So I admit I had to catch myself back up on this quest, but I enjoyed doing so quite a bit!

I was about to start complin a vote based around raiding the Bluetooth(greenskins are bioweapons as far as I know so I can't expect them to stop attacking us), attempting to create crossbow skeletons, and talking to Thane Josef Okrisson....but as far as I can see I missed the opportunity to argue for this.

Maybe I'm too used to quests running at a glacial pace. The current plan isn't bad but I do hope we don't get slammed by goblins.

[X] Graveyard Access in new Territories 2 Die
[X] Build Bathhouses 1 Dice

You have spent years carefully building up to this. Clearly explaining the laws and what taxes would be required, in money and in kind and in bones. You kept to your word about the taxes in money and in kind, and now you come for the bones.

It goes about as well as can be hoped. Many people are very upset about their loved ones and ancestors having their rest disturbed. But most people had already come to terms with the idea that you were going to do this and are willing to give you a chance to show those "pro-social uses of necromancy" you had talked about.

Fortunate then, that the first thing you had those skeletons do was build a series of public bathhouses in the villages under your control. Seeing the bones of their ancestors be used to directly improve their lives rather than be turned to whatever fell purposes they might have imagined does much to dissipate unrest and resentment.

[X] Train More Arbitrators 1 dice

You finally have the funds to train and retain enough arbiters to cover the entire republic now that you are collecting taxes from everyone. Things go fairly smoothly.

[X] Attempt to talk to Thane Josef Okrisson 2 die

Dwarves are very hard to talk to. Your people spent so much effort making sure not to give offense that nothing of note actually occurred. Hopefully they'll have learned some stuff about how to talk to Dawi, but for now the relationship is mostly unchanged. Your still "fool manlings" who are on a dangerous path, but not yet enemies.

[X] Scout surroundings. 1 Dice

The Blue Tooth Goblins are indeed moving. They have gotten organized and handed Sinfi her first real loss as Marshal of the Republic. The greenskins had a number of dirty tricks she was unprepared for, especially some nasty skulkers who were built and trained specifically to defeat undead. By the time she realized she needed to focus them down she had already lost too much of her force to recover and she retreated.

Fortunately she managed to raise a new legion of skeletons at the village and defend it successfully. Driving the goblins off from the palisade and then running them down with the ability of skeletons to march all through the night.

The palisade will need repairs however.

[X] Revive Moti (-1 Warpstone) 1 Dice

Vampires, it is well known, are immortal. The Elixer of Life binds the soul into the flesh and bone and supercharges the natural healing of a human being with magic, perfecting it. Given enough time a vampire will heal from any injury, be it a lost arm or old age or even a beheading. They just need to have enough time to absorb the Winds of Magic. Of course, to heal from a beheading takes far longer than to heal from losing an arm than from a mere cut.

It is possible, with the correct tools and materials, to speed this healing process along by providing the winds directly. Most times this is a complicated ritual that needs to symbolically re-enact notable moments of the Vampire's life, which can depend quite a bit on what the vampire has actually done in life. Sinfi, however, has the advantage that she knows Moti's birthday and is his sister, which simplifies things tremendously.

The Revival goes smoothly. Moti, interestingly, has a number of ideas about possible experiments in magical metallurgy.

[-1 Warpstone, +1 Moti]

RUMOR MILL AND EVENTS

Marshal Sinfi Grows in Power

Sinfi spent a significant time in the School this year, wanting to be sure she wouldn't botch her brother's resurrection. This study has paid dividends in other ways as well, with her control over the Winds improving considerably and her mystical might increasing as a direct result.

(Sinfi is now a lvl 2 wizard.)

Jezebel's Territory Disputed

The territory held by Jezebel was left empty and King Isaac and Archbaron Boris pounced on it. They spent most of the year fighting over her former territory and while each has successfully grapped the towns closest to themselves, the center of her territory keeps changing hands by the month.

The War of the Nemesis Crown

It has come out what sort of fell artifact exactly this war started over. Alric the Mad, the runelord who forged the famous Runefangs, had developed a rune of kingship. Yet the rune was too powerful, and no material he tried could hold it… until he tried warpstone. Coming to his senses after he completed the Warpstone Crown he hid it away somewhere in the Middle Mountains. No wonder every skaven on the planet wants to have the Nemesis Crown, no wonder the Empire and the Karaz Ankor seek to have it sealed away forever, and no wonder Zacharias the Everliving has joined the battle seeking to claim it for himself.

Empire Brettonia Relations Continue to Sour.

More Brettonian Knight Errants have gone over into the empire this year, ostensibly to fight the orcs and beastmen while the Empire focuses on the skaven. But the people and nobles of the empire are increasingly unhappy with these heavily armed horsemen in their midst. Emperor Valten has been allegedly called them "little better than bandits".

Tobaro Victorious

The constant mercenary wars in Tilea have had an upset recently as Tobaro's forces have routed all armies that stood against it this year. A new mercenary group is at the core of this and its leader is a person to watch for future greatness.

Next turn, depending on what the legislative wants us to do we should get those flyers up and running, that warpstone is not doing anyone any good just lying there, not when it could be a giant undead monster or two.

Hmm, alright then, guess we're improving farmland and/or making new skeleton Plantations this turn. Standard of living... we did bathhouses last turn, so I guess this one we should do libraries and maybe the Temple?

Aside from that I think our effort should go into improving our military. Raising the Wyverns and maybe outfitting some Black Knights for a cavalry contingent.

Reasoning:
  1. We need this so as not to get surprised, this is more or less standard until we are a lot better protected than we are now
  2. The reason why I am going with more rather than better farms is that it decentralizes things so that one disaster does not see us starve, we can upgrade them all later
  3. Warpstone we are not using is just laying fallow and we do not have enough of it to mess with Gormil, the reason I am going with two beasts and not one is like with the farms is I would prefer to have fliers in more places
  4. Public works to keep the people happy, but also to take advantage of the undead labor to allow more people to actually read and write
  5. I think we should test out those beasties in a raid and not when they are defending something important

The crown is a valuable but incredibly dangerous item. If we were to be in posession it would be incredibly difficult to keep it due to every evil faction wanting it, and we lack the armies needed to make the crown worth our while. Maybe if we have it we just pawn it to the Empire as a show of goodwill.

We could also do the same with the Dawi not only that but the Dawi would actually remember that.

I think we cannot neglect our diplomatic efforts, regardless of the Lukewarm Dwarven reception a land without steady allies is a land surrounded mostly by enemies in waiting, this is a state of affairs best avoided by every possible effort.

I'd be for the plan Dragon Paradox proposes if one die from building the terrorists, or building plantations was put towards courting independent villages.

The reasoning here for most of these has already been given but essentially, improving the lives of those already devoted to our cause and gaining new converts I think is essential. What better way to do that than with direct displays of piety and food?

I know that Quantity is A Quality all it's own but we are no Vashenesh, our armies will be limited by the populations surrounding us and therefore a focus on quality undead troops makes sense to me. What makes even more sense to me is starting that quality from the bottom up because often a force is only as strong as it's weakest members, especially if we say get ambushed by Skaven again.

Neither of these require two dice.

I mean, to be fair, the Nemesis Crown War is over by the Middle Mountains, and your down in the border princes.

[X] Build Libraries 1 Die

Buildings are constructed and books ordered from the merchants. Soon each of the towns in your modest republic have a small library. It's not very impressive by the standards of the big cities of the Empire or Brettonia. Just a few reference books and a bunch of popular stories. But it's a place that people can go to be read to and learn to read and write if they feel the urge to do so.

Some hope that it will eventually lead to widespread literacy, but that day will be a long time off if ever.

-[X] Reanimate Wyverns (-1 Warpstone) 1 Dice
-[X] 2 Terrorgiests

The corpses, carefully prepared against this eventuality, are taken out of storage. The warpstone is implanted in the right spots, and the rituals to reanimate the wyverns as a pair of Terrorgiests are performed.

Now you have fliers.

[X] Crossbow Skeletons? 1 Dice

It takes a while to figure out how to make skeletons shoot a crossbow. It takes longer to teach the others how to do it. By the end of the year you have skeletons that can shoot! Not very well, aiming is complicated and the necromancer in charge of the army only has so much attention to go around.

All that remains is to actually outfit a meaningful force with crossbows.

[X] Set up new Skeleton Plantations 1 Dice
[X] Improve farmland 1 Dice

You set up plantations on land no one is using within your territory to contribute to the grain ration. The land is fairly marginal, but Skeletons don't need to eat and can perform labor all day without caring. A large portion of that labor is making improvements to the land so that the yields aren't too bad.

All in all things go well.

[X] Scout surroundings. 1 Dice

Quite a number of things happened this year. You were raided by Cauldin, Issac, and Boris multiple times each. Fortunately your necromancers were able to beat back the raids with effectively no losses. That said there were a couple of close calls with cows almost being stolen successfully.

Interestingly there is a new power in Jezebel's old territory, who has beaten back Issac and Boris to claim the whole thing. They either are, or have, a wizard who wields the Wind of Death.

The real action however was with the goblins.

[X] Raid Blue Tooth Goblins 1 Dice

You may have left the Blue Tooth fallow for too long. Their numbers are great and they have a canny leader. Fortunately, you have hexwraiths and Terrorgiests. Terror rules the battlefield, and they are very terrifying indeed. Where they go the goblins break.

You have a vast harvest of bones indeed. Yet for all the greenskins you have killed this year very many yet remain. Marshall Sinfi advocates doing a similar series of raids next year to cull their numbers back down to manageable numbers.

News and Events:

Second Principles of Necromancy Published: Moti has been working on the second work in the series on the principles of Necromancy on and off ever since the first was published. It is finally completed. Where the first was a general overview and explained in depth how to use the winds to animate dead bones and tissue, the second goes further into how souls work and how to manipulate them. It is a textbook on how to raise sapient undead, such as ghosts and wights. It repeatedly talks about the ethics of such things, and stresses again and again that one should only make ghosts and wights out of those who consent to the process. He does not explain how to bind sapient undead to ones will, but anyone who understands the theory rather than learning the process by rote will be able to figure it out if they have the desire.

Zacharias has The Crown: Rumor has it that Zacharias the Everliving, master of the Forest of Shadows, has captured the Nemesis Crown for himself. The Skaven have begun assaults into the Forest, but the Empire and Dwarf forces have hesitated, resupplying and reinforcing themselves.

Looks like the gobbos need more culling. Possibly we need to raise more undead.

A wizard of Death, hmm? That might be a problem.

Huh this made me wonder how Fredrick Von Hollenzhern from Dynasty of Dynamic Alcoholism quest would react to us. On one hand he would agree with most of our ideas considering how he started off as an atheist and he also is incredibly egalitarian with the biggest examples are of him opening an engineering school for all genders, creating a fair justice system and removing class restrictions on joining the Bull warriors and it's outright stated that the only reason why he didn't include women too was because the nobles would've revolted. On the other hand he hates necromancers alot and for good reason considering Zacharias strangled one of his children to death, put his wife into a coma and killed most of his province. And while he doesn't like Sigmarites as an organization he does worship More and one of his sons is essentially the Death Pope.

The good thing about culling the goblins is that we also get more bones to raise into undead also facing that death wizard isn't going to be fun.
