[DISCONTINUED] In the Beginning, There Was Man (WH40k x SC)

Take into account that one of the key reasons that we went to SC is because of the balance of difficulty. Warp and Tech are basically on medium setting and thus you aren't going to see that completely overshadows us in one or the other, but we aren't going exactly overshadow anyone else either.

This was the trade off when we were talking about going to ME (Low Tech/High Warp) vs GalCiv (High Tech/Low Warp). The trade off is we aren't dealing with civs that have technology that gives the Crons a run for their money or a warp that literally worse than 40k by a FAR margin.

Besides, I am not too worried about the difficulty level. At this point I am used to dealing with hardcore shit in my 40k games.

So everyone just sit back, relax, and watch the fireworks play out.
The Curious Fan and Krain do seem to get a lot into these arguments. Like an old married couple.

Eh, fair enough - Starcraft is meant to be the middle of hte road one, where they wouldn't be superior to us in either option (quick check back, I think you've got the right of it, and Protoss are equal to Imperium more than anything, but focused on psyker stuff...)

Besides, I am not too worried about the difficulty level. At this point I am used to dealing with hardcore shit in my 40k games.
I think this has been my first 40k Quest.

So everyone just sit back, relax, and watch the fireworks play out.
I am looking forward to all the stuff that'll happen in the future.
Especially looking forward to how that Verum faction will change!

Back on IRC till I finish the update. Join me if you'd like to chat or gain insights into my mind! ;)

Unemployment is good for getting writing done at least. :p

Okay, just got from chatting with Torrmercury and Krain where I recommended the name for our group of Warp Angels to be "The Imperial Host" and Torrmercury approved!

Excuse me, at what point are we again compared to the SC timeline again?

I'm writing a new analysis - want to make sure the data is accurate for the current point of time.

Paradigm Shift Pt [2.2]
Paradigm Shift Pt 2.2

You cannot believe that this is happening. Had it not been for the fact that you are in a new realm with no daemons anywhere to be seen, you would have though one had possessed your dataslate. How was this possible? WHY?

"Please stop with the melodrama, sir. It ill suits you."

You sigh before responding to your ever dutiful Fabricator Locum, "Please, I am the Fabricator General. If I am not able to get my kicks like this, I'd have gone mad long ago."

"More mad than you are now you mean? Still, what if one of the lesser priests came in during your tirade? Or, Throne forbid, one of the other High Lords? The loss of face would be..."

She groans and then sighs as she sends the next document to your dataslate.

"Thank you Leona. You assistance and discretion is greatly appreciated, as always."

"You're welcome, sir. I only wish that you gave me more duties related to the Quest rather than bureaucracy, but then again you are rarely able to participate in the Quest these days as well, so it's a moot point."

"I'll do what I can to get you priority to continue your research on the Rhino's manufacturing processes as soon as the Sovereigns and Lord Corax allocate us space to conduct our research."

She bows to you.

"You humble me with your generosity."

You chuckle and switch gears as she enters into her overdramatic servant act.

"But of course! Now, please assist me with sorting the Magi invited to sit in on the debate in person. Your poor overstressed Lord is going insane from all the names and sects that will be represented."

As your overdramatic Lord act comes into play, you can tell that she is happy. It would not do for your dau-... protege to be upset. It was you who rescued her from a Nurgle cult back in your youth, when you were only half way into your second century of life and but an Enginseer. You were proud and upon the cusp of reaching Electro-Priest status, attached to the Imperial Guard when you purged the cult with a squad of Space Marines. She was a prisoner and you have never found another human child with as much affinity for technology.

"...Sir? You're spacing out again."

She is the daughter you never had and though her path eventually diverged from your own, with her becoming an Explorator rather than an Artisan, you are proud of her. Though you thought her lost and grieved after the scouring of Segmentum Ultima by the resurgent Tyranids, she triumphantly arrived in Sol one hundred years after her original return date. She rode in upon an ancient Ark Mechanicus accompanying her fleet, found and restored during the course of her expedition, bearing the knowledge of multiple complete STCs. She was hailed a hero and the joy you felt that day was felt all across Mars, but then the final Black Crusade came...

"Sorry. I merely got lost in memories. Ha! Another sign of why you should be replacing me!"

Her mechadendrite twitches in amusement as she responds to your proclamation of retirement.

Only fools would think that the great Techpriests of Mars disregarded their emotions and retained only logic. That is the greatest fallacy, for though your brothers and sisters of the Cult Mechanicus could not show them as easily due to your augmentations, you felt just as strongly as any other lest you lose your humanity, for according to the Mysteries and Warnings: The spirit is the spark of life and The soul is the conscience of sentience.

Emotions allow one to keep themselves relatively sanity in contrast to the tech-priests of old that went insane after a thousand years of life. Emotions prevent tech heresy and give rise to the greatest insights into the universe. Truly the Mysteries and Warnings are the pillars of the Mechanicus.

...Now if only the debate were finished, you could take the time and work with your beloved protege on her research as you once did.

Your age weighs upon you.

The factions have sent in their responses to the Moderate agenda and compromises and are ready for a final proposal of agendas to push forward.

Color Code:
Conservative
Moderate
Liberal
Invenio
Verum

Moderate Compromises and Faction Responses

  • "Keep inclusion into the Cult Mechanicus as exclusive as possible" - Conservatives
vs.
  • "Open inclusion into the Cult Mechanicus to any who are worthy to receive the blessing of education" -Liberals
- The Schola Progenium would be doing both for the Mechanicus, not only will the greater population of the Imperium have a chance to learn more about Machines, but those who show the greatest promise can be taken in by the Mechanicus. Supporting the Schola Progenium will lead to both Agenda being fulfilled.
- We disagree with this premise. The Schola Progenium program does not solve the issue, but we do agree that it will make for better Techpriests and more exclusivity, though not as much as we proposed. Agenda rescinded.
- We disagree with this premise, for the Schola Progenium program is not in contest and recruitment into the Mechanicus will be lessened from what we proposed. Still, it is better than supporting the Conservative's extreme exclusivity. Agenda rescinded.

  • "Maintain current standards of technological progression in order to prevent corrupting holy human machines with xeno or Chaotic influence" -Conservatives
- Would that mean that the technology being given to us by The Imperial Goddess is any less holy than what the Omnissiah, the God-Emperor, has already provided? Let them guide us to a new future for Machines, Science, and Technology. They freed us to continue with our Quest, they have more than earned our trust in return, have they not? We request that you take this into account in addition to the combined response below.
- Acknowledged.

  • "Maintain current standards of technological progression in order to prevent corrupting holy human machines with xeno or Chaotic influence. Technological progression will continue to move at a crawl as all new technologies need to be heavily screened, blessed, and obfuscated." - Conservatives
  • "Revise scientific doctrine so that human learning and teaching is the key to the Quest for Knowledge rather than mystery and divinity." - Liberals
  • "The Ancients once conquered the stars through their scientific prowess, so why can't we do the same?" -Invenio
  • "Warp tech, Bio tech, Artificial Intelligence, and other formerly restricted fields should now be fully open for any in the Mechanicus to study because those philosophies and technologies once deemed too dangerous as a whole no longer have a strong justification." -Invenio
- Research into recovered xeno-technology and precautions involved in such research will be expanded upon. We do not know at this time what could happen when we begin studying and experimenting such strange technology, as such we shall not be taking any risks. However, this does not mean that we will be forgoing any attempts to recover and study such technology. We must learn how our enemy fights and functions, only then can we destroy the xeno permanently. However the theology must change and adept if both the Mechanicus and Imperium are to survive. The old tenants and traditions, the Mysteries and Warnings, rituals and practices can remain, but something must be done. They made sure that both the Cult Mechanicus and even humanity survived for this long, but they are now a product of an age that has just recently passed on. It is time for us to take all of it and shape it into something that will serve our purposes HERE. If that means we must ignore or even discard certain aspects, so be it, but as long as the Mechanicus remembers old the past horrors and glories then we can move forward. We can never forget the past, but we will not be chained by it anymore. Let us remember the hard lessons we learned back in our True Home, of the treachery that unknown technologies and sciences visited upon us all. Beware of the hubris that the Ancients fell pray too, for we may not survive another event such as the Iron Men rebellions. The moderates support a balance approach of "old and new" in regards to ideology change. Perhaps a sort of old and new testaments
- The Conservatives are willing and able to work with the Invenio and Liberals on a compromise to their agendas. We shall hash out our own deal and take your words into account.
- The proposed changes are reasonable. The Liberals shall support a compromise to our agenda and work with the Conservatives and Invenio.
- The Invenio College is amiable to a compromise. We shall work with the Conservatives and Liberals to find a middle ground for both safety and progress.

"Blunt revelation that the Emperor is not the Omissiah + deride the Emperor"
- Spin it by pointing out that this might once have been true, but the Emperor saved literally every single being on the fleet by personally fighting Chaos for our future, followed by a direct message of love and pride to all of us. So if He was not the Omnissiah before, He most certainly is now. Redirect fanaticism towards the God-Emperor. Paradigm Shift 2.1
- The Verum have reevaluated our stance. All of our agendas are revised.

Deals

Conservatives
  • In exchange for the Adeptus Mechanicus fully integrating and joining into the Imperium of Man, we will push to be given two new seats on the Imperial Senate. One for the armed forces of the Mechanicus and one for the Explorator fleets. However, we must allow the Adeptus Terra to have full access to all decision making made on our Forge Worlds and they can set the planetary tithe. There is a silver lining to all of this, we can work around this deal to work in our favor. We will also push for requiring a member of the Mechanicus to be on the command staff for all decision making processes on any other Imperial world that has a sufficient technology level. This oddly enough means that on all future worlds the Mechanicus will have someone in a major position of power…potentially even on Shrine or Astartes worlds.
- Two new seats on the Imperial Senate for the Ad Mech. The moderates believe this is quite generous and will make the Mechanicus stronger. The Mechanicus will also effectively let the Adeptus Terra have complete oversight over Forge World operations. In exchange the Mechanicus will be allowed to have someone on the command staff of all future Imperial worlds with sufficient technology and have a voice in the decision making process. This could effectively mean even a sliver of influence and control on future Shrine and Astartes controlled worlds.
- We believe that this is nearly an acceptable compromise, but including the military build up suggested below, we will rescinded our agenda and support the Liberals.

  • The Adeptus Mechanicus and Imperium of Man will put forward resources to help rebuild the Skitarii forces. Rebuilding the Titan legions at this time is unattainable, but resources towards holding and maintenance facilities on Eden is possible.
- Resources will be put forward to rebuild the Mechanicus military within 6 months. Facilities for the Titans on Eden will be completed within 8 months. The moderates believe this is reasonable.
- The Conservatives thank you for this gesture.

Liberals
  • Thanks to the guidance of the Holy Mother she has blessed us all by taking us to the Sanctuary System. Several of these worlds within it are filled with great mineral and promethium deposits, ripe for the great industry only a forge world can hold. The Mechanicus must be able to claim one of these worlds to create the greatest tools of civilization and war.
- Resources will be put forward to mount a significant colonial venture to one of the planets within Sanctuary within 1 year. The hope will be that we can lay the groundwork for a Forge world. All parties within the Mechanicus can only benefit from such a venture. As such the moderates have zero qualms over this
- The Liberals thank you for this gesture.

  • New fields of research will likely be a thing later on. We currently have several different fields to research in the future, but as of right now we are focused on making sure our colony is up and running. The Mechanicus however will likely put significant resources toward research once safe and secured research facilities are put in place. For those that wish to start researching the basics into a new field, that will be possible with proper oversight but they will not be restrained from any attempts.
- Research will begin once the proper facilities are put in place. General curiosity into certain technologies can be allowed with proper oversight. We will research new fields, but we are going to be smart about this. The moderates have no problem agreeing to such a measure.
- This is reasonable. The Liberals agree to this and thank you for the gesture.

Invenio

  • Already the Exodus fleet and the Imperium has put forward resources for the creation of a shipyard for repairing our great vessels. The next logical step is for the expansion of the shipyard to allow for the production of new vessels. However we must take into account time and resources constraints, the Imperium and Mechanicus will do what they can to get production sped up. On the other hand, we still have vessels that can be used for exploration, as such we can dedicate several ships towards exploration missions. The faster our industry takes off, the faster we can also dedicate one of the Ark Mechanicus towards such a venture.
-Ship production is a very time and resource intensive process, but it will begin ASAP. We have ships that are currently not doing much, as such it is possible to assign some of them towards exploration missions. If the Invenio want the assistance of one of the great Arks, they might want to help in making our industry a lot stronger. Moderates can support such a measure
- The Invenio agree that this is reasonable. Thank you for this gesture.

  • All recovered xeno artifacts will be researched under the most secure and cautious facilities until we can determine how dangerous they are. Anything that proves that it is not inherently dangerous can be studied further.
- See previous mentions above, we are going to be playing it safe with such things. The moderates however will support research once it has passed safety trails and can be moved to another secured facility for testing
- This is reasonable, though we worry that there will be too much restriction as was done in the past. The previous gesture assures us that you are taking this seriously and thus the Invenio are willing to agree to this.

Verum

  • Freedom of Speech is possible, but no lies isn't. There is such a thing as a need-to-know basis and some information is too toxic to be out in the open. If the Verum wish to have in place the laws that will not gag or restrain the voice of dissent within the ranks of Mechanicus than that is quite possible. However, this is not the right to cause problems such as attempting to incite a hostile response or allowing information to leak out to the greater galaxy. For all intents and purposes, the freedom of speech will allow for those to voice any injustice or criticism against their peers without fear of reprisal.
- The entire Adeptus Mechanicus gets the freedom of speech right. This effectively means that an individual tech-priest is effectively allowed to say whatever he wants…but not without consequences. Words do have power and misuse of such a power could result in the Mechanicus responding harshly. The moderates are willing to put up with the Freedom of Speech clause, but they would like to make sure that it is clear to everyone within the Mechanicus that this is not something that is without repercussions.
- This is reasonable. The Verum will take this into account in our revised agenda.

  • The free flow of information within a scientific organization is important, but some information is just too dangerous to let out. Perhaps it would be best to examine this option in the future, once we have ended these debates and gone over the great STC libraries for any dangerous information.
- In 1-2 years' time, the Mechanicus will come back to examine the proposal of opening up all information to the ranks of the Mechanicus. We could allow for at least the senior Magi to have free access, while allowing the less experience a chance with the assistance of a senior magos. The moderates believe that attempting such a measure at this time, especially with all the strange and dangerous technology and along with whatever was in the STC libraries, is just political impossible. The Verum will have the right to bring it back up, if they want to bring it back up, in at least a year's time.
- This is also reasonable, though we worry that you will renege on the agreement. Thus we will push this as part of our revised agenda.

I have removed the power plays because there's no point in me keeping them. You guys pretty much almost perfectly got all the compromises and deals and you can successfully oppose whatever is left that you don't like.

The Final Agendas

Conservative Agenda
  • Expand upon the theological aspects of the Adeptus Mechanicus and reorient the Omnissiah as the Emperor of Man. None opposed.
    • Ritual and mysticism maintained, increases chance for wondrous artifacts being created, somewhat decreases output quantity of goods, and increases maintenance costs.
  • Expansion of libraries in which all Mechanicus members must contribute to in order to prevent loss of knowledge, either of technologies, insights, production processes, etc. None opposed.
    • Prevents knowledge hoarding as was done in the old realm as well as preserving knowledge from being lost through hoarding.

Liberal Agenda
  • Merge the Adeptus Mechanicus into the Imperium as not just a sister empire in union, but as a full part of the Emperor's realm. Supplemented by pushing for 2 new Imperial Senate seats for the Lord Explorator and Lord Commander Skitarii as well as requiring a member of the Mechanicus on the ruling council of every Imperial world with sufficient technology. Conservatives & Moderates & Invenio supported, Verum opposed.
    • Full control over the integrated Mechanicus, greater efficiency in the Mechanicus coordinating with other Imperial organizations, Mechanicus no longer controls their own planets unless a member becomes planetary governor, slightly faster research.
  • Revise religious doctrine to allow for Eldar tech as holy as well as bring psykers into the fold to start studying and understanding the Eldar technology that the Empress and her Saint are so graciously providing. None opposed.
    • Psykers are able to become techpriests: Techsingers unlocked. Mild distress amongst the rest of the Imperium (-1 morale across the board).
  • Coordinate with and use the Schola Progenium to scout for talent and induct them into the Cult Mechanicus. None opposed.
    • Techpriest recruitment rate and quality increases.

Invenio Agenda
  • Open up scientific exploration to the Imperium as a whole, not just the Adeptus Mechanicus. Verum supported, Conservatives & Moderates & Liberals opposed.
    • The Adeptus Mechanicus no longer holds a monopoly on technology and any person within the Imperium is able to help make scientific advances, greatly increases tech advancement, new technologies are somewhat susceptible to Chaos, mild distress amongst the rest of the Imperium (-1 morale across the board).

Verum Agenda
  • Incorporation of Freedom of Speech into the Mysteries and Warnings. Specifically the ability to question and speak one's mind but to be wary of the consequences thereof. Conservatives & Liberals opposed.
    • Scientific progress somewhat slows, tech susceptibility to Chaos is somewhat reduced, mild distress amongst the rest of the Imperium. (-1 morale across the board)
  • The free flow of information so that any techpriest is able to find the truth of what is already known. Knowledge is meant to be spread, not hoarded.
    • Scientific progress is significantly increased, small chance of catastrophic failure when researching, small chance (1d100 fail on <10) per year of hereteks arising.

Ancient's Compromise
  • The Ancients once conquered the stars through their scientific prowess, so why can't we do the same? Tempered with the wisdom of the Ancients and the harsh lessons of the old Mechanicus, a new era of scientific progress will dawn where man and elf will carve their own path through the universe reliant on only themselves and those that they hold dear. Shun the Xeno, curse the mutant, burn the heretic! None opposed.
    • Significant increases in scientific progress, reverse engineering of non-human based tech is almost dead in the water, Imperial technology is significantly harder to reverse engineer, massive increase in quantity of goods produced, moderate increase in quality of goods produced, new technology is somewhat susceptible to Chaos, techpriest education quality increases, Path of the Ancients unlocked.
      • Note: Mutually exclusive with the Cornerstone Compromise. If neither are opposed neither make it through.
      • Note: This is basically the Human/Eldar/(possibly)Krork fuck everyone else tech-tree

Cornerstone Compromise
  • Research and exploration, teaching and learning, these are to become the cornerstone of the revised Quest for Knowledge, though tempered by the caution learned from the True Home. Never again shall we allow Chaos to gain the advantage, for they will not be able to corrupt our tech, for they will not be able to reach parity as we take their innovations for our own, and for our own progress will outstrip theirs. Ave Imperator! None opposed.
    • Technological progress is somewhat slower, reverse engineering is somewhat faster, massive decrease in quantity of goods produced, massive increase of quality of goods produced, mildly increases tech advancement in obscure/dangerous fields, new technologies are mostly Warp resistant, techpriest education quality increases, Imperial technology is relatively easy to reverse engineer, Path of the Sovereigns unlocked.
      • Note: Mutually exclusive with the Ancients Compromise. If neither are opposed neither make it through.
      • Note: This is basically the XCom we took your tech and made it better tech tree

Moderate Agenda
  • [] What do you oppose? Anything not opposed will pass through

++ALERT++
++HULL BREACH DETECTED IN SECTOR 8-12++
++ALL CREW EVACUATE THE SECTOR++
++EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN INITIATED++
++KEEP CALM AND AWAIT ORDERS++
++AVE IMPERATOR++

You are running to the bridge in order to take stock of the situation from the Command Throne, where you can interface with the Might of the Omnissiah's Machine Spirit. Reports are flooding in through your vox implant and you set aside some of your auxiliary cogitators to process the information feed and filter out the noise. You'll review the data once you are mind-linked to the throne.

Another explosion rocks the ship as you reach the Bridge and the evacuation order for sector 8-13 is called. You link to the Ark and you experience utter chaos.

The Ark's Spirit is writhing in pain as a digital attack hammers it from all directions. You run a trace and see that the attacks are coming from outside the ship... What?

You review the information that you stored before linking with the Ark, and you discover that the hull breaches were caused by something shooting its way out of the ship's underbelly. The sectors compromised are actually mostly untouched armories and fighter bays left unused due to being storage spaces for industrial materials. Horror fills you at the thought of what could have been constructed with those materials.

What do you do?
[] Stay connected and help the Ark fend off the electronic attack.
[] Disconnect and gather more information on the threat and the developing situation.
[] Write-in?

Note: I will be closing votes on the what do you do options in approximately 36 hours so please do not submit votes for the Mechanicus debate until after the first vote is closed. After that votes will be open for the Mechanicus debate.

What else can we do if we stay connected.
Anything beyond defending the electronic attack?

What happens if we disconnect, what would we do beyond gathering information?

See? This is why I pushed for that forum on how to be curious safely!

- [] Contact TechGuard and any TechMarines still in the arc, have them gain more intel on the threat and situation.
- [] Reconnect and help the Ark fend off the electronic attack.

Why not including warning the rest of the Imperium?

No but you defend the Machine Spirit of the Ark. If you disconnect, you leave it to fend for itself (or rather you have faith that it'll fend the attack off itself) and you focus on matters in physical space.

Hmm, I wonder if we can get Brother Lee of the Legacy Cell over here.
Write-ins!

Why not including warning the rest of the Imperium?
They already see this happening.

Hm, if this is Men of Iron, we have a +30 to the roll... would this be included here?
And would a good enough roll let us counter-attack them, instead of just staying on the defense?

Yes, yes but counterattacks are after this choice.

Also I will be leaving in a couple of minutes to go run some errands. As always questions will be answered ASAP.

Is... Aurora still around?
Throwing her along here might be good, we know the Iron Men don't do so good against warpbased tricks, and Aurora's got some Light to help even the fight (desperate situation + possibly +5 to help fight corruption + 5 to rallying people, since hopefully the friendlies could be inspired... plus 14 Inspiration would be rather good here I think).

And this is the sort of thing where I think we might want to drop Song of the Empress.

Yes, yes but counterattacks are after this choice.

So... roll whatever (guessing d50), + 30 + 11 from Zeruel if we dedicate him to this.
And probably something from the ship as well.

Would the bonus also apply to the counterattack?

- [x] Ask other ships to send fighters to examine the hole in the ships hull and deal with anything on it. Ask them also to calculate where the shot that penetrated the hull was heading. It could be heading towards the colony, or something might have shot itself out of the ship.

How's these?

Might want to specify we delegate a significant amount of this, just to be clear.
Also, would Brother Lee be able to help, given this is the Men of Iron trying to break out?
