These two are already in the 48 cube assumed expenditure. We only need +1 seed, and I did rounding down to whole numbers in my calcuation, so I think the first significant digit covers it.
34 vets + 9 greens + 3 elites = 46 + 1 kyouko + 1 demon forecasting = 48. OK. I was miscounting something in my head, then.

For a smaller increase, we could target +10 RT instead. That would gain us another couple cubes. Only requirement is another 4 kevlar vests, or 4 leather outfits, for the ones on the underhunt side. That would be the most immediately viable plan.

We'd need another 1.5 hunters to switch to +10 this next turn (doable if we drop all diplomacy actions, though I didn't expect much there anyway), though we'd only need 1 new kevlar vest for defensive purposes. The following turn we'd need +2 kevlar vests and 1 set of clothes (or 3 vests), though we'd be back down to needing 15.5 hunter units.

I'd probably suggest buying 1 vest and 1 set of kevlar clothes per turn til we hit 15 of each, so we'll have the material to handle higher hunt limits.

Just thinking here, but we got an extra +1% from enchanting our shields. Are we enchanting our kevlar?
When I asked about enchanting kevlar a while back, I was told my thoughts on such enchantments were misplaced, and/or that we already did that in order to get the existing damage reduction numbers. So, I dunno.

Looking at the prospects for next turn while we wait for this turn to be updated. 'This turn' when used below refers to the turn after the one we're currently waiting on.

Hunting: 2.5 elite, 12.5 vet, 0.5 green (15.5 total), not counting any new rural territories, and assuming we stay at the +8 RT instead of shifting to +10. That would be 66 cubes harvested if we stay at +8, or 72 if we use the extra 1.5 vets and switch to +10. If we wait til after this turn, we'd only need 0.5 vets (for one turn) to switch from +8 to +10 (need more this turn because we're starting at a negative demon strength). Would likely recommend against going to +10 this turn.

Upkeep: Add an extra vet and 2 greens to cover opening the restaurant, for a total of 13 vets, 9 greens, 1 associate.

Morale: Sports Day, and Community Relations (with (probably) 0.5 Mami for this turn)

The basics cost 3 elite, 26.5 vets, 9.5 greens, leaving 1 elite, 6.5 vets, -0.5 greens (though probably will be covered by at least 1 new green from rural canvassing.

Training: Possibly one more turn of trying to train Kaoru up. That leaves 5.5 vets (and if she did make it, it's still 5.5 vets, but +2 elite).

Research: I expect to go for Speed and Duration (5 vets, 1 green). Duration will be completed this turn, opening up space for Personal Enchantments next turn if we can get a spare vet. Alternatively, Personal+Duration would both be completed this turn if we just want to go for those two.

That leaves 0.5 vets and -1.5 greens. If we get a couple greens from the rural areas this turn, we're ok. If not, something has to be dropped. This also doesn't leave any room for diplomacy, and we really should leave space for work there (eg: 2 vets to open Safe Passage with area 9 to start improving relations).

The only real option we have for freeing up meguca is to stay with just a single research project at a time until we have more people. Don't start Speed until next turn, which frees up 3 vets and a green, which will allow us to continue the diplomacy actions that can hopefully add sufficient population to bring the extra research back in.

Edit: Adjustment notes for the elites if Kaoru passes on the current turn.

With the elite training removed, and if Kaoru makes elite, that gives us a total of 5 elite units to use. If we use 4 of them on hunting, and Mami on various diplomacy efforts, hunting to +8 would require a total of 14.5 units: 4 elites, 10 vets, 0.5 greens. That frees up an effective 2.5 vet units for other actions, which means we'd have sufficient numbers for the two research projects while still being able to go for Safe Passage, and possibly another diplomacy action.

For next turn the main things I want are "fun with magic" to be resumed, the restaurant, and getting some Leather Clothing.

I would prefer to buy more vests and Kevlar clothing as this will allow expanding the number of hunters on the upside as well in case we increase the size of our territory.

I'm open to the other ideas. I'm leaning a little against fun with magic for another turn or two (till we pay of Kyubey) but I could be persuaded otherwise if we have a good grief spiral roll and so have a decent excess stockpile.

For purchases, I'd want to get 1 kevlar vest and 1 set of kevlar clothes per turn (discreetly), til we hit 15 or 16 total sets. From my progress estimates, we can mostly get away with that many even if we start going for higher RTs and such. A few sets of leather clothing would also be handy for random needs, since they're cheap, and useful where you have spare vests (but not spare clothing), and need to hit -4%.

I'd also want to hold off on Fun With Magic until we move to +10 RT.

In which case we can still use some leathers on the downswing. The leathers are useful in their own niche, and are cheaper enough that it's worth to get for that niche.

We wait on confirmation of police success before starting fun with magic. If it does work, then I agree on everything Aranfan said. (assuming we have a reasonably good spiral roll/nothing unexpected comes up)

@Kinematics
I'm not a fan of going for the Speed and Duration researches for the same reason I was against them last turn- get the low-hanging research fruit first, then go for the harder ones that don't need 5.3 turns to finish (on average). Also, we can move to +10 RT next turn, easily. Just buy the leather and we're good (though you'd also need to buy some kevlar to free up the elites)
I could support going for one of them on the basis that we really want the benefits ASAP and will research the others on the side. In that case I'd support going for Speed.

@Elder Haman Unless we switch to a steady-state or other system, there is no reason to waste the extra $350 getting vests when we can get leather. I suppose it's reasonable given the extra 50k in the loan, but it's still wasting money. (And if we do switch to steady-state, the decrease in the number of hunters needed roughly compensates, so we wouldn't need to buy many more)
And buying Kevlar clothes is completely useless, wasting $750 each. Obviously this is only for outfitting hunters on the downswing, buying them as needed so that we can survive the rotating upswing is definitely worthwhile.

I'm suggesting Duration since we already did the first turn of that this turn, so the next turn would be the final research turn for it. If we have space for two research projects, I would be inclined towards Personal+Duration since they'd both be completed the same turn, then go for Speed+Tech the following turn.

Back, sorry, somehow read it as durability. We definitely want the duration research.

Omake: Getting Strong Now
Omake: Kaoru Training II: Getting Strong Now

Kaoru excitedly approaches the junkyard for her daily training with Mami. Yesterday had been much more useful then her previous elite training, and Kaoru is hoping to make even better progress today. Mami is waiting for her with Sayaka, as today they are going to look more at Sayaka's magic. As Kaoru has already adapted some of Sayaka's magic, she's confident she can succeed at today's task.

Mami has her Soul Gem out and is intently observing Sayaka summon circular musical platforms. Sayaka jumps on to one and launches upwards in burst of speed, beyond what even magical girl bodies can do normally. Summoning a second one at more of a 60° angle with ground while still in the air, Sayaka launches herself closer to horizontally this time. Seeing Kaoru approach, Sayaka flips around and summoning a third musical circle Sayaka halts herself, and then drops to the ground next to Mami.

Before Kaoru can speak, Mami greets her, "I've been watching how Sayaka uses her platforms. I'm pretty sure she's storing energy in the music, and then pulling it out to give her the burst of speed or strength." Sayaka scrunches up her face as if that's not quite right, but she doesn't say anything to contradict Mami. Mami continues, "Let's see how you use them."

Kaoru takes a deep breath. Mami doesn't seem to waste any time at these training sessions. Kaoru summons a platform that she leaps on to, followed by a second and a third at steadily increasing intervals. On the third one, Kaoru stops and calls down that at this point she usually pulls out her harp and starts sniping. Kaoru blushes a bit as she sees that Mami is observing her carefully with her Soul Gem - and frowning.

"Hmm..." Mami muses half to herself. "You're not pulling energy out of it." Turning back to Sayaka, Mami instructs her to summon her own musical platforms again. Mami has the two switch off repeatedly as she watches. On the third time that Kaoru is summoning her platform, Mami cocks her head, listening intently for a few seconds. "Kaoru, are you humming?" Embarrassed, Karou explains that she usually hums when doing this as she found that it helps. "Sayaka doesn't hum. Try summoning a platform without humming," Mami instructs her.

Kaoru discovers that she is completely unable to summon a platform without humming. Mami nods, "I think you're using the noise of humming to fill the platforms with energy."

Turning to Sayaka, Mami asks how she fills her platforms with energy. "I don't," Sayaka answers, "the music is just there."

"Hmm," Mami starts making more notes in her notebook. "This might be important." She looks up, "Well now that we know that, lets see if you can do it with some other noise." After talking, they decide on finger snapping. Kaoru is surprised how easy it is for her to summon a platform with a literal snap of her fingers. It takes her a few tries, but now that she knows she needs to be sending magic through the sound of the snap, Kaoru can actually feel it happening. The platforms still don't provide any stat boosts though.

"Well, let's come back to that in a bit," Mami decides. "Now that we know how you summon the platforms, let's see if you can do the blocking thing Sayaka does." Mami summons a rifle, and swings the rifle butt at Sayaka. A circular wheel of music appears blocking Mami's rifle. Mami then has Kaoru try, but without the rifle swinging at her. To Kaoru's surprise she gets it on the first try. Then she wonders why she's surprised, it's basically the exact same thing, but used as a shield instead of a platform to stand on.

After a few more tests against Mami's ribbons, and a swing or two of the rifle butt, Mami decides that they've succeed in adding musical shields to Kaoru's repertoire. Making notes in her notebook, Mami instructs Kaoru to write it down as well as an addition to the list of things to practice. That done, Mami sets the next objective. "Now let's get back to the musical platforms increasing speed and strength."

Mami instructs Sayaka to summon her platforms, but to have Kaoru use them, so that Kaoru can get an idea of what it feels like. Sayaka is surprised by the idea, she's never tried using them with another girl before. They make the attempt, and despite Kaoru getting flung upwards much faster then she expected and pulling her hamstring, it works out. A bit of healing later, and Kaoru tries again. Sayaka is excited by the idea she can try a few combo moves with other girls now, and actually pulls out one of her school notebooks to take some notes herself.

Despite this success, Kaoru still can't get her platforms to give her any kind of boost. Mami keeps having her switch back and forth between Sayaka's platforms and her own. On her fifth try using Sayaka's platforms, Kaoru notices that the platform is playing the same chord each time. Not sure what it means, Kaoru decides to try summoning a musical platform while singing a specific note. It takes a few attempts, but once she succeeds, Kaoru finds herself leaping high into the air. Okay, so it's not as strong and effective as Sayaka's, and Mami says she can sense magical power sloppily leaking from it, but she did it!

After that the next thirty minutes involved Sayaka summoning musical platforms for different effects, speed, strength, and so on. Kaoru would test them out and identify the notes associated with those effects and then replicated the platforms herself. Mami isn't satisfied, and adds them to the list of things Kaoru needs to regularly practice, but Kaoru is ecstatic. She'd always wanted to get her platforms to do the same as Sayaka's and now she has.

Sayaka then shows a new ability she's been working on. She summons what appears to be a... ribbon of music? Sayaka stands on it as it lifts her into the air for the short moment it exists before it fades away. Sayaka sighs, and explains that she hasn't really gotten it to last long yet. Her idea for it came from Mami's ribbons, and how Mami will occasional summon a large ribbon for her to run on when she needs to get some altitude.

Kaoru tries summoning it herself, and after ten attempts gives up with only the slightest hint of a magical ribbon lifting her. Maybe she got two inches off the ground, maybe. Mami suggests trying to just create a small ribbon at first without lifting anything, and both Kaoru and Sayaka manage to do that. Although Kaoru finds she can only get it to last as long as she can sing a note - and she has to keep singing the whole time to keep it going. Considering those limitations Mami adds it as an ability to explore later, but not on the regular practice menu.

Sayaka takes her leave at this point. She's already running late for dinner, and Kaoru hears her phone ring just as she's leaving the junkyard, with Sayaka assuring her mother that she's already on the way home. Kaoru has a momentary pang as she wishes she got to eat dinner with her mother. She actually hasn't seen her mother in over a week, and even then it's usually only during the late afternoon on the weekends. Weekends that are now being spent on elite training.

Turning back, Kaoru sees that Mami has dragged a small duffel bag out from where it had been behind an old refrigerator. In Mami's left hand is her notebook, and in her right a pencil that is tapping against her chin in thought. Looking up at Kaoru, Mami outlines her thoughts on what is next. "We've got another hour or so of daylight, so I think we want to work on the two ideas we had. A clearing move to push people away from you, and using your voice directly as a weapon."

Kaoru sighs, she had been hoping they were going to call it a night, but she supposes Mami is right. Mami suggests starting with the clearing move, as it would probably be related to what they had learned about Kaoru's magic with Sayaka's musical shields. Mami first has Kaoru run quickly through the finger snapping method to summon platforms and shields to get back in that mindset. Then they start trying different ways of making sounds to try and summon a larger burst of sound.

At first Kaoru tries clapping. Kaoru finds that when she makes a loud sharp clap she can get a half sphere of something like a shield around her hands. After working on this approach for ten minutes, Kaoru has managed to shape it to appear as a curved temporary magical shield that is a large enough oval to cover her full body from the front. Well... two times out of every three attempts anyways, which is pretty good actually. Getting it to explode outwards as a way of forcing enemies away isn't working out as well. Mami encourages her, telling her that she is making much faster progress then expected, but this just frustrates Kaoru more.

As her next attempt fizzles without even forming the sphere, Kaoru stomps her foot in frustration, and is nearly knocked off her feet as her magic that she had failed to push into the clap instead slipped into the stomp and softly exploded around her. Mami shouts excitedly, "That! How did you do that?" Kaoru is almost as excited when she tells Mami that she had put her magic into the sound waves created by stomping her foot.

After five more tries, Kaoru decides this is even easier then the snapping fingers to create the platforms. It's as if this is a natural flow of her magic to do this. The burst of energy seems to flow up and outward from her feet, almost like a funnel, only flowing up and out instead of in and down. After examining the move with her Soul Gem as well as her eyes, Mami excitedly announces that this was exactly what they'd been trying for. Mami murmurs to herself while taking more notes. Making plans for a getting a large number of other magical girls to help with training Kaoru in this new ability under something approaching combat conditions.

Mami tells Kaoru that she should practice both the clap shield and the foot stomp burst for thirty minutes each day. She also suggests, and has Kaoru write it down in her notebook, continuing to try and make the clap provide a burst, and to try and make the foot stomp directional. Being flexible in how she is able to use her abilities is key. Although, Mami wants her to work on the basics first for the next couple days before trying to modify them.

With the setting sun, Mami moves on to the effort for Kaoru to use her voice directly as a weapon, the way she does her harp. Mami pulls three glass cups out of her duffel bag for Kaoru to use as target practice. Kaoru tries for ten minutes to fire an energy beam with her voice, singing at the cups. At last she manages to crack one of the glasses.

Mami has been observing with her Soul Gem out, and stops Kaoru to talk about what she observed. "Well, it's not the energy beam we were looking for. Instead it's as though your voice is making the glass vibrate, and you have magic in those vibrations, causing it to crack." Mami gives her assessment, "I think it's worth exploring. Instead of trying to fire a beam of energy along your voice, try and just make the glass shatter with vibrations."

Kaoru finds this much easier, and after three attempts, shatters one of the glass cups, and then rapidly shatter the other two with her next two attempts. In the deepening shadows, Kaoru feels proud of her accomplishment. Mami just takes notes while nodding. She then directs Kaoru to try the same trick on the windows of the various junk cars around them for the last five minutes of daylight. It's a bit more difficult, but by the end of the five minutes, Kaoru has manged to successfully destroy one car window.

Mami congratulates Kaoru, and promptly crushes her confidence by saying that tomorrow she'll bring some empty metal cans for her to work on next. "Destroying glass has rather limited applications," Mami notes matter of factly. "So we'll just have to work on doing the same thing with other materials." Noticing Kaoru's worried face, Mami offers more encouragement, "Don't worry, we've barely started." Kaoru takes another deep breath and then lets it out while nodding. She'll just have to keep pushing forward she guesses.

As Kaoru heads home she is feeling a little tired, and it's only the second day. She hopes that once the exploration of her powers is over that it will start to get easier. Mami has promised her books on the physics of sound and some books on calculus to arrive tomorrow. When Kaoru asked when she was supposed to study that, Mami had just looked at her blankly, and said, "After your practice of course. There's plenty of time between when it get's dark and you go to bed." Kaoru is beginning to wonder if maybe Mami has forgotten that they aren't all as workaholic as she is.

Whew. So there is the second training omake. I tried to cut down on the dialog a lot this time, as that tends to make the story expand very quickly. I just barely managed to get through most of what I wanted to cover in the second Omake. I hope it still came out okay. I'll do some proof reading tomorrow.

So on the food situation. I did a bit of research, and I think (but am not entirely sure) that it would cost about $760 to provide enough brown rice to feed 50 people for a month. So if we assume that water is included in the cost of the apartments and house, then we are perfectly able to keep our meguca fed and watered. Although the meguca would need to spend their own money if they want any variety in their diet.

Take into account that some of our meguca can rely on their families, and we can probably provide for our meguca for less than that.

Well.. just rice is sufficient to keep from starving, yes, but it'd hardly be considered a sufficiently healthy diet.

A quick search brought up this article with some handy charts broken down by age ranges and gender. A low-cost plan for 12-18 year old girls is about $200 per month, and 9-11 year olds are just about the same.

So, total food costs for 50 girls would be about $10,000. Can drop that to maybe $8000 with the thrifty plan. Of course some of that is probably covered by families, for those girls who still have them, but regardless, it's a pretty major bit of cash.

Edit: And obviously, that's US costs; it may vary if localized to Japan.

Edit2: Missed a note at the bottom; if dealing in bulk (7+ people in the family), we can drop the costs by 10%.

To start with, that's plenty. Keep in mind that the girls have been managing their own food concerns. That month we didn't give them a stipend was probably a really hard month for them. If we start having the organization handle the basic food needs with a rice supply and let them supplement, that'll help.

I think that food costs have been abstracted away.

Also, generally food prices in Japan are higher then the US. Except for rice, which I think is subsidized.

I think the question is: Does it add to the complexity of what inverted_helix has to keep track of, and are there better complexities for that effort to be spent on?

For the answer to that though we will need to wait for helix to comment.

$760 is what you feed starving rats who are lucky just to have a roof over their head (ie: the first couple months of the sim). It's not what you feed people who've gotten to the point where they are actually happy with their lives, have cable television and cell phones and so forth.

Okay, this is pretty irrefutably true. I guess the food ship has sailed. There really isn't any sort of way to work it in now that we're as far in as we are.

Eh, we're all just being twitchy waiting for the next update, since this one took so long to agree on.

New challenge: Agree on a plan within 24 hours (level A) or 48 hours (level B)!

Thinking it should be doable since we've pretty much already run all the numbers for how we plan to hunt from now on, and most the rest is stuff we already planned to do. Just need to fiddle with things based on the exact events that happen this turn.

It was previously stated that the stipend covered food costs. While $100/month isn't that much, buying in bulk means that everyone should have a reasonable diet.

Plus, we're getting a restaurant soon, and then they can all eat there.

Going to open with an apology for this, but going to delay the update until after new year's, I've got a lot going on and just can't work up the motivation and time right now to work on this. I'll be freer after that though to work on it.

I've been trying but it just won't come to me right now and I've got enough other stuff going on to complicate spending time on it.
