-[X] (Voice 4) "And the witch is gone ladies and gentlemen! Our current undefeated champion continues to be... Marie the Combat Maid! How do you like the name? Pretty cool eh? We can workshop it later if you want."
-[X] (Voice 1)"Awww, you made a new friend Marie! That's great!!! Well done back there."
-[X] (Voice 2) "Hopefully we'll have a few moments of peace before Double or someone else comes for us Madam."
-[X] (Voice 1) "Oh yeah Marie, don't forget to tell Mister Ben about the nurses, see what you should do with them."
May 25th, an unreasonably early hour, Anti-Skullgirl Lab 8

It takes a lot of time and questions before Marie gets to see Patricia again. The people of the Anti-Skullgirl Lab are more than a little wary of a Skullgirl who says she doesn't want to kill anyone, which Marie can't really blame them for. It's going to take a lot for most people to believe they're safe around Marie. Eventually, though, after a lot of explaining what she's been up to, including the nurses in the Time Out Box (somehow she was able to avoid mentioning that Myriad gave her the ability to do that), the Lab's scientists are done asking Marie questions, at least until they can get some sleep. The head of Lab 8, Doctor Avian, does ask Marie to put the nurses back near Canopolis where she first met them, since that's apparently where they live, but once that's done, Marie can finally visit her friend.

What happened to her? Marie can't help but ask herself. Patricia's eyes and teeth have been replaced. Her arms and legs are missing too, but they haven't been replaced only because the prosthetics for them aren't ready yet, as Ileum, the woman made of intestines, explained to her on the trip to Lab 8. Even with the advance notice, though, Marie wasn't really prepared to see just how bad of a shape Patricia's in.

Opening the door must have woken her up, because Patricia looks at Marie as soon as she's in the room, despite the strange hour. Patricia looks at Marie for a long moment, not saying a word. Neither of them can. It's been too long since they last saw each other, there are too many things both of them need to say.

Finally, Patricia asks, "Marie? Is it really you?" Are you still my friend? Will I need to kill you eventually?

There's only way Marie can answer.

"It's me."

"Oh, good," Patricia says, her eyes brimming with tears not yet shed. "I can't get up, so get over here and hug me."

Marie's never been so happy to do something Patricia asked of her.

Eventually, the two of them finish sobbing and apologizing to each other, just in time for Squigly to come into the room, a slightly sheepish look on her face.

"I'm sorry, Marie," she says. "The doctors have some new questions they need to ask you. They asked me to get you."

"Who's this?" Patricia asks. "Friend a yers, Marie?"

"I'm Squigly," the girl in question says. "I used to be a zombie."

Patricia raises an eyebrow at that, looking at Squigly's clearly alive body.

"I got better," Squigly says. "Marie found a magic gem that made me alive again."

Patricia nods and says, "That's Marie for ya, always tryin' t'help whether ya want it or not. She ain't usually doin' the sorta stuff ya hear about in Annie stories, tho."

"You'd be surprised how many of those stories have some truth in them," Leviathan says after turning to face Patricia. "Leviathan. I'm an old friend of Squigly's family and made sure the Skull Heart didn't control her when she was a zombie."

"That's neat," Patricia tells him. "Do ya think ya could do that on Marie too? Once the Doc's through with me, I'm s'posed ta have special anti-Skullgirl beams, and I wanna be sure Marie holds still when I blast the Skull Heart outta her."

"I'll see what I can do," Leviathan says. "I do owe Marie for helping me and Squigly. She wasn't the only zombie Marie turned back to life with that magic gem."

"You were a zombie?!?" Patricia shouts. "That's so cool! Damn, I wish I coulda seen it."

Patricia is very lucky Marie doesn't have a bar of soap on her right now.

"...Thank you," Leviathan says after a pause. "But we really ought to get going. The scientists here need to know everything they can if we're going to get Marie out from under the Skull Heart's thumb."

Patricia opens her mouth, only for Leviathan to say "Metaphorical thumb," which prompts Patricia to close her mouth.

Leviathan's right, Marie really shouldn't keep Lab 8's scientists waiting much longer. They're doing her a big favor by not killing her on sight, and she does owe them for that. If their price is the answers to some questions, it's a price Marie's happy to pay. She might even get a chance to warn them about Double. If Lab 8 has special anti-Skullgirl weapons, they might work as anti-Double weapons too, and Marie really wants the monster gone. It's time to go.

"I'll be back," she tells Patricia as she heads out the door.

A good-natured "Ya better be!" follows Marie as she goes with Squigly to the scientists waiting for her. It feels good to see Patricia for herself and know that she really is recovering. Soon, she'll be up and walking around, and then she and Marie can have some fun. Beowulf's having a comeback tour soon, and neither Marie nor Patricia would miss that for the world.

A/N: In-game, it seems that Peacock doesn't actually have eyes in her skull anymore and uses the artificial eyes attached to her arms to see. For the purposes of the quest, Peacock currently has a pair of artificial eyes in her eye sockets to get her used to seeing with them, and they'll be taken out and attached to her prosthetic arms once she has those grafted on. Also, this will be the last story post for today. Will Double show up to take the Skull Heart from Marie's dead body? Will Annie somehow hear about all this and beat Lab 8's door down to kill Marie? Will Marie get to see Beowulf in the ring? Find out next time, on Voices From Beyond!

Updated Marie's list of abilities and added pictures of her.
Updated Squigly, Big band, Valentine, Black Dahlia status. Added squigly picture of what should be her current "alive" look

-[X] (Voice 3) "Sorry for not talking in a while. Was busy with getting you a method to shut the Skull Heart up. Glad the power came in just in time for the fight as well."
-[X] (Voice 3, if asked how) "A Devil's Deal in the shards of a shattered mirror. Desperation replaced Wisdom, I took the unused second for my own. Then shaped and refined, an echo of mastery of the one who won the battle for their mind. Finally gifted to you, so to yourself hold true."

Awww I'm glad for Marie being able to finally meet Patricia again after going throught so much. Thought we aren't out of the woods yet.

A thought just crossed my mind…Marie IS aware that Double Can shapeshifter right? I don't think she has commented about that nor hat any thought about it. She knows she is a monster but maybe she doesn't k le that aspect of Double? We assumed before she knew more about the city and that almost blew up in our faces.

Also we might have forgotten to tell Marie that Double Can track her… She certainly knows where the labs are now if she didn't know before.

Damm I'm getting paranoid and thinking that Squigly and Leviathan aren't actually who they think they are!

We need to kill Double fast!

Before they parted ways, Double said that Marie would know where to find her. The creature liked taking the form of a nun, so she would probably be somewhere religious.
Yes, Marie's aware of Double's shapeshifting.

Speaking of dealing with a shapeshifter. Are there any powers that would let Marie detect Double when she is hiding/shapeshifted?

Perhaps Kenshi Takahashi ability to sense/see sounds?

Kenshi Takahashi

Kenshi Takahashi (Japanese: 高橋剣士 Takahashi Kenshi) is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. A blind swordsman with the abilities of telekinesis & psychokinesis, he is the father of Takeda Takahashi and one of the core members of the Special Forces and the OIA. Kenshi made his...

Despite his blindness, Kenshi possesses senses that are heightened beyond their normal ability and can fight on par with any other kombatant. Kenshi wields an ancestral sword called Sentothat contains the spirits of warrior kings from his line, and he is in turn guided by these spirits in combat. He can sense an opponent's presence by their energy or by hearing them and thus, can take opponents by surprise. His senses are so acute, he is capable of sensing beings capable of hiding from well-trained assassins such as Sub-Zero and can even sense beings sealed in objects such as Shinnok who was trapped in his own amulet that leads to a dark dimension. His sense of sight is revealed to be spiritual in nature, meaning that he can sense the souls of living beings. Also due to his blindness, he is completely immune to attacks that would target one's sense of sight.

This could allow her to pick Double from a group of people when hiding, as long as she has a soul that can be sensed?

Aside from that maybe by smell? If Double has a distinct smell perhaps by Increasing her smell Marie could find her? Not sure what fighter specifically has that thoguht

Reptile should have some enhanced Senses, being a velociraptor and all, there's also the werewolf from Darkstalkers, I'm sure he has some good senses as well.

I'd definitely allow Talbain or Sabrewulf in addition to Reptile since "the nose of a wolf" is common enough for werewolves that I'm willing to assume without further evidence it applies to them too. Also it would make Marie an undead werewolf maid, which is a phrase that I'm not sure has ever been spoken before, so I think we can make history here.

Ohh if we give Marie that, She can totally go to Beowulf's comeback match in full werewolf mode and claim she is one of his biggest fans. That would be so hype!

She will be able to give the biggest HOOOOWWWWLLLLSSSS of the whole public!

Definitely picking the Darkstalkers werewolf over the killer instinct one, cause at least he knows marital arts and can use nunchakus.

Depends if the QM allows all of that or just the abilityto turn into a werewolf. The extra stuff is good but main thing is the nose and ability to identify Double, that's the thing we should focus on.

[X] Plan: Iddle chatter.
-[X] (Voice 1) "We are glad everything is going well for you Marie. There's still a long way to go, but we are getting there, little by little."
-[X] (Voice 1) "By the way, totally unrelated question. How do you feel about becoming a werewolf maid? If you get the feeling of howling to the skies when it's full moon it's totally normal, trust us."
-[X] (Voice 4) "Yeah kid, just imagine, the arena goes dark, the moonlight shining through the roof as everyone wonders what's happening, then, boom! You jump down from the rafters! Landing on all fours then literally howl a challenge to the champ! It would be glorious!"
-[X] (Voice 2) "Care for some music to pass the time madam?"

So tentative plan for now.

Also, how likely is that Brain Drain is gonna come and mess things up? I'm expecting Painwheel to crash the Lab 8 any minute now.

Fair, just want her to make sure she doesn't succumb to being a beast like Saberwulf.

Do you even need to ask, and how much you want to bet that Parasoul would be looking for Marie once word gets out that Lorenzo was killed by accidentally skullgirl.

I mean, Parasoul and Annie are a given once word gets out. More like, If Brain Drain hears Lab 8 has the skullgirl, would she attack the place to capture/kill Marie? But eventually Brain Drain will start getting involved more deeply on this yeah

News Travels Fast
May 25th, mid-morning, Meridian Studios

Just gotta make it through today. That's what Annie's been telling herself every day for the last few years. It doesn't help, but she pretends it does. Keeps her together enough Florence hasn't dragged her to another shrink yet, at least. Annie's manager means well, sure, but Annie doesn't make enough money to pay someone what they'd deserve for going through a few centuries' worth of crazy. And besides, everyone knows that unresolved mental issues have to get fixed all at once in a high-stakes fight during the climax for a last-second power boost. Annie's sure as heck not passing up on that, she needs all the advantages she can get in her job.

Though when it comes to her job, it's a real shame work in the Skullgirl-hunting field's dried up so much in recent decades. Used to be Annie could live for years off what people would give her just for driving off a Skullgirl, and that was with her refusing as much as she could without offending the grateful townsfolk. Nowadays, governments all have industrial manufacturing and high explosives, so nobody needs a Skullgirl hunter anymore. Annie's had to get a second job just to make ends meet, and it's friggin' acting. When Annie was a kid, "actress" was just a polite way of saying "prostitute," but now it's something parents actually want their kids to be. People these days are crazier than she is.

That's enough being old and crotchety for one morning, Annie's gotta put her showtime face on. Right after she checks the newspapers and has what Florence thinks is too much coffee, the worrywart. Annie's tough, her liver can take it. Now then, are there any signs of a new Skullgirl today? The seventh anniversary of Nancy getting killed is coming up, so there should be a new one soon-

Annie does the sixty-fourth genuine spit-take of her life at the headline on the Meridian Gazette: NEW SKULLGIRL APPEARS, ASSASSINATES LORENZO MEDICI. Well, there's the sign she wanted.

The article does the usual fawning over the Medicis you'd expect, but other than that, it's not too bad. Apparently, Lorenzo Medici was killed last night in his office in Medici Tower, and the killer left a message in his blood, signed with a picture of a skull. That sounds like something some of the nuttier Skullgirls would do, sure. Hm, what else do they have. "Shortly after the estimated time of the murder, witnesses saw a fight in front of Medici Tower between a woman with a gun for an arm and a young girl with blue flames coming from her back." First this Skullgirl kills Lorenzo Medici, then she fights off Black Dahlia? If she wasn't a puppet of the Skull Heart and its shapeshifting master, Annie would shake this girl's hand. That's darn near a public service, what she did.

Anything else? Ah, here. "During the brawl, our sources say, the suspected Skullgirl was assisted by people that witnesses described as a woman wearing a mask and medical gown, a tall man with large metal arms, and a young girl of similar age to the Skullgirl with a worm-like Parasite." The woman could be anyone, but the other two... Big Band and Squigly? Well, maybe not Big Band, but there's not that many Parasites in the world, and Annie's met a lot of them. There's a good chance Squigly and Leviathan were there, and they helped the Skullgirl. At least, as far as the Gazette's sources know. Leviathan can keep Squigly from being controlled by the Skull Heart, Annie knows that, so if they played nice with this new Skullgirl, it wasn't because they were mind-controlled. Is she that persuasive? Or are they trying to get her trust so they can kill her more easily later? Well, there's only one way Annie can find out.

Annie finds Florence and tosses a new copy of the Gazette her way.

"Get my schedule cleared," Annie tells her. "Something's come up."

A/N: Another sidestory, just to give you all an idea of what's going on in the wider world right now. Black Dahlia did shout pretty loudly about how she just fought a Skullgirl right before the cops showed up to Medici Tower, so Marie's cover wasn't going to last much longer. Also, Annie's coffee is decaf, but no one tells her that.

You wouldn't get everything special a character has all at once. You'd be picking one thing at a time.

So Saber, got anything you want to say as well?

Well damm, it's really Sad Seeing Annie's current state of mind, it really shows how lIving for centuries can affect one person. Hope Annie meeting marie wont led to a fight and both of them can become friends.

Girl knows her tropes, Mad respect!!!

Welp, seems like Parasoul won't be far away from Annie in hunting Marie...this will be interesting.

And if Double didn't knwo what Marie did now she knows.

(Voice 4) Yeah kid, just imagine, the arena goes dark, the moonlight shining through the roof as everyone wonders what's happening, then, boom! You jump down from the rafters! Landing on all fours then literally howl a challenge to the champ! It would be glorious!
