Warhammer 40k General thread

There's a rumor - slander really - about 40k, that it has a game; a TABLETOP game.
This is false, as any 40k collector can attest that Warhammer 40k is exclusively a platform for painting and shelving miniatures, and sometimes sharing pictures of the collection online.
NGL there are some real great models out there, almost makes me want to start but then I remember my bank account needs a few more zeroes to really get started.

I would like there to be more Daemons 'Of' Something. Ones with a distinct natures or abilities compared to others of their kind.
Daemons like the Changeling, Sar'tir and Rotigus. All of them are very much embodiments of their respective gods, but also stand out from their peers in terms of their interests and Modus Operandi.

In my opinion, this song very much sounds like something you'd associate with Slaanesh.
And just by using the chorus of that song; this animation portrays a character whom one could imagine as a follower Slaanesh ascending to become the Daemon Prince Of the Internet.

Revisited The Hollow Mountain via Audible. I'd somehow forgotten how grotesque the Chartist Magister is. On top of which, I really appreciate having a story spend some time with perhaps the most-forgotten organisation to be headed by a Lord of Terra.

Is Carrion Throne any good? I'm tempted to read the Watchers of the Throne series first, but Vaults of Terra is written by Chris Wraight.

It's really good, would absolutely recommend reading it first.

It's got a Terry Pratchett influence that's slyly effective, talking about Terra in the way he'd describe Ankh-Morpork but dropping the edge of humour and leaving the sheer, horrific scale.

Yeah, I dunno if its the sculpt, or the paint job but that guy just looks like a complete cartoon...

is it just me but i want a Ciaphas Cain novel where they meet Sisters of Silence and Juergen mights women that are not disgusted by him.

with Cain being able to stomach being in the Sisters presence because of all the time he spends around Juergen. but even then he feels like he needs to throw up.

if i was good at drawing i'd make a comic where Cain is informed Juergen will be taken from him and used as part of a Sisters of Silence breeding program with a very happy Juergen in the back.

which is kind of a rape joke. so maybe not.

Ooh, looks like the same animators who made that 9th edition trailer.

Very curious how the helmet isn't one piece, because I always though that was the case. Maybe the helmet is modular, because Cawl do be like that.

Weird to see the body glove! Yeah, I mean if course there would be one but I didn't think I'd see one. Curiously we don't really see that black carapace like in the Calgar comics, you'd think we'd kinda see it.

Ethically sourced clone winged baby angels, yes.

I clapped when I saw the pauldrons.

I can understand all that pomp and cerimony for high ranking Astartes, like a Chapter Master or Company Captain, but for the rank and file, it seems too elaborated.

Nah, even rank and file marines are meant to be a big deal compared to mere mortals, there is no such thing as too much pomp and ceremony.

And a major draw of 40k is how absurd faction aesthetics can get, Spess Mehreens with more sensible attire would just ruin the magic.

There's no such thing as a rank and file Space Marine. Each Space Marine represents the end product of decades going on centuries of brutal, specialised training. Post-human warriors of legendary stature, each one is the hero of his own story and if he had not become a Space Marine would have surely risen to some esteemed position elsewhere - saint, general, hivelord, gang leader - for he was always ensouled with just such a larger than life fate. The Imperium cannibalises its best and brightest by way of arcane technologies and ritualistic brainwashing to create His Angels of Death. Built for nothing save to destroy His enemies. The Space Marine is one among merely a small band, a thousand brothers each with their own similar story in a galaxy teeming with humanity in its quadrillions. Routinely we are told that for each planet in the Imperium there is but a single Space Marine.

Deployed only to the most treacherous expanses and convoluted battlefronts, a company of Space Marines can be expected to turn the tide of an entire interplanetary siege. A single squad can end in a day a rebellion years in the brewing. As they descend in gleaming ships more advanced, more powerful, and more costly than a fleet of lesser vessels a heretical governer has no choice but to kneel and present his head for execution. An Alien warlord, knowing not of this, may attempt to fight back only to find himself and his personal retinue cut down and his hordes scattered to the winds.

You can kill one with a lucky shot. :V

That's kind of the whole point, Space Marines are the ultimate in extravagant, utterly unjustifiable wastefulness.

Speaking on Spacemarines, is it me or is the Primaris aesthetic made so that the marines look more "heroic"a s opposed to the Firstborn, which have those evil looking helmets?

I don't know more "heroic", but they do look a little more.. tacticool ?

Especially the Primaris Reivers, Infiltrators, Incursors and so on that have a spec-ops aesthetic.

Hell the Reivers even have those skull masks that make me think of Call of Duty: Ghosts or something.

Dunno, I think they look more "heroic" looking especially next to the Firstborn permanent threatening scowl face.

Hang on, I don't think this true.

All the canon I've seen posits that Space Marines are the ultimate warriors. Sure they can die if sufficient firepower is applied to them but if that's enough to make them useless then there are no useful soldiers, the foes the Imperium faces such as the Eldar or Necrons are capable of mulching just about anything if they can hit it with the right weapons. That's not some unique downside of Space Marines, a Guardsman would be far more fucked if in the same position.

Space Marines are far superior qualitatively to any baseline human soldier, that they're extremely expensive and borderline irreplaceable is true but besides the point. They're ultra-special forces, if you want a disposal and cheap force that's what the Imperial Guard is for. When it comes to hitting hard and taking out priority targets the Space Marines are exemplary. Strategically they're absolutely invaluable to the Imperium, they're the furthest from wasteful or unjustified.

And then the setting introduced extra wasteful variants (Grey Knights)
So let me get this straight, it's wasteful to have a Space Marine chapter specialized for fighting Chaos. One of the most dangerous existential threats that exists, arguably only comparably to the Tyranids or fully Awakened Necrons in the threat it can pose to Humanity.

Really?

I'm beginning to wonder if we have radically different definitions of wasteful :V
