Voices From Beyond: A Skullgirls Quest

Marie Gets Ready To Act
[X] Plan: Iddle chatter.
-[X] (Voice 1) "We are glad everything is going well for you Marie. There's still a long way to go, but we are getting there, little by little."
-[X] (Voice 1) "By the way, totally unrelated question. How do you feel about becoming a werewolf maid? If you get the feeling of howling to the skies when it's full moon it's totally normal, trust us."
-[X] (Voice 4) "Yeah kid, just imagine, the arena goes dark, the moonlight shining through the roof as everyone wonders what's happening, then, boom! You jump down from the rafters! Landing on all fours then literally howl a challenge to the champ! It would be glorious!"
-[X] (Voice 2) "Care for some music to pass the time madam?"
May 25th, late morning, Anti-Skullgirl Lab 8

Marie's glad that she really is done answering questions now, because she can't keep a straight face at Myriad's idea. It sounds so funny, and explaining to other people why she's started laughing out of nowhere would be tricky. Fortunately, Marie's by herself in a room she was given, so no one else needs to know about Myriad's idea.

I suppose it's not a bad idea, Marie tells them once she's calmed down. But I don't want to turn into a wolf uncontrollably.

She's got enough problems with being dangerous to everyone around her already, no need to add anymore. As Marie gets to considering what music she'd like to listen to, Dr. Avian comes into her room, anxiety all over his face.

"Have you seen the newspapers?" He asks, getting a confused shake of the head from her.

He thrusts a copy of a local paper at her. NEW SKULLGIRL SIGHTED! KILLS LORENZO MEDICI!, the headline reads.

"I see," is all Marie can say.

"It's not just you," Dr. Avian says. "Everyone who was with you last night is mentioned in the article, and it won't be hard for anyone who knows about Lab 8 to figure out we've got you. Can you pretend you're our prisoner, or do we need to stage your escape?"

Marie thinks it over for a moment.

"Aren't I already your prisoner?" She asks. "I thought you were just being polite about it."

"I suppose you're not wrong," the doctor says with a sigh. "All right, let's get you to a cell, then. We need this to look good for any government officials who want to know what we're doing with a live Skullgirl, and luckily we do have cells that can keep Skullgirls in."

Marie nods and follows Dr. Avian out of the room. As they walk to the cell Marie will be giving her performance in, he coaches her on what she needs to do.

"Keep whatever you say to threats and demands to let you out so you can kill more people, and think about headbutting one of the walls from time to time or something similar. You'll be in a straitjacket. The idea is that you're an ordinary Skullgirl we had the good luck to capture for study and you want to do what Skullgirls usually do."

"Should I pretend to have a moment where I 'snap out of it' and ask whoever's there to kill me?" Marie asks. "It could help explain how you captured me. I surrendered to you before the Skull Heart finished corrupting me, and one last uncorrupted part is still there, trying to make sure I don't hurt anyone else."

Dr. Avian spends a moment thinking before saying, "If you're sure you can do it convincingly. We can't afford to have any weak spots in the act or we'll all be put in front of a firing squad."

Marie nods and doesn't say anything else. Soon enough, Marie's at her cell, getting ready to put on the performance of her life. As a medical person of some kind (Marie doesn't know the right word for this person's job) puts a straitjacket on Marie, one of Lab 8's scientists, a shark Dagonian named Stanley, comes by and takes Dr. Avian aside for a conversation Marie can't overhear. After a few minutes, the two of them head back to the cell, both of them wearing the expression of a man who's jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire.

"Do we need to change the plan?" Marie asks.

"You could say that," Stanley mutters.

"We've just gotten a message that Princess Parasoul's decided to audit ASG Lab 0 starting today," Dr. Avian explains. "That place is enough of a mess we won't need to worry about the government asking us any questions for at least the rest of the year."

"Then why do you look so nervous?" Marie has to ask. Somehow, she knows she won't like the answer.

"How much do you know about Annie of the Stars?" Dr. Avian asks in return.

"The character in the show? I think I've heard that she was based on old stories about a girl who went around saving people from monsters and things like that, and I've watched the show, of course, but that's all," Marie says. What a strange thing to ask about right now.

"They aren't just stories," Stanley says with a grimace. "Annie's real, she's been hunting Skullgirls for longer than any of us have been alive, and she's here."

Marie can see where this is going. There's only one thing she can do now.

"Where do I need to go to talk with her?"

Myriad, how do I get Annie to let me live?

A/N: Of course Annie knows about Lab 8 and where their base is. She knows a lot of professional Skullgirl hunters and where to find them. She probably taught half of them. Also, if you all have interesting and/or funny ideas for how Parasoul's audit of Lab 0 goes, feel free to post them. I'm leaving it vague on purpose right now, but your ideas might influence future events in the story.

Annie Scrutinizes A Weird Skullgirl
[X] Plan: Showtime!
-[X] (voice 4) "ooh boy, quite a pickle we're in, hmmm, ok, so, you're really going to need to put those acting skills to the max kid, so {puts on director's hat} alright people, to their places, we don't get many takes of this so put your game faces on!"
-[X](Voice 4) "Ok Marie, you're the Skullgirl, but not just any Skullgirl, you're one who's willpower and pure heartedness is enough to stave off the corrupting influence of that title! So you really need to show that, let the audience feel your conviction with every word, you're a tortured soul but one who refuses to break! And you will show it to the Hunter who has come to slay you, show her this one in a lifetime chance!"
-[X](Voice 1) "An olive branch to make sure Annie doesn't to kill you is to offer her Double. Annie of the Stars has been chasing that monster as much as she has been hunting Skullgirls. Assist her with killing that blob and she could be an allie."
-[X] (Voice 5) "Be aware that her objective is to truly end the Skullgirl cycle, so her inmortality ends as well. And yes, her inmortality was the result of a wish to the Skullheart made by her mother a long time ago. Obviously, don't mention this, this was to give you more context about her. "
-[X](Voice 4) "Also we hear you, you don't want to be a werewolf due to the whole uncontrollable transformation thing, so how about this, we give you the senses of a wolf, and you Shapeshift into a werewolf form! Best of both worlds eh?"
-[X](Myriad) "Ladies and gentlemen, it's... SHOWTIME!"
-[X]

May 24th, late morning, somewhere in Anti-Skullgirl Lab 8

Myriad's right, all Marie has to do is put the problem in acting terms. Her objective? Convince Annie to let her live, simple enough. The actions she'll do to achieve that objective? That's the hard part. Marie will have to figure that out as she goes. Oh, there's the door to the room Annie's waiting in. Marie's nervous, a bit starstruck, and pessimistic about her chances of survival. If she makes that clear with her voice and body language, it could persuade Annie that Marie really does want to avoid a fight. That could be a foot in the door, and then she can offer Annie information or an alliance. All right, nothing left but to give the performance of a lifetime. Showtime.

The Skullgirl walks in the room and sits down at the table across from Annie. She looks nervous and... sad. Like she doesn't expect things to go well but feels like she needs to try anyway. It's an expression Annie sees in the mirror pretty often.

"Thank you for agreeing to talk with me, Miss Annie," she says. "It's an honor to meet you, even though..."

The Skullgirl gestures vaguely, but it's obvious she means even though you're probably going to kill me.

Annie leans forwards just a bit. She's taller than this Skullgirl, which doesn't happen often, and she's going to use the height advantage for intimidation while she can.

"Let's skip the pleasantries. You're a Skullgirl, I hunt Skullgirls. The only reason we're having a conversation is because you convinced three people I know are dedicated anti-Skullgirl fighters that you weren't a threat. One or two I could write off, but now it's a pattern. So keep the pattern going with me or only one of us is walking out of this room."

And it won't be you goes unsaid, but Annie's tone makes the implication clear.

The Skullgirl sighs and just looks down. She doesn't say anything for long enough that Annie's almost ready to call it quits and start stabbing when she finally does speak.

"I- I don't know how. With Mister Ben, my friend Patricia convinced him to give me a chance to prove I wasn't going to kill everyone I could see, and I think Ms. Ileum was mostly following his lead. With Squigly and Leviathan, I found a magic gem that let them stop being zombies, so now they like me because I helped them. You've never met me before, Miss Annie, or any of my friends, and there isn't anything I could do to help you."

The Skullgirl stops talking for a moment, then she gets a look on her face. It's hopeful, but it's the hope of someone who's certain they'll be disappointed but can't let go of that hope.

"Is there something I could do to help you?" She asks. It's earnest, painfully so. Either the Skullgirl's a better actor than Annie, who's been doing it for longer than this Skullgirl's been alive, or she really does want to help Annie somehow, and not just because it would save her skin.

Annie puts a hand to her face in a pose of deep contemplation, even though she knows perfectly well what she wants out of this Skullgirl. If she wants to live, she needs to offer Annie something really good, and there's not much she can offer that'd qualify. Once she's pretended to think long enough, Annie asks her question.

"What makes you different? Why are you the one Skullgirl who's not killing everyone she can see?"

The Skullgirl opens and closes her mouth a few times without speaking. Whatever she wants to say, she's having trouble with the words.

"When I made a wish on the Skull Heart," she eventually says. "I was desperate for help, and it was offered to me. If I was even a bit less desperate, I wouldn't have done it. When I could think properly again, I promised myself that I would only kill people who deserved it. And I keep my promises. It lets me spite the... creature that took advantage of my helplessness and tried to turn me into her own personal murder machine. Every day, every hour, every moment I keep myself from letting the bloodlust win is another slap in her gooey, shapeshifting face."

If she'd said anything about being a kind soul who didn't want to hurt anyone, Annie wouldn't believe it. But channeling her impulses into something narrow and... not harmless but at least less of a problem, along with wanting to spite the darned creature that's the true master of the Skull Heart? That, Annie can buy. She does something similar, after all.

Okay, maybe this one Annie can just keep an eye on instead of going for the jugular right away. She's in the middle of an Anti-Skullgirl Lab, so if she does let the bad thoughts win, there won't be much collateral damage. Lab 8's full of softies, but they're not stupid. They're gonna have a thousand countermeasures ready for that scenario. And if they don't, Annie'll make sure they fix that little oversight real quick.

"You asked if you could help me," Annie says after thinking for a while. "There's a couple things I'd like from you."

"Of course, Miss Annie," the Skullgirl says. "What are they?"

"First," Annie counts on her fingers. "You cooperate with the scientists here on figuring out how to get rid of the Skull Heart for good. Or at least finding a way to get it out of Skullgirls easily so they don't have as much of a chance to cause big disasters. Whatever tests or experiments they wanna do on you, cooperate."

Annie holds out a hand to prevent any interruptions and says, "Sure, maybe you're gonna stay in control until something happens to kill you. Maybe. But the next Skullgirl? Or the one after that? The world needs a way to keep the damage from Skullgirl attacks down. And you're the best research subject for that anyone's ever gonna get. You want me to believe I don't need to do anything about you? Help out with minimizing how much of a problem you and the ones after can be."

The Skullgirl nods, looking more resigned than anything. Annie continues.

"Second, you're going to tell me what you know about that shapeshifter who gave you the Skull Heart. I've been after her for ages, and I'm not passing up a chance to get the info I need to put her down for good. You said you wanted to spite her, here's your big chance."

The Skullgirls nods again, not quite eager but a bit more than just determined. Good, she might actually be honest here.

"And number three: I need a new sparring partner, and hey, I hunt Skullgirls, and here's one who says she's friendly. I could stand to get some practice in when it's not do or die."

"That... sounds like you want to get my guard down and kill me in an 'accident.' I don't know if I can do that one," the Skullgirl says. And the kid's actually got a brain in her head, maybe she really is making her own decisions.

"Caught me there," Annie says with a chuckle. "But hey, you just said no to someone who's been threatening to kill you. If you want me to believe you've got what it takes to stay peaceful out of spite, that's not bad evidence."

Now that the kid's gone through a secret test of character and shown she has some guts, Annie can believe she might actually keep herself under control. And when a grizzled veteran like Annie gets brought around to thinking maybe a kid's got what it takes, you know the kid definitely has it.

"Oh, maybe we can compromise," the kid says. "My friend Patricia thinks that when the scientists here have finished operating on her, she'll be able to get the Skull Heart out of me without killing me. If she's right, I'd be happy to be your sparring partner once she finishes helping me. I know a few things about how to fight."

Getting cured of Skullgirl-hood is a long shot, but so's a Skullgirl turning out peaceful. Annie's finding that right now, she's willing to take a chance on another long shot.

"You know, kid," she says. "I really should come by every so often and make sure you're being good. If you let me see you in action against someone else, and your friend really can do what she says, I just might take you up on that offer."

For the first time that Annie's seen, the kid smiles.

"Of course, Miss Annie," she says, excitement in her voice. "I look forward to us seeing each other again, then."

"We're not saying goodbye just yet," Annie says. "We still need to have a conversation about our shapeshifting friend."

That takes the smile off the kid's face. Annie almost feels bad. Almost.

"Oh yes, her," the kid says. "What do you want to know about her?"

Annie grins viciously and says, "Everything."

A/N: Congratulations, you got Annie off Marie's back! Well, mostly. She was never gonna become friends with Marie just like that, but your advice to Marie meant that she used a framework (emphasize willpower and refusing to break, point to Double as a common enemy) that Annie would find more persuasive. It's a good thing too, because if Marie did get in a fight with Annie, Marie would experience the old "Current Objective: Survive" meme. Also, Ileum wasn't just following Big Band's lead in deciding to give Marie a chance, but Marie doesn't know that. And the references to actions and objectives at the start is something I got from what I was able to find about the theory behind naturalistic acting. It seemed like something Johnny Cage would be at least a bit familiar with if he's a good enough actor to be a big Hollywood star. Lastly, there will probably be just one more main story post from me today if there's one at all. My wrists are starting to bother me from all this typing, so I need to take a short break from writing big long posts.

Is There Double Among Us?
[X] Plan: Blob Briefing
-[X] (Voice 4) "annnnd scene! Good job everyone, we got it in one take, send it to editing and take five, I'll be in my trailer..."
-[X] (Voice 1) "About that Blob Double...well, make sure to tell every detail you can remember. Telling her that you last saw her on the Meridian Grand Cathedral working as a nun would be a good idea. Also...not sure if we told you before, but Double can sense the Skullheart, so she can keep track of you at all times...Sorry if we forgot to tell you that."
-[X] (Voice 2) "Be careful Madam, she could easily pass as anyone and sneak inside this place, be careful."
-[X] (Voice 1) "Tell her that Double was weirdly focused on making you kill people, her aim is to make Skullgirls kill the most amount of lives possible for her goals."
May 25th, approaching noon, a room in Anti-Skullgirl Lab 8

Marie is... not surprised that Double can tell where Marie is through tracking the Skull Heart, but she'd admit that it hadn't occurred to her yet to put those pieces together herself. Marie wasn't that close to the Meridian Grand Cathedral when Double found her, but the monster didn't seem to have a very hard time tracking her. That's definitely something she has to tell Annie right now.

"Well," she says. "I just realized that she has some way to find where I am when she wants to meet with me. And now that I've killed Lorenzo Medici, she does want to meet with me."

Annie goes from grinning to stone-faced in an instant.

"Shoot."

It's clear she means a very different word.

"What else can you tell me fast?" Annie asks.

Marie doesn't even need a moment to think.

"She likes to disguise herself as a nun, she seems to like hiding in the Meridian Grand Cathedral, and I'm pretty sure she wants me to kill as many people as possible. You probably know more about her shapeshifting than I do."

Annie nods at that and says, "Really good at impersonations, I remember her take on my parents better than my actual parents, and way too tough. The only times I've won a fight with her she was trying to mess with me. And she's at least as old as I am, probably older, so she's got me beat on experience."

"We... we should make sure we can trust each other," Marie realizes. "We don't know if she's already here or not. Even if we can only trust each other not to be Double, that's better than nothing."

"Huh, so that's her name." Annie mutters to herself. "I know you're the real Skullgirl. I've seen the- Double impersonate Skullgirls before, she always copies what they look like before they made a wish. So how are you sure I'm actually Annie?"

Marie takes a moment to look over the girl across from her. And then, she notices something that puts her mind at ease.

"You have Sagan with you," she says. "And he's standing a few feet away from you. He's not a part of your body. Double pretending to be Annie wouldn't have Sagan with her, or the fake Sagan would be connected to her somehow. I've never seen Double split herself up, at least."

"I haven't either," Annie says. "It'll have to do."

Annie stands up and jerks her head to the room's door.

"We need to get moving," she says. "We're sitting ducks for Double in here."

"You're right," Marie says, standing up. "Let's get moving."

Then, Marie remembers something.

Myriad, you said you could give me a sense of smell like a wolf's. Can you do that now?

A/N: I'll give you this for free, Annie's not a fake. Since I wrote most of the last story post from her perspective, it would be too dishonest of me if I turned around and said "actually that was Double pretending to Annie." Marie's reason for trusting Annie is inspired by the fact that Double generally isn't seen splitting herself into totally separate pieces outside of a few in-game attacks or when she's in Gehenna. I'm taking this to mean that it's very hard for Double to do it, so she prefers not to. And so Sagan, being a Remote Parasite, is something Double wouldn't want to impersonate if she didn't have to, and there's plenty of people besides Annie who Double could imitate in order to infiltrate Lab 8. As for Annie trusting Marie, she's just run into Double enough times over the centuries that she's developed an intuition for how Double prefers to disguise herself (and since impersonating a Skullgirl in their Skullgirl form would include imitating the Skull Heart, Double could consider it too difficult, sacrilegous, or both). And if you all agree on a specific fighting game werewolf to get enhanced senses from, I'll let you give them to Marie in time for the next story post.

Marie And Annie Sneak Around
[X] Plan: Blob hunting!
-[X] (Voice 4) "one set of senses coming right up kid! Careful near the perfume stores at malls, they're killer on the nose even for normal folks!"
-[X] (Voice 1) "Be careful, Marie, there's no guarantee that Double has infiltrated the place already…but also nothing to confirm that she hasn't."
May 25th, approaching noon, Anti-Skullgirl Lab 8

Marie half-expected that her sense of smell suddenly improving would overwhelm her with all the new information, but it seems Myriad's gift included the ability to handle smelling everything around her. Huh, Annie smells like coffee. That could be helpful if Double does try to impersonate her.

The two girls walk around the Lab, eyes and ears kept sharp for any hint of their hidden foe. As they do, in between giving vague summaries of their meeting to the people they pass by ("we realized we had enough in common to get along" and similar things), Marie and Annie find opportunities to speak with each other.

"Miss Annie, what if Double isn't already here? Her nun disguise might be a cover she has to keep up. She could be in the middle of church work right now."

"Just Annie's fine, kid. And yeah, that's possible, but she'll have to do something about you eventually, and in my experience she's not a fan of putting things off."

"Some time today, then?"

"Probably. I wish we could take whatever she's following and put it somewhere else, but we don't know how Double can... find you..."

"Annie?"

Annie stops dead in her tracks, Marie following suit a moment later. What could she be thinking about?

Annie turns to face Marie and says, "I think I know how she's tracking you, and if I'm right there should be a way to get her off the scent. Come on, we need to find Squigly and Leviathan, he'll know if I'm right."

Annie takes off again, Marie following close behind. It takes several minutes of looking around, but eventually the two pairs meet up.

Nothing about Squigly or Leviathan seems off (though Marie has to remind Annie about their revival when she first sees them), but Marie and Annie are both too on edge to relax just yet. They're so on edge that it's obvious to the pair of girl and Parasite something's up.

"Are you two okay?" Squigly asks. "I mean, I'm glad you're not fighting, but you both look like a Skullgirl's chasing you. Oh, whoops. Sorry, Marie!"

"It's fine," Marie tells her.

"We need a way to hide Marie from the Skull Heart's real master," Annie says to Leviathan, whose expression hardens at her words.

"Oh yes, her," he says. "I take it you want me to disrupt Marie's connection to the Skull Heart? I'd be happy to, but I could only do that for Squigly because its hold on her was never very strong. And regardless of that, it would kill Marie. Her body couldn't survive without it as she is now."

"That's not what I was gonna ask," Annie tells him. "But good to know. I wanted to ask if bottling up the energy it gives off would keep Marie hidden."

Leviathan puts the tip of his tail up to his face as his brows furrow in thought.

Eventually, he says, "It might, if that's what the witch would use to find her. If there were some more mystical method at play, stopping it could be as easy or as difficult as you can imagine."

"That's about what I figured," Annie says. "Thanks."

"Certainly," Leviathan tells her. "Good luck with hiding Marie from her gaze."

The four exchange farewells and split up. Marie and Annie wait for a few minutes, but Double doesn't suddenly shed a disguise and attack.

"Okay, either those were the real ones or she's playing the long game," Annie says.

"I think they were real," Marie says. "I'm pretty sure she wouldn't know they're not undead anymore. Even if the newspapers mentioned Squigly, it was dark enough when we fought Black Dahlia that you couldn't tell if she was a zombie if you didn't already know."

"So Double wouldn't get any clue that something had changed," Annie says, finishing the train of reasoning. "Let's hope you're right. We don't have anything better to try than bottling up the Skull Heart's energy, so if Double's trying to put us on a wild goose chase, we're done for."

Something about Annie's words rings a bell for Marie. Geese, no, birds... Project Peacock! The program Patricia's in!

"There might be something else," Marie says. "The anti-Skullgirl weapons my friend Patricia's going to be given, she says they'll 'blast' me like a raygun. Could they do something to the Skull Heart's energy? Cancel it out or turn it into a different kind Double can't follow?"

"Couldn't tell ya," Annie says with a shrug. "But one of the scientists here probably could, if we can find a real one."

Annie blinks in surprise at her own words, then facepalms with a groan.

"What's wrong?" Marie asks.

"We need a real one," Annie says. "And there's one Double."

Marie can't help but facepalm too. How could they have forgotten? If they find a group of people, they can't all be fakes, because Double doesn't split into pieces.

"Let's find where everyone has lunch," Annie says. "It has to be lunch time by now, there's gonna be a ton of people in their break room or whatever. There's gotta be someone who'll have our answers."

That would explain how empty this particular spot in the Lab is if the staff are busy eating. Marie nods in agreement to the plan, and the two set off to find their prize.

Thanks to a few "lucky guesses" from Marie that are actually her following the smell of food, it doesn't take long to find a cafeteria. And Annie was right, there's a lot of scientists, medical staff, field operatives, and other assorted people milling around the room. Finding the right person won't be easy.

Marie looks at Annie and asks, "How are we going to get help?"

Annie smirks and says, "I told you, there's only one of her and a whole lot of people in here."

Annie puts a hand to her mouth and shouts, "HEY EVERYONE!"

All eyes in the room turn to Annie. Everyone here knows what her voice sounds like, and enough people in the Anti-Skullgirl Labs know the truth about Annie that nobody really questions why Annie of the Stars has shown up.

"You all know you've got the Skullgirl here?" Annie gestures to Marie, who gives a hesitant wave, not sure how to act in this situation.

Everyone nods.

"Well," Annie continues. "She's got a shapeshifter after her who can follow the energy the Skull Heart gives off. The shapeshifter wants the Skullgirl in her clutches and doesn't care who gets in her way, so she's a problem. We don't know if she's already here or not, but there's only one of her, so we're asking you all together now: how do we hide the Skullgirl?"

Everyone in the audience starts muttering, whether to themselves or to someone else in the crowd.

"Don't be shy now!" Annie says. "If our shapeshifter's here, she's gonna try to trick us! If you hear any bad ideas, call them out!"

That makes the discussions more intense, and there are a few occasions where Marie or Annie needs to keep people from coming to blows. Eventually, though, a consensus develops around two ideas being the most likely options: either Marie can wear clothes made out of special materials that can absorb the Skull Heart's energy, or she can let herself be bombarded by "Z-rays," which will be used by the weapons for Project Peacock, every so often to dampen the Skull Heart's energy and make it so there's less for Double to detect altogether. The scientists can't agree on which option would be more likely to work, though, and they can't do both simultaneously. One option will have to buy time for the Lab to get the other one ready.

"What do you think, Annie?" Marie asks quietly.

"This isn't my wheelhouse," Annie says with a shrug. "You might as well flip a coin."

Marie isn't going to flip a coin. She has something better.

Myriad, what do you think?

A/N: I'll admit that doing a take on The Thing when I haven't designed the quest around the concept wasn't a very good idea. If this part of the story is boring for you all, I'm very sorry. I'm going to do my best to get this particular arc resolved as well as I can and then give you all some downtime to hang out with the different characters and do some more long-term planning and so on. After all, if Marie has a way to avoid detection from Double to go with her ability to avoid detection from normal people, then she can better afford to relax a bit. Also, this will be the last story post for today. Please bear with me for just a bit longer, and hopefully I can the quest to more interesting and fun territory soon.

Black Dahlia Wants To Try Again
May 25th, around noon, a safe house in New Meridian

It's strange to see Black Dahlia looking like anything but an invincible force of nature, but Vitale Medici is now one of a select few to witness such a thing. If there existed any sympathy within him, he might say she even looks a touch pitiable now. Her legend has existed for so long that even he had started to believe on some level that she couldn't be harmed, and perhaps she believed it too. But the stump where an arm should be has put an end to that legend.

"Explain to me," he tells her. "Why I should help you replace your arm and let you chase after the Skullgirl. And I will remind you that if I am not convinced you aren't a liability, it won't be difficult at this moment to write you off."

Vitale does nothing so unsubtle as gesture or even glance at the enforcers standing near his desk. He has no need to. Black Dahlia may be a mad dog, but she isn't stupid.

The woman attempts to cross her arms over her chest, only to remember that she has a single arm now and scowl.

"Isn't it obvious?" She says. "You need to remind the world that the Medicis aren't weak. Send me to kill the girl who killed Lorenzo, and you send a message to everyone who thinks they can try something."

Like all the people who want your throne, she leaves implied. Vitale raises an eyebrow at her words.

"The girl who killed my father then sent you running? That girl?" He asks. "I have no interest in sending the message that I rely on you even for things you've already failed at."

Black Dahlia visibly bristles at that and takes a moment to master herself before saying, "And a single spot of bad luck means I've failed? I couldn't know the Skullgirl would electrocute me, they don't do that."

"And now that you are aware of that little ability," Vitale asks. "How do you plan to kill this Skullgirl? I know you won't do something sensible like blow her brains out with a sniper rifle from half a mile away."

"Get my prosthetics insulated, for one thing," Dahlia says. "And after that, well, I've got a chainsaw arm I've been saving for a rainy day. I'd like to see the Skullgirl try and blow that up with her electric punches."

"It would send a message to leave the Skullgirl in pieces," Vitale says, a hand on his chin. "But if I allow this, you'll come back with the Skullgirl's head or not at all, do you understand me?"

Black Dahlia laughs mirthlessly and says, "Oh, Vitale, I thought you could tell. This Skullgirl didn't chase me down. She killed Lorenzo, but not you or your floozy. Her body count's still in the single digits. She's denying her bloodlust, her nature, and that makes her weak. And in this world, the strong kill while the weak get killed."

The woman pauses and clenches her fist.

"I let her friends get in the way last time because I thought the soft touches at Lab 8 wouldn't matter. This time, I'll make sure it'll just be me and the Skullgirl, one-on-one."

The expression on her mask turns into an even more vicious grin than usual.

"Kill or be killed."

This woman, Vitale thinks and not for the first time, is completely insane.

But I can use her madness.

Either Black Dahlia successfully kills the Skullgirl and eliminates a threat, or she dies to the Skullgirl... and eliminates the threat of herself. This woman's particular brand of insanity makes her a useful assassin, but it also makes her the single greatest cause of feuds between the Medici Family and other organizations. And Vitale knows that for a fact, he keeps track of these things. Whoever dies in a fight between Black Dahlia and the Skullgirl, the Medici Family will benefit.

"Very well," Vitale says. "How long will you need to get ready?"

"How long will you need to find a few technicians who can work on my limbs and all the rubber they ask for?" Dahlia asks.

Vitale takes a moment to think before saying, "At least two weeks for the technicians, possibly three. The rubber shouldn't be more than a day, if that."

"There's your answer," Dahlia says. "These procedures aren't complicated, I just can't do them myself."

"I see," Vitale says. "I'll send you word when we've got your technicians."

Black Dahlia nods at the implied dismissal and makes her exit. The moment she's out of sight, Vitale lets out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. Whether or not that woman kills the Skullgirl, she'll certainly be the death of him.

A/N: Black Dahlia definitely wants a rematch, but you've got a while before she'll come after Marie, so downtime's still happening once the current mini-arc finishes. Dahlia does actually have a chainsaw in her concept art, along with a flamethrower. The concept art actually has both of those weapons and her gun all as different parts of the same prosthetic arm, in what seems to be a cartoony "one thing retracts into the arm and a different thing pops out" system. Since in-game Dahlia only has the gun on her arm, I've decided to treat the three different arm weapons as entirely separate arms she can swap between.

Marie Gets A Break
[X] Plan: Anti Double Measures Advice
-[X] (Voice 1): "It's a tought choice Marie. The clothes could be a better option, but might limit the use of your shapeshifting and you would need to be careful of not damaging them during a fight, depending how tought they are."
-[X] (Voice 1) "On the other hand, the "Z-Rays" thing, might even weaken you a bit as they reduce the Skullhearts energy, but we aren't fully certain of this."
-[X](Voice 4) "Hmm, I don't know kid, we don't really know what those science beams of theirs will do to you, I say it's better to wear the clothes, but it's your choice."
May 25th, around noon, Anti-Skullgirl Lab 8

Maybe Marie should've expected that Myriad wouldn't be any more sure of what to do than she is. Magic is infamous for being complicated, and the Skull Heart is some of the most complicated magic anyone studies. But the mention of shapeshifting has reminded Marie that she still hasn't told anyone that she can do that, and mentioning that ability right after warning the people in Lab 8 about an evil shapeshifter would... probably go poorly. So if shapeshifting isn't an option for now, then energy-absorbing clothing is probably the way to go.

Once all of Lab 8's top staff are brought together to make sure they know about the problem of Double and the proposed solution (and Annie has to sheepishly explain why she kept that secret to herself for so long; there isn't a long and uncomfortable conversation about Annie's mistakes, but Marie is sure Annie's in for one soon), it takes another few hours before Marie's new outfit is ready, mostly thanks to the security measures everyone needs to follow to prevent Double from sabotaging things. The Lab has stockpiles of several different materials known to have anti-Skullgirl properties, so most of the work is finding one that can be made into something Marie can wear without any issues.

Once everything's ready and Marie puts on the... armor (she isn't sure what the right word is), she feels something change. Not in her body, but in her mind. The connection between her and the spirits of the dead, one she hadn't entirely noticed before, has become muted, while the whispers of the Skull Heart become just a bit louder. Trying to get her to take the armor off, telling her to find it uncomfortable, telling her it isn't necessary, and a dozen other things in that vein. Marie ignores the whispers. The rock can offer her nothing she wants now, just opportunities to practice self-control. Unnoticed, a janitor elsewhere in Lab 8 frowns and vanishes. The Skull Heart has disappeared, and it must be found again.

"How do you feel, Marie?" Dr. Avian asks her.

"The Skull Heart wants me to take the armor off," Marie tells him. "Does that mean it's working?"

"We aren't getting any signal from it on our equipment," Stanley says. "I think we can call this a success."

Cheers break out at that, and some tension in Marie relaxes. They've done it. Double can't track her down. Unless the monster has already caught sight of her, she's safe.

"So what're you gonna do now?" Annie asks her.

That... is a good question. Marie has a lot of things she'd like to do, but they're all things that can't be taken care of quickly. She's gotten some justice from the Medici Family, found Patricia, gotten out of Double's control, and even made some new friends, to say nothing of meeting the actual Annie of the Stars. Eventually, she'll need to finish things with Black Dahlia and Double, since she can't relax while either monster still has it out for her, and spending time with her friends has to take a long time by definition, as will watching the Medici Family collapse in infighting. The only thing she can really say is a thing she'll do next is...

"I want to watch Beowulf's comeback tour," Marie says. "Would you like to join me?"

"No thanks," Annie says flatly. "I don't really get along with him."

"That's a shame," Marie says. "Since you said you wanted to 'check up on me' sometimes, I thought it would be nice if we could do something fun together when we meet again. I'll have to think of something else."

"Don't worry about it, kid," Annie tells her. "I don't have a lot of hobbies, I'm too busy with work."

"Isn't your job hunting Skullgirls?" Marie asks. "If you don't need to hunt me, you'll have more free time. Maybe we can look together for something you'd have fun with."

"These days, it's my hobby," Annie says, looking a bit grumpy. "I have to make appearances in public to remind people about my shows, film the TV show, record for the radio show, write for both... Don't get into showbiz, kid. It'll eat all your time with crud you won't care about."

Annie writes her own shows? She really is a girl of many talents. But that does remind Marie of something that's been bothering her about Annie's shows for a while.

"Miss Annie," she starts. "Since you write your shows, would you answer a question about them for me?"

"Sure," Annie says with a shrug. "I don't get a whole lot of questions about the behind-the-scenes process from kids, this'll be different."

Marie gets the feeling that Annie's really bored with her work on her shows.

"For the last couple seasons, I haven't been enjoying your shows as much as I used to," Marie tells her. "Did something about the writing change, or am I just getting too old for them?"

"How old are you, kid?" Annie asks.

"I'll be turning 13 soon," Marie says.

"You're definitely not too old, then," Annie says, brows starting to furrow. "But now that I'm thinking about it, the writers have been phoning it in, and that probably includes me too, with how much I've been hating the job lately. It's a good thing the season hasn't wrapped yet, we haven't started working on the next one..."

Annie stares at nothing in particular, muttering things Marie can't be hearing clearly. Why would Annie be talking about a "coffee table monster?" After a few minutes, she stops muttering and looks at Marie again.

"Thanks for telling me about this," Annie says. "If kids don't like the show, they won't pay attention to what we're trying to teach them. And that'd just make it all pointless, so I, uh, I owe you one."

"You're welcome," Marie says, out of reflex more than anything. She doesn't feel like she's done anything worth thanking. Annie would have noticed the problem even without her saying anything, wouldn't she?

"I'd better get going," Annie says. "I need to get on some people about making the show better. I'll be seeing you... Marie, right?"

"Yes," Marie says with a nod. "And goodbye to you too, Miss Annie."

Soon enough, Annie's gone, and Marie's left to her own devices, at least as much as Lab 8 will allow her to be. Eventually, she goes back to the room she's been given to lie in bed and just let herself relax for a bit. There's no rush now, she can take some time to just... not... do anything...

Soon, the sound of snoring fills the air as, for the first time in far too long, Marie drifts off to sleep.

A/N: Downtime arc, begin! I'll be doing my best to give you all some time to do more long-term planning, have fun with some of the characters that've already been introduced, or anything else you feel like. Right now, Marie's mainly waiting for Peacock to get her operations so they can try blasting the Skull Heart out of Marie, and that's going to take a while. Also, Annie took Marie telling her "hey your show kind of fell off" seriously because the whole point of the show is to teach people not to use the Skull Heart, and the current Skullgirl, who's clearly been watching it for a long time, has just told Annie that it didn't teach her the intended lesson well enough. That and the whole thing with Double right before mean that Annie's open to rethinking how she's doing things. Like with Parasoul's investigation of Lab 0, I'm leaving Annie's work fixing her show vague for right now, so if anyone has ideas for what that might be like, feel free to share them!

Skullgirls & Symbiotes
Now I'm curious on what a Valentine negaverse would look like, especially once Marie brings out her new move and power.
Not quite a Negaverse but something fun regardless.

Skullgirls & Symbiotes
GM: As you look around the place the Theonite detectors last went off you see a long figure approaching the MART station and attached trainyard.

Valentine: Can we roll Perception to see if it's the Skullgirl?

GM: Sure. Low DC, but details will be limited as the figure is still a bit away.

*The Party Rolls*

GM: You see the newest Skullgirl, dressed in a maid outfit, she looks young. She will be close enough to detect you soon. What do you do?

Christmas: Right, is there any cover around?

GM: There's some trees around and maybe some scattered bushes but nothing too substantial, perhaps a dirt mound near the perimeter road.

Hallow: But I thought we were in a trainyard? Shouldn't there be more cover, like cargo or unused train cars?

GM: No, the Skullgirl is heading towards the trainyard but not quite there yet, remember, you detected them on approach. Do you want to head there for the better cover?

Easter: We could, but that would mean that the Skullgirl would also have access to cover, and more importantly, the trains. So we might just have to make do.

Patty: Yeah, that is a major intersection, so she could use it to go anywhere. Especially if we lose her in there. I vote we try to deal with this out here.

Hallow: The lack of cover sucks but the risk of the Skullgirl escaping is worse.

Christmas: At least there is still some cover, instead of none. I say we stay, Val?

Valentine: No objections from me. Stealth rolls?

GM: If you're sure. Unknown DC for hiding.

*Everyone Rolls*

Valentine: Shit, low roll, at least I still have a decent modifier. Everyone else rolled great though.

GM: Okay... Everyone finds cover a bit off the Skullgirls path, except for you Valentine, the tree you picked is unfortunately directly over her path. You hold your breath as the Skullgirl gets closer and closer, before the she stops just before Valentine's tree. She appears to be really thin, like she hasn't eaten in a while, almost corpselike. *Rolls dice* She tilts her head as if listening to someone. What do you do?

Valentine: Well, it appears that my cover is blown. But she might not realise that the rest of you are there. We should be able to get a surprise round against her while she is off guard. Especially if I distract her, by jumping out of the tree, that way I can start within 5 feet of the Skullgirl and give the rest of us Advantage.

Easter: The malnutrition should also give us an advantage in the fight. Valentine might even be able to convince the Skullgirl that we are just hunger hallucinations.

Hallow: We can also use the opportunity to ready ourselves attack for Advantage when rolling Initiative if the GM lets us.

Patty: Everyone rolls for Initiative, but holds their turn until Valentine goes, I can work with this. Call it in while Valentine distracts her Christmas?

Christmas: Sure. While Valentine does her thing I radio back to HQ "I've got eyes on her, out in the open and heading to the MART station. We'll intercept before she gets there." Then I prepare to attack.

Valentine: I jump out of cover and in front of the Skullgirl what do I see?

GM: Are you sure you want to do that?

Valentine: Well my cover's blown anyway, so might as well use myself as distraction for the others.

GM: Alright then... Roll for Initiative everyone, and yes you all get Advantage. *Some rolls and organization later* As specified Valentine goes first.

Valentine: I move to within 5 feet of the Skullgirl, and then attempt a distraction with the Help action. How does it go?

GM: Right... you jump out in front of the Skullgirl in an attempt to distract her and set up your allies. Getting close enough to count her ribs, her exposed ribs.

Patty: You already said she hadn't eaten in a while. That's not new.

GM: I don't mean exposed like her ribcage is visible through her skin. I mean exposed as in, the Skullgirl is an undead that is missing most of her spine. So everyone needs to roll for Legendary Action Fearful Presence, Valentine gets disadvantage for literally seeing the Skullgirl's bones.

Valentine: And I just put myself in melee. Fuck.

*Everyone Rolls, the dice are middling, except Valentine's, she gets both a natural 20 and a natural 1*

GM: Everyone fails, and gets the Frightened condition. Valentine, while the Nat 20 is great, Disadvantage means we go with the lower of the two, the Nat 1 means you are also Stunned until the end of your turn. The Skullgirl goes next, she looks you up and down and says "Don't you all get cold in outfits like that?"

Christmas: But Hallow and Patty were only one point behind Valentine in initiative, and we all rolled well.

Easter: And what about Valentine's distraction?

GM: Technically, the Skullgirl tied with both of them for initiative, and had a higher modifier than both of them combined, so that means she goes first. Also, that was the Skullgirl's entire turn. I just declared that the distraction succeeded using GM fiat, also I am ruling that due to that the effects of Frightened don't apply for this turn. I suggest running. Hallow?

Hallow: Can I make a distraction as well? So that Valentine has time to run? She's still stunned right?

GM: Unfortunately yes, but the Skullgirl has dismissed her as an active threat so won't attack her if any of you successfully do anything threatening. Yes, successful attacks count as distractions in this case.

Hallow: Then I use my action to attack the Skullgirl, then move to a better piece of cover. *Rolls dice*

GM: You missed, the Skullgirl uses her Legendary Action to attack you back. She catches the syringe and attempts to throw it back at you, with Disadvantage for the unfamiliar weapon. *Rolls Dice* Your cover means that she misses your AC by one despite her bonuses and it rips up your sleeve instead. Patty?

Patty: I want to go up to the Skullgirl and attempt a trip action. It would make running away easier for Valentine.

GM: ...The GM asks 'Are You Sure?'

Patty: Not really, but what else can we do? Hallow was the only one of us with a ranged attack, and I'm not leaving Valentine out there with the Stunned condition to take the Skullgirl's attack alone. This is also the only round in which we can get closer to Valentine given the Frightened condition and the fact that she is standing next to the Skullgirl. Might as well so something useful while I'm there. So, yes, I am doing this.

GM: *Sighs* Okay then, make your roll.

Patty: *Rolls dice* And given it's lower than Hallow's, that's a miss. I assume that I'm being hit with a Legendary Action Attack?

GM: Yeah. *Rolls dice* That's a hit. First successful attack from the Skullgirl this combat. Now for damage. *Rolls more dice*

Christmas: Holy crap, that's a lot of dice. That's as many as me when I crit, and that's the entire point of my combat build.

GM: Well, you were the ones who decided to fight the endgame boss despite the warnings. And I think that is the same number as Patty's entire HP pool.

Patty: Yep, it is. Reduces me to zero exactly. I'm down?

GM: I'll just say that when you bring your IV pole down to sweep the leg the Skullgirl slams it down sending the other end straight into your jaw, giving you a severe concussion, the type that comes with a migrane, double vision, ringing ears, dizziness, etc. So in effect you are reduced to one hit point and get the Incapacitated condition until you regain at least one more hit point. That way you can still keep moving, and maybe help in later rounds.

Patty: At least that's better than going to death saves, looks like I'm going to be mostly useless until I get to Hallow. Unless... Hallow your syringes allow you to heal at range don't they?

Hallow: I need to make a roll to hit you or I do damage, but yes I can do that. I even go before you so you should be able to act fully on your next turn.

GM: I'll let you auto-succeed the roll for that, Patty's currently only standing by using her IV pole as a crutch, you've had harder targets in basic training. But that's next turn, it's Christmas up next.

Christmas: And I've got a plan. First, I go to the spot directly opposite Patty. Then I attack with my Scalpel, the fact that Patty is up and not Stunned means that I count a flanking. That means that I get the flat-footed bonus as well as the ability to choose a critical effect to apply even if I miss. *Rolls dice* Yes, Natural 20, that means that I get the full effects of a critical. This means that I get extra precision damage and two effects critical effects instead of one. *Rolls more dice* Hah, max damage, and for my critical effects I choose persistent bleed damage and to half the Skullgirl's speed while she is bleeding. And that means-

GM: CHRISTMAS!

Christmas: What!

GM: You do remember that undead are immune to both bleed and precision damage, right?

Christmas: ...

GM: Also that ability is if the other person is not Incapacitated, not just Stunned, which for the record, also causes you to be Incapacitated. You corrected me on it last session.

Christmas: *Checks rulebook* Crap... you're right. *Sighs* And the ability to apply critical damage through immunities is next level, not this one.

GM: Do you want to re-do your turn?

Christmas: No, No. This one's on me. I should have remembered, especially when the rulebook was open on the correct page in front of me. Just have my character be overwhelmed by everything and make a bad call, I was the one calling HQ so missing the fact that the Skullgirl is undead until after my attack lands is plausible. I guess I eat a Legendary Action Attack now?

GM: *Rolls dice* That's a hit, so you stab the Skullgirl with your scalpel and the Skullgirl rips it out and stabs you back. *Rolls more dice* That's you down, there's supposed to be more damage from a damage reflection thing the Skullgirl has here but since that might kill you instantly I'll ignore it for the good sportsmanship.

Christmas: Thanks. So that was a mess.

Valentine: Don't you mean a miss? *Everyone laughs*

Christmas: I hit the Skullgirl, first damage done so that's debatable. What are you doing Easter?

Easter: Joining all you fools in melee range with the Skullgirl so we can technically say we surrounded them and attempting a grapple, with a bonus from my body bag. Should neuter the Skullgirls turn. Then before running Hallow can heal Patty, allowing her to run. I delay my next turn to after Valentine's. Valentine picks up Christmas and runs. Then I release the body bag and run as well, this way only I have to take an Attack of Opportunity and I have the highest health. Sound good?

GM: Sure, if it works I'll just say that the Skullgirl has more important things to do and decides not to give chase. I'll even allow you to avoid the Attack of Opportunity if you leave the body bag behind when you run, the Skullgirl spends the chance getting out of the body bag instead. Opposed roll for the grapple?

Easter: *Rolls dice* Nice, a high roll. *GM rolls dice, frowns, then proceeds to reroll several before their face flattens and they manually changing the number displayed*

GM: *Ignoring the fact that he just messed with the dice* So you get the Skullgirl into the body bag and are attempting to pin her down. Now it is Valentine's turn, but she is stunned and can't do anything for now. Unless any of she has any objections?

Valentine: Nope. But how hard did you just fudge the dice?

GM: I have no idea what you are talking about. On a completely unrelated note, the dice seem to hate the party tonight. Anyway it's the Skullgirls turn and she proceeds to cast a spell. A giant skeletal hand reaches out to grab Easter and force her off the skullgirl. Strength save Easter, for half damage and to avoid being moved. You have Advantage as the Skullgirl is casting while you are holding her down. *Rolls dice, a smaller size than specified for the spell, they roll high anyway*

Easter: At least that isn't too much damage. *Rolls a 2 and a 3, obvious failures*

GM: *With an overly straight face* Oops. *The Party snickers as the GM proceeds blatantly knocks the dice off the table* I missed that, reroll please?

Easter: *Suppressing giggles* O-okay. *Both dice land on a 1, critical failures that double damage*

GM: *Lets out a sigh that morphs into laughter* You know what, I'm done. Easter the hand pulls you off and breaks some bones, at least one rib. You're down. At this point the Skullgirl speaks "You can come out now." An obvious offer of surrender, do you take it?

Valentine: Yes.

Patty: Obviously.

Easter: Duh.

Hallow: I come out of my hiding place with my hands up.

Christmas: Not like we have much of a choice.

GM: Then the Skullgirl waves a hand and a glowing portal appears. "Go through that and take your friends with you," says the Skullgirl "If I have a use for you, I'll let you out. Behave, and I might let you stay out." Valentine and Hallow pick up Christmas and Easter and move them on through, Patty stumbles in by herself. Inside you see a featureless white void with food, water and the medical supplied needed to keep Christmas and Easter alive. Valentine and Hallow are able to heal up Christmas and Easter while Patty can heal herself, probably by getting help from one of the others and then sitting down and waiting until the world stops spinning. Healing everyone will take up all the supplies and they vanish when used up. We will start next week's session with everyone at full health and sitting around debriefing.

Valentine: Out of curiosity, what was your plan for this session?

GM: You were supposed to detect the Skullgirl and then retreat into the trainyard. Then there would have been a game of cat and mouse as you try to keep track of the Skullgirl without being found out, and she tries to find out what's following her. Direct combat with the Skullgirl was supposed to end in disaster as you have seen but she would not have been all that interested in chasing you. Eventually the Skullgirl would get on a train to New Meridian and you would report in and take the following train. Then the campaign would have transitioned into an investigative one as you try to find out where in New Meridian the Skullgirl has hidden herself and stop whatever she is doing. But instead you decided to fight the end boss early and now I have to figure out where the campaign will go from here. If you have more questions ask, otherwise, good session.

The Party: Same.

AN: Originally each of the last hope and the GM were supposed to have names, but I thought that would be too confusing. I am leaving them here for posterity though. GM: George, Valentine: Valerie, Christmas: Christine, Hallow: Heather, Easter: Eliza, Patty: Patty.

Scythana Starts A Job
May 25th, some time in the afternoon, a park near Maplecrest

Scythana hates coming out to the suburbs, it feels like she's always a half-second from someone getting too jumpy and calling the cops on the big scary half-breed. But her boss said the client wanted to meet her by Maplecrest, so that's where she's gotta go.

Just have the meeting and get out, that's all there is to it, she tells herself.

There's a specific bench in this park she needs to find, and there's the... that face, the client's a Medici? It's not Vitale Medici, but the man looks way too much like the Medicis' number two (probably number one now that Lorenzo's bought it, actually). Something's up here, but Scythana doesn't know enough yet to tell if it's worth the hassle to back out. Nothing to do but talk to the man.

Scythana sits down on the bench next to the client and says her part of the password.

"You heard about Mayor Haggar getting into a fight with some gangsters?"

"I did. It's a shame the Mad Gear feel so bold these days," the client says, giving his portion.

Scythana nods and says, "So, you said you needed a bodyguard for a few weeks?"

"That's right," the man says, adjusting the glasses on his face. "Until the new Skullgirl leaves New Meridian, she gets killed, or my family and I get out of this city, whichever comes first."

"I don't do Skullgirls," Scythana tells him. "You want protection from her, bribe a general or something."

"It's not her I'm looking for protection from," the man says. "With the Skullgirl killing Lorenzo Medici, everyone in New Meridian will be trying to become the next big boss. And that includes killing anyone who ever even looked at the old man. My name is Marcus Medici."

Yeah, that'd do it. But still...

"So what's the Skullgirl got to do with it?" Scythana asks. "She's not gonna try and take over."

"No, she won't," Medici agrees. "But by the time the city gets its act together enough to get rid of her, things will be calm enough that my family won't be in danger."

"So what, if Parasoul comes by tomorrow and kills the Sullgirl, my job's done?" Scythana says. "I don't think so. Fights like this take longer than two days to settle."

"That's true," Medici says. "But I was planning to pay for a minimum of two weeks. After that, we can negotiate any... extensions."

"All right," Scythana says. "Two weeks minimum, and after that it goes until one of those conditions you got happens. That sound right?"

The client nods and says, "That sounds more than acceptable. I take it you know the other details already?"

"Keep an eye on you and whoever lives with you, make sure no one hurts 'em, you'll pay me for that plus any medical bills I get keeping you safe," Scythana rattles off. "And I've gotta stay at your place to give you round-the-clock guarding, so you're paying for my food too. Better hope you've got a lot of spare money, I didn't get this tall by dieting."

She smirks at Medici's face turning the slightest bit pale. Still, he nods eventually, so he's probably good for it. He'd better be, if he wants Scythana to actually do the job. Free food for at least two weeks is gonna do miracles for her wallet, she's not letting this guy stiff her.

"Well then, do we have a deal?" The client asks, holding out a hand.

"Seems like it," Scythana says, shaking his hand. She's careful to not crush his hand, but he still winces at her grip.

Medici stands up and says, "All right, then, we'd best get to my home. I'll need to make sure my wife and daughter know who you are as soon as possible."

Scythana stands up too and stretches before following the client. Idly, she wonders where exactly a man named Medici lives. It can't be Maplecrest, the town's too far from where the action in New Meridian is. He must've just chosen this meeting spot to avoid eavesdroppers.

...Marcus Medici lives in Maplecrest. Goddesses damn it.

A/N: Getting a bodyguard for his family may not have been the only thing Marcus called in favors for. I'll admit that I'm basically using Scythana as an OC, but I very much doubt she's ever going to get added to the game proper (though if saying that means she's getting announced tomorrow, I won't complain), so I've decided to use what little canonical information about her exists and extrapolate from that as best as I can. Her design is simply too cool to go to waste. Though she doesn't actually have a prison outfit or handcuffs on yet since she hasn't been arrested.

May 26th, some time in the morning, Anti-Skullgirl Lab 8

Marie awakens to the sound of music playing in her head. It's... a nice way to wake up, she thinks. Though since it's the first time Marie's woken up in longer than she cares to think about, the fact that she still can sleep and wake up is quite nice on its own. She looks around the room she's woken up in. Aside from the bed Marie's still sitting on, there's a clock in the corner, an electric light in the ceiling, and a desk along the wall. There's no chair for sitting at the desk, and there isn't a closet, but Marie doesn't have any extra clothes, so it's not a big problem. She probably should get new clothes some time, though, the ones she's wearing probably need washing.

Judging by the clock, it's a reasonable hour, so Marie decides to go find Patricia's room again. She isn't sure where Squigly might be, and if the former zombie's still sleeping, she doesn't want to wake her up. Squigly should get to enjoy all the parts of being alive that she's been missing out on for the last... however long she's been a zombie. Come to think of it, Marie doesn't actually know very much about Squigly, and vice versa. They should fix that soon. After spending some time with Patricia, Marie hasn't finished spending too much time with her old friend yet.

As she wanders around the Lab, Marie thinks over what Myriad asked her about. Their existence probably is a secret she can't keep for much longer, and she certainly shouldn't. Myriad's advice is how Marie was able to get to where she is right now, and she... she does like Myriad, in some way she can't quite put into words. Sooner or later, she won't be able to talk around their existence anymore. The problem, of course, is that talking about Myriad would make it seem like Marie's crazy.

Marie's... mostly sure she isn't crazy. At the very least, the abilities Myriad's given her are real. The newspaper article about her fight with Black Dahlia talked about her use of the Shin Shoryuken, she learned that while waiting for the anti-Double armor to be made. And Marie doesn't think that sort of ability is normal for Skullgirls, so something strange is going on with her. But most people wouldn't think "voices from a place Marie doesn't know where it is" are a good explanation, even though it's true. Marie isn't sure she wants her friends to think she's crazy. Or a liar.

Then again, Myriad did mention the idea of using Patricia's prosthetics to talk with other people. Marie doesn't quite understand how they'd do it, but she doesn't understand a lot about Myriad, so it doesn't bother her much. Luckily, she's already heading to see Patricia, she can ask about it when she finds the chance. If Patricia agrees to let mystery voices use her prosthetics like a telephone, and the idea works, that'll solve the problem of looking crazy. Satisfied with her plan, Marie nods to herself and continues on to Patricia's room.

Patricia is, as Marie expected, watching cartoons. The girl doesn't have much else she can do for the time being. It's a shame Patricia doesn't like books, Marie would be happy to read one out loud for her. Maybe she'll get bored enough to say yes eventually.

Patricia turns to look at Marie and says, "Ah, hey, Marie. Ya doin' all right? Y'never came back yesterday. Makes a gal worried, y'know?"

Oh. Oops.

"I'm sorry, Patricia," Marie says, sheepish. "Annie wanted to kill me, so I-"

"Annie wanted to kill you?!?" Patricia shouts. "Annie of the Stars, that Annie? What?!?"

"I was surprised too," Marie says. "But yes, Annie of the Stars is real and has been hunting Skullgirls for a very long time. I spent a while convincing her to let me live, but doing that reminded me that I wasn't safe from the Skull Heart's real master from finding me, and that monster is a shapeshifter, so Annie and I spent a long time finding scientists we could trust to help figure out a way to hide me from the monster's sight. Once that was done, I was really tired and had to sleep. I completely forgot to come see you again, and I'm very sorry."

"It's fine," Patricia tells her. "If I had alla that on my mind, I'd be distracted too. Though, uh, sheesh, that's a lot to take in. Ya gotta warn a gal 'fore ya drop so many big surprises. I'm gonna be spendin' all day gettin' my head around Annie bein' real an' the Skull Heart havin' a boss who can find you whenever."

"She can't find me now," Marie says. "If she still could, I wouldn't be here right now."

"Y'know what I mean," Patricia says. "It's still some crazy shit."

Patricia remains very lucky Marie doesn't have a bar of soap with her. A disapproving look will have to do.

"It is, and ya won't get me sayin' it ain't," Patricia says with an utterly unrepentant grin. "So the Skull Heart has a boss. Think we can kill her? No good havin' anti-Skullgirl weapons if they don't do jack to her boss, eh?"

"I don't know," Marie says after thinking for a long moment. "Annie told me that Double's been around for a long time, and Annie's never won a fight against her except when Double wanted her to as part of some trick. Annie's been doing this for a long time, if she hasn't gotten a real win against Double in all the time she's been around, I'm not sure what it would take to beat Double and make it count."

"But Annie never had me with 'er," Patricia says, voice full of bravado. "Or all the science the boys in the Lab're cookin' up. That Double dame's days're numbered now that Peacock's on the case!"

"Peacock?" Marie asks. "Isn't that the name of the project to make your prosthetics?"

"Yeah," Patricia says. "But I've seen the pics of what all that crap's gonna look like on me, I'm gonna be a peacock! And, well... I kinda like th' idea of havin' a secret identity. I'd be like The Shadow, but cooler. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of Skullgirls? The Peacock knows!"

After a moment, Patricia's expression turns sheepish, and she sputters out, "N- not you, Marie! Yer not evil! I'm sorry!"

Anything more she wants to say turns into a groan of embarrassment as Marie chuckles at her friend feeling shame for once.

"It's fine," Marie says once Patricia's calmed down. "I know what you meant. But speaking of things that seem like they'd only happen in radio shows, there's something I need to ask you about."

"Uh, sure," a confused Patricia says. "What's this about?"

"I have some... friends," Marie starts. "And they can't talk with anyone but me. Their help is why I'm not a monster, they've been helping me resist the Skull Heart's influence. And these friends think that one of the devices you'll be implanted with, they called it the... 'Avery Unit,' I think, could let them talk to people who aren't me. Would you be... open to letting them try once you've got this Avery Unit implanted?"

"Sure, why not?" Patricia says with the best shrug a girl with no arms can accomplish. "Either this is real, and I can talk to ghosts, or you're crazy, but it's the cool kind where you get 'not being evil' powers, and I ain't one to cast stones 'bout bein' crazy."

There are implications in that last part, and Marie doesn't think she wants to touch them right now.

"Thank you," Marie says instead of asking Patricia about things she isn't prepared to get answers for.

Marie and Patricia don't have much more to say, so they spend a while watching cartoons together in a comfortable silence. It feels... there really isn't a better word than "nice." Marie's glad to have the chance to just enjoy something with a friend.

Thank you for helping me have this, Myriad, Marie thinks. I'll do my best to return the favor.

A/N: This will be the only story post for today. You can say more things to Marie or choose to timeskip to some future point that you specify. For example, "the day when Black Dahlia comes after Marie" or "the time after Marie finishes talking with Squigly."
I am fulling willing to reserve my bonus power from "Skullgirls and Symbiotes" to unlock talking to Patricia via the Avery Unit, if Marie or the thread request it.
I'll allow this if you all want. You'll have to wait a bit before Peacock has the Avery Unit, but once she does, you can use it to talk with people. You'll be using the form of Avery, Peacock's little bird assistant.

Adam Has A Rough Day
May 26th, a surprisingly reasonable hour, Anti-Skullgirl Lab 0

Adam doesn't know how Molly can stay awake this long. Panzerfaust is probably more machine than man at this point, and the Princess is just in a whole other league, but Adam knows he and Molly are both reasonably normal humans, and staying awake for almost forty-eight hours now is killing him. Whatever Molly's secret is, Adam wants it. It'd make going through all of Lab 0's records so much easier.

Brain Drain must have hated writing down what he did and why, and that attitude must have carried over to all of his subordinates, because the Lab's records are horrendous. Adam's found a project with five separate names, each used by a different person who worked on it. And that's assuming each of these people only worked on one project at a time. Otherwise, he might be looking at anywhere from two to four different projects with that mess. The record for "most confusing set of records" doesn't go to anything Adam's looked through, though. That "honor" goes to something the Princess found, which the Black Egrets have taken to calling "Project Fukua" after the first name for it the Princess found. Project Fukua has eleven different names that the Egrets have found so far, and half of the reports sound like they're talking about an entirely separate project. The team only knows they're all connected because the schedule of which scientists did which experiments would be completely impossible unless it was all one project. Though why Brain Drain wouldn't classify cloning humans and Parasites as a separate project from placing the spirits of the dead into cloned bodies is beyond Adam. The science involved for each part is completely different from each other, he knows that much.

Naturally, Project Fukua has been the main focus of everyone's record inspection, since that sort of necromancy is extremely illegal without proof of consent that can be shown to predate the death of whoever you're reviving, proof that Lab 0 just doesn't have, but it's not the only concerning thing Lab 0's been up to. Adam's found a "Project Painwheel" that seems to be meant to create anti-Skullgirl fighters by more or less lobotomizing people and attaching automatic weapons to their bodies. That one's still in the middle of looking for subjects, thankfully, and Adam's pretty sure the Princess will shut that one down as soon as she can. Additionally, Molly's come across mentions of a "robot warrior" that Brain Drain was working on but couldn't design a mind for. Apparently he doesn't have a good way to teach a machine how to think, which Adam is thankful for. He's seen R.U.R., he knows what would happen if you could mass-produce artificial people.

Other than the projects that violate scientific and/or medical ethics, so far it looks like Lab 0's crimes mostly amount to the usual sort of things you would expect from a government research lab with little oversight and less accountability. Kidnapping people to use as test subjects, murdering people who threaten to blow the whistle or blackmailing them into silence, lots of bribery and embezzlement (not directly recorded, but the Lab's ledger has some very suspicious entries), and a surprisingly large amount of traffic violations. Apparently some of the Lab's scientists live off-site and don't care about following traffic laws during their commute to and from work. Panzerfaust found some recordings of scientists talking about bribing Canopolis's traffic cops to ignore anything they saw. Thank goodness no one working at this Lab ever thought to turn off the machines they used to record their experiments.

The Egrets have already found enough evidenced to prosecute a solid half of Lab's 0 staff for enough crimes to put each person in prison for life, and that's after a day and a half of checking the Lab's records. Adam knows there's going to be a lot more where that came from, and that's still not counting all the witnesses that need to be interviewed, figuring out who to offer immunity in exchange for testifying, and getting all the victims whatever aid they can. It's going to be a long few months, but if the Black Egrets don't do the work, who will? But for all Adam knows that he and the rest of the team are doing important work right now, he just wants to take a nap. Huh, a quick look around, and it seems like even the Princess is starting to feel tired. This might be Adam's chance.

"Princess?" He calls out to catch her attention.

"What-" The Princess's question is interrupted by a yawn. She must be really tired, she's usually good at keeping any yawns quiet.

"What is it, Adam?" She asks once she can speak properly.

"That's what I was going to ask about," Adam says. "Could we take a break to get some sleep? I'm having trouble keeping my eyes open, and it sounds like you aren't all that awake yourself, Your Highness."

The Princess blinks once, twice, then says, "What time is it now?"

"It's... the 26th, Your Highness," Molly says, barely audible.

Adam can see the gears in the Princess's head turning as she realizes that the Black Egrets have been working on this investigation for more than a whole day straight.

"Uh, yes," she says after a few minutes, "We should go sleep. But first we need to get all of Lab 0's records to a secure location so they can't destroy anything."

The Black Egrets don't know if they want to cheer at being done with reading meeting minutes and expense reports or cry at having more work to do.

A/N: R.U.R. is the play that gave the world the word "robot." It's from the 1920s, so I feel like it (along with Peacock referencing the Shadow in the last main story post) fits the overall vibe of Skullgirls well enough that I don't really want to come up with an equivalent I'd need to explain anyway. And it seems that Lab 0's projects are getting halted for the time being. But the Black Egrets haven't gotten a chance to see these projects in person yet, so who knows how up-to-date the records they've read through are. Parasoul and friends might be in for some surprises when they take a look through the actual Lab.
