TreeQuest: Magitech (Riot Quest)

Maybe beans, they have a lot of protein. Via the power of magic we could probably grew enough to feed them.
Even if that works, and I'm dubious on that given there is far more to a wolf's diet than just protein, it will almost certainly make the connection action vastly more difficult.

We get animals by offering them something, usually food and shelter. We can't offer the wolves food they would want and they have little need for shelter. What would they be getting out of any arrangement?

So how are we intending to feed those wolves?
While carnivores are vital to a healthy ecosystem I somehow doubt any of the individual squirrels, deer, etc connected to the forest will want to be personally involved.

What's this? An obstacle to the goal of connecting to every available animal? This cannot be allowed to stand!
Even If I'm too busy doing mad bio-science to actually connect to anything myself.

[x][Action] Look into alternative/preserved carnivore food sources. Honey products? Beans? Intent-filled protein fruit (we figured out worm flavored apples, maybe we can grow apples that are made of worm?) Or just preserving those deer and squirrels who die naturally so that they don't go to waste. Oh! Or since living beings are fueled by tiny Fires, some kind of special tasty wood?

No matter how much protein something has, if they can't digest it it doesn't matter. (Disclaimer: Haven't checked the actual diets of wolves. There is this thing called "obligate carnivores" though- means animals completely incapable of deriving nourishment from plants.)

[X][Action] Try to figure out how to make nuts that can release certain types of magic

this is what i've been working up to :lol2: will it fail? probably, but it is worth a try at least

You're thinking big cats. Wolves & dogs are not obligate carnivores in the way felines are. See here.

Now, what needs a Heart Tree's attention?

Not just big cats; the common house cat is also an obligate carnivore (and is, in fact, the precise species I had in mind). Granted, you did say "felines," so you kind of implied them; just pointing out that house cats aren't big cats, but they are obligate carnivores.

That said, I'm not particularly surprised about wolves being functionally omnivorous; I knew dogs were, and with how closely related they are it'd honestly be pretty weird if wolves weren't as well. I was just too tired at the time I posted that to verify, so I erred on the side of caution.

As for action suggestions... either thorns or cave excavation, I guess? Depends on what you want to grow up to be.

[X][Action] Research more advanced Movement through sheer willpower
[X][Focus] Dam the Creek
[X][Focus] Unusual Lumber
[X][Squirrel] Train with tiny ice swords
[X][Deer] Train to serve as steeds for squirrel riders wielding tiny ice swords
[X][Moles] Build Tunnels from Forest to Newton Village
[X][Interlude] The Refugee

So we don't run the risk of nearly missing it again this turn:

CAN AT LEAST ONE PERSON PLEASE DEDICATE YOUR PERSONAL ACTION TO UNUSUAL LUMBER, PLEASE?

Maybe beans, they have a lot of protein. Via the power of magic we could probably grew enough to feed them.

Here's the thing - if I'm a carnivore, and I like eating meat, it doesn't matter how successfully a thing like beans can replace the protein in my diet. It's not meat, and no amount of beans or nuts or other plant-based protein source is going to meet the satisfaction that comes from eating real meat.

Still might not fool them.

On the one hand, QM could utilize narrative and QM fiat to decide that "Yeah, II'll let you get away with such a trick".

On the other hand, the fact that real-life 'plant-based meat substitutes' (such as 'Beyond Meat') haven't really managed to turn into any kind of hit makes a strong case that there is no substitute for those who crave real meat.

Alternative possibility, though - unless we're planning to connect with whatever fish are swimming through the river, we could see if it's a viable path to set up a fishing operation and use that as our wolf-feeding option.

Eh, for wolves... canids are actually not obligate carnivores, and will in fact eat non-meat things voluntarily from time to time. They prefer meat, and are limited in their ability to get important nutrition from non-meat diets, but with the ability to communicate we could probably convince them to eat things that are nourishing, and at least taste reasonably good. They will probably still prefer actual meat, but part of my goals in being a mad biomancer tree will eventually involve figuring out how to grow meaty things, so we only really need a stopgap.

Similarly, a number of other available animals could still be viable. Bears and Boars are both omnivores. In fact, with honey available, we may be in a good position to bribe bears.

Boars being omnivorous surprised me when I first learned it, to be honest. Anyway, bears, at least, would be good recruits, if we can pull it off. Might need to wait for them to wake up, since it's winter, but they'd be really good fighters.

Boars... might be a bit too destructive to be worth it; in real life, they tear out any saplings and chase out all the competition when they decide to take over a new habitat, and make it basically uninhabitable for everything else in the process.
