Voices From Beyond: A Skullgirls Quest

Smell is one thing, but feel energies or spirits of others could work too. I think there are some characters that have such senses out there.
Any that come to mind?

Cause I think I found something

Rose

Rose (ローズ, Rōzu?, Italian: Rosa) is a video game character from the Street Fighter series, first appearing in Street Fighter Alpha. She is an Italian fortune teller who wields a mysterious form of energy known as Soul Power. Rose was inspired by JoJo's Bizarre Adventure character Lisa Lisa...

Soul Power

The Soul Power (ソウルパワー, Souru Pawā?) is a power possessed by Rose and Menat in the Street Fighter series. It is best known as the antithesis to the corrupted Psycho Power that is, most notably, wielded by M. Bison. The Soul Power is a power that changes mental power into physical power.[1][2] It...

It is stated to be able to seal evil beings (like Double) and sense energy.

Plus with enough practice you essentially become a reality warper.

Briefing: Operation Tomb Robber
May 25th, some time after midnight, Renoir Family Residence

Parasoul knows that being royalty carries many, many obligations with it, but she could do without the obligation to let people wake her up at midnight and tell her that a new Skullgirl's just been seen in the most populated city in the country. At least she got some sleep in, she's got to be at the top of her game for this. But first, preparations.

"Call the Black Egrets in," she snaps to the soldier who'd been sent to wake her up. "The usual meeting spot, they know what that means."

The soldier gives a quick salute and heads off to find a phone. While she waits for the Egrets to show up, Parasoul gets dressed and retrieves Krieg before heading to the usual meeting spot herself.

It takes longer than Parasoul would care to keep track of before the Egrets file into the gym room she usually meets them in. They're the best she's got, and they're this late? They had short notice, yes, but you'd think they would put some hustle in. At least Parasoul was able to get some last-minute information gathering done. She'll berate them later, right now it's briefing time.

Parasoul gets right to the point. "A Skullgirl has been sighted in New Meridian, we're going to find her and kill her."

That puts some energy in the Egrets. They know better than to interrupt a briefing, but Parasoul can feel all the questions they have.

"No pictures, but we have a description. Short, usual Skullgirl coloring, looks young, wears a maid outfit, has her ribs and spine exposed. Different sets of witnesses both put her at Medici Tower earlier this night. She murdered Lorenzo Medici in his office near the top of the tower and then had a fight with the longtime rogue ASG operative Black Dahlia. Black Dahlia survived with damage to her prosthetic arm, which exploded after the Skullgirl, and I quote, 'punched her with lightning.' Similarly, one witness said she produced a glowing shield out of thin air that gave off electric sparks. Make sure you've got your anti-conductive gear on, but otherwise standard anti-Skullgirl tactics."

Adam, mistaking a pause for breath as an invitation to ask questions, says, "How many minions, Your Highness?"

Parasoul makes sure to give him a Disapproving Glare before continuing.

"The number of minions isn't clear. Witnesses to the murder of Lorenzo Medici said that a woman dressed like a nurse kept them from trying to stop the murder, and witnesses to the incident with Black Dahlia said that she had the assistance of three people, one of which was dressed like a nurse but otherwise doesn't match the description of the woman involved in the murder of Lorenzo Medici. None of those four looked obviously undead, either, so it's not clear whether they're recently deceased or living people the Skullgirl has somehow suborned."

Parasoul gets out the overhead projector she keeps in this room for briefings and puts a few photos on it.

"From the witness descriptions, these are the most likely candidates for the Skullgirl's accomplices. The man in the coat is Big Band, an ASG operative who was one of Lab 8's last experiments from before they shifted focus to synthetic Parasites. Moves faster than a man his size should, keeps large musical instruments on his person to use as weapons, and can fly."

"Saw him fight against the opera singer Skullgirl during the Grand War," Panzerfaust adds. "Knows the business, that one."

"Yes," Parasoul says. "He's very experienced, so don't think you can trick him easily."

Molly catches the admittedly unsubtle hint and nods.

"And speaking of the opera singer Skullgirl, this next accomplice of the Skullgirl seems to be the daughter of that previous Skullgirl. Witnesses noticed she had a Parasite, and this one was rather distinctive. This is Sienna Contiello, alias 'Squigly.' She died around the same time that Selene Contiello became the Skullgirl and was seen working with Big Band, along with the actress playing Annie of the Stars back then, to defeat her. Witnesses from that time report Contiello being a zombie who claimed to be free of the Skullgirl's control thanks to the efforts of her Parasite, a very old one named Leviathan who has been known to keep undead from being Skullgirl Minions from time to time. Witnesses from tonight report seeing a girl who looked alive and in good health, but was still bonded with Leviathan. Descriptions of the girl fit pictures of Sienna Contiello from shortly before her death. It seems Contiello has either found a way to disguise her condition as a zombie or found a way to become properly alive again."

Parasoul gives the others a few moments to process that before continuing.

"As for her combat capabilities, reports from the Contiello Skullgirl incident suggest that most of her ability to fight comes from Leviathan, which matches the accounts from tonight's incident. He is a snake-like being somewhere between ten and twenty feet long who can contort himself into essentially any shape and breathe fire. Judging by the reports from fourteen years ago, Leviathan is strong enough to pick up full-grown adults and throw them like you or I could throw a pebble. Additionally, Contiello herself was reported to have a singing voice capable of drawing the attention of anyone within a roughly ten-foot radius, to the point that even Skullgirl Minions would stop what they were doing to listen to her. Bring earplugs and stick to fighting her at range as much as possible."

Panzerfaust looks distinctly unhappy at the idea, but he nods along with the others.

"Third is another operative from ASG Lab 8. Identification on her is tentative since witnesses didn't get a good look at her, but one described a woman who wore a mask and seemed to be 'made of tubes,' and all witnesses mentioned a woman who spat acid at a shell fired from Black Dahlia's gun. Put that together, and you have a good match for Ileum, one of Lab 8's first experiments with synthetic Parasites. Not much recorded on her combat capabilities, apparently she opted to become part of Lab 8's medical staff. What we've got says that she can spit highly corrosive acid on demand and possibly can stretch her arms to significantly more than any natural length. Keep to a distance, but I think this one we might be able to talk down."

"Couldn't we talk down Big Band and Contiello too?" Molly butts in. "If they've fought Skullgirls before, they wouldn't be working with one just because they woke up one day and felt like being evil. Heck, Contiello helped kill her own mother, if she was gonna spare any Skullgirl it would've been that one."

"It's precisely because they've fought Skullgirls before that I doubt negotiations would work," Parasoul says. "Whatever this Skullgirl is doing to get them on her side, it must be powerful. And thus not something we're likely to do anything about. I don't like it either, but I don't think there's a better option."

"Yes, Your Highness," Molly says, rueful. Parasoul decides the briefing should move away from the impossible idea of solving things peacefully.

"Lastly, we have the woman in a nurse outfit seen in Lorenzo Medici's office. Not much to go on with her, but the witnesses for her said she had blue hair and, according to one of them, 'breasts bigger than her head.'"

That witness did not say "breasts," but this is a military briefing. There's no time for vulgarities right now.

"Since the other Skullgirl associates we identified included two agents of ASG Lab 8, I had some people go through the personnel records of the ASG Labs as a whole, just in case. A few minutes before you arrived, I was told there was a match."

Parasoul pointedly does not glare at the Egrets, but they all know they're in for it next training day and why.

"Assuming this woman is indeed an ASG operative, she is most likely Valerie Newhart, codename Valentine. Valentine is a member of a team based out of ASG Lab 0 called the Last Hope, who all dress like nurses and use medical tools as weapons. They're sent out to perform stealth missions, mostly reconnaissance and assassinations, so I suppose the nurse theme is to help them go unnoticed."

"Or someone at Lab 0 has a thing for nurses," Adam chimes in.

Parasoul gives him a distinctly unimpressed look.

"I suppose that's also possible. Now then, Valentine, if it is Valentine who helped the Skullgirl kill Lorenzo Medici, is noted for her skills at stealth, which might be why she wasn't seen during the fight between the Skullgirl and Black Dahlia. In addition, she is fully qualified to practice medicine, so I have no doubt she knows how your bodies work better than you do. She's probably more dangerous when she has the element of surprise, so try to find her first and don't give her a chance to use any medical tools on you. No doubt that once she's started an assault, she'll only finish because you're dead."

The Egrets, save Panzerfaust, all sweat at that a little.

"I don't know if any of the other members of the Last Hope are working for the Skullgirl, but I was able to get some very recent records from Lab 0 indicating that they had a possible sighting of the Skullgirl near Canopolis yester- two days ago now, and they did not report it, only sending the Last Hope to investigate. The Last Hope then disappeared and haven't been found yet, and it seems that Brain Drain, the director of Lab 0, has responded to their disappearance by accelerating a 'Project Painwheel' that no one was willing or able to give me details on. Even if the Last Hope are not traitors, Lab 0 is clearly rotten enough that we'll be paying them a visit soon."

No one argues with that. Even if Parasoul is the only one in the room who's interacted with Brain Drain enough to know just how easily he makes you want to tear him a new asshole, any of the ASG Labs failing to report a possible Skullgirl sighting promptly is somewhere between criminally negligent and outright treason.

Before Parasoul can continue her briefing, a messenger comes in the room and hands her a cable. After a minute of reading, Parasoul looks up from the message and says, "Change of plans. The Last Hope have been recovered and are being debriefed at Lab 0. We're going to make sure the Lab doesn't hide any new information about the Skullgirl from us."

And if Parasoul gets an excuse to start cleaning house while she's there, blowing Brain Drain's head off is going to be the best part of her day.

A/N: It's canoncial that Valentine is a codename and her actual name is "Valerie," but she doesn't seem to have a canonical last name, so I gave her one that seemed appropriate. And I know it's been stated that the Anti-Skullgirl Labs were officially shut down after Nancy was killed, but I dislike that idea and it's a fairly minor plot point anyway, so for the purposes of the quest the Labs are all still government-sponsored, just very secret.

Well this could be a problem as well.. I think Marie would need a escape plan ready for all the characters coming after her now.

Remember we have Shapeshifting! Time to suggest a new appearance to Marie, something she is comfortable with thought.

Also Damm, they have way more intel on us that I would have liked, they aren't aware of the full extent of Marie current abilities but still, they are somewhat in the right direction.

So besides Patricia who else should know of her shape-shifting powers?

Well hopefully Carol will be save, and any bets if Umbrella will be following after Parasoul and the Egrets.

Probably the nurses if last hope know about that, at least in the fact that Marie can manipulate her body to make shapes.
Well they'll definitely be spying on Marie so I wouldn't be surprised if they see it.

…she totally will come to New Meridian.

We need to tell Marie to stay away from her at all cost.
Well at least we can cross off meeting Filia, Ms Fortune, Robo Fortune, and Fukua.

Well at least we can cross off meeting Filia, Ms Fortune, Robo Fortune, and Fukua.

I mean, we can still meet Ms. Fortune and the fish bone gang, unless they tried to rob the medici tower after Marie left and they got Black Dahlia'd.

Fillia and Samson should be crossed thought, I hope we managed to avert their canon fate.

As for Fukua...I think there's still a chance we mauy meet her yet. Aeon might decide to mess with things.

Bit worried what's the Trinity reaction to Marie right now, we need to wait for their answer to recent events.

Not particularly knowledgeable about Skullgirls lore, but between Double/Trinity, Sehkmet and her meatsuit, and tipping it off with Brain Drain managing to be worse morally speaking in some ways than the others, this will end up wild once they all get involved at once.

For the quest, at least, Double and the Skull Heart are the Trinity's main ways of knowing what's going on in the world, and both have limits on what they can learn. That does mean killing Double or permanently destroying the Skull Heart would definitely get the Trinity's attention, but both of those are pretty hard to do, and all three of them are trying to save energy for breaking out of their prison, so they're not going to actively look at the affairs of the world very often. I suppose Aeon could look through different timelines and see if there's any threats to the Trinity coming or something like that, but she's probably too busy perusing Reader/Ms. Fortune fanfiction.

It's always great to get a new reader here. I hope you've been enjoying the quest!

I mean her canon version when she has the life gem.

unless they tried to rob the medici tower after Marie left and they got Black Dahlia'd.
Well it will probably be either easier or harder now that Lorenzo is dead.
but she's probably too busy perusing Reader/Ms. Fortune fanfiction.
Didn't expect she was a fan of those kinds of works.
Fillia and Samson should be crossed thought, I hope we managed to avert their canon fate.
Well Vitale will probably try to get his brother, sister in law and Filia somewhere safe if he thinks the Skullgirl will be coming for them next after she killed Lorenzo.

So, has anyone had any luck finding other sensing characters/powers? Cause even if I'm the one who proposed Soul Power, I'm all in for Werewolf Maid if that's what gets chosen

I did propose that one Mortal Kombat Character that could sense Souls. Aside from that nothing else comes to mind at the moment, need To do some research.

I tend to lurk heavily unless I feel informed enough to actually vote, but this is a nice one.

For powers, honestly, I would say throw in some people from Soul Calibur.

Nightmare/Inferno have some sort of soul sense going on, and their bullshit could be handy in general. The ability to punch ghosts is both niche and useful.

Scenes From Around New Meridian
May 25th, morning, somewhere in Little Innsmouth

Today's not a bad day, Sinker thinks. The gang's just got a good haul in, even if Nadia's going to insist on giving half her share to the poor and making the rest of them look bad, the weather's not bad, and someone finally killed Lorenzo Medici. If it wasn't a new Skullgirl who did it, he'd shake her hand. That was damn near a public service she did. It also gives him an idea...

"Hey, everyone!" Sinker shouts to the other members of the Fishbone Gang. "What do you say to looting Medici Tower now that the big man's dead?"

Around the same time, Maplecrest

This is one of the worst days of Marcus Medici's life. His father finally died, and good riddance to him, but a Skullgirl killed the old man. With how Skullgirls are, it's probably just a matter of time before she decides to kill Marcus and his family too. Marcus could almost accept the Skullgirl deciding to kill him, Trinity knows he did things he's not proud of before he could get out of the gang, but his wife hasn't done anything wrong. Filia hasn't done anything wrong. But the Skullgirl won't care. And Marcus can't do a damn thing about it. Nothing except...

Marcus picks up his house's phone. He has some favors to call in.

Slightly later, Cirque des Cartes

Cerebella's glad to be back from the cop shop, her day can only go up from here. Getting grilled for hours about the Skullgirl killing the big boss is not her idea of a good time. All she wants is to get in bed and sleep for the rest of the day.

"Hey, Bella," Feng greets her. "What happened to you last night? Vitale grabbed you for a job, right? Must've been one hell of a job if you're only back now."

Cerebella can't do anything but sigh.

"That bad, huh?" Feng says, a sympathetic look on her face.

"Try a Skullgirl showing up," Cerebella tells her as she finds a seat. Standing up is more than she wants to do right now.

"Shit, and you lived? I always knew you were badass, but damn," Feng says with a whistle of amazement.

Cerebella grimaces. "I only lived cause she didn't care about me about me at all. Skullgirl just walked into Lorenzo's office, killed him, and walked out. And painted the walls with Lorenzo's blood. It was creepy."

"Yeah, can't say I'm jealous," Feng says. "So you had to get past a bunch of reporters to get back here?"

Cerebella shakes her head. "Cops and some sort of government suits. Don't worry, I was careful about what I told 'em. Just talked about the Skullgirl and her nurse friend with massive honkers."

"Of course that's what you noticed about the nurse," Feng says with a scoff. "But it's weird the Skullgirl had a nurse with her, I wonder what that's about."

Cerebella shrugs. "Couldn't tell ya. With any luck, we won't need to worry about it cause the army or whoever'll find and kill her."

"Yeah, and Annie of the Stars will swoop in with her magic sword to beat the Skullgirl and give us a lesson about friendship and hard work," Feng snarks. "C'mon, Bella, we both know Skullgirls don't go down easy. And you were there when she killed Lorenzo, you've got a target on you now. We need to be ready."

Feng's right, but Cerebella's too tired to think about it right now.

As Cerebella makes her way to bed, she tells Feng, "We can get ready after I've had a nap."

Slightly earlier, a room near Bastet's Den

The singer currently known as Eliza is having a fairly pleasant morning. Lorenzo Medici is finally dead, and good riddance to him. If it wasn't the Skullgirl who did it, she'd shake the killer's hand. Removing Lorenzo from the world is really just a public service. Without him, the Medicis have far less leverage over Eliza now, thanks to the old bastard's love of keeping secrets. Most of the evidence against her won't be in a place anyone can find now. And if Vitale Medici or someone else decides to try something, there is a Skullgirl around. Accidents happen, even to gang bosses. Oh, this is a lovely turn of events.

Around the same time, another spot in Maplecrest

Carol's having a lovely day. The weather is beautiful, the flowers she's growing look healthy, and after school today she'll be going to the beach with her friend Filia. Sure, some strange men in suits almost kidnapped her near Filia's house, but Filia's dog Samson scared them off, so it's fine. Carol can't see any way this day can be ruined!

A/N: Nothing bad ever happens to Carol! As for why the scene with Cerebella and Feng is so long, I just think Feng's neat. Her look reminds me of Jam Kuradoberi, who I used to play in Guilty Gear Plus R. Also, this will be the last story post for today. It seems like people aren't quite sure of how they want to vote yet, so the next update for the main story will be tomorrow.
I mean that's what happened in the web comic, although even Parasoul didn't know of the labs being active still until she got Ben to lead her to lab 8.
That's fair, there's a good chance I misunderstood what the webcomic was trying to say. I'll take the L on this.

Oh if only Samson could've stopped them, and wasn't it the Medici's who kidnapped her first and than Brain Drain took her?
Marcus picks up his house's phone. He has some favors to call in.
He better not be calling his brother, cause I really don't want to see him killed in the cross fire.
It seems like people aren't quite sure of how they want to vote yet, so the next update for the main story will be tomorrow.
Do you mean with the power to help Marie or the vote on what to say to her.

What are you talking about Shadow? Small Nerd is right pretty sure. Webcomic confirms that the Labs that remained went rouge. Parasol's father and Dr. Avian literally said that. They cut off contact with the government to continue their research and work.

In the Webcomic, Parasoul suspected the labs were active when she had a run in with Peacock, and while she wanted to investigated it, her ftaher told her to focus on that later...which she disregarded, same with his previous command, and found Big Band and forced him to show her where the lab was located and tried to shut it down.

Uh, so Carol is stille fine! Yay!!! One less thing to worry about!

Well not really, pretty sure Brain Drain iss till gonna work on making a Painwheel, just that it wont be Carol!!!

Oh if only Samson could've stopped them, and wasn't it the Medici's who kidnapped her first and than Brain Drain took her?

Might have been retconned in the mobile game (Which i have never actually played) but it's suppoed to have been Valentine the one that Kidnapped Carol and brought her to Brain Drain. That's why I thought Carol was already becoming/became Painwheel. Cause that should have happened befire Last Hope got killed in the game. Apparently here is different? Which good, Carol needs a happy ending.

Do you mean with the power to help Marie or the vote on what to say to her.

I think QM means on the vote? I dont think no one else has voted on it?

Whoops looks like people forgot to vote, although we were busy trying to think of something to help Marie.

Hmm, must have misremembered a few things.

Let's hope this is canon, although I definitely don't want anyone to become Painwheel..

Which brings up a question on what happened.

I'm definitely playing with the timeline of canon events a bit, since a lot of it's more vague than I'd like. In this case, my assumption is that Carol was kidnapped (by Valentine) about two or three months before the game starts, and the quest is still about four months before what I've decided is when the game starts, so she isn't already Painwheel. In the quest, thanks to Marie putting the Last Hope in the Time Out Box, Brain Drain couldn't send Valentine to kidnap Carol, and the people he did send to look for test subjects weren't as good at kidnapping as she is. That said, they're not done looking yet...
