TreeQuest: Magitech (Riot Quest)

I'm going to offer a standing 10 autosuccess bounty for anyTree that writes up an Anomalies and Situations post. +2 dice to all normal actions (or a slight but useful bonus to Write-ins) as long as you maintain it - and if you quit and someone else takes over, they get the +2 dice instead.

Some things you'd want to include:
  • How did Elves manage so many True Resurrections?
    • We know Elves used True Resurrection a lot. We know True Resurrection is absurdly difficult/expensive. Sure, their long lifespans gave them significantly more resources to work with, but scholars still state that something is missing. Did they have some shortcut to render the Ritual less difficult?
  • What happened to the Dwarves?
    • Nobody's seen one since roughly the Cataclysm. How and why did that happen? Can we dig into any of their old Underground Cities?
  • What's up with Dragons?
    • They may or may not have ever existed, but the name - and association with Fire - are definitely present. The GM is definitely implying something, but we lack information to figure out what.
  • Nemesis
    • We seem to have some sort of Nemesis, possibly Vampiric, that is sending Monsters after us (hydra-thing, Vines). They seem to like using Portals. The Nemesis is likely a singular being, and almost certainly lives deep underground. Let's be on the lookout for more attacks, and see if we can take the fight to him/her/them/it.
  • Lots more. Who or What Created the Elves? What were the prior Apocalypses (before 112: Cataclysm)? What stopped the prior Apocalypses? How does the Forest's Telepathy work? What are the true Underpinnings of the Magic System? Etc.

@Robinton
[Minor Question] Has the art to create Magical Fire been lost, or can it still be done, albeit only the weakest?
Magefire requires Journeyman skill to cast, and Master to reliably control. Each stronger version of Magical Fire requires one additional level of skill beyond the previous. Truefire requires Grandmaster to cast and Legendary to suppress.

[Minor Question] What makes Magical Fire more than ordinary Fire, even Magma and the like? Is it the heat? The ability to go burny burn burn? For Sunfire-tier Magical Fire, do you literally need to add something like Light Magic to create a pseudo-Sun?

Note that you would probably rather be hit by Magefire than Magma, if only narrowly, since Magma is generally... very hot. Nevermind something like Liquid Tungsten.

But to answer your question, you don't need Light or other Magics - though those aren't a bad idea. Rather, you need to, essentially, bind the Concept of Fire to an actual physical Fire. It is something like calling upon a Platonic Ideal, if you like. Magefire is a very basic and weak job, that still results in something nearly impossible to extinguish. Dragonfire will burn water and sometimes weaker Magic, Sunfire will burn Asbestos and Noble Gasses, and Truefire will cheerfully devour pretty much anything (including Magic and Pattern-Tech and Voidshards and...).

Harry Potter Fiendfyre would count as something like "Cursed Dragonfire" or possibly "Cursed Sunfire" in this world, for reference. It's definitely not powerful enough - as shown - to devour the whole world, and in theory, unchecked Truefire could do just that.

Hmm, I could start working on something like that. It'll be a couple hours before I can properly compile it though, and I'll probably miss a few things.

I mean
and this is pure speculation

but maybe the people who traditionally live underground in caves didn't do so hot around the invasive predatory species that liked existing in total darkness

Or, other speculation, they went "Lets make an EXTRA deep hole and seal all entrances. 0 Vampires is the only acceptable number in our new home!". Going full quarantine to avoid the issue @Fabricati mentioned.

did they get their asses deleted from existence?
Possible.
Though you know that a few Dwarven Vampires existed on the surface for a century or two after the Cataclysm, and a critical existence failure seems like it would likely-as-not erase those too, so... weak evidence against?

Both perfectly plausible. Maybe a combination thereof, with much of their society gone but pockets surviving in extreme quarantine.

History says there were some - mostly Magical or similar - underground biomes back in the day. Cave Trees, Cave Monsters, etc. etc.

I will add for the record that pre-Cataclysm, there were a handful of Dwarves that lived on the surface, and another handful that did things like Asteroid Mining. The first handful disappearing is very slightly odd, but there were few enough of them and enough broad-scale destruction that it doesn't say much. The second handful disappearing isn't odd at all, since all of those operations basically shut down or got shot down in the Cataclysm.

Situations and Anomalies
Alright, let's get started on this thing.

Currently under construction. But it probably will be forever, honestly.

Anomalies, Mysteries, and Unanswered Questions
Accompanied often by wild speculation and hypotheses.

-What exactly are Elves? They can interbreed with humans, and have a legacy in the form of part-elves
--Hypothesis; Elves are a human sub-species with extreme magical modifications
-Why can't pure Elves survive anymore?
-Are we going to end up making new Elves if we keep up learning about biological enhancement and connect to some humans?
-How did Elves manage so many True Resurrections? 'More resources' isn't enough. Perhaps it is something to do with their condition?
--Hypothesis; Elves were dependent on some kind of external source or force to survive, this might also have worked as a 'backup' to let them resurrect themselves easier.
--Altherate Hypothesis; the Elves had something akin to a 'First Root', that was destroyed.
--Alternate Hypothesis; some form of curse or Wish altering the rules of the magic that enhanced them, and now it backfires and makes them sickly and die.
-Part-Elves all appear to have a broken connection to something similar to, but distinct from, the source of power that Monsters use.
--Hypothesis; this is the external source that provides vital energy to allow Elves to exist, likely supporting magical biology that just can't function without it.

-Are there any Dwarves left? If so, where are they? And why did they disappear?
-Can we find some old Dwarven lands?
-Are there any part-Dwarves? Or are Dwarves different enough from humans they can't interbreed?
--Hypothesis; it is likely that Dwarves were either wiped out by Vampires, or retreated deep underground
-What's up with Dragons? A level of magical fire is called Dragonfire, is this just myth, or were there Dragons around at some point to breathe it?
-If there were Dragons, what happened to them? If not, why are they so often referenced?

-What other fantastic races might be out there? Do we have any Orcs? Goblins? Trolls? Halflings? Gnomes? Etc.?
-Where did they all come from?
--Hypothesis; this world was a deliberate project from a space-faring civilization, races may have been deliberately created or seeded.

-What exactly is up with Vampires? They seem way more deeply tied into conceptual magic and Malice and such than other races.
--Where did the big Vampire civilization that warred with the Elves go? Were they wiped out, or are there still holdouts?
--How would such a large population of voracious predators, whose living conditions are inimical to their prey, even manage to stay vaguely stable?
-Are there such things as Werewolves?

-Are the Humans we meet really humanity as we would know them?

-Apparently Fey exist, but what exactly are they really?

-What, precisely, is the difference between a Monster and an ordinary animal?

-It has been determined that Monsters really aren't normal animals.
-They seem to be receiving energy from... somewhere else. Presumably to support their supernatural abilities. But why?
-They're also receiving instructions from elsewhere. Pushes that make them more aggressive, more violent, more destructive.
--Hypothesis: Monsters are some kind of remotely controlled bio-weapon. For what purposes we don't know.
--But what exactly is providing this energy to Monsters? It would have to be something able to keep running for ages.
-Malice seems to generate Monsters, but Monsters still hide from Malice Storms. Perhaps a mature or wild Monster is no longer Malice-y enough to avoid being harmed by it?

-The ones that our Nemesis sends are dripping with Malice. Wild monsters don't seem to have this, or at least not to the same extent. Are they the same, or are wild monsters different from our Nemesis' monsters?
--Perhaps all Monsters started as Malice-driven attack drones, but after the last apocalypse or two the system has mostly gone 'wild'?

-There seems to be varying grades of Monsterism. The Shadow Spinner was basically mindless beyond external impulses, but there are also some Dire Wolves around that are just big wolves with an extra push to be more aggressive.
-Correction; the Shadow Spinner that attacked us was basically mindless, but there are some 'wild' ones nearby that aren't. It is increasingly looking like there's a distinction between 'wild' monsters and the basically mindless fresh ones our Nemesis throws at us.

-Can Monsters interbreed with normal animals?
-Were they made from animals somehow, or were they entirely created artificially?
-We've got a Lesser Wraith captive now, and it certainly seems to be some kind of construct.

--NOTE: Monsters we Connect to seem to get a lot smarter and more self aware, much like animals. That wraith has gone from 'mindless attack drone' up to 'fully sapient' quite rapidly... and really doesn't want to go back. This is ethically murky, but so far the test group is 100% in favor of even hostile Connection and ending up less enslaved and more intelligent.

-Physics seems to apply in general, but how deep does it go? Are things fundamentally determined by elemental chemistry and nuclear forces, or has Magic taken over some of those roles?
-How big is the world? How much of it is known?
--Apparently about Earth-sized. It was all known but the maps are incredibly badly out of date, so that hardly counts.
-What is Magic, really?
--How deep do Elements go? Can we work with Elemental Hydrogen in a magical sense?
---Chemical elements are apparently valid magical elements.
--We've learned some about how to learn magic. Mainly through understanding things, or through traumatic near-death experiences.
---But how does understanding something interact with Magic?
--Magic can also be given in some ways, mainly by channeling it through someone trying to learn
---This implies that magical energy is something that can be pushed into people. But how does this relate to it's apparent omnipresence?
--Does it obey conservation of Energy? If so, where does the power come from?
---It seems to at least mostly obey energy conservation; we just have some really big biological energy reserves. Still a bit funky though...
--It seems heavily based in understanding things, but why is this?
---How does Magic know you understand something? What is it exactly that is reacting to people's Intent?
-We can learn Magic pretty quickly by most measures. What exactly determines how fast one learns it?
--Elves apparently had seemingly arbitrary restrictions on their learning of magic. How does this work, when it seems largely based on understanding?
---It's apparently just that they generally learn at significantly slower rate, with their Talent being something they learn at more human speeds and thus can get really, really good at due to extreme lifespan.
-And what is Pattern-tech?
--The name implies something involving Patterns. Maybe a magical equivalent to circuitry? Or perhaps something deeper?
-How extensive are underground caverns? Does this world have an Underdark? There were apparently at least Dwarves down there at some point.
--There are apparently at least some big cavern systems down there, but not necessarily all connected.
-This world apparently had a lot of satellites once. Were any other planets in the local solar system colonized?
--There were at least a few other outposts, but no other habitable planets. But do any still remain?

-Where did we come from? Spontaneous mutation, some kind of long-lost project?
-How does our telepathy work?
--Apparently having a telepathic network like ours while still maintaining individuality between component entities is really strange.
--We are totally Psionic, which apparently is distinct from Mind Magic. Good to know!
-Do we have a First Root? If so, what is it? If not, why not?
-Why did we just suddenly start being sapient one day?
--Hypothesis; telepathy network hit critical mass allowing the Forest to become sapient
-Where did we come from? Were we created, or a fluke?
-Why does our Connecting to things seem to make them so much smarter?
--Hypothesis; Our telepathy network helps support higher brain functions through distributed thought
--Further Hypothesis; this is connected to us being sapient as well, our telepathy network just makes things intelligent, us included.
--This appears to be related to our status as Psionic. Perhaps Psionics have a mental-boosting effect?
-Can we Connect to other plants?
--We can! We're doing it more now.
-Did any of the saplings that got washed downstream in the first spring survive?
--Yes, some did!
-What's up with the eighth sense of the Sensing Trees? The one like the surf?
--It's apparently 'Timewaves'.
-What's up with Empty Trees? They don't seem to be made of normal matter.
--See 'The Void'

Nemesis
-We've got some kind of nemesis. What's up with them?
-They seem to like portals a lot. But they never confront us directly.
-They seem good at creating Monsters. Like really good.
--But sometimes they cut corners, so there are limits.
-Why do they know we exist? Why the animosity?
-Also... why do they keep to our same level of strength? If they'd sent the Vines first instead of the Octopus, we might have been overwhelmed. Their ability to create portals suggests they could probably have destroyed us early when we were weak if they really wanted to.
--Are they trying to be frugal? If so, why?
--Or are they deliberately testing us?
--Or is there some kind of 'rules' holding them back?
--Maybe they themselves are needing to establish infrastructure of some sort to support their monster-making?
-They seem to dwell in some kind of huge cavern, location indeterminate. There were quite a lot of Monsters there. No clue whether all of them are with the Nemesis or if they just happen to live in the same area.

-Perhaps they have some relation to Monsters in general? It's now looking like Monsters are probably artificial, so perhaps they dwell in some kind of monster creation lab?

SAWINGA
-Vampire-patsy organization openly dedicated to the destruction of Thinking Trees.
-That this exists says good things about how much we are going to beat the Vampires up in the future, if they had this set up quite a while ago likely as an attempt to kill us early.
-Has an annoying Luck Mage who is problematic to deal with.

Nearby Nation
-Did we ever get word back about if our wood was handy or not? Yep, they really like the stuff.
--Estimated time to some wizard gang coming over to check us out is now significantly shorter.
-Should we expect other groups of humans to start investigating us now that the villagers have probably let some vague hints slip?
--Yep, this has happened at least once.
-Given our extreme potential, what are the chances that somebody high up realizes that we're a game-changer and tries something?
--This probably won't happen for a while yet; we've had barely an interaction with the world beyond Newton Village.
--A bunch of Seers knew enough to come to us specifically for shelter from a Malice Storm, and then left before they could learn more very much intentionally.
-Local nation is a loose confederation known as the Central Leauge.

Heroes
-Is Craig Forman still alive?
-Who or what is Cali?
-Just how common are people who would qualify as 'Heroes'?
--Uncommon, but not unheard of.
-What exactly differentiates a Hero from just someone who is very skilled? Or is there no difference?
-How common are Fairies, and how exactly do they work?
-Arthur Scrat is probably a Hero now! Maybe we should check if there's anything different about him? Some kind of weird Fate stuff or something?
-Old Man Matterson is probably a retired Hero. He doesn't make a big deal about it.

-We've converted the Grimm siblings into Speakers. This will probably have long-term effects. We should watch carefully.
--Interestingly, all this took was them Accepting the offer. There seems to be some kind of funky Pact-ish thing going on here. We did it largely on instinct. May bear further investigation.
--It seems that the Grimm Speakers are indeed some kind of Magical pact in addition to the Psionic connection.
-We've rescued a refugee named Sara. She's probably important somehow.

alright, if we're going to interact with them more, this should have its own spoiler.

Last Star
-What are the Lost Star elves up to right now?
--They apparently spend a lot of time hunting Vampires, but that can't be all they do.
-How will they react when they discover us?
--Actually, given that they have a Seer, how likely is it that they already know about us? And if not, why not?
---Apparently it is very likely they know about us at least in general. We just messaged them, so they totally know about us.
---Hey, the elves know Morse! That's convenient. We should ask them lots of inane questions, and maybe some important ones.
-Their names are Adrian, Idrial, and Rachel, last name Knight.

They gave us some advice! Most of it was pretty immediate, but some of it is longer term.
-Already handled the immediate research suggestions
-We were warned to be subtle. There are multiple theories about this.
--One is that it was in reference to the immediately upcoming attack at the time, and that it would be better to avoid being too obvious in responding to it.
--Or it could be that we needed to be subtle about preparing about it.
--Or it might just be general advice that we should keep our Nemesis from knowing everything we can do, since they seem to be adapting to our abilities.
-We're also supposed to beware of things that are too good to be true. We don't know if this has happened yet, but it's probably best to remain cautious.

-They told us to take care of someone named 'Sara'. We found her and her band of refugees and have given them shelter! We still don't know why Sara is important though.

-What caused the Cataclysm? What happened before it?
-Just how many layers of apocalypses are there total?
-This world appears to have been more sci-fi once. What broke things so thoroughly that we don't even see the ruins? There's plenty of buried stuff, but it hasn't been nearly long enough for that to happen naturally, more of it should still be on the surface.
--Maybe we're just in a boring spot? Or did the Vampires deliberately erase most of it just out of petty evilness?
-What does history look like in general in our area?
-How much of the history people know is actually correct?

-There's an anti-magic cave nearby. Is it intentional, incidental, or what?
--Does it contain a strong voidshard, or is it lined with weak ones?
--Does the anti-magic go all the way down, or is it just a barrier?
--Maybe our Nemesis lives down there?
---This seems unlikely given recent discoveries, but isn't ruled out.

-There seem to be relatively few random Monsters in our vicinity
--Are we monopolizing some kind of magical mojo they would need?
--Or are we just relatively blind to detecting them for some reason?
--We're working on automatic monster-detection and will probably know more soon.

--Nah, they're around, we just weren't detecting them as much to start. Monster Energy is different from Magic, so they didn't show up as well.

There are apparently two towns nearby. What are they like?
-Talanburg is mostly Elven.
-Andrewburg is mostly Human.
--Both are apparently city-states, at least after a fashion.
--What do they produce?
--We're getting close to Connecting to one of these towns. How will that work, we wonder? Will they dream of trees?
---We connected to the Trees Talanburg is built in. This might become awkward.
---See more in 'Other Polities'

Shadow Spinner Nest
-There's a nest of wild Shadow-Spinners nearby. They seem distinct from the one that attacked us as a vanguard of our Nemesis' assault wave.
-Really risky to deal with
-But also very convenient for Woo Clan Soldier disposal services.

Newton Village
-We've formed a pretty firm alliance with Newton Village. Not that large, but does have someone who is probably a retired Hero.
-Events are slowly moving in the direction of us basically merging as polities.
-We've kind of taken over the job of producing trade goods, and in exchange Newton Village is serving as a useful go-between with the other Two-Legs.

-Wolves and Tavish kids - what's up there? It's been referenced from the Wolves and from Newton Village. Apparently, something happened in the past?
--There was a dust-up involving one of the Tavish kids and the wolves. Not all the wolves made it, and the Tavishes haven't forgotten the whole 'attempted eating' thing.

Refugees
-We've rescued a band of refugees! We don't know just how many will stick around, but they seem grateful. And one of them was Sara, who does want to stay at least.
-They're just living in the Forest right now. Maybe we should grow some houses.

The Woo Clan
-They're totally expansionist, imperialist jerks.
-Tried to drive some refugees toward our direction for... no real reason except trying to make excuses to start a fight?
-Worryingly closeish. Conflict is basically inevitable.
-Have some kind of defense-breaking ritual magic based on their sincere belief that they own literally everything.
-Will be a massive pain in the trunk to deal with.
-But are ultimately just the local big bully fish in a small pond.
-Uses Malice. This is a bad sign.
-Has a mind-control spynet. Very bad. We shall destroy!

The Larongo Leauge
-Kinda further away. But we have sort of made contact.
-Very freedom-y (FREEEDOM!)
-Mildly expansionist
-Loose coalition of city-states of wildly varying types
-Occasionally jerks, but way nicer than a lot of their competitors. Mostly kinda annoying.
-Recognize everyone's intrinsic right to pack up and leave for greener pastures if they don't like where they're at.

The Intelligent Ants
-A 'Protectorate' of the Larongo Leauge
-Probably actually like us more because we can talk in pheromones and aren't super annoying.
-But seem to put up with them because they're not really that bad, compared to most other options.
-Know how to spell. With ants. Kinda slow and awkward.

Talanburg
-Just one city really, but they're close by.
-City is built in a bunch of really big trees.
-We kinda Connected to the trees. (might become awkward)
-Population is mostly more Elf than not-Elf, though rules about no pure-blooded elves apply.
-Don't actually know too much about them beyond that they seem to be a fairly ordinary free city, dislike the Woo Clan, and appreciate horticulture. Which means that they look friend-shaped!

The Central League
-Loose confederation including most of the above cities, in opposition to the Woo Clan.
-More of an alliance than a nation in many ways.
-We're technically in here.

Brief summary of people removed; redundant. See Phigment's up to date list!

What is this place anyway? No really, what is it?
-I mean, it's there, but also not there, and might not actually exist, which apparently doesn't stop us from growing trees there.
-might contain dinosaurs. But they also might be something else.
-we need to figure out senses that work better here.
-but there's plenty of empty room we could fill with trees!
-just don't get eaten by the maybe-dinosaurs
-There some kind of horrible Thing in the sky that scares the Void wildlife. Our Empty Tree has so far been able to resist it, and may have some gratitude from said void wildlife for being a shelter.
-Voidshards do in fact appear to be dumping stuff into the Void. We have no idea what further implications this may have!
-Object Permanance is apparently murky in the Void. It may or may not contain mainly stuff that was destroyed.

There's a talking tree in our forest apparently. Is it a part of our Connections? Can we Connect to it?
We know this one. The Speaking Tree is something we made to communicate with the Village.

ETA:
-This world appears to have been more sci-fi once. What broke things so thoroughly that we don't even see the ruins?
We also have plenty of ruins right underneath us. that's where the Linestone and Rifle came from.

No, way back at the beginning of the quest, we got an initial exposition dump from a talking tree. Our speaker tree actually doesn't talk yet, it writes and does telepathy.

I should probably specify 'why are all the ruins so thoroughly buried, it apparently hasn't been long enough for that to happen naturally'.

-IF there were Dragons, what happened to them? If not, why are they so often referenced?

Dragons are the Avatars of Stars.

As Avatars, they are Lesser than Stars, so their innate Flame is a degree lesser and so it was labeled Dragonfire.

We don't see them anymore because of several reasons.

First, there was a Treaty. Dragons are still Huge, as Stars are Tremendous in size, and having so many Dragons around was detrimental to Reality in this area, so there was an Agreement that there would be Visitor Slots, and said slots would rotate between interested parties.

Second, as literal embodiments of Light, Malice didn't like having Dragons around, so they sabotaged the whole "Timeshare" system so it didn't actually pick anyone to have a Vistor pass, and Stars being as they are are comparatively Supremely Patient and haven't actually made a fuss yet in part because of assumptions that it's simply someone else's turn.

Third, it would take several Legendary Casters in Niche and Specialized Magics to do the metaphysical equivalent of plugging the WIFI back in so the Visitor Passes are actually distributed.

And that's why no one is even sure Dragons exist!

:V

Edit: To be absolutely clear, this was a bunch of bullcrap I pulled out of my butt because I don't quite understand what Robinton meant when they brought up this Anomaly Stuff and figured that throwing out what's basically random conjecture would be fun at minimum.

I will say that I've got a goodish start on the anomolies, but have got the stuff I can easily remember now. Anyone who wants to put up something they're curious about can do so and I'll look into adding it sooner or later; digging through the backlog for bits and pieces is likely to take me a while on my own.

How did Elves manage so many True Resurrections?
  • We know Elves used True Resurrection a lot. We know True Resurrection is absurdly difficult/expensive. Sure, their long lifespans gave them significantly more resources to work with, but scholars still state that something is missing. Did they have some shortcut to render the Ritual less difficult?
You want us to make Hypothesis? Trying to found Anwers like a Detecrive? Alrigth then here what i think how the Elves Capable of using True Resurrection Alot
Clue:
1. The Elves Have since been long Extinct
2. The reason why they go extinc is Because the Vampire Invaded and Destroy their homeland
3. The Elves Civilaziont is Very old
4. the Elves Civilaziont master many Magic
5. The Elves Particulary Favor Ligth Magic
The Hypothesis:

Hypothesis 1 The power : the Elves likey have Somekind of Reliable power source that used to power the Spell for True Rez is likey this power Source is a infrastructrue that got Destroyed in the War of the Shadow

Hypothesis 2 The Rictual : the Elves likey Due to their mastery of magic have a Rictual that can be used with together with other of their Kind Allowing them to true rez Somebody for more cheaper prize is Likey this Rictual Need a Specifc Place (Likey a Pryamida or somekind of Temple) to Allow them to True Rez Alot

Hypothesis 3 the Third law: of course The Elves is just Likely Have more Advance tech and Knowledge of Medical and Biology that allowing them to Use their Magic only on thing Needed part to do the Spell while using their Magical Knowledge to Abuse some lLoophole to Maximize the result

Hypothesis 4 Fusion: a Combination of the Above

Of course this is just a Theory feel free to prove me wrong

Ancient Tree system has flaw Easy Come Easy Go. Player Tree with the Flaw will die after 10 turns yet is reborn from a seed, presumably still being the same Player's consciousness. To us, death is just an inconvenience, a loss of power.

Would it be the sameish theme for the Elves?

Theory on Elven true rezz, power:
Do they possibly have their homeforests contacted (like we have animals contacted).

Those forest Trees may not reach even close to our intelligence, but maybe they act as additional mana generation.

Do they have anything where older creatures are stronger (can give more mana) than expected?

Reality is still running despite everything, which is a distinctly good sign.

With as old as the world is and as oft-tested as its laws are, you'd expect it to have been destroyed long ago if a proper Reality Crash were feasible.

Odd Glitches due to Time Travel, though? Yep, that seems completely plausible, and in line with known stories.

-This world apparently had a lot of satellites once. Were any other planets in the local solar system colonized?
There were supposedly a few small permanent basically-self-sustaining settlements, one on your own moon, one as a satellite for a gas giant, and two on the most livable planet. The one on your moon is confirmed-destroyed by people with telescopes. The other three are unknown.

-How big is the world? How much of it is known?
Four thousand mile radius, give or take very little. Fairly Earth-like as far as that goes.
Maps of the world exist, though a couple of continents are marked "here's what this looked like pre-Cataclysm."
I'll try to draw one up for you sometime.

--How deep do Elements go? Can we work with Elemental Hydrogen in a magical sense?
You don't know what Hydrogen is, though if you asked for information on "what is matter made of" you'd probably learn of it.
If you chose to test - yes, Hydrogen is a valid Element as far as Magic is concerned.

--Does it obey conservation of Energy? If so, where does the power come from?
It mostly seems to - though there are clearly (and casters have an intuitive feel for this) weird tricks going on. You're definitely contributing a lot to the effect, from your own body's energy and reserves. Whether there's extra energy boosting your Magic from outside yourself, though, is a valid question - "mostly not unless you're explicitly taking energy from someone else" seems to be scholars' best guess.

-How extensive are underground caverns? Does this world have an Underdark? There were apparently at least Dwarves down there at some point.
The Mountains were supposedly half full of tunnels at one point, but you don't know about your own region.
There seems to have been something like an Underdark, but it doesn't seem to have been underneath everything / everywhere, just some areas.

--Apparently having a telepathic network like ours while still maintaining individuality between component entities is really strange.
Having telepathy is really strange. Being a hive-creature-thing is also quite unusual. Small sample size.

-Why does our Connecting to things seem to make them so much smarter?
--Hypothesis; Our telepathy network helps support higher brain functions through distributed thought
Seems plausible.
Familiars tend to get somewhat smarter normally, though not quite as much as you're seeing.

--Actually, given that they have a Seer, how likely is it that they already know about us? And if not, why not?
The Last Star? You don't know IC that they have a Seer - but OOC it's almost certain that they know about you.
If you have anything like the nigh-unlimited Growth and learning potential that you think you do... There are probably Prophecies cropping up about you all over.

-Did we ever get word back about if our wood was handy or not?
Next turn. I had it in my notes, but thanks for reminding me!

-Should we expect other groups of humans to start investigating us now that the villagers have probably let some vague hints slip?
Yes, at least eventually.

-Given our extreme potential, what are the chances that somebody high up realizes that we're a game-changer and tries something?
--This probably won't happen for a while yet; we've had barely an interaction with the world beyond Newton Village.
Except Seers, really good info-gatherers, or anybody with stable Time Travel (if any), you probably haven't been noticed on any major scale yet.

-Why do they know we exist? Why the animosity?
They possibly have access to a Seer?
You might disagree with their plans for the world?

-Just how common are people who would qualify as 'Heroes'?
Rare, but there are a few of them around.

-How common are Fairies, and how exactly do they work?
Very rare, and unknown, respectively.
But there should be a few of them alive today, per continent, assuming historical averages.

-What does history look like in general in our area?
Ah, worldbuilding! I don't have time to answer this one in full right now, but keep asking and I'll keep adding to it!

Dragons are the Avatars of Stars.
Fascinating hypothesis! :)
Hilarious in bits, too, naturally! ;)

If one were to theoretically want to become channel the fucking Sun, what else should one consider other than Fire and Light?
Sun.
And maybe Daylight/Sunlight, Hydrogen, and Nuclear Fusion.
Oh - or Portals. With sufficiently tremendous skill and power, Portals could let you teleport a 1-inch cube of "The Core of the Sun" into your hands. Which is a very impressive way to die unless you have lots and lots of Fire resistance, of course.

Of course this is just a Theory feel free to prove me wrong
Many interesting hypotheses! I think you've thought about as broadly as can be, given the information currently available to the Forest.

Hmm.
That can't be completely correct, since Elven Heroes have been rezzed at nearly-full-power before. Or at least, there are multiple stories of this sort of thing, so you're fairly confident.

@Razzocnor Let me know what project(s) you'd like to apply the 10 auto-successes to, or if you'd like to bank them. Mix and match is also a valid option.
These are standard auto-successes, and benefit from bonuses.

Just need our nemesis to attack by portal-ing in something. Then we can research that portal to get started.
Prior experience suggests that'll happen within half a year.
Though there's a small sample size, so that's only an educated guess.
