to undergo ritualistic transplants using the body parts of their ancestors. After undergoing repeated transplants, body parts will become sufficiently infused with Steel type energy and mystically aligned with fusing with somebody to act as a type-changing item for other species.

Contact with the item almost always causes the transformee to gain a steel type and a robotic form similar to the donor Pokémon line, with the item visibly integrated with the Pokémon's body. Removal of the item causes reversion, similar to the Frozen Flame. If one of the Pokémon's types matches the donor lines' non-Steel type, that type will be preserved in almost all known cases.

For an unknown reason, certain species of Pokémon instead transform into a consistent form regardless of the line the item originated from, and frequently gain a type instead of Steel despite their robotic appearance.
