The way I interpreted that was giving her father limited mind control powers, not herself, she didn't seem to demonstrate any herself. Though I see where you're going with this.

Hmm this is an interesting analysis. I do like it, but I'm loathe to add that layer of complexity to the system. I've been thinking of them as more close enough to be interchangeable with a certain degree of training.

My system's gradually grown in complexity but I dig in my heels at every attempt because otherwise by now it would be completely untenable :p
Incidentally I've been wondering if it bothers people how meta I sometimes am in talking about it. Some QMs bury the details of their system completely for the sake of immersion, while I think I'm probably a bit too open about them. Is that a problem you think?

Curse your diabolical plan being successful!

I don't mind the complexity at all. Makes for a fun quest.

Yeah... I know that it makes things more complex, which is why I didn't really make a point of it earlier, but it really is the way things are. Might not be too bad to add this complexity, as off the top of my head it's really only illusions that are so diverse.

Ok, as long as at least a fair number of them are, that alleviates one potential issue. Even if not all of them go to school, as long as enough leave for school each day for their general activity to be considered 'ordinary', we should be fine on that front.
So school was one of the issues I originally was very conflicted on and consulted with a couple people about before I started the quest.

It's such a huge time sink that if you were allowed to just drop it for extra megucamonths there'd be no reasonable way to entice you to do it without making the benefits or penalties associated with it outrageous. It was a rather intractable issue I wasn't sure what to do with.

Ultimately I decided on an abstraction for the sake of running the quest at all.

Megucamonths essentially are the time each girl is giving you out of their life on average. Just like you can have a job and school as well. They go to school in time other than what you're using. Essentially Mami deciding in character that they all needed to go to school, and thus the players didn't get the option to veto it. Given Mami herself continued to go to school, as did quite a few other magical girls it makes at least some sense. It's mostly just a cop out on my part because after many attempts I decided balancing the option of whether to go to school or not would be near impossible without obviously ham fisted antics that would be arguably worse.

Hahaha. It's pointless. If you want support from the heavens get a helicopter.
Getting a working space program, magically or normally, is a lot of effort.
Spacecraft would spend very little time over Japan, so unless you want hour long gaps of coverage you'll need multiple craft.
Hiding it would require it to make minimal signal emissions, be invisible to both light and radar, and probably several other things.
It would still need to be able to send and receive commands from the ground
We would need a giant dish and computer system to track and give it commands
Arming it would get both the US and Russia on our *** and they would have no reason to not do something.
Orbital fire support into modern Japan would be extremely obvious. And also get us labeled as terrorists most likely.
Surveillance and Orbital support. That's it. If you really want either, get a plane or a helicopter. **** a hot air balloon would work. Hiding one of those is much cheaper and practical and doesn't make us an international threat.

Does that mean that if we keep the girls alive long enough they graduate we can double their manpower?
It's essentially a limitation on my abstractions. I can't make things perfectly mirror the situation and remain at all balanced.

The way I figure is essentially Mami is providing them a life where being a magical girl is a full time job, but not their entire life. Which I believe was noted in the first post that previously for these girls it consumed their entire lives. If that makes sense. The way I see it, you could press them to be magical girls more of their time and less time being just girls, but at a heavy morale cost.

You're essentially getting 40 hours a week from each of your girls. (Mami is putting in far more, which is why she can be involved in other things besides her main time expenditure for the month). You could increase that for a heavy morale cost I guess, if I'm being fair about it. Other groups may work their girls substantially harder and have a higher turnover rate. But as many companies and governments have discovered, working your people longer doesn't strictly translate to proportional increases in output anyways.

It sadly comes down a lot to game balance and making school feasible, but it was a decision I made early on because I spent several days thinking about it and not writing the quest and decided at the time that a quest with some relatively minor issues was superior to no quest.

It was mostly just a thought experiment, though I think it was intended more for economic purposes than military. A Clairvoyant is similar to an invisible surveillance drone as it is.

Revised Plan

@inverted_helix I want a magical version of the group sports day, so I doubled the cost to represent the extra time you say it would take to go somewhere secluded. Does my description sound alright to you? Are there any additional costs you want to levy?

[X] Upkeep: 12 Veteran, 7 Green, 1 Associate, -$12,800

Hunting Plan:
Cost 2.5 Elites, 12.5 Vets, 1 Greens, Expected Harvest of 70.7 cubes, -1 for Demon Forecasting, 0% chance of injury, North territory at +8 Demon Strength, South at =< 0 Demon Strength, Rural at =< 0 Demon Strength.

[X] Split territory into North (28 sustainable harvest) and South (27 sustainable harvest). North is at -1.3 Demon Strength. South is at +1 Demon Strength.

[X] Demon Forecasting, cost 1 cube, benefit 1.1 times harvest.

[X] South (27 Sustainable harvest), Expected Harvest 40.9, Cap Harvest at 41.3, Expected Demon Strength afterwards = +8 Demon Strength
-[X] Use Rotating Tactics = +5% chance of injury, Demon strength increase by 66% instead of 100%
-[X] Hunting Pairs (South): Magical Girls will hunt in pairs reducing the danger, but because they are not covering as much area their efficiency is reduced. Death is less likely.
Cost: Variable, specify number of Meguca dedicated; Reward 1.6 Grief Cubes per Meguca assigned; 16% base casualty chance
--[X] 7 Vets w/ full sets of vests and clothing. Expected Harvest = 27.7, Danger = 16% -15% -5% +5% +4.5 -6% = -0.5% chance of injury.
-[X] Dispersed Hunting (North): Magical Girl will individually hunt demons throughout your territory and gather the grief cubes for the central supply. This can be dangerous.
Cost: Variable, specify number of Meguca dedicated; Reward: 2 grief cubes per Meguca assigned. 20% base casualty (significant injury or death) chance.
--[X] 2 Elite w/ Kevlar clothing. Expected Harvest = 13.2, Danger = 20% -11% -15% +5 +4.5 -4% = -0.5% chance of injury.

[X] North (28 Sustainable Harvest). Expected Harvest 27.4, Expected Demon Strength afterwards =< -1.3 Demon Strength
--[X] 2 Vets and 0.5 Green (with Kevlar Vest). Expected Harvest = 8.3, Danger = 16% -15% -5% -1.3% = -5.3% chance of injury for Vets. +5% -2% for Green = -2.3% for Green.
-[X] Dispersed Hunting (South): Magical Girl will individually hunt demons throughout your territory and gather the grief cubes for the central supply. This can be dangerous.
Cost: Variable, specify number of Meguca dedicated; Reward: 2 grief cubes per Meguca assigned. 20% base casualty (significant injury or death) chance.
--[X] 3 Vets w/ full sets of vests and clothing. Expected Harvest = 14.9, Danger = 20% -11% -5% -1.3% -6% = -2.3% chance of injury
--[X] 0.5 Elite. Expected Harvest = 3.3. Danger = 20% -11% -15% +-1.3% = -7.3% chance of injury.

[X] Rural (2 Sustainable Harvest). Expected Harvest 1.9, Expected Demon Strength afterwards =< +0 Demon Strength
-[X] Hunting Pairs: Magical Girls will hunt in pairs reducing the danger, but because they are not covering as much area their efficiency is reduced. Death is less likely.
Cost: Variable, specify number of Meguca dedicated; Reward 1.6 Grief Cubes per Meguca assigned; 16% base casualty chance
--[X] Rural: Base modified to 1.2, dispatch bonus does not apply.
--[X] 0.5 Vet, 0.5 Green (Green has Kevlar Vest) = 1.908 Expected Harvest (cap at 2). Danger = 16% - 15% -5% = -4% chance of injury for Vet, -1% chance of injury for Green (+5% for not vet, -2% for Kevlar Vest).

[X] Change distribution of the grief cube stockpile. (Currently 1/2 at Mami's apartment, 1/3 at the house, and 1/6 in Itawa.) Stealthily (stealth girl) move 1/4 from Mami's apartment into two of the other apartments with long time veterans. (New distribution: 1/4 at Mami's apartment, 1/3 at the house, 1/8 at Apartment A in Mitakihara, 1/8 at Apartment B in Mitakihara, and 1/6 in Itawa.)

Anti-Poaching: 0.5 Elites

[X] Anti-Poaching Patrol: 0.5 Taya

Training and Research: 1 Elite, 4 Vets, 0.5 Green, -3 Grief Cubes

[X] Rising Stars: In the time SIMP has been in existence you've noticed that you have a couple girls that stand out from the rest. With some personal training to hone their skills and push them to their limits and beyond they might be able to make it to Elite status. This can be run for up to two candidates at a time.
-[X] Mami, Kaoru and 1 grief cube

-[X] 0.5 Vets. Mami thinks it would be a good thing to incorporate crowd control into Kaoru's Elite training. One of Kaoru's strengths is crowd control, but she only has experience using it on Demons. She really needs experience to see if she can use it against magical girls as well. Perhaps a modified game of "King of the Mountain" would help simulate this. Mami arranges to have half the veterans join for training one day. Mami was starting to explain the rules of the game, when Kyouko interrupted her and declared that the name of the game was "Get Kaoru!" and that the goal was to knock Kaoru unconscious. Girl who succeeds to get a date with Mami (cakes, tea, and movie night). Mami had told Kaoru about the King of the Mountain plan before hand, but this wasn't what she expected. Kaoru shot Mami a mortified and betrayed look before sprinting away with all the rest of the girls hot on her heels.

[X] Enchanting, Duration: Your budding researchers picked up a sort of effect similar to layered insulation holding in heat longer. They would like more resources to investigate this. They might be able to make enchantments last longer after a magical girl lets go of them this way, though they don't have much immediate idea as to the usefulness of that.
Cost:2 months of: 2 Veteran Meguca, 2 Grief Cube, $1000; Reward: Step towards long term enchantments.

[X] 0.5 Vets, 0.5 Green. Mami realizes that it would be useful to have better documentation of standard Serene practices to help integrate new girls better. Mami has three new greens, who better then the new girls to see what is different that the vets think is obvious? Of course, it would also help to have a vet spend some time on the project too. Some items Mami wants covered:

-[X] Hunting Tactics: Broken down by Pack, Pair, and Solo. Including good power set combinations and safety tips. The use of a dispatch team and cellphones.
-[X] Standard Equipment: Shields, cellphones, Kevlar, bicycles
-[X] Standard Training Curriculum: Demon Finding, Pack Tactics, Defending Others Training, etc
-[X] Demon Strength: How they respond to over hunting, Rotating Tactics as a way t slow growing demon strength
-[X] Grief Spirals and how to handle them
-[X] Money Management: Good jobs for magical girls. How to budget. How to obtain housing (use of illusions). Recommendations for green girls to work while veterans hunt

Investigations and Espionage: 2 Vets, -15 grief cubes (-5 this month)

[X] Handling the Police
-[X] Mariko and Taura are assigned to send some of their time this month figuring out what the police want and are suspecting. 1 vet (they don't spend all their time on it this month). Mariko provides the stealth, Taura the mind reading. Mami will incorporate any information they give into how she handles the police. Especially important is how much the police already know. Do they know that they actually have the Kevlar? Or do they just know that the Kevlar was ordered and delivered here? Maybe Mami can arrange for it to look like the Yakuza or someone was using them as a drop off site for the Kevlar instead of them purchasing it themselves?

-[X] Mami decides she better discuss the problem with Kyubey. He's been acting upset because of all the attention, but hasn't actually said anything to her. For a creature that always claims to be logical it's surprising how he expects you to know what he is thinking without telling you anything. Mami clicks her tongue, "tch-" so like a boy to expect you to read his mind. Well, she'll aks his advice on concealment. It's not like she wants the attention either. Kyubey must have some experience concealing things like the fights between Minako and Akane before. While she's talking with Kyubey Mami might as well find out what else he's upset about.

[X] Damage Control
-[X] Kevlar
--[X] Request Kyuubey do a mindwipe to remove evidence of the kevlar purchases.
--[X] Cost: 15 grief cubes [pay 5 this month]
-[X] Contractor
--[X] Stage 1:
---[X] Stealth in to the contracting office and collect login information for accounting and personnel.
---[X] Infiltrate the office that night.
---[X] Modify the cost estimate, the billing invoice, and the paid amount to remove one decimal place, putting it at $1000.
---[X] Modify the work order so that there's an error that leaves it at $10k, but that correctly adding everything up would total $1000.
---[X] Swap the check number information with a different one of an appropriate amount.
---[X] Take specific note of the person who signed off on the damage report, and their personal info (address, phone number, etc).
---[X] Determine when he next has a day off.
--[X] Stage 2:
---[X] Locate the crew worker who signed off on the damage report.
---[X] Verify that said person's living conditions, and that they drink alcohol.
---[X] Stealth/illusion attack. Mask varieties of alcohol in the premises as normal drinks (both sight and taste).
---[X] Ensure the individual drinks a fair bit over the course of the day.
---[X] Add occasional 'hallucinations' of property damage (walls, couches, bookcases, whatever) that tend to shortly fade out.
--[X] Stage 3:
---[X] Have someone in pseudo-stealth (the "she works here but isn't interesting" type) drop a printout of the work order, the invoice, and the police report off in the office of the head of accounting, telling her that the invoice was flagged as having an error.
---[X] Do this at a time coincidental with the above crew worker being well and truly drunk.
---[X] When she calls him up over the details, expect that his rantings dissuade the accountant from trying to get detailed confirmation about his submitted report.
---[X] At this point the damage report itself is suspect, which means that when she calls to inform the police of the monetary error and they ask her about the damage report that went with it, she can uncomfortably say that that may not have been from the most reliable witness.
--[X] Cost: 1.0 vet (Taura, stealth, and perhaps a bit of teleporter support)

Diplomacy: 2.5 Vets, 0.5 Greens, -3 Grief Cubes

[X] Open Relations with Area 9, Cost 1 Vet

[X] Community Relations: 0.5 Green. Send a green around to deliver cakes and other baked goods to the neighbors (of the main house) as a way to get to know them better and try to make them more friendly. Report back on who the neighbors are and who is friendly and who we need to work on better relations with.

[X] Rural Recruitment (Area 3, 4, 5), Cost 1 Vet per an area
-[X] Bribe Kyubey to help you find the girls (-1 cube per an area, reduces Vet cost by 50%)
-[X] Sub-Total Cost: 1.5 Vets, -3 Cubes

Morale: 1 Veterans

[X] Sports Day (Magic Use Prohibited): You'll take the time to organize a full group outing to have some fun and play some games
Cost: 1 Veteran Meguca, Reward: Increase to morale (group cohesion)
-[X] -$100 (for foam). Arrange some magical girl LARP to throw the police off the trail. Create foam "weapons" equivalent to the weapons the girls usually use and have a mock battle. Organize the girls into squads with squad leaders. Might as well get some semi-combat training out of all of this.

Fluff:

[X] Mami makes sure to talk to Kyouko and see how she's doing. Stuffing her full of a good breakfast is a good way to get her to let down her guard and talk to her. Mami can't stop herself from giving Kyouko a hug, she is so happy to have her back. She thanks Kyouko for the training she gave the Taya and Kaoru.
-[X] Speaking of that, Mami ought to give Taya some praise and acknowledgement. Maybe at the team meeting? She also better encourage Kaoru to keep working hard. Mami will be taking over her training this month, so she ought to get her primed for a strong push.

[X] Mami decides to make sure and let the Serene's all know about the reduced Demon Strength. Might need to have a full team meeting. With charts! She also wants to explain to them the plan for dividing the territory in two and oscillating over hunting with under hunting.

[X] Mami gets ready for an unpleasant discussion with Taura. Mami knows how much Taura hates using her powers, but really she's one of the most useful power sets on the team and Mami needs every edge. Right now she's got the police asking questions and Mami doesn't know enough. Surely Taura will understand that they need to know what the police are thinking so that they can convince them that there is nothing shady going on. I mean, it's even true! The Serene's have never participated in criminal activities! They just can't tell the police the truth that they need Kevlar to protect against demons. Mami needs to know what they suspect and are planning so as to best prepare a response that will keep them out of trouble.

-[X] Mami doesn't have anything else planned for Taura this month. But Mami knows there is going to be an intense need to know what the surrounding groups are thinking, and they often refuse to talk to us. Take the girls to the south of Mitakihara. Ahuge unknown despite trying to talk to them peaceably twice. They might even be behind the poachers that were hunting in our territory. Even if they aren't it's important to know the neighbors. How many magical girls end up fighting each other needlessly because they wouldn't even trust each other to talk instead? It's not like you want to hurt other girls, the Serene territory is stable and safe. You just want to make sure we aren't going to get attacked, and maybe have some insight on how to persuade them to be friendly instead of hostile.

-[X] During her meeting with Taura, Mami can't help but have stray thoughts during the talk. Would Taura be interested in a career counseling magical girls? There is no denying the girls could use someone, and a mind reader would know best how to help them. Although the girls might not like it. Or maybe they'd start treating Taura more as a doctor like person instead of someone scary? Would Taura need to go to college to study for this? Can the Serene's afford it? Ah... she might not even want to. There are just so many things that a mind reader can do to help. Like policing. Mami is dreading the day when it happens, but at some point there will need to be formal rules and order keeping. Mami can't keep them all as little girls forever. Truthfully they've been lucky that they've had so few conflicts for so long. But how do you make sure to judge justly? A mind reader would know the truth of what happened. Ah... but then Taura would be even more ostracized from the rest of the girls! Poor Taura. She tries so hard, and she's really such a good girl. Taura's such a good girl. She's always worrying about how to use her powers ethically. I'm so lucky! A mind reader could do so much damage and harm if she wanted too. But Taura is always trying to do the right thing instead of the easy thing. I'm so lucky I got a mind reader to join my group. An honest and loyal one that really wants to do what's right. She always so lonely, I know what that's like. Arrhgh! I want to give her a hug. She deserves one... wait a minute, she's trying to run- No! Tie her up in ribbons! Taura is getting a hug today no matter what! Even if I have to tie her up first!

-[X] Now that Mami knows what is going on with the police, she decides she has to let the rest of the Serenes know. The house is bugged, so Mami arranges for the team to stealthily gather at the old junkyard she occasionally uses as a training site. (She also tells Kyubey he better make himself scare for a while as the girls are likely to be mad at him). She tells them that thanks to Taura, they now know why the police are watching them. There are several things. First is the order of Kevlar, which Mami apologizes for her lack of judgement in not concealing the purchase. Second, is the report of a fight that caused large amounts of damage. Third, and here Mami is careful to keep her face straight, and not look at Kaoru and Taura, there are some strange rumors about a Yakuza princess. Finally, because of all of these things, the police have bugged the house, and have heard them talking about hunting and magic.

--[X] Mami raises her hands to calm the rising upset bauble. She points out that any one of these things probably would have been overlooked, but they had the misfortune for them all to occur in rapid succession. She warns them that they are not going to like the next part, but that she needs them to stay calm and listen to the end to here the solution she has come up with. She then tells them that Kyubey is very upset about the damage to the masquerade - and is demanding 30 grief cubes to take care of the situation.

--[X] Prepared for the explosion to come from that announcement, Mami rapidly restores order. (She isn't sure if the shouts from Kyouko demanding quiet helped or not). Mami tells the girls that she has negotiated with Kyubey for two concessions. First, Taura will be taking on an assignment to cleanup some of the evidence themselves, and in exchange Kyubey has reduced his demand to 15 grief cubes. The rest of the team will also have to create a cover story for the hunting terminology that the police overheard. They will do this by having a mock battle in full magical costume, but without using their powers, hoping to convince the police that they are just cosplay games that they were referring to. Second, Mami has persuaded Kyubey to accept 3 monthly payments. With the increased harvest from the rotating crops there will be no shortage of grief cubes, and the stockpile should continue to grow.

-[X] Mami finishes by asking that they all avoid assigning blame, and just take this as a lesson in how they need to preserve the masquerade going forward. She asks if there are any questions and answers them as best she can.

Totals:
Manpower: 4 Elites, 34 Vets, 9 Greens, 1 Associate
Grief Cubes: 43 (stockpile) + 70.7 (Harvest) - 47 (Upkeep) -1 (Elite Training) -1 (Demon Forecasting), -2 (Research) -5 (First Kyubey installment) -3 (Kyubey Bribe for Rural Recruitment) = 54.7 before grief spirals.
Money: -$12,800 -$153.5 (interest) -$100 (foam weapons) -$1,000 (research) +$17,900 = $3,546.5 (applied against debt)

Couldn't fit it in this month, but I'm thinking we might do this next month. Then we could hand out some copies as part of diplomacy, and maybe put it somewhere on the internet.

I cannot support a magic sports day while we are under investigation.

We're going somewhere secluded, we will have all our stealth and teleporters available. I'm pretty sure we can get out of town and away from surveillance. If anything I think this is important to do precisely because we are under surveillance. We need to go some place safe for our girls to blow off steam instead of having to always worry about being watched.

Better to give that energy an outlet that doesn't involve a cat fight with magic weapons while the police are watching.

Hmm.

I want to do a bunch of research, both the stat enhancements and the enchantment stuff. Stat enhancement is going to take a long time, so the sooner it's started the better. On the other hand, the enchantment stuff can all be completed in just a couple turns.

The enchantment suite of research is 7 vets + 1 green. Each stat researched is 3 vets + 1 green.

I agree with Haman that, of the three stats, speed is probably the best one to start with. It has decent applications for offense, defense, and scouting.

Of note, next turn we're going to lose 3 to 3.5 vets to the hunting transition, so there's less overhead for other activity. I'm inclined to do the one-turn enchantment research (3 vets, 1 green) to get it out of the way, while leaving ~6 vets for other stuff on both turns. Will see what other adjustments I want to make later.

[Note: I made some sort of stupid addition error in the summary on the previous page. Fixed it.]

On the idea of using the fencing cover for the kevlar: I'd suggest that rather than the hidden magic sports day, do the usual public sports day, and specifically set it up so that fencing matches are a part of it. Actual visible use of such cover is much more convincing than just another purchase (particularly if that purchase is hidden).

Omake: Gossip
Gossip

After fighting demons for years now, school was actually something Aiko liked. It was a blessed period of normalcy, where instead of thinking about combat she could think about books and clothing and friends, and of course, gossip.

"You will not believe the latest." She told the other five girls flatly. She wasn't sure she believed it herself.

"Spill." Demanded Yui.

"Miki Sayaka and Sakura Kyoko." Aiko spilled.

"You're right, I don't believe it." Sanae said.

"I donno, have you seen how intently they look at each other? There's something there." Junko chimed in.

"Yeah, loathing." Sanae shot back.

"I have noticed that Sayaka-san is spending a lot of time in the same arcades that Kyoko-san frequents." Tomo noted.

Rei shook her head, "Plenty of reasons for that that don't involve romance."

"Like?" Aiko asked.

"Competition. Sayaka is an arch-idealist, and Kyoko is the pragmatist's pragmatist. She's probably trying to beat the bitch's high scores to prove a point." Rei explained.

"Like that would ever happen." Junko dismissed.

"Sure, but Sayaka's stubborn enough to try." Yui said.

There was a general muttering of agreement.

"I think they'd be cute together." Tomo chimed in after a moment.

"Romantic relationships cannot be founded on mutual hatred Tomo." Rei said flatly.

"Besides," Yui said, "Sayaka's straight. She likes that violin guy."

From there conversation drifted from topic to topic until the lunch period ended.

OOC: I ship Red and Blue. Oh, and hey, I made an omake that isn't wildly in contradiction to the story Helix is telling.

Lesson Number One

The other was Kaoru, a girl Mami's age, but not close to being as mature. If Mami were a teacher, Kaoru would be the class president. There was a gap there, both in charisma and experience. She was struck in Mami's mold though: they were... similar people. Talented, caring, and ultimately hopeful. Vastly different magic, but similar, all the same. Kyouko wasn't sure if she was ready though, not yet. To go past mere competence, a magical girl had to face true despair, then discover that you could work yourself past it.

-----------------------

Edit: @Elder Haman what does Kaoru look like? I know her costume is an old fashioned Sailor Moon-ish type deal, but do you have a description for the rest of her?

And yes, this omake is for future Kaoru elite training attempts even if it's mostly focused on Kyouko's feelings. :V

Taya's appearance resembles Yu Kashima from Monthly Girl's Nozaki-Kun

Ahh... I love Nozaki-kun. Fun show. I really like how you depicted Kaoru as the "class president type" too. Kaoru probably thought she was that, up until the events that made her a magical girl. She doesn't think that anymore, but I could see her still giving off that aura to other girls.

Well I looked long and hard for a picture that looked like my image of Kaoru. I couldn't really find one. Although I finely decided that this one (of the perfect class president) came close to what Kaoru looked like before becoming a magical girl. But the first thing Kaoru did after becoming a magical girl was get a haircut, and unlike a lot of magical girls Kaoru had a sudden growth spurt (she always imagined herself taller and older then she really was) so now she looks a bit more like this (minus the fancy dress).

Not perfectly satisfied with them, but the last one is pretty close to what I imagine Kaoru looks like now.

While search for a picture for Kaoru, I also found one that's pretty good for Mariko.

This is Mariko in her causal every day wear. Then consider that her magical girl outfit tends to outdo even the frilliest of the dresses on this artists page. (Some individual samples).

I also ran into what in my mind is the perfect - spot on - representation of Taura the "Ice Queen."

I was actually so impressed with the art and character design that I decided to go check out the actual manga, only to discover that's it's ah.... definitely not safe for work... Figured I should warn others. Links above are completely safe though.

I was pondering putting a full Mami back on Kaoru's training, which left me with half a Kyouko to play with. Since I'd pulled the half Mami from the counseling, I couldn't help thinking about putting Kyouko in that spot. And the parade of horror that that would be. And the time Sayaka went in there to see her, followed by a half hour of yelling, and a half hour of very eerie quiet. And Tomo and her friends huddling around the corner wondering whether Tomo was right, or if they were the ones that would have to go in and clean up the bloodbath...

I agree we should do research, we just need to pick them and slowly complete them all. I'd be willing to switch to the Personal Enchantment effects first if people prefer that.

I guess we could even probably do both the other Enchantment research starting next turn (takes 2 months), and then start of the stat research.

Fencing at the group sports day is a decent idea, although I really wanted the magical part so as to help out with Kaoru's training. She's a crowd control specialist, but that's difficult to train without a crowd.

Maybe if Taura gives us some useful information about the police and what they are thinking we can do another sports day with fencing. If we still think that will help. I was thinking that this turn the girls would go out on the lawn for the house and practice some fencing as a way to give the police something they can see that can make sense to them.

I hate to spend a sports day on it and pass up helping Kaoru's training when frankly the fencing idea is a bit of a shot in the dark.

Also, all that bit with bribing kyuubey to set up another account in order to buy the fencing stuff? That should be completely unnecessary. Just go to a local sporting supplies store. Even if they don't have it on hand, they can always order it. Pay in cash, pretty much untraceable.

Hah. We put in an order, they'll be able to trace it to us. Depends on how much manpower they're dedicating to it, but if they're willing to invest in a van (at least 2 people probably) sitting there for almost a month, they can easily afford to look up what we're buying.
Not to mention that fencing doesn't really use the same equipment as the bulletproof vests/clothes that we got. Similar, but different enough that it'll look a hell of a lot more like we're trying to cover something up. And if they think we're trying to cover something up, they're just going to investigate all the harder. Because they're going to ask the obvious question: why weren't we doing it before? We paid almost $20,000 for the equipment, they're not going to just accept that it was for fencing. And that still leaves the question of how our house got horribly damaged.

As for the secret magic day: a bunch of people you have under surveillance are all leaving for the woods. What do you do? Alternatively: A bunch of people you have under surveillance for suspicious activity mysteriously disappear for a day. What do you do?

Seriously, selling enchanted kevlar armor is probably our best option. Show them that it's better, tell them we want to keep the process a secret for obvious reasons. It'll get them off our back and we'll probably have a nice additional income source. This requires us getting the enchantment research things, but that's probably worthwhile.
Oh yeah, and the average turn to complete the long-term researches is turn 5.3 Just thought you might want to know.

Hahaha. It's pointless. If you want support from the heavens get a helicopter.
Impractical? Yes. Pointless? Hell no.
1) Distance provides protection of its own. If you're in a helicopter, other MGs can shoot you down. Very few to no MGs have the capabilities to reach beyond the atmosphere.
2) Economics. People are currently paying ~2k/lb to get something into orbit. If we can transfer a 50-pound package into orbit at the cost of, say, 8 cubes, we're making $100,000 instead of roughly $10,000 that we would've gotten from our current jobs/businesses and paying for the girls' upkeeps.
3) Propaganda / morale. This should be pretty obvious.
Right now and in the near future it's not practical. But in the future? It could very well be.

Other idea as an alternative to the Magic Sports Day: Just add a 0.5 vet unit to the elite training, and mark it as bringing in groups of vets for Kaoru to practice on periodically.

Mami doesn't have to be the one to make the purchase. Unless they're following around every single girl in the organization, it's very unlikely that they'd know of it. And if you make a special order, you just have to leave a name, and check back with them periodically. And that's only if no one has the stuff in stock.

This, I will grant. That's the main reason I thought it was a strange idea to start with, but with everyone else jumping on it I figured I'd go along.

Plus, I don't have any other good ideas yet, what with Kyouko not having the mental control abilities.

Was thinking of tossing this in for a preliminary diplomacy trial:

[] Purchase: One additional phone line dedicated to SIMP business.
-[] $??

[] Purchase: Business cards for the Serene Imperium
-[] $??

[] Open Formal Relations: Set places for safe contact, methods (phone numbers, email) for setting up a meeting, etc.
-[] Combined with door-to-door methodology.
-[] Safe Passage agreement is on offer if they want it.
-[] Areas 3, 4, 5 (3 areas, 10 days for each area)
-[] 1 vet + 1 green?

Targeting the rural areas for the usual reasons of them being most likely to agree (particularly with safe passage into an urban area for times when they want to head into the city), whereas we've angered most other group areas around us.

Incidentally it occurs to me that early on Kaoru's special thing was being really fast at the start of the quest, and then later at Haman's omakes it became more of a CC focused thing, or maybe music. Some sort of continuity issue I've got there. Especially when you stack the "magic music" on top of it. Which annoys me as I came up with a really cool magic type for someone that is both fast herself and able to CC others...

I've lost track of Kaoru's history. I figured music was just her highlight effect, like with Sayaka (but maybe more idol focused instead of classical), not her actual power.

Distance is what makes it impractical. Have you ever tried shooting (let's be generous beyond belief) a five foot target 200 miles away while flying at 17k+ MPH? Oh and to do that you'd have to have an extremely good way to measure your target location and get it to the satellite. It's completely impractical against moving targets and stationary ones can be taken by surprise. Or with earth based artillery. In any case, you can't arm it with anything other than a laser. Bullets and missiles will both burn up in the atmosphere and even if they were invisible, the heat they generate would make it look like a shooting star. Lasers cannot correct their course like a missile could, and the earth's atmosphere and the distance involved makes me highly suspicious it wouldn't even be effective.
Also, if you think Kyubey would let us break the masquerade for something like this, your wrong.

This makes me wonder about the magical girls in war torn parts of the world who wish for magical powers to take revenge on those who rolled into their village and killed their families and friends. Kyuubey gave her magical powers, and I very much doubt she's going to be shy about going magical rambo on their asses.

Like, is there low level magical warfare against the cartels in mexico? What about all those civil wars in Africa?

Really? I don't recall Kaoru being called out for anything other then being a green who kept on over preforming in the early pack hunting. (I think you said she was consitently rolling above a 90 on her 1d100). Hence she appeared to be really "strong" compared to the other girls.

My omakes I think centered her on "music" and "sound" as her wish magic, which then I gave the flavor of providing an crowd control effect as a way of explaining how she helped gives us an extra harvest when pack hunting. Interestingly, although I didn't know anything about her being fast, I also had Sayaka teach her those musical platforms that Sayaka has, one of which has the effect of giving a speed boost.

What was the magic type you came up with?

Oh wait, you're right, I was conflating it together with your really good courier Akeno for some reason (who has sadly vanished into obscurity) Guess that magic type will go unused for a while. Maybe I'll put it on my table of random wish magic.

At least no continuity error though!

This tends to be resolved more with quiet assassination than showy blazes of glory. Also Incubators are willing to cover up quite a bit in the commission of the initial goals of the Wish.
