TreeQuest: Magitech (Riot Quest)

Do we still count as Nature, though? I mean, we're altering our surroundings to better suit ourselves, we've got predators and prey working together, we're casting spells on a daily basis to achieve our goals (which we actually have)... Frankly, I don't think we're very Nature-y anymore.
Are bees and beavers not natural, for building their homes?
Is a bird cleaning a hippo's teeth not natural?
Does using tools make otters unnatural?

Honestly 'nature' is mostly just a matter of aesthetics. The biosphere is powered by a giant fusion reactor and works mostly through applied chemistry.
Although in these circumstances there may be some mystical Concepts to consider.

Regardless, we are trees throwing an army of animals at the enemy. I feel we qualify as Wrath Of Nature, at least enough for branding purposes.

can I request that we burn the favor and stop voting for vine removal with any of our creatures (outside of Bees)? Also, focused light for a Focused Action is more effective than fire and gives us free Light Magic training.
Acceptable.

[X][Action] Coordinate fight against Evil Vines (Communication)

[X][Focus] Focused Light Attack (Vines) x1
[X][Focus] Focused Light Attack (Vines) x2
[X][Focus] Focused Light Attack (Vines) x3
[X][Squirrel] Coordinate Anti-Evil Vine War

[X][Deer] Fight <Vines>
[X][Moles] Undermine Hostile Roots (Vines)
[X][Beavers] Chew Hostile Plants (Vines)
[X][Bees] Remove any additional seedlings the Vines attempt to send
[X][Ants] Attack Enemy (Vines)

[X][Burn Favor] Ask the villagers to remove vines and seedlings within the forest, under the protection of our Shields.

@Robinton, mechanically, how would you count my Action Write-In? Because in Essence it's smth like researching Fire Magic to empower and/or protect our allies. If we want to go full conceptual, think of it as something like making use of the Hearth aspect of the fire and its concept of fire driving away the darkness. Or smth.

@Robinton Since we've got Death magic unlocked, will future deaths continue to give us insights into it, or will we need to actually study/practice it to improve?

@Robinton I see someone is trying to do a Light/Dark Negacion attack on the vines, is that going to be effective given that we've never tried that Negacion in any other format? I would think that a straight up Darkness attack on their growth would be equally or more so effective than a Negacion we've never done.
Depends on what the dice roll. It's a write-in, and two Trees are collaborating, and Phigment (with his write-in bonus) is one of them. Your odds are decent.

The way I originally read it:

Your primary goal is "protecting our Creatures against the Vines", and that's the first thing that will be succeeded.

Even a modest success might save some single Creature's life. A major success would unlock something along the lines of your full Write-In.

A failure... barring severe critical-failure, would at worst cost the Forest a point or two of Resources.

Of course, if you want the primary goal to be Research, let me know.

@Robinton would Steam be opposed by Fire and Ice?
...
...
...Yes, actually. And it's a possible result of Fire+Ice, even. Very clever!

I'll keep half an eye on it in the background, and once you've built up enough experience I'll propose a relatively-easy upgrade research action.

Arthur Scrat, yes. More "fun" than "effective," but not "dangerous" in general.

For later: If you got a supernaturally tough Bear, that would be terrifyingly effective, I think...

Speaking of Bears, I've been brainstorming ways we can convert other actions into Successes towards Connecting to them, and I've come up with two:
  • Offense: Same as that time I helped with the Wolves, help Bears kill a prey animal (I still recommend Boars, because Boars are evil). The specific example I had in mind was freezing the Boar's feet to the ground, but any method that doesn't destroy the meat works.
  • Growth/Survival/Research: Nourishing Berries. Not sure which category they'd fit under; for all I know they could all fit.
Now, I remember the statement that there's a limit to how many actions can be converted by edible bribery at once; however, there's nothing stopping us from working on more than one species this way, is there? We just gotta find enough animals we want that we can bribe this way.

And besides, Bears are gluttons.

[X][Action] Grow more nuts
[X][Focus] Focused Light Attack
[X][Focus] Focused Light Attack x2
[X][Focus] Focused Light Attack x3
[X][Squirrel] Coordinate Anti-Evil Vine War
[X][Deer] Assist fight against Evil Vines
[X][Moles] Undermine Evil Vine roots
[X][Bees] Remove any additional seedlings the Evil Vines attempt to send
[X][Ants] Clean Evil Vines off Trees
[X][Wolves] Assist fight against Evil Vines

I am growing our stock pile with nuts that contain no magic cause that's all i know how to do :p maybe next turn i'll try to research growth magic?

I'm not sure if you're joking or if you actually don't know, but just in case - You're an Elder Root Tree, which means that you get 4 dice for all Growth and Offense actions. For actions in all other categories, you get 2 dice. For example, you can use Fire Magic on the Vines with 4 dice (Offense), or you can help grow the Sensing Tree with 4 dice (Growth), but if you helped raise the shield (Defense), you'd only get 2 dice.

So I randomly found both this quest and this site after searching nation-building quests. After reading through its many posts and pages I had to not just join the site but post a comment here. This idea is brilliant, as is the way that you have set things up. Its quite nice how things are flowing, despite the riot nature of this being each person does their own thing while also taking into consideration what others are doing.

But yeah I wanted to comment and say, really awesome work and quest and thank you for creating and continuing it!

PS. I'm likely to participate as a new tree, though I don't know what I want yet. hehe

EDIT: So I am thinking about something like a 'magic tree', but I don't want to cause problems for the group or go off on my own or anything like that. So I figure Mind Tree but am still thinking on the other parts. Like do we have 'pure magic' studies?

Hm. That's actually a good question-- I'm not sure!

on the one hand the implication seems to be that Understanding of a thing leads more directly to magic of that thing

On the other hand there's also an implication in the worldbuilding and story so far that says specialization is probably better.

I'm pretty sure that the Forest is cheating at magic really hard. Apparently it's unusual for any individual to be able to use more than one or two kinds of magic with much skill. Forest is gettig around this by being a collective mind-hive that is simultaneously using the benefits of being many individuals (can properly understand and hold in mind many forms of magic) and one collective individual (use it all in a cohesive fashion).

"The Trees are fucking cheaters."

If most of your votes before you become an Elder Tree are in a specific task, then you can choose to get a bonus in that task. For example, there's a Special Research Tree that gets 7 dice when researching Ancient Tech or Magic, and I think they only get 1 dice when doing any other task.
