Unexpected Glory (A CK2-style Quest)

[X] Serolmic Region
[X] Yes.
[X] Study the native language. You're decently proficient at it already, but a little extra practice couldn't hurt. (???)
I feel that this is the best option because we won't have to deal with the nobility as much as the other two choices.

Oof. This one changed quickly. I'm back now, but seeing as how things have heated up I'm going to hold the vote open a few more hours to make sure I'm not just closing it in favor of one or the other.

In the meantime, I'll weigh in with some more information on both of the frontrunners that may help you all come to a consensus. Give me a minute to type this up.

Thanks a lot, so hows the worldbuilding coming along? I know you say orcs live in this land but are we talking buff goliaths 8ft tall swole.

More humanoid in form and simply a bit more green then your average human.?

Or more elder scrollsy.

Also how high fantasy is this? Or is it more low fantasy ? Are there other known races. I dont really know the source material

Edit: So on second thought, maybe instead of more information, what you need is a little perspective. Sorry, for not including more information in this post. I can answer questions though, seeing as I'm going to be free for a little while now.

Original Post:

In a way, I suppose I ought to count this as a success, because I wanted all of the options to be appealing. 2/3 I guess, so yay?

Port Helm is indeed a strong position to leverage your diplomatic/intrigue strengths. And the Serolmic Region carries a lot of strategic weight. You can easily succeed in either location, but the question you need to be asking yourselves is: Succeed at What?

Do you want to join the great political game and make a play for King? Do you want to secure your lands and position and ride out the chaos? Do you think the orcs are being underestimated and want to unite everyone to prepare for the fight of your lives? Do you want to plot and scheme against Emperor Magnus, and lead the Eastern Province as an independent Empire?

Port Helm and the Serolmic Region will each give you different advantages towards different scenarios. Select the one you think will help you along towards your ultimate goal.

I also want to note that if you think voting for Port Helm means you'll be safe and never see a battle, you may be in the wrong quest. And if you think Serolm is the only option with strategic value you aren't thinking big enough.

The Vote
So what now? you ask. Well, I'm going to leave the vote open for at least a minimum of 24 hours from when it was posted (2 hours from now.) If by then the vote hasn't settled clearly in one direction or another, I'll wait for another 4-5 hours. If then it still hasn't settled, I'll announce a final deadline and that will be that.

In the meantime, I'll be working on a dozen other things that I'll need to have ready for the next two posts regardless of how the vote goes (quest mechanics, lore, etc.). So the time won't be wasted, and ideally, everyone will get their chance to vote.

Well that's some loaded questions there. I feel like maybe we could've had a motivation vote in character creation to clarify that.

Personally I'll go against the normal grain and say I just want to lead our lands well but not look to undermine our Emperor or look to form a new country.

I think a big thing is that we currently dont know the political climate (we should cus of BG vote) but I can understand the qm being hesitant to info dump us.

Personally I dont think we should aim for king of eastern lands. Atleast not yet. Our position is nowhere near secure. We dont really have the martial to secure the land against enemy armies (orcs) and were freshly made nobles from humble beginnings.

I dont know political climate but I can make a guess that the nobles arent pleased at the death toll the empire has incurred in this war even with the capturing of NEW LAND. The emperor has no heirs atm so his position is very volatile.

I think instead we should play kingmaker. Find someone we like of good standing and bloodline with really good martial and back him or her up.

We can be the richest mofos in the new land and that will get us status and prestige and when our family comes over they can use their skills to fashion new uniforms/ tabards/ standards and all sorts of cool things to make our people and new house stand out.

It's why I'm really pushing for trade prince right now. Even if there is combat or pirates or violence as the qm states , I think we can handle it.

Also I'm super excited for the hero unit/ advisor votes.

I'm pretty sure were gonna get our squire buddy childhood friend /
secret husbando route
 Husbando. You may be disappointed if I follow through with an idea I had. We'll see.

But I also wonder who our other hero units will be. I'm thinking we might get access to a ship master in both regions besides Fort, wherass fort might give us a better martial hero. Out of necessity more then anything .

So I actually did a ton of work on the potential advisors before I had to log off for a while, and while some of that was based on the assumption that you'd all be headed to Serolm, I think most of it will still be usable regardless of where you end up. You may find different options more appealing in certain locations, but that was always going to happen. Let me just say, I'm pretty happy with how it's shaping up.

So how is this being tallied? if its by each line then Serolmic Region is winning but if its by plan then My unexpected life as a new trade Prince is winning.

The others were correct, I'm counting every vote, plan and individual. @Mr.rodent was also correct in that we will be switching over to Plan voting. In this very next update actually, because otherwise it'll just be too much to keep track of. :lol

Well that's a good thing, because the source material is my brain. But I don't have a lot of answers for you just yet. Except that the world building has been keeping pace. Unfortunately, I like to have the whole thing assembled before I reveal any pieces of it, because that's the only way to be sure it all fits together.

Obviously, I've overcome that tendency somewhat in order to write a quest, but it still holds true in some instances. revealing world building I'm unsure of is one of them.

I can say for the orcs that you're heading in the wrong direction. Think Lord of the Rings Orcs. Savage. And I'm aiming for high fantasy, or at least what I associate with the term. What does it mean to you?

Well that's some loaded questions there. I feel like maybe we could've had a motivation vote in character creation to clarify that.

Votes like that are tricky things. Once they've been held, they become a permanent part of the character, and can be a real hassle if players want to change their mind because of new info/worlbuilding/etc.

I prefer to think of the lot of you as Rickard's personal motivations. Sure, you pull in different directions sometimes, but doesn't that happen to everyone?

Personally I'll go against the normal grain and say I just want to lead our lands well but not look to undermine our Emperor or look to form a new country.

And that's a perfectly viable option. This quest isn't on any railroad tracks, I promise.

Noooooooo , no Joan of arc female knight expy. My secret husbando routeeeeeeeeee.

Ooof those some ugly orcs....uhhh I guess no orc waifu?

And high fantasy to me generally means full on gods, magic, a bunch of different races, dragons, mythical creatures , potions and all sorts of shit. Elder scrolls, dnd, RPGs of all sorts.

Wherass low fantasy is more GoT. Theres magic and shit but it's a lot more low key. Things are more realistic or midevil . It's more grounded in reality then high fantasy

Yeah...probably not.

Hm. I think I was underestimating just how prevalent magic is in High Fantasy. That being said, I'm definitely aiming further along that end of the spectrum than GoT. I half included the orcs just to make a point about the kind of fantasy this would be: multiple races, magic is real, etc. The exact amount of that stuff though? Let me know what you think in an update or two.

Sigh, so much for a ballad about how love transcends all. Guess Rickard has to strictly be attracted to humans, I guess, instead of beautiful souls in general...

Now now. Just becuase the orcs are ugly doesnt mean theres not some other beautiful fantasy race creature out there.

What's that, one of the options is right next to the sea?

"
Up where they walk
Up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wanderin' free
Wish I could be
Part of that world"

I am happy to report a sudden and inexplicable leap forward on the worldbuilding side of things.

[X] Plan: My unexpected life as a new trade Prince

Because the Port is a better starting position that allows for us to turn into the Manderlys or even Venice or more.

Oh hey the front page updated. Sweet. Omg those stats jeeez lol

Ah yes, that actually reminds me. I needed to add something I had forgotten.

Gainted Trait: Not So Common After All: As a commoner who has been raised to join the peerage some nobles will insist on looking down on you. Commoners will have an easier time in your presence than that of other nobles. (-2 Diplomacy v. Nobles, +2 Diplomacy v. Commoners.)

Martial: 8-4+2 = 6 (You have never been inclined towards violence, and have dedicated most of your time elsewhere. Still, your raw courage in combat does inspire a little respect.)

Ooof. Were gonna need a training montage eventually.

Diplomacy: 15+2+2+2+2 = 23 (Both your natural talents and your vast experience with people have honed your instincts. You can almost always reach an understanding if they give you an inch.)

YOU WILL BE OUR FRIEND.

Intrigue: 12+2+2+2 = 18 (You've seen that the world is not always your friend, and your natural cunning is useful for navigating the dark alleys of the world.)
We can throw all the shade. And spilleth all the tea.

Stewardship: 12+2+2 = 16 (To own something is to be responsible for it. To lead someone is to serve them.)
not bad not bad. Trade king here we come.

Learning: 10+2 = 12 (The world is full of mysteries…most of which are probably explained in a library somewhere.)
We arent an idiot. But we aren't a scholar either.

Sorcery: 9 (There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy. But you certainly haven't seen any proof of that. Yet.)
prob gonna need a court wizard fast...

Traits:
Voice of Angels: You have a natural talent for music, singing especially, that can bring even the hardest of hearts to tears. (+2 Diplomacy, +2 Intrigue)

Make Love not War: You have never been suited, by either inclination or ability, for the harshness of war. (+2 Diplomacy, -4 Martial)

The Chivalrous Bard: Your moment of heroism saved the life of the most powerful man in the world, preventing a succession crisis that could have devolved into civil war. Many in the Empire consider you to be a true hero. (+2 Martial)

Not So Common After All: As a commoner who has been raised to join the peerage some nobles will insist on looking down on you. Commoners will have an easier time in your presence than that of other nobles. (-2 Diplomacy v. Nobles, +2 Diplomacy v. Commoners.)

Fashionable: You were raised by tailors, and good ones. You know at a glance what someone's dress is meant to convey, and are not without skill with needle and thread yourself. (+2 Intrigue, +2 Stewardship)

Political Gossip: Interacting with both rich and poor, noble and common, you had the opportunity to observe the games of the powerful in the heart of it all. You learned much. (+2 Intrigue, +2 Diplomacy)

Child of the Capital: Raised in the capital of the Empire, the Golden City, you received an education simply by osmosis that was far above your station. You have also observed the challenges inherent in the administration of a massive city. (+2 Learning, + 2 Stewardship)

Disciple of the Nightingale: Leliana Nightingale's tutelage was as peculiar as she was, quicksilver and beautiful. Under her watchful eyes you learned to walk the halls of power with finesse and grace. (+2 Diplomacy)

Inventory:
An Imperial Gift: Handcrafted by the world renowned master craftsman Salander, this Guitar is as beautiful in tone as it is appearance. With it, your music becomes sublime. (+2 Diplomacy when used.)

Some very impressive traits. Overall I am happy, the negative malus with the nobles is practically non existant with our stats

Personally I am fine with having a shit Martial stat. It's nice to have a character with clear weaknesses. Better we just source a good Marshall when the time comes and focus on looking good when reviewing the troops.

....

25+2=
27

we literally have a +27 modifier with commoners.

Holy. Fuck. Guys. ....we might have broke the quest already.

Edit Again: Anyone for Serolm?
